Hello to all.
this is my first trip report and hoping you like it.
comments and recommendations on future trips would be helpful and appreciated.

[purpose of trip was just for fun]

Now i must say this has been one of my worst travel experiences in a while as i travel on a regular basis.

Dec 24-07

I planned a trip to go see some family in Orlando FL, departing with US airways. In the past I've heard nothing good about them but to me this time proved it. It took about 15 minutes drive to the airport and my father dropped me off terminal 2 and i went on and checked in as he parked the car. i got my boarding pas and everything and then me dad came up and helped me checking in my bags. As we were checking in with a US airways agent she asked me how old i was and i told her 15 and then she said I'm sorry one moment please and my dad asked if there was a problem and she said I am to young to fly alone. my first reaction was why did i book with us airways when I am a star member with
united? So she came back and said u cant fly with us and ripped the ticket. After a bit of talking we realized US airways wasn't an option. So we went to united and they said $800 or go downstairs to ticketing and they might help us. As we approached ticketing, Orbitz called me and said US airways cancelled my entire trip including the united returning flights. I was a bit ticked off but we went down and we explained the situation to the woman at the desk and she said "oh my god thats horrible, i ll get you on the first flight to MCO in the morning tomorrow and free of charge. I smiled and thanked her and she asked me if i wanted to use and upgrade with my miles and i replied no thanks i ll use them some other time. After all that i got the refund from Orbitz and a free ticket from united. =]. Life was perfect....until the next day.

Dec 25, 07

I was given a ticket yesterday so check in was a breeze and security took no longer than 20 minutes. By the time i arrived at the gate they were about to board and i asked the woman if there were any windows and she didn't answer my question until she asked me one. she asked if i was willing to give up my seat for a couple attending a funeral and said i ll give you a free ticket for any domestic location and put you on the next flight in 2 hrs. i acknowledged her and she printed me a ticket for the next flight and a free round trip ticket. before i left the gate i asked her if for sure I ll be on the next flight and she said yes of coarse with i big smile on her face. So to waste some time i ate a quick breakfast meal and took some pictures.

So it was almost time after i walked around a bit and had a quick drink at McDonald's. I proceeded to gate b19 and went to the service desk to see what seat i had. He gave me a weird look and said you're not on this flight and i pulled out my ticket that showed i am. After a bit of searching he said i wasn't on this flight even though i am confirmed on it. My first reaction was how is that possible that i have a ticket for this flight but no seat? He said who ever gave this to me was wrong about it and i cannot get this flight so i will be given you a free ticket. I was a little annoyed now because i had to wait another hour and a half. So to kill time i went and sat down at an empty gate and slept for a bit as i was up since about 3 A.M. My phone started vibrating which woke me up and i explained to my cousin in FL i would be a little late in FL. After having a nice conversation, i went to do some more spotting.

Time went by quickly and it was almost time to board so i went to the gate to find out there was an aircraft delay. By now it was 3 P.M. and i was frustrated and tired knowing that i have been in O hare for almost 9 hrs! I walked up to the service desk again and i asked what was my status on this flight. With a humorous attitude, he said we will call u up in a few minutes and let you know because right now there is only 2 seats available and he explained to me that MCO is a over sold route and its a mess so please be patient with us. I was a little ticked by his tone of voice as he wasn't making anything better for not one of the 92 people on stand by or even the ones confirmed like my self. I waited for about 20 minutes to find out there has been a gate change and before i got up he called my name up to the desk. I walked forward and he handed me a ticket and said here you go sir thank you for waiting kindly and i answered " no problem". I was so re- leaved to know that i was going to make it there today and still have a great vacation. The boarding process started form gate B22. This aircraft was an a320 United for TED. So first class and 1k started boarding first then all seating areas. I was one of the first on the a/c and the smell of air fuel went straight through m nose and that was the highlight of my day. Knowing that I am finally on my way. Boarding was very long but i was too happy to care much =]. After 30 or 40 minutes we pushed back.

we taxied for a while and held short of runway 32L. I couldn't take any pics because my camera was almost dead so i saved the last bit of juice on them. During taxi i came across a few International departures: BA 747, KLM 747, AF a330, UA 777, AA 767, and some other regional jets.

Take off was uneventful and so was the rest of the flight. Here are some pics during the flight that i was able to snap.

