The Great Asian Adventure 2007: #3 KI/XN To UPG

This series of trip reports will cover the rest of my stay in Asia, and the flights I took in September/October/November. Namely BKK-MNL-OZC//CEB-DVO-CEB-MNL-CEB-KLO-MNL-CGK-UPG-CGK-SUB-CGK-SUB-AMI-DPS-KUL-BKK-USM-HKT-BKK//DMK-HKT-DMK//BKK-CGK-SIN-MNL-DXB-HAM-FRA-HEL-FRA-HAM-DXB-MNL-BKK-KUL-CRK//MNL-CEB-SIN-KUL-BKK-DXB-FRA-HEL. Alas, a lot of writing so these will be posted in several instalments. First three parts can be found at:

Farewell Bangkok: BKK-MNL-OZC On 5J/2P (47 Pics) (by Lufthansa747 Sep 24 2007 in Trip Reports)
Philippine Island Hopping: CEB-DVO-CEB 2P 737-200 (by Lufthansa747 Sep 25 2007 in Trip Reports)
The Great Asian Adventure 2007: Part 1 PAL J Class (by Lufthansa747 Nov 28 2007 in Trip Reports)
The Great Asian Adventure 2007: #2 CEB-KLO-MNL-CGK (by Lufthansa747 Nov 29 2007 in Trip Reports)

This part covers some flying in Indonesia, namely CGK-UPG-CGK on KI/XN.

My goal was to add at least one more Indonesian airline to my log during this trip, prime candidates being Kartika Airlines and Expressair, as both operate B737-200s. Arranging such a ticket turned out to be rather difficult, but my trusty source of Indonesian domestic bookings worked of course. A big thank you for that!

It turned out that Kartika’s sole B737-200 was undergoing maintenance, so their CGK-BTH-MES was not operating during my stay in Jakarta. Bookings to the east were heavy in anticipation of the end of Ramadan, but we managed a seat on Expressair’s UPG-CGK on 04OCT. Now, I needed a ticket to UPG. Lion Air had a 737-900ER doing CGK-UPG-MDC, but unfortunately that would have cost me Rp 1,000,000 and the connection was too tight. So I settled for the safest of them all, Adam Air, for half the price.

After a quick Blue Bird ride to the airport at 4.30am, I arrived at packed terminal 1C. Apparently 5am is peak time for domestic departures, the initial luggage check at the door had awful lines. I was through quickly though, the check is a joke basically, I don’t know why they bother. With officers chatting with each other or staring at the roof behind the baggage scanning machine, I can’t imagine it being very effective…

KI 782 check-in was rather quiet though, I assume everybody arrives at the last minute. ICAO code used on the monitors at check-in, so DHI 782. All other monitors use IATA 2-letter code…
http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q61/lufthansa747/UPG/6.jpg

I asked for a window seat and they gave me 1F in no time at all, paper tickets are much more convenient than using E-tickets with Adam Air! For E-tickets, they need your signature, photocopy of ID etc. Shockingly though, I was asked to show ID at check-in, seems to be happening more and more often these days.

Paper ticket, flyadamair.com seems to be the only one issuing E-tickets

Boarding pass

I went back outside and upstairs to the viewing gallery. Some photos:

After some time outside, I decided to head to the gate. Another ordeal to get through the baggage screening at the terminal door of course. For some reason, the departure tax is collected by airport staff separately at T1C nowadays while T1B was check-in as usual. It wouldn’t surprise me the slightest if Adam did some monkey business with the departure tax money…

A very lax security check upstairs, and I headed to gate C6 used this morning for Makassar. These people should really make up their mind – one screen says DHI782 Ujung Pandang and the next KI 782 Makassar!

Boarding passes were scanned upon entering the gate lounge, something new that Adam has implemented.
http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q61/lufthansa747/UPG/11.jpg

Boarding started on time at 6am, not surprising considering this would be the first flight of the day for the aircraft.

A cup of water was served as usual, and I fell asleep given the early morning departure. These seem to be popular with Indonesians/Filipinos, the flight was packed (had an empty seat next to me though) just like a PR A330 I took MNL-CEB at 5am. I myself hate such morning flights with passion.

I dozed off for an hour and a half, and woke up as we were starting approach into Hasanuddin airport, Makassar.

I was asked to report to the check-in desk at noon, and that’s what I did. A couple of guys sleeping behind the counters… One took my ticket and disappeared into a back room.

A few minutes later, he came back with a nice hand-written boarding pass for seat 1F. I actually prefer the back of the 732s for engine noise, but didn’t bother asking since they use stickers off a seatmap for the boarding passes.

That concludes this part of my Asian Adventures report. Adam Air gets you there unless it happens to crash, service isn’t really part of their concept. Expressair’s B737-200 was great, nice ancient plane, good service and edible meal. What else can you ask for when paying 38 Euros for a 2h20min flight?

SUB-CGK KI 193 Y 733

I need to break these reports into small parts due to a large number of pictures. Hope they are enjoyable nonetheless.

Hi Lari

Another set of unique and great TR.

UPG looks similar to SUB the terminal structure, boarding stairs, and a new terminal + tower is being constructed on the other side. Any idea when they will finish the construction. I remember it took SUB a while to switch across.

You really need to post the front side picture of the FA on ExpressAir or any FA from Indonesia , that will make your TR beyond perfect  Wink

It must be exciting to fly on Adam air, with all the problems they've had. After you complete the flight its really an accomplishment.

I've always had a desire to see Jakarta, and I will be looking forward to your next trip report dealing with CGK.

Nice patchwork! Any idea how long B737-200's will stay in the air in Indonesia? Heard rumors, that the government will ban "older" jets...

Well, it is reported, that PHUKET's B747-fleet is heavy working... At Least HS-VAC was spotted in Jeddah doing this years Hajj for SAUDI ARABIAN AIRLINES.

VAC is probably operated by Orient Thai on a sub-lease... I don't think Phuket Airlines has any operations since they suspended DMK-UNN (Ranong). That was the last one, since the owner has a casino across the border from Ranong in Burma... Not a great idea if you want to keep your licence in thailand if you ask me. (casinos are illegal in Thailand)

Nice patchwork! Any idea how long B737-200's will stay in the air in Indonesia? Heard rumors, that the government will ban "older" jets...

Don't know exactly, but they're getting rare... Even Merpati is getting 733s.

One funny thing...

Same old 9R with a new name it seems... Interesting to see if they'll start ops.
