QFLink -Dash8-400 BNE To CNS - Part 2 (pics)

This is Part 2 of my recent trip report "Dashing up the Queensland Coast" where on 9 March 2008, I was fortunate to fly the Queensland Coastal Milk Run from Brisbane to Cairns with Qantaslink via Rockhampton, Mackay and Townsville.

Part 1 finished in Rockhampton (ROK) where I changed flights and aircraft from QF2352 to QF2308.

My Qantaslink Dash 8 - 400 VH-QOB "Yeppoon" had brought me safely to ROK where I eagerly awaited the next three sectors.

In the end, I was only in ROK for just over 45 mins due to the late departure of QF2352 from Brisbane earlier that morning.

I was very pleased to see the arrival of QF2308, which was in the new slightly revised Qantas colours.

QF2308
ROK - MKY - TSV - CNS
VH-QOI
Seat 12 D

VH-QOI arrived from Brisbane via Gladstone and was schedule to operate the remainder of QF2308. From Rockampton to Cairns, with two intermediate stops, would take nearly 3 hours!

Here she is in ROK, getting read for her dash northwards. to Mackay and beyond. There was no other traffic at ROK at this time apart from a lone Qantaslink Dash 8 - 300 which had also arrived from Brisbane.

Boarding QF2308 for the first leg to Mackay (MKY).

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2035/2361270761_513cbcbeef_o.jpg

This was the view from my new seat - 12D

The first leg was almost full, although again, I was fortunate to have the seat next to me spare. The cabin on this brand new aircraft was immaculate. Seating was comfortable and it still had that "new car" smell inside. The cabin door was closed and before long, we were ready to go. We taxied back along the main runway for a departure from RW15. There were no hold ups and before long, we launched into the clear sky.

Again, the recent flooding was evident all around as we climbed out of the airport and set course for Mackay. Mackay has also suffered from severe flooding with almost 600mm of rain falling in 6 hours just two weeks before I did this trip. I just hoped there was still an airport at MKY for us to land at!

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3086/2361271717_ab8d98bd4a_o.jpg

A sharp right turn and we were soon flying parallel to the airport - affording great views of Rockhampton Airport down below. The city of Rockhampton is in the background.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2123/2361272159_fc8efcfa26_o.jpg

Our flight time today to Mackay was 50 minutes - and no food or snacks were served. We were provided with tea and coffee and juice free of charge. Again, the inflight service on this sector was professional, friendly, yet relaxed. Our cruising altitude on this sector was 16,000ft which gave us all the chance to look out of the windows - not that many people were doing that except me.

View of our starboard prop, enroute to MKY

Again, the flooding all along the coast was clear from 16,000ft.

It was not long before we started our descent, and there were occasional glimpses of the coastline through the puffy clouds.

Here is Hay Point, south of Mackay, a major port for loading of minerals/natural resources from the interior of Queensland.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2039/2361273229_979eed0765_o.jpg

We approached the airport from the south west, giving us a view of it on the downwind leg, before making sharp right turns to align with the main runway. Due to high winds, the approach was rather bumpy - probably the most turbulent of all the sectors I flew on that day.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3259/2362105166_172f0061fa_o.jpg

The suburbs of Mackay under our starboard wheel - on final approach. Mackay is 603 miles (970km) north of Brisbane and is known as the sugar capital of Australia - there are so many sugar cane fields in the region and Mackay is a major producer of sugar in Australia. Mackay is a young city, having its modern origins in 1860 although the area had been occupied for many hundreds of years before by the Yuibera people. It is also the place of Australia's worst civil air disaster - when in 1960 a F-27 crashed on approach to MKY in bad weather, killing all 29 people on board.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3143/2362105528_6fde4c15ca_o.jpg

After all the buffetting around, we made a smooth landing on RW14 - the main runway here. A short taxi to the terminal followed, where passengers who were destined for Townsville and/or Cairns were asked to remain onboard. Our turnaround time in MKY was short. About 15 people left us here and approximately 8 new passengers joined us for the journey north.

The only company we had at MKY was a Virgin Blue EM170 which was parked nearby. It was my first time to see one of these new jungle jets - which having sampled one in 2006 in US Airways Express colours from BOS to PHL, I can vouch for the amazingly comfortable ride that the EM170 provides. Lucky passengers on the Virgin Blue aircraft were about to experience such comfort. There are no international flights to MKY - all flights, as far as I am aware, are domestic.

It wasn't long before the props started up again for the next sector to Townsville. We backtracked up the active runway, and without any delay, hurtled down the runway and into the sky.

The terminal building lies below, along with the Virgin Blue EM170 being readied for departure.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3107/2361274223_3b57a4f4aa_o.jpg

A similar departure pattern as with Rockampton followed. We banked sharply to the right and turned back over the airport, affording similar views. I managed to get a snap of MKY just before we entered a low cloud bank.