During the, drinks were served and i was given a free snack box i was given by a f/a because they had to many on board. I slept most of the way and read SOLDIER BOYS and listened to ATC on channel 9, the best thing about UA. {good WW2 book!} A few shows like Simpson s and some trivia were played on the overhead TVs but they did not interest me much. Also 2 movies were on. one was something champ{about boxing} which i liked allot, and Ratatouille which was ok.

We touched down smoothly and taxied for about 5 minutes before arriving at gate 64. I went to baggage claim and met with my cousin and aunt which i was very happy to see after about 4 years. My bags have been sitting there since the first flight of the day when i was originally supposed to leave and they were in a corner with allot of others.

So now i can really start my vacation  Cool

In the 4 days i was there I:

-Slept allot
-Went to the malls
-Went fishing and caught some mighty crab
-Chilled out by the ocean and inter coastal
-enjoyed being with the Family
-and went to an Orlando Magic game with some very good seats
-but the best thing was enjoying the warm weather of the south{Chicago is in its freezing temperatures}

Some pics of the days there and the beauty of Orlando!

I wanted to go through LAX on the return and i ended up going to both SFO and LAX which was great!

My trip was flying by and it was time to go. I woke up about 4 A.M. as my flight leaves at 7:00. I ate a quick meal and got ready to leave. I left the house at about 5:40 and arrived at the desk for UA ticketing at about 6:10. When i got there i heard the Agent yell " Any last passengers going to LAX step up now, cut off is in less than 5 minutes". So we hurried up as it seemed I was the Last person checking in for LAX flight. I was told my seat was re-assigned from a window{32A} to the middle {26B}. I was kind of bummed out about that because i would have liked the window better but no worries. I was pressured for time as boarding started already. I was allowed to cut people in line by security so it was a breeze. I went through it no problems and ran to catch the next tram to the terminal which came as soon as i got there. It was about 1 or 2 minutes before i reached the gate where I realized i was one of the last to board. Time was 6:50 and I was barely making it. I had no time for any pics so i am sorry that none were put up. I rushed into the plane and found my seat.

As we pushed back there was a pause for about 3 or 4 minutes before resuming our engine start and we taxied for about 7 or 8 minutes behind a US airways 737.

About 5 hours past by, with turbulence almost all the way from MCO-LAX. We were offered one last drink and then we were on approach for runway 24L. Our approach was a simultaneous approach with a Southwest 737 going for 24R.There was a small girl on the plane that was maybe 4 or 5 started screaming very loud and people were getting very annoyed because she was screaming for no reason and the parents weren't doing anything to control her. All the way 2 the terminal the young one was yelling very loud. But anyway, touchdown was very hard and one of the overhead bins up in front popped open and shortly the captain made an apology for the hard landing. Reverse thrust was used and spoilers were up, they remained up for about 3 or 4 minutes of our 10 minute taxi to gate 68.

So i got off the plane and said....now i have 7 hours to waste until my next flight. So i ate at a tasty Latino restaurant and watched a few planes coming in and out from the window in the food court of UA terminal. I walked to the delta gates and thats mostly the farthest i could find my way to. I wanted to go to the other Gates like AA, and the international terminal but i couldn't find my way out of the UA gates unless i left the gate area but then i would have to go through security lines again. The airport was very busy to my surprise, i thought it wouldn't be as busy because its a Sunday but i was wrong. I made a phone call or two and i took some pics.

Sorry for the quality. =|

The flight was smooth pretty much all the way to SFO. We were told that they didn't have any beverages on board because this flight was in from Denver and they didn't stock up on enough snacks and drinks and they didn't have much time at LAX so we wouldn't be getting a drink service. I was fine with it anyway because the atc put me to sleep most of the way there until i caught the descent for approach.

All the way down to about 100ft above the runway, i thought we were going to land on water.....the water just kept on coming closer and closer until we were about 100ft above the runway came out. Landing was very hard and probably one of the hardest landings i have ever experienced. =|

we held short for a while before getting a spot at the gate. by the time we parked it was dark and we landed when the sun was still up!

After leaving the plane, i went to grab a quick bite as i only had about 30 minutes to my next flight with boarding in about 20. The man said about 10 minutes and i started getting nervous as time was getting closer. When he gave me my order it was time to board so i quickly gobbled it down at the gate while they were boarding. Thankfully i was seating area 3, the last to board. After quickly chewing my sandwich up, i was last in line to board at about 5:55. I found my seat and figured out that the whole row was to me! Boarding was a little bit long and a bit of a mess as people were sitting in the wrong seats and F/A were getting mad.

