In the past few years middle eastern carriers have expanded at a rapid rate into the Asia-Pacific region including none other Etihad Airways. With success on their AUH-SYD route they recently started a 3 weekly service from AUH to BNE via SIN with the A330-200 aircraft. To promote their new service Etihad released companion fares from BNE to SIN for a mere $999AUD which was a relative bargain compared to what QF, SQ and BA were offering to fly you directly SIN. So I took the opportunity and booked 2 tickets to SIN for 8 day trip as well tickets to Kuala Lumpur

After being caught in peak hour traffic I was cutting it fine and made check-in 30 seconds before it closed not to mention how chaotic the QF terminal was. After check-in I proceeded straight to security check point and to the gate.

Boarding commenced at around 9.15 for all passengers. I was quite eager to see the new QF interiors. My overall impressions of the new J-class covers was why even bother, the white was a terrible choice though I was quite pleased with the new purple Y-class interiors

Mr VHVXB,
What an outstanding report featuring one of the new airlines serving this wide brown land. You have captured the true essence of travel in your magnificent photos and richly detailed summary, which gives one the feeling of almost being there, when in reality they are not.
The photos of KLIA almost bring a tear to my eye as I view them, as I recollect the many wonderful times I have had there this past year, it is most unfortunate you were not able to fly my airline of choice, Malaysia Airlines, to fully experience them redefined.
Once again 10/10 Mr VHVXB, well done, and thankyou for contributing to this central hub of airline travels.
Warm regards,
Chrisrad

Great report and fantastic pics VHVXB! My poor PC couldnt handle the pics so I checked them out on Photobucket, very detailed, thank you!
I visited KL earlier this year. I didnt really think it was too great but I may have to make another trip before I make my judgement. I think a visit on Air Asia X is in order!
I'm going to SIN on the 29th of October on EY's inaugural 77W flight out of BNE and i'm really looking forward to it, even moreso now thanks to your report!
How did you find the service of the FA's and the food? Does EY promote their Arab roots or are they more an 'international' airline from what you experienced?
Also i'm curious to know what you (as a non Brisbanite) think of our International airport. I like it, it gets the job done with just enough to keep you occupied while you wait for your flight - a transit airport this will never be! But I feel there should be more things to do, see and eat landside (even after the reno's are done).

It looks like like lamb with couscous to me. But still, it look delicious!

You lucky SOB! You managed to get the tickets? I have had 3 failed attempts so far because the tickets are always snapped up by morning. Always hard to wake up because i am always at some club the night before...
Quoting VHVXB (Reply 1): If your in Malaysia make sure you visit Melaka
Definitely a must. Melaka is my favourite getaway for my partner and I because we occassionally drive there for dinner. It is only a 2hour drive from Spore.
Quoting VHVXB (Reply 1): The main street in Melaka - Jonker Street
Jonkers Walk, this is where we come to raid the street hawkers of the food. However, the night market (pasar malam) is only operational on Fri, Sat and Sun (6.30pm onwards). We already know which food stall to raid so we target it, move on to the next.. .and the next... and the next.... and the next.... then we drive back to Singapore.
Quoting VHVXB (Reply 2): Straights of Melaka - No Pirates today
Funny you should mention it. The Straits of melaka is one of the world's most dangerous stretch of waterway. The narrow body of water is a very condusive environment for the pirates to strike because they do not have to travel far to attack the ship, then escape into the thick and lush jungles of Sumatra, that covers the shoreline.
I would have thought some one would get pissed at a picture of a China Airlines photo up there rather than one from MAS.
Quoting VHVXB (Reply 2): The garden inside the terminal
Interesting fact. When building the airport, they actually transplanted a piece of the rainforest and plonked it right where you saw the "garden". So it is really not a manicured piece of land you witnessed, but really the remains of a genuine rainforest.
Quoting VHVXB (Reply 2): Sentosa Island - taking a cable car from Mt Fabre
I live just down the road to your right. Follow the elevated highway towards the TALL office block on the distance, I am just across the road. So yes, I live by the sea so I have a view of the passing ships everyday. The mall you see to the left of the cable car (Vivo City) is like a 2nd home to me.

I have memories of visiting the Batu Caves and all those stairs. I went to Sentosa Island and the Night Safari in 2004 - both great value, though I really needed more time in both places than the tour allowed. The Aquarium at Sentosa was great to walk through.
Will be interesting to see how the inflight service on Etihad compares with Air Asia X out of OOL with their foot long hot dogs and Aussie chicken pies.

Great report with fantastic pics (especially from KL)! Nice mix of aircraft and airlines. I flew Etihad two years ago and was impressed by the carrier - however EK's meal presentation on my BNE-SIN flight last year looked a bit more advanced. Anyway, just a matter of time until EY improves that.

Singapore would have to be one of the best airports I have been through.
where did you stay in Singapore?
When I came back from the UK a couple of months ago I stayed in the Changi Village Holtel. Best thing was it was on the flight path to the airpoty, so I could see what was coming in.

Great trip report. Photos are perfect, perhaps some of the best I have ever seen. The food does not look too bad, however similar to what MH serve in Y class. It is indeed interesting to see a new airline from Sydney, and I am sure will give SQ a run for their money LOL.
Thanks for your lovely comments. I'm glad you enjoyed my report.

KLIA is truly a great airport and its quite understandable on why they continuously receive awards
Quoting Chrisrad (Reply 8): it is most unfortunate you were not able to fly my airline of choice, Malaysia Airlines, to fully experience them redefined.
There will always be another time to return to Malaysia on Malaysian Airlines and to hear obligatory welcome line of "Puan puan da tuan tuan selamat datang" and hopefully having some satay while on board

Ahh well hopefully your next trip will change your perspective of KL.
Quoting BNEFlyer (Reply 9): How did you find the service of the FA's and the food?
The crew were great on both legs nothing to complain about. Food was good on the BNE-SIN leg as was the dinner on the return leg though breakfast could have been better
Quoting BNEFlyer (Reply 9): Does EY promote their Arab roots or are they more an 'international' airline from what you experienced?
No not really. They are pretty much following in EKs footsteps with international crews .Only thing Arab about EY are the inflight annoucements.
Quoting BNEFlyer (Reply 9): Also i'm curious to know what you (as a non Brisbanite) think of our International airport
Nice little airport though I didn't get to see much as we were in a rush. Hopefully next time.
Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 10): You lucky SOB! You managed to get the tickets?
I got there at 7am. There was only a small queue at that time so I was able to secure tickets at time which suited me.

Pretty much the story in both Malaysia and Singapore everything opens late morning and closes late night. Very different compared to Australia

Quoting Chrisrad (Reply 18): What didn't you think was so good? I really like KL it's such a mix of old and new.
I think I had this idea that it would basically be similar to Singapore - clean, modern, tourist friendly. It wasn't that dirty and it is partly modern, but I found it so tourist un-friendly. I tried to catch the train into the centre of the city from my hotel and it took me over an hour!
And the heat was something else. Now i'm used to heat & humidity and I had been in Bangkok and Phuket for 2 weeks prior to KL, but that was just unbearable!
Also I flew into the LCCT and that along with the long trip to/from the city didn't make for a fun stay. Perhaps I should go back? I'm off to Singapore again on Monday, on EY - looking forward to that though!
Quoting VHVXB (Reply 17): Nice little airport though I didn't get to see much as we were in a rush. Hopefully next time.
