So after spending a week in CVG for training, I decided to reward myself and go see a friend ( Wink) for the night and fly back the next day.

Let me start out by saying that CVG ain't what it used to be. Two years ago, CVG was so busy that the A concourse only had room for four actual gates (two boarding doors) for ASA and the rest of the gates were mainline. All of terminal 3 was strictly Delta and the connection carriers. Now the A concourse has not only connection flights out of the A concourse, along with empty gates, NW and Continental use the A concourse as well. It truly is a shame at how much Delta cut CVG back. I was talking with a gentleman who works the gates in CVG and he was telling me that they used to have upwards of 200 flights a day (mainline) out of CVG. Now it is down to 52. I believe that number to be mainly accurate because B27 and B28 were not used once the whole time we were there.

Now just a quick heads up, all of my pics were taken by a cell phone. So please bear with the quality of the pictures.

Here are a few shots of how empty the terminal looks at CVG (all taken in the B concourse):

and even further down..again sorry for poor quality

what hub do you know that keeps a gate for more than 4 hours with no flights in and out of it?

Last one on CVG for the moment. I promise!

Ida's Seat....i never saw this place open the entire week.

-----------------------------------

I did end up having to fly to DTW and renting a car down.

DL5296
Friday, November 9th
Scheduled (actual) departure: 13:20 (13:17)
Scheduled (actual) arrival: 14:35 (14:37)
Equipment: CR2
Load: 16/50

The sole picture that I bothered to take was out the window of the Avis bus:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b343/golferww/010.jpg

Look at the cute little DC-9  Wink

Nothing much to comment on. It is a 44 minute flight from CVG-DTW. The flight attendant was very nice and she walked thru the cabin with a tray of snacks and got our drink orders.

One thing that kind of bothers me is the quality of the cabin on the inside. I absolutely love the seat coverings on ASA, they always look nice and fresh. On OH, its been the same style seating (old, drab look to the cabin) and the seats look very well used.

------------------------------------------

So after visiting my friend danielle for the just under 24 hours that I was in Toledo, it was time to head back to DAB.

After I dropped my one way rental car off at the Avis desk, I headed over to the Delta Connection check in desk. I used the kiosk to check myself in and check my bag through to Daytona. This would come back to haunt me for checking the bag. But more on that later.

DL6295
Friday, November 10th
Scheduled (actual) departure: 14:50 (14:40)
Scheduled (actual) arrival: 15:52 (15:37)
Equipment: ER3
Load: 16/37
Seat: 1A

I will start by ranting about the TSA. I know I am beating a very dead horse when I say this, but TSA really needs to talk to other stations. I went thru DAB, ATL, CVG (twice) and they did not take my toothpaste when it was full. I was leaving today from TOL and they took my toothpaste and not only was it pretty much empty, but it was right at 3.5 ounces. But as I said, no beating a dead horse.

I walk down to the gate and saw my favorite TOL OH employee from the afternoon shift working the gate. We chatted for a second and then it was on up to the plane to take my seat. I love the ERJs for one simple reason. Even though the cabin is tinier than the CR1/2 the seats seem to have more room. Plus you can actually look out the windows on the ERJ.

Love the room of 1A especially for me and my ridiculous height. I think what gets me is the various bases these crews come from. The last time i was on a Chautauqua plane, the Captain was Indianapolis based, the F/O was Dayton based and the flight attendant was Columbus based. I think this crew was just Dayton and Columbus based, but its still funny to see them spread apart like that.

I snapped a few pics of this flight so here goes:

Overall flight experience...not bad. The flight attendant was nice and the crew kept us informed as much as they could on a 31 minute flight.

DL305
Saturday, November 10th
Scheduled (actual) departure: 16:35 (16:42)
Scheduled (actual) arrival: 17:12 (17:08)
Equipment: Boeing 757-200
Yield: F: 100% Y:90% (estimated)
Seat: 19F

I was the first off the aircraft and first into the terminal and into Chautauqua Land or more commonly referred to as Concourse A of the CVG airport. I only had 35 minutes or so to connect and I was hungry as hell. But, I wanted to make sure I was the first to board considering I still had a carry on and I was sitting in a "bulkhead" seat which meant my carry-on would be going in the overhead. Nice thing about the "bulkhead" rows, DL considers those folks and that they have to have a little extra time, so they put those folks in right along with Zone 1. That being said, I had to bypass Panda Express  cry   cry  and venture onto Concourse B.

I made my way up the escalator and on down to B20 where the wait began. One thing that cracks me up about CVG is that no matter how many agents they have working the flight, they barely get the flight out on time. This flight had 5 agents working the flight and we still got it out a hair late.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b343/golferww/027.jpg
Awaiting boarding

Pretty soon after I arrived at the gate, I heard the nice GIDS lady say, "We would like to invite those passengers on, Delta flight 305, in Zone 1 to board at this time". For those unfamiliar with the term GIDS, is simply stands for Gate Information Display System. It displays flight information, stand-by information for both upgrades, confirmed stand-bys, as well as non-rev stand-bys. It also usually has audio attached that provides the necessary announcements as well as tells what zone is boarding.