Taxi was about 5 minutes then we held short for a departing UA 767. We then taxied into position on the runway and engines spooled up. The take off role was very hard as you could feel the captain fighting to keep the plane centered on the runway. We lifted of and got some very hard turbulence pushing the plane side to side on steep banks. Sorry i didnt take much pictures because i was to distracted by the take off. Then shortley a snack and drink was served with a movie playing. Then announcements were given and they informed us that the tape was bad so we would be watching Ratatouille. I already seen the movie so i simpley slept after taking this pic.

The 1 of two snacks given on the flight.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z320/noor_13/ord-mco-lax-sfo-ord131.jpg

I slept all the way until about 3 minutes before landing. Touchdown was smooth and we taxied for a short time. We were told to park at gate C19 but then shortly the captain made a announcement saying that we would be towed to a different gate. It took about 10 minutes and he said that even with the 15 minute delay we were still on time.

I left the plane and walked to baggage claim. ORD was like a ghost town at this time of morning. I found my bags and left ORD with my dad.

I HOPE YOU LIKED THE REPORT AND HOPEFULLY I WILL PUT UP SOME NEW ONES SOON.
AND ONCE AGAIN THIS IS MY FIRST....SO COMMENTS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

THANKS MUCH FOR READING

Question, if AA777 is your favorite and your screen name is BA777pilot shouldn't you fly on one world?

They do, just out of IAD. EMB-120's are out of SFO and LAX, Dash-8 out of DEN, and no turboprops out of ORD.

Interesting that UA was willing to route you MCO-LAX-SFO-ORD on the return? Just out of curiosity, how'd you swing that one? Would be one heck of a mileage run there...about 3800 extra miles or so compared to the non-stop.

And two free tickets? I'd say that made the ordeal on the outbound worth it.

By the way, the US agent that cancelled your ticket was wrong. According to US Airways' site on unaccompanied minors, "Children 15-17 may travel unaccompanied on non-stop and connecting flights without US Airways assistance." Since you said you were 15, the agent was clearly in the wrong on this one. I'd recommend an e-mail to the US Airways Executive Office detailing the situation - you'll probably get some vouchers for future US Airways flights. Doesn't hurt at all - you definitely deserve some compensation for this.

Actually, 15 is the grey area. I have had parents before that had their kids traveling non-stop and one was 15 and she still wanted to pay for the UM fee. Maybe if they would have explained it to the agent, then there would have been no problem. Sometimes Delt, there is more to it than just "the agent was in the wrong."

Ok, here is my rant for a second...I love it how everyone on here and that other "site" tell everyone that had something happen to them on a US flight, to write to the Executive Office. Don't you folks think our Executive's have better things to do like turning around PHL, trying to get the east and west pilots to talk, improving service, etc., than dealing with something that our Customer Relations department can most certainly handle? Give them a break folks!! So the next time I have the smallest slip up with DL or any of the other carriers, and I write it on here, will I be directed to write to the Executive Offices, or to the Customer Relations department?

I am NOT in any way defending the agents actions at all, however, before anyone chants "Write to the Executive Office's" try writing to Customer Relations first.

How do you know he will get vouchers for future travel? Yes I do agree that compensation would be the better, however is it really worth a free round-trip ticket anywhere in the U.S.? I would have to disagree, at the most, I believe that he will get a $200-off voucher

I planned a trip to go see some family in Orlando FL, departing with US airways.

If your routing was ORD-MCO from the start, you were never booked on US Airways in the first place, unless you were making a connection through PIT, PHL or CLT. So which was it? Makes me think it was a US Codeshare booked through orbitz but actually on UA metal which actually was TED.

Quoting Ba777pilot (Thread starter):
As we were checking in with a US airways agent she asked me how old i was and i told her 15

Yet your profile says 16-20, how old are you?

Quoting Ba777pilot (Thread starter):
After a bit of talking we realized US airways wasn't an option.

Well, don't think it ever WAS from the start....

Your TR is good, and nice pictures but from the start it doesn't make sense at all. As I explained US Airways does not even serve ORD-MCO non stop, so unless you failed to mention you were due to make a connection somewhere, I have to assume this was a codeshare trip on UA metal booked through US Airways at Orbitz. So you should have checked in at UA from the start.