Farewell to the city of Mackay

So much water down there - at least the landscape was now green

The flight time today to Townsville was another short 55 mins. There was a food service on this sector, which consisted of a chocolate brownie. Complementary drinks were also provided. Our cruising height was 20,000ft for this sector.

Townsville was founded in 1859 when a sea captain by the name of Robert Towns commissioned John Melton Black to build a wharf on Cleveland Bay to service the new cattle industry inland. The "town" was declared a city in 1903. Townsville lies 1,300 km north of Brisbane.

The city of Townsville, after we commenced our descent. The airport lies in the far top left of the picture.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3039/2361288697_f23a440ce1_o.jpg

According to Wikipedia, during World War II, the city played host to over 50,000 American and Australian troops as it became a major staging point for battles in the South West Pacific. A large United States Armed Forces contingent supported the war effort from various bases around the city and General Douglas Macarthur made Townsville his base for sometime.

On finals for TSV

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3055/2361289643_567264bba9_o.jpg

Our landing was again smooth and a short taxi later, we were at our gate. Next door was a Qantas 737-400 preparing for departure. Apart from that, nothing else of much note. There were two Macair SF340s sitting on the ramp with no activity around them. At this point, our aircraft was a hive of activity, with numerous people getting off, and about 10 new passengers boarding. Again, as at MKY, passengers continuing to Cairns were asked to remain onboard. I had a chance to snap a quick pic of the seats aboard VH-QOI.

Before long, it was time to say farewell to TSV, and get ready for the last sector to Cairns (CNS). Flight time would be just over 1 hour.

Take off was toward the east and it wasn't long before we were out over the Pacific Ocean, before turning left and heading northwards for our final destination.

Good bye Townsville!

Climbing out over the Pacific Ocean meant that we would have some great views of some of the Great Barrier Reef.

Within 20 mins of climbing out, and whilst eating my ice cream that was served on this sector, I had some amazing views. Our maximum cruising height on this sector was 18,000ft.

One of my favourite pics of the trip - beautiful Queensland!

More pics of the Great Barrier Reef, just before we started our descent into Cairns.

Cairns is situated on the lands of the Irukandji people, and although first sighted by Europeans by Cpt James Cook in 1770, it wasn't until 1876 that a European settlement at Cairns was established. Cairns was named after William Wellington Cairns (the then Governor of Queensland) to serve miners heading for the Hodgkinson River goldfield. Cairns' future was secured as it developed into a railhead and major port for the exportation of sugar cane, gold, precious metals and agricultural industries from the surrounding coastal and Tableland regions.

Some pics of our descent into CNS

Crossing the coastline on final approach

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2364/2361426377_0ebf5f1ace_o.jpg

Lots of water here too - but that's normal for Cairns, which is a tropical city with distinct wet and dry seasons.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2046/2361426731_dabab420a9_o.jpg

With a gentle thud, we touched down in Cairns. My journey was over - after almost 4 hours, I had travelled 1,701 km (1,057 miles) from Brisbane in a Dash 8 - 400.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3092/2361427171_8a1768d0b6_o.jpg

Welcome to Cairns

Qantaslink provided a professional and relaxed service on board. Apart from the delay in Brisbane, I could not fault them (and I am certainly no huge fan of Qantas). Both Dash 8s were immaculate inside and out. I was treated to some amazing scenery during each sector. The Coastal Milk Run was now no longer a dream - I'd done it! Would I do it again? You bet!

For those interested - I've included some pics of Brisbane taken during my visit -

OK, Palmjob... you've got stop. Your tails of intrigue, mystery and aviadventure are overwhelming my chubby senses. Why the push to make your stories sooo... educational? I don't give a high holy cr@p about Australian history (unless it has to do with British exiled convicts). Show me Auss'airplanes! I'm just not one who likes to learn things as I read - I want to be entertained, not schooled. It'll be back to my mindless and poorly-acted South African soaps after I've had my say around here...

- Exceptional shots this go-round. You using a Canon DSLR or, say... a Sony T200? Love the aerial airport shots.

- Must have been hard recalling Australia's worst-ever air disaster, as you flew nearly the same route, at the same time of year, in the same seat as someone less fortunate, in a similar (albeit newer model) propjob into MKY. How was that brownie? Chocolaty guilt goes down hard, eh? You'll be carrying that with you for some time...

- MKY is a "young" city, having been founded in 1860? Damn man, that's older than almost any US city I've ever been to, except PHL (apparently you were there, too). And since we all know the USofA sets the standard for all things good and right in the world, I'd say you owe all readers around the globe a correction: MKY is indeed an "old" city - by US standards - the only City Aging Standard System that matters. Who's been schooled now, home girl?
MESSAGE!

- WTF were you doing in BOS flying to PHL on a US E170? Could it have been the very same E170 which took me to/from MCO-EWY?? -- I busted my Jungle Jet Fever on that little beast, thank you very much, whilst you had Sloppy Seconds!!

