Ok, so back in December, I decided to visit Embry-Riddle Prescott, AZ to meet with the admissions counseler and to see one of my friends who goes there. As a Junior in High School, I wanted to get started on the college visiting early so it wouldn't occupy the first 1/2 of my senior year. I flew from Boston to Phoenix on US Airways then took a shuttle up to prescott.

And now for the Trip report

January 18th, 2008
US Airways 1161
Airbus A320 N211US
Departure Time: 0625
Actual: 0625
Arrival Time: 1011
Actual: 1029
Seat 8A

I got to the airport around 4:20AM after an hour drive. Check-in took only a minute, as I had no bags to check. I asked the agent if there were any exit or bulkhead seats avalible, but she rudely told me to check at the gate. Well, I guess that rudeness is typical US's BOS check-in staff. I got through security quickly, and made my way over to B11, and with about 1hr until boarding, I went spotting around the terminal.
US 757 in the star alliance livery.

Spirit Airlines A319

After spotting, boarding was about to begin, so I waiting until Zone 5 was called, and walked down the jetway into the dreary cabin of this A320, the HP interiors look better IMHO, however the US A320 was more comfterble. I took seat 8A, got out my laptop and power adaptor(glad US still has these) and waited for the other passengers to board. Around 6:20 the door was shut, and we pushed back right on time. Our takeoff runway would be 15R(never used this runway before), and lifted off around the 7000ft marker. Climbout seemed sluggish for this A320, I've had better climbs on a NW A320 out of TUS before(in the scorching hot summer even). Once we reached 10000ft, out comes the computer, and the Bose headphones, I began working on my school project on Air Traffic Control, which occupied most of the flight. In-flight service consisted of two beverage services and the BOB service(already got breakfast at the airport, so I wasn't hungry). One thing which bugs me about US is they had the F/As and pilots do credit card announcements/ads. This is really cheap IMHO. I don't mind the tray table ads, but having F/As and pilots act as salesmen is pathetic. Also, playing the Dividend Miles mall/vacations ad over the loudspeaker when people are trying to sleep is intrusive and annoying.

Cabin Shot from my seat.

In-flight service:

After a few more hours in-flight, we began our descent into Phoenix. We landed on time on runway 8.

We parked at gate A13 next to a former America West A319.

Due to getting held up taxiing in, I missed my shuttle to Prescott, well, no tour for me. The good news was I had time to get lunch(was getting a big hungry), and to do a bit of spotting.
4/6 of Mesa's PHX Dash-8 fleet.

Flight 1161, points out of 20
Check-in: 10(agent was rude)
On-Time: 18(delay was not in US's control)
Comfort/Amenities/IFE: 16(power port brought the score up, seats were good)
In-Flight service: 16(one more beverage service would be nice)
Cabin Crew: 15(were nice, but wern't going above an beyond)
Total: 75/100=75%

At 11:20, I boarded my shuttle up to Prescott, and after 2.5hrs of sitting, I finally arrived at the Embry-Riddle Admissions building, 1hr late. Even though I was late, I got to take the flight line tour, which was awesome. Riddle had recently upgraded all their cessna 172s to G1000 glass cockpit systems. When I went to their summer flight expo(05 and 06), they had the older cessna's with GPS and TCAS, no G1000.

After the flight line tour, I met with the admissions counsler(went quite well), and the got an offer to take an observer flight, which I happily accepted. Back to the flight line I went and about 15 minutes later, I stepped in the back seat of the Cessna 172(not sure which one, sorry). The flight I was observing was an instrument flight lesson, it took about 1.5hrs.

After the observer flight, I went back to campus, and met up with my friend from flight expo, who currently attends riddle. We hung out for a while, and went to the movies with some of his friends. Note: Cloverfield is the worst movie ever made, don't see it. After the movie, we went back to campus and hung out in the dorm. I went to bed around 1AM MST(3AM EST), after staying up for 24hrs straight(woke up the previous day at 3AM to get to the airport). The next morning, my friend drove me to Phoenix(he lives in Chandler, so it was on the way), and dropped me off around 12:45PM. I tried checking in at the Kiosk, but it wouldn't let me, so I asked the agent who directed me to the "full service check-in line". The agent there was very nice, and a minute later, I had my boarding pass in hand.
More pictures..

I was supposed to be on flight 222 leaving Phoenix at 11:10PM, but I decided to "move up" (as US calls it) to flight 1162 leaving Phoenix at 4:10PM. I luckily got the last window seat on the flight as the rest were middle seats. I had lunch in the food court, the went through security which only took a few minutes. I still had an hour before boarding, so I did some spotting.

