On Saturday the 15th of September, my plans were to go to the Houston Wings & Wheels event at the 1940 Terminal Museum, but I overslept after a late day at work. If I was going to Houston, I wanted to have time to get from HOU to IAH and see the European heavy jets come in, and so I wanted to catch the first flight. Alas, I woke up at 830am and changed my plans. The 11am 767-300 to LAX looked like there were lots of seats available and the return flights were completely empty. I had to decide between that, or the 1pm DFW-ORD 777. Since I had flown a 777 recently and had seen ORD quite a bit recently, I decided to go visit LAX, which I never manage to go visit.

I checked in from home, on the AA nonrev website, and was number 6 on the list requesting first class on the 767. There were 21 people booked in first, out of total of 30 seats, so for the time being, I had my hopes up for first.
At about 9am I got to the airport for my 11:20am flight. At this point I knew that it was delayed, with the aircraft coming inbound from MIA at 11:20am, so they posted a departure time of 11:50am, which I didn't really believe. It's too optimistic to think you can turn a 767 in 30 minutes, but it let everyone know it was late so that's the idea. I had lots of time to wander around the beautiful DFW Terminal D. My flight would be leaving from Gate 22, which is the central gate in the terminal.

Above this 737 you can see the west side maintenance hangar. At night this area is full of 767s and 777s. AA recently acquired the old DL hangar on the east side of the airport, and it was full of 757s when I saw it yesterday.

So then I went to the DFW Club, using my Priority Pass lounge access. In the Airport Lounges area, usually the DFW Club is club lounge 3, which is also the Korean Air lounge. But since there was a Korean Air flight operating, they moved the DFW Club to lounge 4, which was a surprise to me. Lounge 4 is the Lufthansa lounge, so I go to go inside the LH lounge for my first time! The group that runs the Priority Pass DFW Club also runs the KE, BA, LH clubs--all with excellent views of the ramp and west side runways.
The snacks/drinks area. The alcohol was not self-service, but was on display to show what they offered. I was just going to have a coffee and also took a bottled water for my flight. The lounge attendant came over to ask me if I'd like anything from the bar. At first I said no, but then I decided that some Bailey's to go in my coffee might be fun, so she brought me some.

I turned on my laptop, using the T-Mobile wifi that is in all terminals and areas of DFW to check the standby list. I saw that now there were 26 confirmed passengers in first class on my flight plus I had moved down the list, as some AA revenue standbys were now asking for upgrades, so I knew it would be coach for me. Oh well. There were about 60 open seats in coach, so I knew it would be a good flight either way. I did visit the snack bar again and took some crackers and a granola bar for snacks on my flight. I had eaten a big breakfast, and didn't feel like buying a $5 wrap on my flight to LAX. (Although I'm inconsistent because I buy $6 sandwiches at Starbucks all the time).

My AA 767-300 landing on 18R. ATC must have worked out their request to land on the west side to save a few minutes. Then the 737 800 that was still on my gate pushed out as the 767 rolled out.

As soon as it was parked, I went downstairs and waited for them to call my name.
The delay posted to 12:10pm now. I started doing the math. I was going to catch the 3:15pm flight home. I was still OK, estimating there at like 1:40pm.

They called my name, giving me seat 29C---a center aisle! Yuck. I wanted a window. But they were trying to turn the 767 as quickly as possible, and I knew they had no time to deal with frivolous nonrev requests! I had some homework to do for a class I'm taking, so I decided it would work out. Anyway, I was boarding a 767-300!
View from my seat. At the time I had all three seats in the middle to myself, but later a guy sat down on the other aisle seat. The middle seat remained empty. The plane was nice and spacious. I don't know if I've ever sat in the rear main cabin area on an AA 767-300. I fly on them every year in coach to Hawaii, but that's on a confirmed ticket and I generally manage to book the family in the front area of coach. It felt just like my DL ATL-EDI flight that I took in May. With the exception that I wasn't on DL and wasn't going to Scotland, of course!
That was the only picture I took on the flight. They showed the new flight tracker for taxi out and takeoff. Then about 20 minutes later into the flight they showed CBS Eye on American. I thought they would have shown a movie, but they only showed the TV programming. I had some work to do for a class I'm taking so I did that. There was a toddler sitting behind me who was kind of loud, so I put on my Bose QC2 headset and put on some music turned down low enough so that I could concentrate.

