Reason for trip
After a series of short haul travel in the middle part of the year, its now time for another long haul. This time my main destination is to Frankfurt to attend the 2007 International Motor Show (IAA). This time round, I decided to fly in through Munich by TG as I have not tried out their A340-600 yet, so I guess why not go in a day earlier for the sake of getting on the A340-600, plus Munich is a much nicer airport than Frankfurt to fly into.
Pre Flight
I have already decided to stop writing my CGK-KUL-CGK legs, but this time I had to as I had another weird configured aircraft on this route. Its as another normal Sunday for me, waking up late and spending time with the wife and family. After lunch, I just wasted my time watching tv and doing some final packing. I left a little late and I got into the airport just 40 mins before departure, it was really busy today, security lines were pretty long, or being Jakarta, very messy! Luckily check in was swift and I spent the rest of my time in the smoking area of the common use lounge which SQ, TG and MH to name a few uses.
MKR ready to take me to KUL, my usual intermediate destination
In Flight
Today’s aircraft is an A330-300. 9M-MKR has the refit seats form the A330-200. Looks pretty worn though, but at least its something different than the usual boring A333 interiors.
As usual, they had a cheerful and extremely helpful crew on board. Pretty high loads today in both J and Y, I guess that’s why they changed the aircraft from a B734 to the A333. There was delay before departure as on the centre seats, the overhead panel for the oxygen masks dropped! (the panel, not the masks) So we had a delay waiting for the engineer to come on board to tape it up! Sounds similar to my B733 experience with Garuda going to Bali back in May. The flight itself passed quickly and I killed time reading the inflight magazines and having my usual meal of Szechuan Chicken!
Menu, with special insert for the Tengku’s (Royal family) recipe, as the meal features was in line with Malaysia’s 50th Birthday
Good old Szechuan chicken for me
Service: 9/10
Food: 7/10 (But I am getting a bit sick of the Szechuan Chicken though)

Didn’t get much sleep the night before, or actually none at all as my friends kidnapped me for the night and we had supper and chatted till like 2 in the morning! Woke up at 5.40am and showered before walking to the KL Sentral station, managed to catch the 0615am train to the airport. Check in was very slow as the agent had trouble looking for a 1st class boarding pass for my BKK-MUC leg of the journey, but I am not surprised as this always happens After that, it was quickly through immigration and the first security check, bought some magazines and then rest of the time was spent in the badly in need of renovation Royal Silk Lounge!
I was too tired and lazy to walk around the terminal as it was very crowded plus I have a severe lack of sleep! Soon enough boarding was called and I headed to the gate which was not too far form the lounge today. ‘Unusually’ happy regional J flight attendants welcomed me aboard the flight.
Busy KLIA with flights departing almost everywhere
TJG, ready to take me to BKK
In Flight
I like TG’s B772’s with the new refit interiors in J, nice and comfortable and although its barely and 2 hour hop to Bangkok, its always nice to have AVOD. Breakfast was served, but the taste was only average, or maybe I was just too tired? It was a really bumpy flight was turbulence occurred about every 20 mins after take off, there was virtually only a 30 min window where the seat belts were turned off!
Hitting bad turbulence somewhere over northern Malaysia
But all in all this was a pleasant regional J flight with TG as usually as many of you already know, their regional crews are pretty grumpy and not as pleasant as their long haul crews.
Menu for the flight
On Board TJG, new look interior in J, but aircraft still in old colour scheme
Passing over downtown Bangkok and Chao Phraya river
Although I was pretty restless during the inbound flight from KUL, somehow I didn’t get any sleep, after arrival I was picked up at the gate by buggy to take me to the Royal First Lounge where after checking in, I decided to go over and try out the new ‘Royal Orchid Spa’ where massage treatments are complimentary for Royal First and Royal Silk passengers. It was not too crowded at the spa and since I had so much time, I decided to pamper myself with a 1 hour fill body massage. The spa was really nice, and its up there in comparison to some of the top hotel spas in the world. The treatment room itself was really nice and spacious with showers, Jacuzzi and all! After a great massage, I took a shower and headed back to the Royal First Lounge, now feeling extremely relaxed of course!
The only airline spa in the world!
Passing my remaining time in the world’s no. 1 lounge was effortless and spent most of my time on WiFi catching up with emails from work.
Smoking room in the Royal 1st Lounge
Main sitting area
About 15 mins before departure, a customer service officer personally called me and escorted me to the gate, I am really psyched as this is going to be my first time on TG’s A346, or any A346 for that reason! When the customer service officer told me there is only 1 other F passenger besides myself, I was even more excited for this flight!
TNA, my first ride on an A346
In Flight
Once entering the A346, I was greeted by very polite and cheerful f/a’s, but I guess that’s the minimum that you would expect in F, especially on an Asian airline. And true enough, after I entered the aircraft, the door was shut behind me and there was really only 1 other passenger besides myself in F.
Same F seats as on the B744
Always have champagne when flying F, its almost a most !
Amenity Kit
J was about 75% full and Y was 85%. There were 3 people serving us up front, so meaning a customer to f/a ration of 1.5 to 1, hows that for service odds!
All these food for just the 2 of us
Tarmac at Bangkok just before push back and scenes while on taxi
The A346 feels very much like the A345, only when I walked through the cabin mid-flight was when I realized how much longer this aircraft actually is. HS-TNA is the 1st of TG’s A346 to be delivered. Although the space between F seats on the A346 is tighter than the B744’s. When the engine started up and after taxi and take off, I realized one thing, the A346 is one really quiet and comfortable aircraft to be in! Even during the start up, I must say its at least 25% quieter than the B777 engines! Being heavily loaded, it was a really long take off roll. Oh yeah, and the wine list is back into the menu now
Just after take off, love those engines don’t you!
Seatbelt signs off, now its time to take a look at the toilet with a view
What shall I have?
I didn’t sleep much during the flight as it’s a day flight and I managed only to get 5 hours of sleep.
Nice design over the center, and its much better without overhead bins too
My favourite time of the flight, meal time!
It was pretty much turbulence free after passing India, but at some points, head winds were up to 200kph.
After the meal, time to seat back and relax with AVOD
Getting closer
Time for 1 more quick movie
Almost time for the second meal, time to light up the cabin
Start of descend
Touching down ….now !
Before I knew it, we were almost at the end of the flight and we started our descend into Munich. Nice view out the window upon landing due to the dimming sun light. But once we touched down, it started to rain

