DTW-CDG In WBC W/ Pics (by Dtwclipper Jan 31 2008 in Trip Reports)

We arrived for our four days in Vienna and checked into the Radisson Palais hotel. We were very pleasantly surprised to find that we had been upgraded to a duplex suite.

We did a little sightseeing, Schoenbrun here:
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/dtwclipper/02-01-2008-101.jpg
The city in preparation for the Opera Ball:
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/dtwclipper/01-31-2008-070.jpg
We took in three operas, two at the Volksoper and one at the Wiener Staatsoper:

It was an incredible performance! We saw L'elisir d'amore at the Staatsoper and Orpheus in der Unterwelt and Hoffmanns Erzählungen at the Volksoper. The only big mistake we made is booking tickets for the night we arrived. We could hardly keep our eyes open the first night at the Volksoper.

From Vienna we headed by train to Innsbruck and then made a quick change for the trip to the Dolomites for skiing.

On the Seiser Alm we hooked up with some friends of ours from Milan.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/dtwclipper/02-06-2008-216.jpg
Next day we headed up to the Plose at about 3000 m.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/dtwclipper/02-09-2008-264.jpg
Back in Kastelruth we spent a day on the Marinzen Piste:

How about some fireworks from our hotel:
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/dtwclipper/02-11-2008-341.jpg
After ten days on the slopes we headed back to Munich to see family.

Date: Thursday, February 14 Flight: NW 8720/*KL 1794
Departs: Munich, Germany (MUC) at 11:50AM
Arrives: Amsterdam-Schiphol, Netherlands (AMS) at 1:40PM
Class of Service: Business Class (D) Seat: not assigned
Flight Duration: 1 hour 50 minutes Approximate Miles: 412
Meal Service: None Aircraft: 100
Note: *Operated by KLM CITYHOPPER/KLM
A/C: PH-OFM
We arrived at MUC about two hours before our scheduled departure time at the “C” section of the airport. Check in at the AF KL business Class was not the most pleasant experience. We got into a little tiff over the excess baggage limits on NW and the agent was getting ready to charge me an extra 130 Euros. After a phone call to her supervisor she let our items on board with no charge. We then headed over to the AF lounge. The place looked a little tired, but had the basics.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/dtwclipper/02-14-2008-380.jpg

Sadly the weather in MUC was not going to co-operate on this morning and we had some heavy fog. The inbound A/C PH-OFM was holding over Bavaria and landed almost an hour late.

This caused us a little concern as our generous connection in AMS was slowly becoming very tight. My only complaint about MUC is the V.A.T tax return office. I had to exit security and go to another section to get the tax return, but with the value of the Euro to the Dollar it made me feel a little be better about the money we spent!
We left about an hour and a half late. We had 3 A&B for the short flight over to AMS

Arrival in AMS:
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/dtwclipper/02-14-2008-400.jpg
We didn’t have much time in AMS to get over to the E concourse for our flight to DTW. To be honest it was a sprint! No time to spend shopping.

Date: Thursday, February 14 Flight: NW 53
Departs: Amsterdam-Schiphol, Netherlands (AMS) at 3:40PM
Arrives: Detroit-Wayne County Int'l, MI (DTW) at 6:40PM
Class of Service: World Business Class (D) Seat: 01-A Window, 01-B Aisle
Flight Duration: 9 hours Approximate Miles: 3,920
Meal Service: Dinner Aircraft: Airbus A330-200

After a hectic run through AMS we got to the gate and went through the standard security procedures. Since we were so late to the gate there was no line and we got right on board. We made a sharp left turn at L2 and headed straight up to 1A & B.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/dtwclipper/02-14-2008-403.jpg
WBC was about 50% full with plenty of overhead space in spite of our late arrival at the gate.

I have to say that the Purser and Crew on this flight were just great. They really went out of their way to make our trip great! I wrote NW this morning to let them know what great service we had. We had a chance to talk with the purser and he slipped us a bottle of Champaign to celebrate valentine’s day when we got home!

