Malev is the only airline to offer non-stop service between Toronto and Budapest. MA started this route in the early 90s on a summer charter basis; it later became a scheduled year-round flight. During the summer peak MA operates 5 weekly flights to YYZ and 3 weekly flights during the winter season. Low loads during the winter season coupled with high costs lead MA to suspended the BUD-YYZ and JFK flights earlier this month. Both trans-Atlantic flights are scheduled to resume in the spring of 2008.

Malev was one of the first Eastern European airlines to acquire Boeing 767s. Malev originally ordered 3 Boeing 767-200ERs with PW engines. That order was later modified to 2 B762s equipped with GE CF6s. The third B762 built for MA was delivered to Royal Brunei Airlines. Malev’s B762s have CF6-80C2B4F engines that provide higher thrust and greater range than some of the earlier built B762ERs.

I have included some pictures from previous years.

Malev Flight 097
Oct 26th 2007
From: YYZ Toronto Pearson Intl. (Terminal 3 Gate 36C )
To: BUD Budapest Ferihegy Intl. (Terminal 2A Gate 46)
Boeing 767-27G ER HA-LHA
Seat 17A Economy
Departure: 23:05 (Delayed 00:15)
Arrival: 13:20 (Dayled 13:27)
Flight time: 7hrs 30 min
Flight Levels: 350, 390

The flight was delayed because the aircraft was late arriving from Budapest. The YYZ ground crews did a great job turning around the aircraft. We taxied to runway 23 without delay and held short due to arriving aircraft on runway 15L. The light B762 climbed quickly to FL350. The flight was smooth even though we had strong tail wind over the Atlantic. The strong winds helped us make up time for the delayed departure.

Shortly after take off drinks were served. MA is known for good service and good quality meals. The FA’s were polite and professional; drinks were served 4 times during the flight along with snacks and water during the in-flight movie.

I fell asleep soon after dinner to be woken by the meal carts being pulled up the aisle for breakfast service. When I woke up I found 3 kit kat bars in my lap that were placed there by the FA during the movie. The breakfast sandwich was pretty bad; I found it somewhat dry and tasteless. We made a quick descent over Slovakia and a very smooth landing on runway 13L. Ferihegy wasn’t very busy which made baggage retrieval quick and painless

Malev Flight 096
Nov 9th 2007
From: BUD Budapest Ferihegy Intl. (Terminal 2A Gate 46 )
To: YYZ Toronto Pearson Intl. (Terminal 3 Gate C33)
Boeing 767-27G ER HA-LHB
Seat 2G Business
Departure: 17:50 (Delayed 18:45)
Arrival: 21:50 (Dayled 22:15)
Flight Levels: 290, 320, 350, 380

I was hoping to make the returning flight to Toronto on the new B763, but that aircraft was flying to Bangkok that evening. The aircraft that I flew on to BUD, HA-LHA was already removed from the fleet and was being prepared to join RG. Since the YYZ and JFK flights were being suspended MA’s remaining B762 (HA-LHB) is being wet-leased to Oman Air for the winter. Malev will be receiving another B763 in the spring, which will make MA’s long haul fleet 3 B767s.

BUD was pretty busy on that Friday afternoon. I was very disappointed that the viewing terrace was closed. Boarding started on time but the flight was delayed due to connecting luggage. During boarding process my boarding card was exchanged to a new one with a business seat assigned, having family members who work for MA really helps  Smile.

The plane taxied to runway 31L and waited on the runway for a minute or so before take off. The climb to FL 290 was a little bumpy.

There is no personal IFE on Malev’s B762s. The inflight movie was “the Simpsons” which I really wanted to watch but I fell asleep soon after it started. The FAs were constantly coming around offering water and snacks. About 2 hours before landing another meal was served which I had trouble finishing because I was already stuffed. We made a quick descent into a cloudy and rainy Toronto. We landed on RWY 05, it was the smoothest landing that I ever experienced on a B767.