At least I managed to get some sleep at the Sheraton. I booked a taxi at 0445 to take me to the airport and I was at curbside by 0500. There was almost no one in the check-in area and as I have no bags, decided to use the self service kiosk. 20secs is all it took for me to get check in and boarding pass issued.
Some of lounges weren’t open for another 10 mins so I just walked around the dark and still awakening airside area of Munich Airport.
Once the lounge was open, I only spent 10mins there to have a piece of bread and also a cup of coffee.
After which I decided to head out and search for a smoking booth before boarding. By the time I got to the gate, people were already starting to board the aircraft.
D-AILI taking me to FRA
In Flight
D-AILI is fitted with the new look Recaro seats, it was pretty nice, but as most of you know, J in Europe isn’t anything much to fuss about.
Service was prompt and courteous as usual and it was another full load both in J and Y to FRA.
Start of descend
Downtown Frankfurt
There was also a number of LH Asian crews traveling non-rev in Y, I guess they are on an Asian bound flight out of FRA. I spent most of the time just looking at the sunrise out of the window and soon enough we landed in FRA. It was really busy in FRA and we had to park at a remote stand, the bus journey took forever. By the time I reached the terminal, my colleagues from Singapore had already checked in at the Sheraton Airport hotel and I met up with them there and got the keys to my room. After an hours rest, it was time to head over to the motorshow.
After a hectic 2 days at the motorshow, it was now time to head back home. And being me, I forgot to bring my charger for the digital camera, so after taking so many pictures at the show, my batteries ran out!. Luckily I still had my mobile phone with me so still managed to snap several pictures. This is actually my first time taking this night flight back to Bangkok, usually it’s the afternoon flight. I started walking form the Sheraton Airport Hotel just under 2 hrs before my slated departure time. Very nice and polite customer service agent greeted me at the check in area and ushered me to the F line. Only one more passenger in front of me and in no time I was checked in for my flight to Bangkok.
Finally managed to snap my first E-Jet
After grabbing my boarding pass, I headed towards security, it was really packed tonight, but I was told to go to the priority line for F and J passengers, but guess what, the priority line had really inefficient people running it so the much longer Y line actually moved much faster! After taking a good part of 20mins to get through, I rushed through immigration and went to tax refund before meeting up with one of my colleagues to grab a quick bite at McDonalds. No time for the LH Senator lounge.
After passing security and immigration
After I finished my nice juicy burger, it was time to board the aircraft. It was a long line to get into gate B45 where my B744 is leaving from but as luck would help it, the same friendly customer service agent that greeted me at check in was also at the gate and she recognized me and cut me through the line all the way into the aircraft where she handed me over to the F cabin crew.

