I'm a new member and this is my first post....so for whatever it's worth....here goes  Smile

We decided to take the new EK IAH-DXB non-stop flight for a change since we had always traveled LH via the FRA route to get to Chennai (MAA), India.

Date: December 12, 2007
Flight: EK 212

We started our journey in OMA on Continental and checked our bags all the way to MAA since EK was the delivering carrier. When we got to IAH we had to check-in again at the EK counter. While we were in line we were asked by the EK agent if we wanted to take a different flight via LHR to get to DXB 3 hours later since the IAH-DXB Economy class was overbooked. In return we were offered two free return tickets to DXB on EK. We said yes, but didn't qualify since our bags were already checked. We asked the agent if Business Class was full and jokingly volunteered to get "bumped" there. The rep just smiled and checked us into Economy.

We got to our gate D5 and after five minutes was informed of a gate change to D12. Boarding was supposed to start at 17:35 for a departure of 18:35. While standing in line to board, we heard our name paged to check in at the gate desk. We were surprised to hear that we had been upgraded to Business Class to make room in Economy. We saw the agent that checked us in and thanked her for the awesome favor.

So, although late - about 18:30, we excitedly boarded Business Class. The new 777-200LR is beautiful and the Business Class seats are the best I have experienced. Although not quite 180 degrees, the "lie flat" seats are very comfortable and come with tons of adjustments - and my favorite - lumbar and full body massage built into the seat. We had seats 11E and 11F.

The ICE system is excellent with so many choices of audio and video entertainment. Each seat has a 17" widescreen LCD touch screen monitor.

The flight left the gate about 20:05. Afer 15 min of taxi, the announcement was made that there was an error in the cargo loading and a pallete had to be removed - so we had to return to the gate. We also had to refuel to make up for the loss of fuel during taxi. All said and done after a couple more delays, the flight left the gate finally at 21:35 and we were wheels up at 21:56.

An hour after take off we were served dinner which was very good and we settled in to sleep. Like I said before the seats were very comfortable and I slept undisturbed for about 7 hours. I have never sleptso well on a long haul flight. Although the scheduled flight duration was 15 hours 10 min, the actual flight time was 13 hours and 45 min.

Woke up refreshed and watched a couple of movies. We skipped the second meal since we were too full from the previous one.

Touched down in DXB at 21:46 the next day (Dec 13). We weren't very concerned about the delay since our connecting flight to MAA was at 03:00 on the 14th.

On the whole it was a great experience and a pleasant surprise to be upgraded to Business Class. On a negative note, we found on arrival in MAA that one of our bags was lost - and still is as of this writing (Dec 19). I hope our longer return trip in Economy is not too bad....crossing my fingers.

Nice first TR.

You had a really big luck to get upgrade to Business class. Otherwise that loong flight would be a kind of hell.

Cant see the pics, would be nice if you can fix it.

And it would be really nice if you could post the DXB-MAA sector also.

Really pity about your lost bag, hope you will get it soon.

Thank you for sharing

B747forever.

Taylormia:

You have the same problem with the photolinks as I did - I used the "Add Image" key to attach photos from my a.net personal file. I fixed the problem by attaching my pictures to photobucket.com and pasting the URL filepath directly from photobucket.com

Hope it works - looking forward to seeing your pictures.

Nice report, the first IAH-DXB one!

Lucky to get the upgrade, makes the flight more bearable.

- This seems to be an increasing problem, this is at least the 4th TR with this issue lately.

Look forward to the return report and the trip to MAA.

Welcome to A.net! I really like your trip report, and glad you made it, although I cant see your trip report. I hope you can see my trip report about QR 77W First Class from DXB-DOH and compare the seats with EK's business class.

About the bags, I hope you didnt have anything expensive in them, and hope you find them soon!

Thanks for the report! It's always nice to get an upgrade, especially on a loooong flight.

I like that ICE even tells you the registration of the aircraft - that's so cool. I haven't seen that before anywhere, not even on SQ's system on the A380.

What a nice surprise. I've never received such a surprise on any of my flights  Smile

I would love to fly EK sometime. Looks like I have quite a lot of flying to do in the future to try out all these different airlines  Smile Pictures are also great.

I think this is a problem with photobucket rather this website. I have always used www.tinypic.com and it pumps out a URL specific for forums etc. and all you have to do is copy & paste that URL while you're typing up your trip report. Works like a charm and never had problems with photos not showing up.

Thanks a bunch for writing this trip report. Seems like EK made a good choice since the loads were so high on this flight out of IAH. Please do write your return trip as well as I would like to hear about the economy product also on this long flight.

Yeah. It will be difficult to enjoy your flight in Y after you got pampered in J class Big grin

Thanks for posting! I bet it was a really long takeoff roll at IAH! I'm so excited about this new flight into IAH. I still haven't gone down there (from DFW) but I will in January for spotting.

That's incredible luck you had in getting the upgrade.

I'm looking forward to reading about your return journey.

I uploaded the photos initially using the A.net "Add Images" option. The photos don't show up when I do that. I then used photobucket.com and copied the forum friendly links. That works fine.

All I can say is: WOW!

Incredibly lucky. I would give many things important to me to fly on that specific Business class, without mentioning in a brand-new aircraft... you've touched the sky!

Those screens are bigger than the one I have in my room and I can imagine the food... woah!

More pics would have been cool, but the ones you posted are way self explanatory.

Congrats!
