Chengdu (CTU) – Jiuzhai Huang Long (JZH)

Flight: Sichuan Airlines 3U 8615
Aircraft: A319
Registration: B-6176
First Flight: 10 May 2007 !! Brand New !!
ETD: 0715
ATD: 0745
ETA: 0805
ATA: 0830
Flight Time: 40min
Cruise: 32000 feet
Seat: 4A
Class: Economy

Pre Flight:

After 3 tiring days of touring Chengdu and Mt Ermei, we all had to drag ourselves out of bed at 0430 in the morning. I had the task of giving everyone morning calls too . We arrived at Chegdu airport which was pretty nice, but we had to get to the communist era terminal which was used for flights within Sichuan province and that was pretty bad, it was actually clean, but it lacks facilities and such, thank god that I managed to find a walkway which links it to the new terminal after security control, so that’s where some of us spent our time before boarding was called.

The communist era terminal used for flights within Sichuan province only

There was a delay as there was heavy fog at our destination. I am pretty excited again as this is also going to be my first time on Sichuan airlines and the destination is Jiu Zhai Gou which is a world heritage site and some people say it’s the most scenic and beautiful place in the world. Plus, the airport itself is one of the highest in the world at 10,000 + feet. With treacherous mountains on its left and right, and also major drop offs at both ends of the runway. Going to be exciting indeed.

B-6176, a 4 month old A319 ready to take me to JZH

In Flight:

As the aircraft was parked at a remote stand, we took an ancient communist era bus to the aircraft which was a brand spanking new A319, what a departure from the terminal and bus! Legroom was pretty ok and I was fairly comfortable too. This is one of the newer A320 family aircraft I have been on as all previous A320 I have been were made in the 90’s to early 2000’s.

Cabin views

Pretty beat up safety card, probably used by some pax to fan themselves during the summer heat! No need for me to do that this time as it was freezing outside!

Bye bye Chengdu, see you in 3 days !

Inflight Mag, ain’t she cute…

They still bothered to serve a nice full bottle of mineral water to each pax and also a pack of beef (or Yak) jerky which was nice for this short hop to JZH.

Top of descend, what a change in scenery

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q34/thaia345/Chengdu-JiuZhai-Hongkong/DSCF2109.jpg

Touch down! & U-turn at the end of the runway to the terminal, a little more and down the cliff’s edge we go !

I was wide awake the whole way and seeing the descend to landing was really breath taking and really turned out as I imagined. Once we touched down, it started snowing and fog rolled in again. What perfect timing we had! This is really one of the nicest airports I have been to as the terminal is still new, really breathtaking scenery and also scary locationbeing surrounded my cliffs and snow capped mountains. Interestingly enough, when we met up with out tour guide he mentioned that it only started snowing the night before. Really looking forward to the next 3 days of sightseeing here. 3U was a really nice airline to fly on. And hopefully I have the chance to fly with them again soon.

Service: 6/10
Aircraft: 10/10
Food: 5/10

Arrival hall, baggage claim and landside! Brrrr it was freezing!

As snow just fell the night before, ice was all over the road, and there was congestion going out of the airport due to an accident!

This area of China was actually settled by Tibetan tribes people, therefore everything looks pretty…errr…ermmm ethnic

Before going to the hotel, we first headed towards one of the national parks here called Huang Long, I will let the pictures do the talking so you guys know what I really mean!

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q34/thaia345/Chengdu-JiuZhai-Hongkong/DSCF2123.jpg

http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q34/thaia345/Chengdu-JiuZhai-Hongkong/DSCF2125.jpg

The following day, we went to another national park. This one was just breathtaking. Due to the varying altitudes, oxygen was also pretty thin in some areas, but worth the suffering as we get to see both autumn and winter scenes in 1 day!

A tibetan village in the middle of the national park

Off to another part of the park we went. Please do take note, as the park is sooo big (according to the guide, 5 times the size of Singapore!) we had to spend from morning till almost sundown at the park.

On our last day, we went yet to another national park, this one is privately owned by the same owners as our hotel

They really have their way with the English language don’t they!

Love the name of the bus company!

Hotel Stay
City: Jiu Zhai Gou
Hotel: Intercontinental Jiu Zhai Resort
Category: 5 Stars
Room: Deluxe
Service: 06/10, Location: 07/10
This is one of the best hotels I have stayed my entire life. Rooms were huge! Food was good, and the lobby, well as you can see from the pictures, just awesome! Really nothing more than I can say regarding this hotel. I will just let the pictures do the talking.