Once again I was very happy with Malev. MA doesn’t compare to BA, LH, UA or any of the major airlines but they offer great service for a low price.

Hello Kristof!

Thank you for such a nice TR. Actually, I wanted to read one for ages. I really enjoyed it and I'm glad to see the interior of HA-LHB and see how the inflight service looks like there.

Thanks for the great TR KrisYYZ. I enjoyed it very much. It's nice to read a TR in which we do not see one very often involving flights on MA. It brings me many fond memories of my Great Grandparents from Hungary. I hope MA does bring back their service to JFK & YYZ as I would like to fly them to BUD. Though their cabins and inflight product look dated it sounds like the service provided by the cabin crew made it better than what it was.

Hi there very nice TR . I have never seen one on MA before. They look quite nice. J class looks very nice and the food also. The only thing is they should have PTVs in J but other than that really nice.

Thanks for sharing

The cabin hasn't seen any significant refurbishment since the aircraft was delivered to MA in 1993. The J class seats were replaced a few years ago and the carpeting has been changed as well. MA hasn't paid too much attention to it's long-haul fleet. The newly leased B763 still has the old KL seats and there are no plans to upgrade them. With all bias aside, MA does provide excellent service both in J and Y class.

There were 65 pax on the flight, the aircraft seats 185. On the other hand, the BUD-YYZ flight was overbooked.

Hi Kristoff,

Nice to read your trip report.

Little coincidence. During my flight to AMS at October the 26, we passed the HA-LHB during the ride to the runway at BUD, see pic. That time I didn't know that the 767 had destination Toronto.

Regards,

Hans

Nice stuff, don't se many Malev longhaul TR's, so this was good to see.

From this report, I'd fly Malev longhaul.

Hi

nice report, good pics with it! It's a pity to see that MA offers good service, but misses the additional IFE. Their competitors offer the newer equipment with higher service levels. Of course, MA has the advantage to offer nonstop service.
I wouldn't have problems flying with them, only to catch a B762 ride (which is harder and harder to get on!!)
Thanks for sharing,

Eric

Really interesting TR.

The pics and videos are great.

As you say you cant compare MA with other major airlines. But it is a really nice airline.

Hope when MA restart the service to YYZ and JFK in the spring it will work for them.

Thank you for sharing.

Just to make one correction: it was LOT Polish Airlines which ordered as the first Eastern European airlines 767 back in 1988 (Poland was still governed then by a communist party). The decision was made after fatal incident of LOT IL 62 in WAW back in 1986, second tragic accident of this type in 6 years.
LOT received its first 767 (SP- LOA) in summer 1989.

Great report however and thanks for sharing it.

Well the correction wasn't necessary as he only said that Malev was ONE of the first, not THE first Eastern European airline to order the B767.

Excellent report!

I had planned to fly DUB-BUD-BKK (and return) in July, but Malev have advised that the BKK flights are scrapped for the summer season (like the US ones are in winter). Instead I am doing DUB-BUD on MA and BUD-AMM-BKK on RJ (as I enjoyed flying with them earlier this year).

Great to see both Economy and Business represented in one report - quite enjoyed that - and excellent pictures as well. There's hardly any reports on MA on here - so it was well needed - thanks!

I do quite enjoy a spot of flying - more so when it's not in Economy!

Did you notice if they had in seat power in Y or J at all?

Thanks for sharing a good TR with us. I hope to visit Budapest for a few days next summer although I'll be using a LCC possably Easyjet so it will be T1 for me at BUD! I hope one of our Hungarian friends can tell us whats happening with the viewing terrace at BUD? I read somewhere that since BAA took over the airport the viewing terrace has been permanently closed  Angry but then I also read that in winter its sometimes closed for safety reasons! Can anybody give us a update?  confused

The B762 has seat power in J class, the B763 still has the KLM interior. I believe the B737 fleet has inseat power as well.

A group of BUD spotters are in talks with the airport management to build 2 spotting hills. Enjoy your trip!
