Day Trip To Amsterdam With Easy Jet

After seeing the many photos on the various aviation photo sites, I thought I should at least see what is at Amsterdam airport.
Over here in Australia one of the major TV stations shows on a Friday night a programme called Airline covering the day to day operations of Easy Jet. After seeing that show I thought are Easy Jet that bad?, So I am flying to Amsterdam to find out…

Since this was my first time flying with Easy Jet Dad and I were at the airport so early that checkin for the Amsterdam flight had not opened yet. We were the first ones to check in. On the way to security we stopped off to get the latest Airliner World magazine and that is where the days’ plans very nearly came unstuck when dad inadvertently dropped the passports. Dad only realized the passports were missing before we went through security and immigration etc.

Here are a few of the aircraft I saw while we were waiting to board.

After a frantic search someone had thankfully handed the passports in and the day was saved. Going through security and immigration was painless. Ine thing I was worried about with Easy Jet was the unassigned seating. I was expecting a mad survival of the fittest dash for the best seats. Since we were in the first boarding group it was not as bad as I thought, but I am not keen on the idea. How hard is it to assign a seat at check in?

To board we had to go through what reminded me of what they use to load cattle on a truck and then down stairs and across the tarmac which was not too bad today but would be terrible in the winter.

Take off was smooth. Flight over England and the North Sea was fairly smooth. Easy Jet sell food and drink on board, but did not buy anything.

Approach into Amsterdam was rough. During the long taxi to the low cost terminal various airlines were seen like many KLM aircraft, Olympic, Kalitta Air 747-100 (not many of these left), Armavia and Ethiopian etc.

Once through immigration we made the long trek to the massive observation deck. Up there you get a good view of what is going on, but since Amsterdam is so big you cannot see everything. A bit of walking is required from one end of the deck to the other to see what is coming and going.

After most of the day on the deck it was time to check in for the return to Liverpool. After the long trek to check in, and through Immigration and finally to the gate, I was glad to get on the plane as I was absolutely knackered.

It was a long taxi to the runway and the flight was generally smooth back to Liverpool.

Descend came sooner than I expected Landing was smooth and we were taken to the terminal by bus. Innigration was quick and were soon in the car driving back to Manchester to to hotel room for a well deserved sleep.

CONCLUSION

Flying with Easy Jet is not far off catching a bus as facilities in the terminals are basic in the low cost section and everything is buy on board. Next time I would rather pay a bit more and fly with an airline that was in the main terminal, instead of the low cost terminal which is a million miles from anything. But they did get me there and back on time and in one piece.

My experience was not as bad as the TV show portrays Easy Jet to be.

Hi Ryan,

Nice report!
You were lucky with some aircraft I can see. An AT 747 is not very common at AMS, although in the summer period they pop up a couple of times a week.
Hope you had a pleasant stay in our small country ( with a big airport )  Smile

Thanks for sharing!
Cheers,
DALCE

Really great TR.

It is good that you liked your flight with Easy Jet and had a good experience with them.

The low cost terminal at MAS is really far away from everything as you say. Therefore it is better to pay little more to get the main terminal .

Really great pics.

thank you for sharing.

If you watch the show carefully you will find that most of the troubles are caused by people turning up too late to check-in and then they get all shitty, or people blaming EasyJet for the weather.

That show is more of a reflection on the travelling public than EasyJet...I never had any issues with them but then I have to admit, as long as I arrive in one piece I tend not to piss and moan about things when flying as they generally get sorted. This is why I wouldn't fly RyanAir as they just dump you if it goes tits up.

Jafa39 I agree with you on your Ryanair comment. I have read many horror stories abouth things going wrong and people being left to fend for themselves.

You are spot on about the TV show. It is usually the people who cause the problems.

Ryan

I have flown Ryanair loads of times from Leeds and Man and never had any issues. New planes, cheap fares what more do you need???

Flying Easy next Feb as going to PMI for my birthday. Looking forwad to it.

Good report!

Ryan
I've flown with Easyjet over 20 times now & never had a bad flight with them yet...unlike Ryanair but dont get me started on that! If you go back to AMS with only hand baggage dont come landside stay airside(which I normally do) & you can walk all the way up & down D,E,F,G & H piers getting very close to the aircraft! The best place for me has to be the great leather chairs at the end of D pier although the automatic sun blinds can be a bloody nuisance!! Would love to know what the Royal Air Maroc B747-400 was doing in AMS? the only thing I can think of would be maintenance with KLM!
Great trip Report!

Nice report, thanks for sharing! One small correction: easyJet's IATA code is U2

Also interesting to see a UA 777 at night in AMS, must have gone mechanical or something?

Nice report an pix, thanks for putting it together.

- I don't think it's really them, more shows the public in bad light, that said, they could be a little more flexible in certain issues, after all, rulls are made to be broken!  Smile

Quoting Ryan h (Thread starter):
So I am flying to Amsterdam to find out…

- Good on you!

Quoting Ryan h (Thread starter):

- Yes, cattle is what we are to most LCC's, shame they took the romance out of flying.

Quoting Ryan h (Thread starter):

- Excellent, at least you actually have a feel for them, though it might be different if you had a cancelled flight or large delay.

Regards

Mark

Royal Air Maroc occasionally operates the 744 into AMS. The Morrocan comunity in the Netherlands is quite large which justifies operating the 744. Especially in the high season we see the AT 744 a couple of times a week. In the low season AT rarely operates the 744 into AMS, but in stead we get a nice mix of 737's and 321's.

Brgds,
DALCE
