Reason for trip:
Basically with another year’s of hard work almost behind me, its time again for me to embark on my X’mas and New Year’s holiday to the USA. This time it will be another ultra long haul run on TG’s LA Express in Royal Silk Class. I will split this TR to 2 parts with the outbound and inbound legs separate.

Jakarta (CGK) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL)

Class: Golden Club (Business)
Cruise: 32000 feet
Just spent most of my day after I woke up just relaxing and doing some last minute packing like charging all my electronics and stuff like that. By the time we got to the airport, the airport was really busy as a lot of people are also leaving for their year’s end holiday. Usually in the mid-afternoon, the airport is dead quiet. Check in was quick and then we proceeded to clear immigration and head towards the lounge.

The usual lounge used by MH and SQ is the Puri Indah lounge,
but this instance, we decided to use the Esplanade lounge and it was the right decision made as it was not too busy and they just finished a really nice renovation to this lounge.
I hope the flight today is on time as I have barely a 2 hour connection time for my flight to Bangkok in Kuala Lumpur.
As suspected, it’s a 100% full flight today on this B734, I really hope MH change their short haul fleet soon as most of their B734 are around 15 years old now. I hope they get the A320 as I somehow prefer the A320 to the B737 family due to the slightly more spacious cabin. It would be great if they fit it out like Virgin America’s A320 fleet.

Due to the peak travel season, I wished that MH would have changed this flight to the A333. But nothing can ever beat the great welcome you get once you enter a MH flight, and this flight was no different. Soon after pushback we were off in the air.
Storm clouds were everywhere, but the pilots really did their best and always somehow manage to avoid them.
The remainder of the flight was uneventful and time was spent reading the day’s papers. Before long we touched down in Kuala Lumpur 10 mins early and ending another great MH flight.
After landing from my Jakarta flight, we cleared immigration and customs at Kuala Lumpur before picking our bags up and checking in again for our TG flight to Bangkok. Looking at the number of people waiting to check in, we could tell that its another full load to Bangkok. The agent at the Royal Silk check in was painfully slow today, took me almost 20 mins to check in and that’s with only 1 person in front of me.
After all formalities were done, we proceeded to the temporary lounge that is being used by TG. This temporary lounge is actually better than the actually TG lounge itself, thank god they decided to renovate it.
After relaxing for around 20 mins, we went to the gate and to my absolute joy, its HS-TJS, one of TG’s newest B772ER.
Barely a year old and with the updated J seats which I wanted to check out, and another milestone is that with this flight, I have truly completed flying on the entire TG long haul fleet (have not flown TG’s B734 and ATR 72 as I seldom fly domestic route in Thailand)
Once coming aboard the B772ER, I noticed that the new J seats is significantly bigger in size than the current lie-flats on the A340, B777 and B744. After settling my big butt in the new seat, it is indeed better in every aspect than the older ones. Wider, more support, and most importantly, a much bigger PTV. AVOD system is still the same though (what AVOD system does TG use anyway?) If there is only one problem with the newer seat is that the footrest is a little bit annoying in that your feet has to be on them to hold them down from folding up again.

After experiencing the new seat is that my flight the next day to LAX will be on the older lie-flat, what a bummer huh! On this flight, TG had a better than average crew on board your usual regional flight and were actually helpful and polite, and another plus, the in flight catering today was really good.
In a new aircraft, you must of course visit the lav!

Had to use the stairs again, but no complains as I love taking shots of the great RR Trent engines!
After landing in Bangkok, we took our bags and took the airport limo to the Holiday Inn Bangkok where we will be spending a night.

This hotel just had a recent makeover in and out and the rooms are now really nice and modern. The plus point of this hotel is the relatively attractive rates and also its great location in Ploenchit.
After a nice overnight stay in Bangkok, we spent the rest of our day shopping at Siam Paragon and Central Chidlom. Left the hotel for the airport at around 4pm.

After the quick check in and immigration clearance, we spent the rest of our time just walking around the duty free and Royal Silk Lounge.