Always a nice feeling to be onboard the B744. not too bad today with only 6 passengers in F.
And great crew onboard again. As my camera battery ran out, I had to write down the menu, here it is:

1st course – Broiled lobster tail, Snow crab claw, Smoke duck breast, Hot smoked salmon with pepper (Delicious mind you!!)

Assorted cheese tray and dried fruit
Fresh fruits
German cheesecake
2nd Serving
Fresh fruits, Fruit yoghurt & cereals
Main course – Scrambled egg with chives
Crepe stuffed with mushroom ragout
Noodle soup with Chinese Roast Prok
Bread Selection
The journey itself was fantastic and faultless, I managed to sleep all the way after the 1st meal and only woke up just before the second meal and soon enough we were descending into Bangkok.
Just after disembarking on remote stand, first time on TG from a long haul flight whereby I had to use the stairs!
After landing, I spent my entire time again at the Royal Orchid Spa and the Royal First lounge.
I arrived at the gate when it was ready for boarding and we were bussed to the aircraft as it was parked on a remote bay.
Nice picture taking session on the bus on the way to the remote stand
A rare sight, Druk Air of Bhutan

Usual B772 for this short hop to KUL. It wasn’t full in J and about 80% in Y. I was hoping that this aircraft would arrive on schedule as I only had 1 hour before my next flight to CGK and I have yet to be issued with a boarding pass. I didn’t eat on this leg, just slept all the way to KUL.

Nice MH Golden Lounge and views from the smoking room within the lounge, with TJA ready to return to BKK
Decided not to take photos for this leg as I have been on it so many times before. Only thing was that I was so sick of the J food on this sector, I had the f/a to crab me food from Y instead ehehhehe…and the spicy beef was pretty good
Well hope you guys enjoyed this TR.
My next trips will be:
Hong Kong & Chengdu on CI A330 in J, KI A320 in Y in October
Fukuoka & Tokyo on SQ B772 in J in November

Great repoer and pictures as usual!
But I have to say I'm rather shocked by the BKK-MUC menu. Exact same main courses I had on BKK-FRA 06SEP in Royal Silk. If you add the fact that two J mains are served in Y, TG has actually gone as low as serving Y food on plates in F. Disgusting.
923 F menu is also exact same as 921 in F (10SEP), the food wasn't bad ex-FRA but the salad/main portions are way small IMO. A great shame they have stopped serving caviar though, and no soup also on the menu anymore! Return of wine lists is good, but at the same time it seems La Grande Dame is completely gone, that was a nice alternative to Dom 1999.

Now that you mentioned it, somehow I have to agree with you that their F meals and J meals served with a little bigger serving and on nicer chinaware!
Someone was telling me about TG in F that you can pre order your meals? Where can I see this and whats on the menu, I know that on one of my F flights last yaer, someone preordered lobster. is it only ex BKK? and is it also avail for J pax?
Quoting Lufthansa747 (Reply 1): A great shame they have stopped serving caviar though, and no soup also on the menu anymore!
I know...but at least the French Onion soup ex BKK is raelly tasty ..I had a 2nd serve of that too ehehehhe

F pax only, available from a variety of airports, at least BKK/FRA/LHR/Australia. In true TG fashion, you need to dig up the menus on the different country websites instead of having it listed in one place. I suppose a competent call center agent can help. Ex-BKK:

Amazing reports, the pictures made the whole thing very absorbing indeed.
I love the spa at BKK.I transited in BKK a couple of times earlier this year while flying on TG.Although as a mere J class pax i was only entitled to a couple of complimentary services-not the whole nine yards as F class pax.But the foot massages were great.
Well, 9M-MKR doesn't have a new look. It was equipped with MH's Golden Club Class A332's seats since it started serving MH. 9M-MKR is unique as it is the only one among MH's 11 A333s, which are equipped with different Golden Club seats. Still, it doesn't have the 62" seat pitch as in MH's A332s.
Quoting ThaiA345 (Thread starter): plus Munich is a much nicer airport than Frankfurt to fly into.
But I always wonder, why most Asian carriers favour FRA over MUC? In MH's case, MUC has been dropped from its network for more than a decade.

I was about to quote the same incident. I can't believe it happened onboard MH's aircraft too.
Quoting ThaiA345 (Thread starter): Menu, with special insert for the Tengku’s (Royal family) recipe, as the meal features was in line with Malaysia’s 50th Birthday
They still serve it! By the way, did they collect back the special (bookmark sized with golden ribbon) card? I was kind of reluctant to return it back (but then gave up) when the cabin staff in my last trip to CGK requested it to be returned together with the menu.
How was it compared to the rival next door? From what I can see, their room and toilet look inferior (in all aspects I am afraid) than that of Hilton Kuala Lumpur. I think their rates are higher than Hilton, aren't they?
Wow! TG really excel in this area. Why can't MH think of something like this for their lounges?

