I like to plan ahead. I knew that I would have a long weekend off from school in October so in August I was looking for some cheap international airfare. I have always wanted to go to Mexico City but it was usually too expensive but this time, it was priced just right! So I bought the ticket with sectors going DTW-MIA-MEX and MEX-ORD-DTW. Kind of strange but I was able to fly 738’s and 752’s and this would be my first time EVER flying with AA.
The day arrived and I was really excited since it was my first time to Mexico. I woke up at 4:30am, showered, got dressed, finalized my bags and let for DTW at around 5am. The drive is easy but boring that early in the morning. I arrived, parked, checked in and went through security with no problems. After that, it was about 7am and boarding was about to start for my flight to Miami.
Some of the pictures are bad because I took most without a flash and it was hazy in DTW

The flight was full in both classes…mainly filled with people going on cruises.
We backed out and then headed to the runway.

Rolling past the new North Terminal
I fell asleep right after take-off and woke up right we were descending into MIA
Pulling into terminal D
MIA airport was interesting. My mom only told me horror stories about her and my dad’s experiences there. I figure once all the construction is done it should be pretty nice. I walked through all the AA concourses and found A and the far end of D to be the nicest. One thing I did not like at all was the food selection and price! There was really nothing and it was all REALLY expensive! Maybe there are better things in the other concourses.

Arrive – 16:05
Actual arrival – 16:40
Our plane arrived late so we started boarding a little late but not too bad. I heard the desk agent say that there were only going to be 74 people on the flight, which I didn’t believe because there were defiantly more than 74 people in the gate area.
Soon after I took this picture, the F/A announced that the door has been closed and we were ready for take-off…then I took this:
There really were only 74 people on the flight! First class was full but there were many seats open in Y! I got an entire row to myself! It was awesome!
We had a quick taxi and take-off
I tried as best I could to get a picture of the international terminal
Somewhere over Mexico…I hate not having a map!
The flight was uneventful. I slept or read the whole time. They had some weird CBS show on the screens but it didn’t look interesting. The service on AA is ok for what they offer. The F/A’s went through twice with drinks and once with the overly priced buy-on-board food.

Parking next to an AM 737
Customs in MEX took forever!!
Once I finally passed customs I went looking for the metro to the city, which is at the complete other end of international arrivals!
Overall was neither impressed nor dissatisfied with AA. The seats weren’t that bad, service is what I expected, the only thing I didn’t like were the monitors down the aisle on the 738’s.

Very good report and nice pictures!!
MIA is truly a really bad area, and I cannot wait until construction is done and completed, it is much needed!
As for food and prices, definetly agree, had to stick with a Pizza Hut in the E area, and it was quite expensive, higher then what I am used to at STL.
I have yet to ride the Boeing 737-800 with AA, have with ATA but not this airline!

Good things come to those who wait, better things come to those who go AFTER it!

Why is it so expensive at MIA? It was so much cheaper even at MEX and ORD
It mainly has to do with the rents that are charged to the businesses that are in the airport. YYZ is the most expensive airport in North America and MIA is not far behind it I'm afraid.

Quoting PRAirbus (Reply 4): Why do you say AA overcharges for snacks?
For what you get, it is over priced...but i also paid way too much for food at MIA airport! $9 for pizza and a 20oz sprite!! Ridiculous!

Nice TR! How was it down in MEX? I go there about once a year and I still manage to discover something new. It's a great city really. I wouldn't know about the walking to the metro station cuz I always have someone pick me up but the longest I've ever waited for customs in MEX was 15 minutes and it was a regular time of day (not wee hours of the morn).
I really liked the city...as soon as i could afford to go back i would. There are a lot of things i missed because i was only there for a two full days