Departure Time: 4:10PM
Actual: 4:10PM
Arrival Time: 10:44PM
Actual: 10:34PM
Seat 24A

Once Zone 2 was called, I made my way to the back of the bus, and got out my laptop and power adaptor. I had the middle seat free for about 15 minutes, until somone got moved to it(the pax was seated next to two crying babies). Push back was on time and we taxxied out to 25R and rotated about at about 7500ft. In-flight service consisted of the BOB service, one beverage service and a water service. It took forever for the F/A's to reach my row.

In-flight service.
About 3.5hrs later we began our descent into Boston. We landed on runway 27 and taxiied into gate B21 next to an A319 N754UW.

I was able to get a flight deck shot on my way out.

I walked down to baggage claim, which was a fiasco as a few other flights had arrived at the same time. My bag was one of the first off of the plane. Around 10:45, my parents arrived, and I got home at 11:30.

Flight 1162, points out of 20
Check-in/Baggage: 17(bad first agent, but bag was one of the first off the plane)
On-Time: 20(early into Boston)
Comfort/Amenities/IFE: 18(power port brought the score up, seats were good)
In-Flight service: 16
Cabin Crew: 17(were nice, but wern't going above an beyond)
Total: 88/100=88%

Combined 1161 and 1162
163/200=82%

Excellent trip report! I really enjoyed reading about the campus as I also will be visiting there this summer( trying to visit all of the colleges on my list before senior year) What was your overall impression of the campus? I also saw cloverfield on Friday but I thought it was a good movie until the end.

Great Report dude!

Is there a vast difference between the US 757 and A321 in coach?

Service I assume would be the same.

Picures were great, loved the sunset pics also.

I really liked ERAU, however, there is not much to do on friday nights. They are on year 5 of their 10 year renovation plan(new buildings, aircraft etc). The dining hall, however closes at 7PM which is annoying. There are a few 24hr fast food places in the area and lots of supermarkets/stores(wal-mart, etc). Have you considered doing their summer flight expo? It gives you an intro to flying and to the campus. When I did it it was awesome.

I wasn't in either, I was in the A320. The seats were about the same(comfort wise) as the A321, they have pretty good padding, but the seat back was sorta hard. I havn't been in a US 757 yet.

Interesting? Since when have US East metal been doing the BOS run?

When I flew it in Dec '06, it was US West.

I dunno. They are currently operating flight 1161/1162 with A320s. The rest are West metal.

Thats actually an A319 and its the HP heratige logo jet. Its not really a half assed logo paint over. Its just like their HP OC A319, Alleghenney A319, Piedmont A319, PSA A319, etc. Thats they way its supposed to look.

Well, actually you landed on 26  wink . The US hanger is on the NE side of the field, south of the north runway.

There are 2 west metal flights (10AM and 11PM from PHX) and one east (4PM from PHX) daily. It's been that way for a while now, probably close to a year IIRC.

They have a program at daytona which gets you up to a solo. I reccomend the flight expo at Prescott to get an intro to flying and if its really what you want to do. Its better than going to a local flight school and taking one there. At ERAU, you get to go to classes, use the sim lab, etc. It was really fun. http://www.erau.edu/pr/events/summer/flightexpo.html
The cost is 500 higher than when I did it(2000 as opposed to 1500), but it was well worth it, it includes all meas, lodging, etc. I'm visiting the Daytona campus in a month and University of North Dakota in 3 weeks(also has a very good flight program, the 2nd best in the country), i'll write a t/r on it. ASU's program is affiliated with Mesa Airlines(the worst regional out there) and you have to apply for it(no guarentees getting in). I'm not sure on Perdue's though.

Hey COERJ145,

Nice TR. Riddle-PRC is replacing its Seminoles with Twin Diamond Stars this fall, so all glass cockpit training.

Prescott is very similar to Grand Forks, in the middle of nowhere which means you will have more time to study and get drunk. Big grin  Big grin  Big grin .

That's probably why they are to two best flight programs in the country.

What is it? It's A 747-400, but that's not important right now.

You did a great job presenting this photo trip report. It's always good to set your goals ahead of time, and then remember to study hard to meet those goals. I was going to ask whether this school requires SATs, but wasn't sure if it would be a dumb question. It seems the school is focused just on aviation.

I enjoyed PHX and once when I got off my flight from YYC, a great CSA helped me to upgrade to LAS, but I lucked out on the LAS-FLL flight. Too full! So sad! I had a night flight too on a 757 and a crick in the neck in the morning, waking up in FLL.

Keep up the good work on these trip reports. The photos were sensational!