And of course, got the free foot massage at the Royal Orchid Spa.
Bangkok airport is usually busy, but this time even more so as its almost X’mas vacation time. Soon enough we went to the gate and entered the aircraft, settling in my seats, I really appreciate the newer lie flats on the B772ER.
1st Generation TG lie flats
After push back, there was a long hold, around 30 mins, most probably waiting for departure clearance from US customs! The take off itself was extremely long (due to real heavy fuel load)

Once after take off, there was this annoying high pitched sound coming out form the engine (as my seat was right next to it), thank god I had my Bose noice cancelling headsets to really drum out that noise. Funny enough when I got up to walk around the cabin, the sound is not audible once you are either 1 row in front or behind me. This was my first time on HS-TLB. I have now been on TLA, TLB and TLC, I guess only TLD has been avoiding my custom
Amenities, Menu and Meals
My AVOD starting acting up during meal service and it took almost 1 hour of resetting to fix the problem. I managed to catch ‘Invasion’ on the AVOD and after that its just lights out for me all the way to Los Angeles.

Recently TG have 1 A345 to heavy MX check so they use A340-600 on some days (return via Osaka/KIX) to LAX, 8 lucky pax get first class seat by holding Business Class tkt, and I guess EY+ tkt holder also get some J seats everyone is a winner

For TG, they have three cabin classes - Business (Royal Silk), Premium Economy and Economy Class on its Airbus A340-500s, which will be used on BKK to LAX or JFK.

Once again, the third serving is not served properly on this flight... TG F/As once again just choose to serve the last meal on their own discretion (but catering loads a pizza for everyone). That is my problem with TG.

Those new lie flats in the 777 200ER looks absolutely fabulous
Will have to try to get a flight on it in April when I am in Thailand for Songkran and RR Did not get it on my BKK-KUL-BKK so I am going to try harder this time around. Will be flying 10 domestic flights while I am there, so with any luck on the BKK-HKT-BKK leg I might get their new 200ER...

Hi Roni! You are right on that! aesthetically I also prefer the A345, pity about the seats though! But on the ultra long haul route like LAX to BKK, the plane is sooo heavy that it only lifts off almost at the end of the runway and that actually scares some people heehhehe

HI Sam, thanks for reading! Actually I also know about the A346 and I was trying to get on that flight so I can get the F seats as I am holding C tickets plus Royal Orchid Gold, so definitely I will be on the F...but sadly, the A346 was not operating on the schedule which I had to fly from. Oh well, I am coming back from MUC in F on the A346 in April so not too bad I guess, the only sad part...I actually have to pay the F fare

You are absolutely correct in there...the 3rd and final meal is always served haphazardly and usually they taste pretty bad, as for me, I usually skip it altogether, and with my own observations, so do most passengers in J.

Hi Ag92, I actually always avoid all my TG travels on tha A300-600, its just that their products on board these birds are sooo dated and not worth the money I am paying in J. So usually if I need to go on route that TG usues the A300-600, I usually fly on MH instead, as most of their regional routes are done by the A333 (which is going thru a reasonable enhancement program) or the B772ER

Hi Stein! Actually the best bet is to get to BKK on the TG418 which leaves KUL at around 9pm. They use the B772ER pretty often on this times now. And if you are coming back from BKK to KUL, try the flight which leaves around 11am becasue as luck might have it, you might even get the A346 like me on my return trip to KL that you will see in part 2!

Actually all TG's B777 (Even non ER) have alraedy been upgraded in J to the new lie flats, but the ER's have the 2nd generation of these lie flats, but please be aware, out of the B773 they have, only 1 has since been converted to the new interior.
Actually since it just finished a complete make over, its been great, just used it yesterday again, and SQ now also uses this lounge, so I guess that tells a lot on its own huh ....actually they changed the name to just JAS Premium Lounge and the Esplanade name moved over to the lounge across the corrider, but I guess its owned by the same owner.
