Hello all. I wanted to share this trip report regarding my recent experience with Spirit Airlines since there aren't many TRs regarding NK on A.net. And this is my first trip report since joining the site!

I flew from LAX to Tampa to enjoy an extended visit with my sister and family in the northern burbs of Tampa. The tickets was purchased 3 days prior to the trip for a rock-bottom cost of $155.80. After researching the ticket cost (with US, DL, and UA) and finding that the NK ticket was approximately $100 cheaper, I decided to take the plunge and purchased a seat (21C on both legs of the trip) and one checked bag ($5) via Spirit's rather crappy looking but functional website.

The trip started at LAX on the 9:50pm departure of flight NK709 from Gate 35 in terminal 3. The gate area itself was rather dreary, but the boarding process went very smoothly as the pax were called up by boarding group. The cabin crew and gate agents were friendly and I received a smile from the FA as I boarded. The A/C was a A319 with the current grey pixel scheme (I hate the new NK colors that were just released in the last week or so). The interior was very clean and features a soothing (if not boring) grey leather interior. After reaching my seat, I realized part of the reason why the ticket was SO inexpensive. Very tight seat pitch! Please keep in mind that I am 6'3" and weigh in at 230lbs, but I had to wedge myself into that seat! Fortunately, it was an aisle seat so I had some breathing room! It was a completely full flight, but we departed the gate on-time, taxied out, and very quickly the flight crew was informing everyone that we were number 2 for take-off. Relatively short take-off run and we were airborn. The flight itself was completely uneventful - 2 beverage services with limited number of boxed snacks (everything, including soda and water was BOB - oh, and the FA are only allowed to accept credit/debit cards - no cash allowed!). The FA's were relatively attentive, and quickly executed the first bev service so that the cabin lights could be dimmed so the pax could sleep. Minimum chat from the flight crew also helped with the need for some sleep! Landing at DTW was smooth and we taxied directly into gate C3.

Arriving at DTW at 3:40am (about 10 minutes early) didn't provide me with much of a chance to sample concession foods or see many aircraft movements due to the VERY early hour! Maybe next trip!

I managed to find a bagel and a cup of coffee and trudged down to gate C9 to wait for the next leg of the trip. The boarding of NK631 to TPA went without issue; again, I was greeted by the FA when I boarded the A319. The aircraft was also in good condition and very clean. However, this flight was only about 40 percent capacity. Again, I sat in seat 21C and had the entire row to myself!. FA's were attentive and seemed rather relieved that the flight had so few pax.One beverage service with the same ridiculous payment restrictions (no cash accepted) and a couple of progress announcements from the flight crew - and we arrived in Tampa about 20 minutes ahead of schedule!

Overall, I had a surprisingly positive experience with Spirit - I was happy that the aircraft were fairly new and very clean! Also, the staff seemed to be helpful and pleasant to deal with during both the flights.

I am open to any questions! Thanks for listening  Big grin

Not so ridiculous, as a flight attendant i don't want to carry cash around for 3 or 4 days until i get back to the base.

And at my airline you can buy coupons inside the terminal to use on board the aircraft. (if you don't have a card or don't want to use it).

Cuz of the payment restrictions, service must take a very long time to complete

The payments are processed through a hand held scanner very similiar to what I've seen when returning a rental car. The only problem was that there was only one of these devices on the flights, which caused the FA's to pass the scanner back and forth to process payments! I can certainly understand the comment from Citrus1 regarding FAs not wanting to carry around a large amt of cash - I didn't think of it from that perspective.

At CO, we deposit our cash for the days flight(s) with the gate agent at our layover station at the end of our duty day. No need to carry cash around till the end of the trip. Problem solved. At base, we deposit them in safes located around the terminal.

- Agreed, plus I never seem to have the right change too, that always seems to be an issue! Nope, card payment only is the way to go.

Great TR.

It would be better with pics.

However, thank you for sharing.

Did you do a return TR? Some airlines let you tick a box to order food and drinks and headsets at time of original reservation. This is another way of reducing cash handling on board. (Jetstar on long haul services, and Air Asia has a window that shows you what the food will look like).