The next couple of pics are of the hotel lobby! Amazing ain’t it!

JiuZhai Huang Long (JZH) – Chengdu (CTU)

Flight: Sichuan Airlines 3U 8606
Aircraft: A319
Registration: B-6175
First Flight: 22 April 2007 !! Brand New !!
ETD: 1140
ATD: 1135
ETA: 1235
ATA: 1220
Flight Time: 55min
Cruise: 32000 feet
Seat: 3A
Class: Economy

Pre Flight:

After a beautiful but extremely tiring time going up and down mountains (by foot for most of them) viewing exceptionally beautiful scenery, truly one of the most beautiful or should I say the most beautiful places I have been to ( and trust me, I have been all over the world from north to south and east to west) its time to depart for Chengdu.

Passing small townships on the way to the airport

This time we can really get the time to explore Chengdu as on the way to JZH, our time in Chengdu was packed with sightseeing. I really thing everyone has to come to Jiu Zhai Gou at least once in their life to really see what I experienced. I will be glad to provide travel information to anyone interested. Our tour bus took us from the Intercontinental Resort to the airport with 2 shopping detours ( for the ladies in our group) and we still arrived at one of the world’s highest airport with time to spare. I managed to catch a signboard too, the height of the airport is at 3500metres!

Scenes I manage to snap whilst waiting for our a/c

And soon enough, I catch it, and it’s the sister ship of the aircraft that took us here. Its B-1675 which is only around 3 weeks older than its sistership.

In Flight:

Getting ready to take off from one of the highest airports in the world!

Taxi to the end of the runway and then make a u-turn for take off!

Everyone asleep in the cabin and also another light snack and water offered for this short trip

Really nothing much to talk about on this short hop to CTU, but crew was again polite and efficient and I spent all my time again looking out the majestic scenery out the window, although on approach to CTU it was disappointing as it was covered with smog and haze, welcome to the industrial revolution of modern China !

Walking from the communist era gate, into the new terminal and its modern baggage reclaim area, really a stark contrast from one to the other!

Leaving the modern airport

Chengdu (CTU) – Hong Kong (HKG)

Flight: Dragon Air KA825
Aircraft: A320
Registration: B-HSL
First Flight: 18 April 2004
ETD: 0820
ATD: 0815
ETA: 1125
ATA: 1035
Flight Time: 2hr 10min
Cruise: 35000 feet
Seat: 31K
Class: Economy

Pre Flight:

After spending a nice day exploring and shopping a little around Chengdu,

Our hotel, The Crowne Plaza Chengdu

we spent our time after dinner to watch the world famous Sichuan Face Changing Opera.

Got up at another crazy time in the morning for our early departure to Hong Kong.
Amazingly, all the women in our group woke up first, I guess they are all ready to blow their $$$$$ shopping in Hong Kong, or should I say their husband’s $$$$ in my case! CTU airport is really nice and new, and not too small or not too big, just nice, walking distances is also nice a short to the gates.

Something nice to notice is that the A320 taking me to Hong Kong is the very same one which took me here, B-HSL which is a young 3 year old aircraft.

In Flight:

Another polite crew on board this aircraft which was around 90% full.

Another full meal was served with choices of egg or dimsum, and I of course took the dimsum.

Had enough of eggs at all the hotel breakfast the past few days! Another Aussie captain in command for this flight, I guess one can never be too far from home wherever you are in the world (me!!)

Hello Hong Kong….you can never get enough or bored with this city.

Hotel Stay
City: Hong Kong
Hotel: Holiday Inn Express @ Causeway Bay
Category: 3 Stars
Room: Double Room with Sofa Bed
Service: 05/10, Location:10/10

With so many people in the group, not everyone was willing to dish out good money for a nice hotel, so I chose the Holiday Inn Express at Causeway Bay. I stayed here before back in April. Although you don’t get the amenities like in most 4 or 5 star hotels, nothing can really beat this hotel for location, being right next to Times Square. The only problem I had was the rather small rooms and no concierge service. But hey, paying only around USD150 a night where other hotels in the area are charging well above USD350 as it’s the peak season in Hong Kong, I couldn’t really complain.