So if you don't mind can you explain a bit about the beginging of the trip?

Alex

There's nothing really grey about it. It says that if you are 15, you can travel unaccompanied without a problem. There is the prevision that if they want to pay for the UM package, they are free to hand the money over to US. If they don't though, they are not required to (as would be the case with a 5-14 year old).

The e-mail wouldn't be read by any of the Execs - they have a trained staff there that deals with customer complaints (they probably just send it down to the customer relations department). And yes, when there is a slip up when I feel the airline is in the wrong, I'll send in a complaint alerting them to the situation. I'll do the opposite as well when I've received great service - I'll send those same folks a compliment letter. Good and bad service need to be recognized and handled appropriately.

I can't guarentee it, but based on my past interactions with US Airways, I've gotten several $75-100 vouchers for problems in the past, and if you read FlyerTalk, the consensus there is that they are relatively liberal in sending out vouchers. Granted, from what I've heard, the vouchers are a bit difficult to use (have to go to an airport IIRC; I used mine at GSO...) and can't be used online, but still - it's better than nothing. $150-200 voucher does sound right though for what compensation would probably be given - which is still a decent bit - from ORD, you could probably get a pretty wide selection of flights from there for paying no more than an extra $50 on top of a $150 voucher.

Wow, I would be really p**sed if I was told I couldn't fly alone. The US agent was wrong. Here's their policy:

http://www.usairways.com/awa/content...cialneeds/unaccompaniedminors.aspx

You're allowed to travel alone when you're 15 with US, along with UA (from 12+), DL, CO, and any other major US Carrier I can think of.

Unfortunately, the former America West US agents at ORD aren't exactly the best in the system..

See it is unclear weither he was on a conx or not. Since Atrud777 is infact pointing out that there are no non stops ORD-MCO unless it is UA.

It also is a grey area because alot of parents want to pay for the service if their child is 15...We don't deny them giving us the money, because, frankley, alot of parents have an ease of mind knowing that their child will be taken care of.

But also remember, in his post he says he is 15, but his profile says he is 16 so which is true? Also was it a non-stop or conx?

Quoting UN_B732 (Reply 18):

The rules are very very different from carrier to carrier. For example CO and UA allow UM's with a conx as long as it is not the last flight's of the night. US does not, nor I believe does DL. I know that CO prefers that if they are 15 to pay the UM fee. At least that is what I know from past pax experiences and from the airport I work in.

Allow me to copy and paste directly from US Airways' website:

* Children under 5 may not travel without parent or legal guardian.
* Children 5-14 may travel unaccompanied on non-stop flights for an additional $50 fee each way. US Airways assistance is required.
* Children 15-17 may travel unaccompanied on non-stop and connecting flights without US Airways assistance.
* Children 15-17 who require US Airways assistance may travel unaccompanied on non-stop flights only. There is an additional $50 fee each way. Uniformed employees provide assistance for children traveling alone from the point of departure to their final destination. Personnel are not qualified to provide certain types of medical assistance, and are not permitted to administer or dispense medication. Please take these points into consideration if the child requires specialized care.
* If an unaccompanied minor is traveling on a flight operated by one of our Star Alliance or codeshare partners, you must contact the carrier directly for their policies on unaccompanied minors.

The OP is 15 years old. Thus, bullet points 3 and 4 apply to him.

Bullet point three says that a 15 year old may travel BY THEMSELVES on a US Airways itinerary on either a nonstop OR a connection.

Bullet point four says that if the parent wants the child to travel as an UM, it can only be on a non-stop.

Now, the OP doesn't say if his parents had bought the UM service. If they had not, then the OP is fine because of the fact that US doesn't require him to purchase it. If this is indeed the case, the OP has a very legitimate complaint, as the fact of him being 15 or 16 is illegitimate, nor is the fact of a non-stop vs. a connection. If the OP's parents had not purchased the UM package, then US canceling the ticket on the grounds of too young to travel is not legitimate.

I would have used the service for minors if she would have given it to me. Instead she said we cant take him because I'm connecting in PHL.

How about we just make an honest conclusion that the agent jumped to conclusions before knowing all the facts. It was an honest mistake.

Agents assume that a 15 year old checking in with their parent, is going to be buying the service.