Awww Mr Azizul Thanks again for your insight, you are truly one expert on MH Don't know if you are as goos with AK eheheheh :P
Quoting KHI747 (Reply 4): i was only entitled to a couple of complimentary services-not the whole nine yards as F class pax
Thats interesting to note. So for J pax you can't get the full 1 hour treatment? Are you able to pay for it though?
Quoting 9MMAR (Reply 5): But I always wonder, why most Asian carriers favour FRA over MUC?
I guess its just historical reasons, majority of airlines already fly into FRA and already have code share agreements with other european carriers from FRA. Even on some occasions when I want to fly to MUC and then connect somehwere else, even LH advise going into FRA as they have a better selection of flights from FRA, on same cases, if you fly into MUC, the connecting LH flight will first take you to FRA and then onward to another aircraft
Quoting 9MMAR (Reply 5): when the cabin staff in my last trip to CGK requested it to be returned together with the menu.
Well, MH is very good at collecting menus and headsets eheheh on my inbound flight to CGK last week, I dropped the menu somewhere between the seats and the f/a actually bothered to throughly search for it ...cost saving measures? eheheh
Quoting 9MMAR (Reply 5): I think their rates are higher than Hilton, aren't they?
Hilton is a much better hotel in sentral, but I like for location, Westin Bukit Bintang, but since I only had an overnight layover in KUL, I picked the Le Meriden as I had to compile more SPG points as only 6 more night before I am platinum on starwood eheheh
Quoting 9MMAR (Reply 5): think you should appreciate her efforts by photographing her (in action) and upload her photo here because the whole world should know!
Well, actually since I hav been going to FRA the past 12 or so months, it has always been her, even when I was once incoming from BCN, she waitied for me at the gate to pick me up and take me to TG F check in.
Quoting Fuffla (Reply 8): I am quite suprised they do not serve caviar anymore, is that really the case?
Yes, the last time I had caviar on TG F was back in May this year, not anymore now , for one of the best quality caviar served in F, SQ is the place to be now ...
I can so relate... There came a point I was so "muak" of MAS hot savouries in First Class.
Quoting ThaiA345 (Thread starter): After that, it was quickly through immigration and the first security check, bought some magazines and then rest of the time was spent in the badly in need of renovation Royal Silk Lounge!
Actually, I think the only lounge worth a mention in KLIA is really Golden Lounge. Otherwise the rest of the airline lounges are really sorry looking. Actually, SQ's SK lounge in that airport looks much worse than TG's!
Quoting ThaiA345 (Thread starter): their regional crews are pretty grumpy and not as pleasant as their long haul crews.
If you think that's bad, wait till you get the crew for the BKK-India flights. Service levels will plummet to the never-never land of no return!
Quoting ThaiA345 (Thread starter): I decided to pamper myself with a 1 hour fill body massage.
Is it an oil massage fully naked with a happy ending?
I think you chose the lamb right? It looks so much more appetising compared to my lamb on the SQ flight.

Thank you very much Sam! Actually I also enjoy reading all your reports and love the photos you take especially those that you contribute to Airliner World and other I am currently based in Jakarta, but Perth's my home, and when I make a run to SYD, I promise to look you up By the way, I will take the B744 in the old F and J config anytime to PER, you are much luckier getting better aircraft operating the BKK-SYD route while we are stuck with TG's A333 to PER. But from Oct, its the B773, but these has horrible J seats, and only 1 aircraft so far has been retrofitted

Well Mr Soh, after seeing the new J and especially F lounge of TG in BKK, even my favourite SK lounge in SIN T2 looks really pale in comparison. Maybe another close one is CX in HKG.

How would you compare it against the A340-300? I flew the TG 346 MEL-BKK last year and UL 343 KUL-CMB this year and I would say that the 343 is quieter yet again. The 777 isn't all that quiet (subjectively).

The last time I flew the A343 was quite some time back (when SQ still had their Celestar) But if my memories serves me correct, both the A343 and A333/2 are much quieter in comparison to the A345/6. But in my report, I was specifically comparing in terms of its direct competition and in this case its the B777 family, namely the 300 version and yes, it is much quieter than the B777's! This is also very distinct in my mind as my inbound flight to BKK before my connection with the A346 was done by a TG B772 and yes, it was much noisier than the A346

Quoting Christao17 (Reply 18): Glad to see that TG's first class service is still up to par
Yes, you are right on this one, although these days, their J service has really different service levels, with their regional routs being much worse than their long haul ones