Lobby and room of the hotel

Pardon the mess in my room! I was packing up the night before we were due to leave HKG

20 October 2007

Hong Kong (HKG) – Jakarta (CGK)

Flight: China Airlines CI 679
Aircraft: A330-300
Registration: B-18309
First Flight: 24 Oct 2005
ETD: 1635
ATD: 1630
ETA: 2020
ATA: 2010
Flight Time: 4hr 20min
Cruise: 37000 feet
Seat: 2A
Class: Dynasty (Business)

Pre Flight:

Time to leave Hong Kong after the wife generously contributed my hard earned $$$$ to the already booming Hong Kong economy. Actually I was also a major culprit as I happily added to my 1:400 scale diecast aircraft collection. I bought close to 40 models while in Hong Kong which is one of the cheapest place to get them. Our last day was pretty quiet as the rest of our group left the night before on CX, leaving me, the wife and my sister in law to spend one more day in Hong Kong. I decided to leave early for the airport as I also wanted to shop around at Hong Kong Shopping Mall or should I say ermm Airport  The airport is packed, really packed.

China Airlines Check in counters

But although how packed it is, I still like HKG airport very much, I rate it even higher than Changi and its my 1st choice for airport of the world. I spent my time shopping,

going to the lounge

and of course spotting.

You really get to see many interesting aircraft at HKG.

My ride back to Jakarta

In Flight:

Another full load on this A333, and its so nice to be in my comfort zone in J class with space to call my own. Actually in F you get even more room, I really can’t wait to try out SQ suites on the A388. Another nice and friendly crew on board again in this CI flight.

They are really starting to make an impression on me. One thing I also notice before I boarded the aircraft that there are tons of flights going to Indonesia as it’s the end of the Indonesian holiday season, CX added extra flights, and even GA used their B744 to HKG.

The next couple of shots are of a/c departing just before us, even GA used their B744 to HKG his busy season!

CTU-JZH-HKG%20Oct%2007/DSCF2361.jpg" width="640" height="480" border=0>

An Air India A310, actually as you can see from the hybrid paintjob, this a/c belongs to CSA Czech Airlines! Must be on temporary lease!

Bye Bye Hong Kong, till we meet again! I am sure it won’t be too long!

AVOD main screen

Another shot of the toilets!

Inflight

Menu and meals!

As most of you know, I fly J and F all the time, but this beef meal I had was the best ever, even better than any beef cooked on CX or SQ F class. Its soft, tender and juicy, and tastes amazing, a rare feat for beef on inflight catering

We left the gate early, but taxiing took an agonising 30 mins. After lift off I watch a movie and had my meal and then I just dozed off all the way till we landed in Jakarta.

Getting ready to land in CGK

And another first for this trip, it’s the first time I had to deplane on a remote stand on an international flight into CGK!

I was so dead beat by then, but I thouroughly enjoyed this trip, and travelling with my family and relatives was also a nice experience. All my flights although were my first time on the airlines I used on this trip, I really enjoyed my flights with CI, and for all you horny guys out there, they have really cute, sexy are attractive f/a’s on their flights, especially in Y. Too bad the wife was with me on this trip, so I was just relegated to taking sneak peaks form the corner of my eyes 

Hope you guys enjoyed this TR from me and I am off again on 30 Oct to Japan for a business trip plus a short 3 days extension holiday on the side. Till then, happy flying and thanks for reading my TR.

Cheers!

ThaiA345,

WOW!

You seem like you had the best holiday ever. I read both your TRs twice. Your HK pictures brought back memories  Smile

The scenery is out of this world .. The Intercontinental Jiu Zhai Resort definitely looks top notch.

I was also quite impressed with China Airlines. Apart from their controversial safety record, i do not see why many people don't like them. In fact, their service (and the cabin ambience) seems excellent! I will definitely try them from AUH.

Thanks for sharing ... once again, your pictures are beyond fascinating!

Also, you mentioned the Communist-era buidlings in Chengdu - EVERYTHING built since 1949 in China is Communist Era, beacuse China is still Communist!

You are welcome. Actually up till a year ago, I also didn't know that this place even existed! But my relatives went last year and were raving about it, so I thought to myself, what the hell, I should just go and have a look too!

CI does sound good, but I've got to say that their menu seems a bit lacking. Only two choices for mains on a 4+ hour flight? Only three courses? And they could defnitely spruce up their menu design and descriptions, make it look a bit classier. That said, at the end of the day its the taste of the food that matters, and I'm glad it was really good.