It seemed like a short taxi out, but it actually was 14 minutes. On 18L the engines roared to life, where the sound was decent, but nothing like sitting in front of the engines! It wasn't as powerful a takeoff as I had expected, but it sufficed for good, quality entertainment for my Saturday.
We climbed up to FL 380 and seemed like we made up some time enroute. It said estimated arrival time of 1:15pm on the flight tracker, so that was good. Most people shut the windows so I didn't get to see out too much until landing.
We came straight in for runway 25L. I could feel the plane moving around in the strong winds as we landed, but it was a good landing. I saw the AA terminal to our right as we taxied off the runway at 1:15pm, but then I saw the Eagle terminal, and then we stopped. And we waited. And we waited. Due to our off-schedule landing an hour late, there was no gate for us. We finally parked some 40 minutes after we landed! That part was miserable. Everyone was getting agitated and restless.
The flight attendant had announced 4 connection cities, FAT, SBA, SFO, and SJC, so there weren't too many connections based on that.
One thing worth noting, as we turned off the runway the video screens started doing a post-landing announcement and video reminding everyone to stay seated, etc.
We were parking at gate 42B, and when we got close to our gate, we shut down and were towed in. LAX seems extremely tight on space, so it's amazing they get so much done with such little space. To our right there were a bunch of Expressjet Delta Connection ERJs. The last time I saw so many Expressjet planes in DL colors was in SHV at their hangar!
The first thing I did after deplaning was going to the "Service Center" which has a Self-Service checkin machine and checked in for my flight to DFW then connecting on Eagle to SHV. It was about 2pm and my flight was at 3:15pm, so I didn't have too much time. After checking in for first class, I logged onto a computer and checked the list. 4 people booked in first class with only myself and 2 TWA retirees looking for first class, so it looked great. There were only about 40 in coach on the 737-800. A nice, quiet Saturday evening flight.

They did something strange and unexpected. My 767-300 that I got off of was going to MIA. They were sending a 767-200 to DFW. I thought I had that wrong, but when we got to DFW, the same 767-200 was there, parked next to us, N321AA. The last time I flew a 767 LAX-DFW they had to change it to a 200 series due to maintenance.

That 737 way back there on the jetbridge is my plane. 3CS or N961AN.
I went by Starbucks for an iced Chai and some roasted almonds. Then I went to my gate, 49A, and they called my name. Seat 6F! And it was a dinner flight in first, so I was hooked up!
Soon we boarded, and I found that we had an excellent crew. They were excited about how empty the plane was and how relaxed everyone was going to be. I didn't mention on the previous flight, but in both cases, they did preboard families with children and people in wheelchairs. That came up as a question in a recent AA trip report.

Ah yes, the inflight service. Everyone in first class was offered a pre-departure beverage. I just had a glass of water. After takeoff we were given a bowl of warmed nuts. I love those, but had eaten some roasted almonds that I purchased at Starbucks, so I declined when offered seconds! For my cocktail I chose a Glenlivet Scotch with a glass of water on the side. AA is the only airline that I know of that serves single-malt Scotch on domestic flights in all classes. Most just have that mouthwash, I mean, Dewars blended scotch.
Then we received the hot towel treatment, and yes, they were cloth. The FA who was serving in first did a really nice touch. Rather than asking what each person wanted to eat, he presented each person with two complete trays, so they could see the selections and then choose. I chose the turkey sandwich on croissant. And with it I had a Cabernet.
They showed Oceans 13 as the film, which I watched, but with my windows open in hopes of seeing some traffic flying by. I saw a 737 fly underneath us over Arizona somewhere, but nothing else.

And I decided to walk through the enclosed bridge from terminal C to D then then into B to get to my Eagle gate, rather than take the Skylink this time.
The Eagle flight was at night and not much to write about so I'll just leave it here.

The seats are comfortable. They are the same seats as in first on the S80 and also the same as the recent standard for 767 and 777 int'l business (not the new lie flat ones). They are nice, with good recline. No legrests or anything, but no complaints either.
Yes, it's big and spacious. Restaurants and shops on two levels as well. If that's not quite enough, you can take the Skylink train around the airport, which I do recommend.

Thanks! I was able to score first because the plane was so empty! This was the 3:15pm and there was a 767 at 2:45pm, so it's a bit much capacity on the route for a Saturday night! Anyway, since, at departure time, there were lots of empty first class seats, I could get one.

Chug down a beer and show me what you do. Are you a CSA or executive position? It's that I love AA a lot more than I used to . . . I actually want to see if AA is hiring in Canada since I am not able to work in the US. I can work with AA hopefully as a CSA! I arrive in DFW on Oct. 15. If you're up for it, great. If not, no worries! Let me know. I may actually just hang out in the Admirals Club since i am on a international flight in Business.

actually the reason why i wanted to ask if you were CSA or exec is more to do with your location. If you are working in the office building, it could be more inconvenient for you to come to airport. If you are working at the airport as CSA or whatever, it would be great to meet with you if chance allows (like a lunch break so that it doesn't interfere with your schedule). Take care!