I smiled, handed my boarding card to the agent and said "yes". As per protocol, the agent who is scanning boarding passes is required to ask if that passenger is willing and able to assist in an emergency. 19F is one of those coveted emergency row seats. The agent looked at me funny when I said yes and nothing else, until the machine beeped the magical beep it does when it recognizes an E-row seat. He laughed and said have a nice flight.

I made my way down the jetway, called the necessary people to let them know I was boarding and that I would talk to them in an hour or so. I settled down into my seat just in time to see my bag that I checked to DAB being loaded in CVG. So I quickly got my phone out again and snapped a pic of the bag being loaded.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b343/golferww/029.jpg
My bag being loaded...sun in my eyes and everything lol

I love this seat mainly due to the leg room:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b343/golferww/034.jpg

I grabbed a quick engine/wing shot before we pushed.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b343/golferww/030.jpg

The captain was very informative explaining the routing which would be LEX, CHA, Rome, GA and then into the ATL airport. Total flying time would be 56 minutes take off to touch down and that he apologized about the late push out of CVG and that we would make up time in route.

I grabbed a quick shot of us taxiing:
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b343/golferww/031.jpg

We took off 18C and made a slight right turn and proceeded on course that the captain prescribed to us prior to the push. The flight attendants immediately got up after the 10,000 foot customary off/on/off/on flick of the no smoking sign. It was an absolutely gorgeous day and I snapped a few pictures:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b343/golferww/035.jpg

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b343/golferww/039.jpg

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b343/golferww/040.jpg

When the drink cart came around, I chose my customary Sprite and cheese crackers. The flight attendants were awesome and about what I expect out of the New Delta.

Pretty soon it was time for the decent into the Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. I grabbed one last shot before landing:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b343/golferww/041.jpg

Touchdown was smooth and in about 5 minutes we were at our gate in the B concourse. Atlanta was no more a zoo than usual but the nice thing was my gate was literally right next door. My CVG flight parked at B6 and my flight to DAB was out of B8. No chance they can mess up getting my bag to my DAB flight, is there???

DL1617
Saturday, November 10th
Scheduled (actual) departure: 1910 (1908)
Scheduled (actual) arrival: 2022 (2012)
Equipment: MD-88
Yield: F: 100% Y:60% (estimated)
Seat: 11D

Since it was night time by the time our flight pushed I only have a few more pictures for you, but the nice thing was that I was working early in the morning the next morning so I was able to get this shot for you from the ramp side in DAB:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b343/golferww/086.jpg

But back to that night, we had only one gate agent which kind of cracked me up. I know ATL is a mess, why must only one agent work a flight by themselves? I mean its crazy lol. But I grabbed a few shots of people milling about...

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b343/golferww/043.jpg

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b343/golferww/045.jpg

The reason why I chose 11D on this flight was so that I was one of the first people off so I could help my fellow coworker who was working by herself. The flight was great, smooth as silk. I did sit next to a very nice lady who started in DUB that morning and unfortunately had to take a bag claim for her once I started working (on my day off no less).

I grabbed a quick shot of my knee intimately familiar with the seat in front of me:

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b343/golferww/046.jpg

I make it off the plane and my supervisor, who I love dearly, told me that my bag didn't make it. I laughed and I kind of figured because I told her I watched it go on the flight in CVG and that my gate was right next door to the DAB flight, so there wasn't a chance my bag was going to make it.

Overall, I am sincerely impressed with how Delta has turned it around and how we are making ourselves a great airline. Every one was professional, every one I came in contact with held up to my standards of how I think a DL employee should be.

Any comments would be appreciated!  Smile

I try to have some fun when I am a board. I love chatting with the crew in the back galley of larger aircraft, it makes the trip go faster.

Thanks for readin!

If no mergers happen...we should be building CVG back up. However, I have a feeling that if a merger takes place we will probably lose CVG as a hub.

Excellent report! Very sad to see concourse B so empty. I remember the time I was there for a four hour connection back in 2003. Every gate area was filled with people, and all the shops and restaurants had people in them. I felt a lot like being in US's concourses at CLT, or CO's at EWR. These days, if you want to see activity like that, you have to visit the madhouse called concourse C, home of the OH operations.

Nice report and photo's, thanks

Whilst it is sad to see CVG so empty, why was it a DL hb in the first place? It seems too close to ATL to make sense - at leat to me Smile

I really couldn't answer that, but the same question could be asked for PHX/LAS and PIT/PHL/CLT for US, CLE and EWR for CO and DTW/MEM/MSP for NW.

Who wants to go there?  Wink LOL while I joke, during the afternoon you will see gates fill up. It is empty as can be until around 2p or so and then you have it fill up.

Its sad to see CVG so quiet, I connected through CVG with DL, AMS-MCO back in 2005 (I don't recall which concourse I used) and I enjoyed the experience - certainly when compared to connecting through ATL on the way home!

agreed. It would be nice if OH could move some ops over to B. Granted it'd be CRJ's, but B is so much more spacious than C. In fact I'd like to see C razed and all DL/DL Connex ops switched to B and A. Would be a shame though if the merger does go thru and CVG is downsized to a spoke. Hopefully maybe Airtran or JetBlue could open a hub there to take over the space.