Dinner:

Salad of Mixed Greens

Appetizer of smoked chicken breast, goat cheese, roasted tomatoes with balsamic dressing
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/dtwclipper/02-14-2008-412.jpg

I had the Chicken Breast in a piccata sauce with fettuccine noodles and spinach

For dessert I had the Ice Cream sundae.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/dtwclipper/02-14-2008-418.jpg

It was at this point that I got up and noticed that this was no A330-300 but a -200! This was my first time on a 330-200 and hadn’t even noticed that there had been an equipment swap!
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/dtwclipper/02-14-2008-416.jpg

Over Canada
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/dtwclipper/02-14-2008-422.jpg
The second meal was a “European cold meat and cheese plate” which was very nice.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/dtwclipper/02-14-2008-424.jpg

We arrived right on schedule into DTW and pulled up to A38 where we had started our trip on 1/29!

A great trip on NW, super crew who made us feel like people and not just bodies in 1A and 1B!

Nice report with some excellent pics. The food looks very tasty!

Interesting to see NWA used an A332 on the route, doesn't happen very often.

How did you determine that you were on a -200 series rather than the -300?
Was it written on the Safety Card?
Or did you notice that the plane was a bit short in length?

On NW, WBC is split into two cabins on the -200.

-300

-200

Nope, it appears that NW uses one Safety card for all A330 A/C.

Nice report and photo's, thanks for sharing.

I must say all the meals looked pretty good, even the KL Cityhopper flight.

I had hoped to fly NW WBC later this year, however it will be CO's BF, not my prefered choice, but it get's my first 764 flight completed  Smile

Regards

Mark

Hola Dtwclipper!

Thanks for the TR.

It is always nice to hear about such great service on NW planes. I have flown the AMS-SEA-AMS route and the crew were more than efficient and caring in their work. So far, the best American crews I have encountered, miles ahead than AA, DL or even CO.

Quoting Dtwclipper (Thread starter):
L'elisir d'amore at the Staatsoper and Orpheus in der Unterwelt and Hoffmanns Erzählungen at the Volksoper.

Great operas! L'elisir d'amore is one of my favorites. I just saw it in the 2004-05 season at a wonderful Barcelona's Liceu opera production which I thought was really good. Was Hoffmanns' Erzählungen in German? I never liked much the translation of operas. I've seen a German production of Carmen and, IMO, has nothing to do with the original version.

You were really lucky! Something similar happened to me some years ago, before the stupid liquid restriction ban, when I was stuffed with about 20 little bottles of whiskey, Baileys... and other spirits by a more than generous purser on the TXL-LHR route with BA.

Salut!

Roger

Very nice report! How do you find the Fokkers? Are they spacious enough in business? How noisy are they?

Haha, I had the same thing happen to me with 767s. I was flying home VIE-YYZ-YVR, and both legs were scheduled for a 767-300 (OS and AC respectively), which I had flown numerous times. Upon arriving in YYZ I was beginning my third day without sleep, and had a fairly short connection. I didn't even look at the aircraft when I boarded, rather ran inside, sat down, and fell asleep. I woke up somewhere over the prairies, and then figured out that I was actually on a -200 by noticing how short the aircraft was, and the different saftey cards. I was pretty happy, because that was my first (and only) -200 flight.

Was Hoffmanns' Erzählungen in German?

Yes, it was in German, but it was a great performance.

Quoting Boeing744 (Reply 12):
How do you find the Fokkers?

A little bit better then an RJ. This was the first time I'd been on one since 4/01 when I was in F on an AA Fokker from DTW-DFW and DFW-DTW, so it was nice to be on board one again.

Quoting Boeing744 (Reply 12):
Are they spacious enough in business?

Not really, just the same 5 accross as in Y.

Quoting Boeing744 (Reply 12):
How noisy are they?

In row three I didn't find them too bad.

Aircraft: Airbus A330-200

Interesting they made this equipment swap. Do you know if your original plane was on MX or anything??

They must have swapped it with MEM flight - would be my best guess at least. I don't think NW has once sent an A333 to BOM. They have sent A333's to SEA on occasion though.

Anyhow, if you have anymore info as to the "why" for the equipment swap I'd love to hear it!!

Quoting Dtwclipper (Thread starter):

That's fantastic you had a great flight on NW. They tend to not get a lot of positive press on a.net, so it's great to hear you had an enjoyable flight - especially as a PlatinumElite, haha.

One more thing - do you know if serving ice cream is a new thing for NW?? I've never seen it before, personally or in a TR??