- I am soo relieved that QF had a Roo'Redoo. The old kangaroo motif did seem a bit dated and tired. I recall once sitting in SYD taking photos of QF birds because I couldn't muster the energy to stand-up properly and observe - probably a result of the old PooPooRoo. Now, with the new Sporty Roo TooDo, I'd chase those planes down the concourse... which for me probably means reaching a short sprint & heavy sweat before collapsing with a heart attack. Ah well, that's age & poundage for ya. But what would you care...? My camera and aeroplane model collection has been earmarked for you in my will, and you know it. You probably want me dead... Well, I'm taking the rust coloured US 727 to my grave, bia'tch!! Come dig it out...

Thanks for all the shots. The story. And the Aussieducation... even if I am still somewhat bitter...
 Smile

I can't stop giggling. Thanks so much yet again for making me believe that it was worth writing the trip report.

Glad you enjoyed the Aussie education as well - even though Mackay is indeed a young city. Heck, there are heaps of older cities in the great US of A. Didn't they teach you anything in NJ?

OK, I could not help flying from BOS to PHL, esp as my trip had originated in NY. Flying US Airways was a dream come true. The levels of service I experienced were of such giddy heights that nothing else has ever compared since.

I used my Canon pocket cam for this trip report. I bought it in MCO last year. I think you might know the camera shop I got it from.

Cheers!

I did a day trip to CBR on the EMB-170 and returned on the Q400. I thought the EMB was by far superior... in saying that the Q400 beats all the other dash 8's int he QF fleet hands down!

The Dash 8 - 400 is lovely - despite all the negative press it has received here in Europe because of the incidents which occurred with SAS' fleet. As far as I am aware, QFLink have not had the same issues with theirs.

So you don't get out in Mackay and Townsville; seen inside Townsville recently but haven't been inside Mackay for about 15 years so I am sure its changed just a bit.

Thanks for the great photos.

Thanks for your post. No, unfortunately no getting out at MKY or TSV on my flight. It would have been nice to have a look at the terminals and I was surprised at just how quickly our turnaround times were in MKY and TSV.

Hope you enjoy your ride "south" next month.

Interestingly, I note on the brand new QFLink Dash 8 safety cards that it clearly says that the use of photgraphic equipment is not prohibited at any time during the flight (if it is for personal purposes) - including at take off or landing. I have been caught out numerous times here in Europe by over zealous flight attendants telling me to put my camera away -and even on approach into MKY, the flight attendant asked me politely to switch off my little camera. I was about to wave the safety card at her and say that I was allowed to use the camera, but thought better of it, and simply waited til she was seated.

I've seen some other posts on here recently about whether taking still pictures on flights is permitted. It seems every airline has a different approach - but in the case of Qantaslink, they seem to be saying that it's OK.

Thanks again

Same with Jetstar International, which is also part of the QF group. I didn't see the message on my recent QF 737-400 flight, but the safety cards were quite old. On Jetstar I had a FA tell me to put my camera away on descent despite the card and like you I followed her instructions.

Allrite and Jmy007 - thanks for your comments!

Interesting about what you found on Jetstar Allrite. I've never understood why, only in recent times, taking pics during take off and landing has become an issue. I had an especially nasty flight attendant on VLM a couple of years ago who was very distressed that I was taking pics when we were taxiing out of LCY. I simply complied with her request there too.

Jmy007, it was indeed a pleasure - so relaxed and the way flying used to be.

If anyone is able to book on QF2308 from Brisbane to Cairns, which stops in Gladstone before it gets to Rockhampton - let me know! Qantaslink would not sell me a ticket on that flight all the way from Brisbane. I had to fly the direct flight to ROK before meeting up with QF308 there.

I expect that was because the sector between Gladstone and Rockhampton was full - but I did not see evidence of this when I watched the passengers leave the aircraft after it arrived in ROK!!

Great report and pictures, glad there are a few of us still out there that will take a flight the "hard way" just to flight and visit some new places.

If I ever get the time (to scan my slides that is), I have a similar report to write on a trip back in '73 (for you jokers it was 1973 not 1873) on an AIR WEST F-27 from SEA to SFO, via PDX, RDM, LMT, and SMF. A long day of travelling, but great trip.
By the way..that plane N750L is still around, flying in Argentina, last time I checked. They are some tough birds.

Allrite - what's not to miss about Rocky?????

I lived in Rocky collectively for almost 2 years. What's there not to miss? Hahaha.... I had a ball of a time when I was there. It was so laid back I had problem trying to get up to speed when I got back to Singapore!

The people were genuinely nice (small town mentality) and were very curious about my life back in Singapore. Most of them could not relate to the fast paced environment I come from. In fact, there were some of them who have never crossed the Fitzroy River to go to the OTHER side of Rocky, let alone LEAVE Rocky to venture elsewhere (I kid you not).

I spent my work life there living in a motel and the cleaning lady would, on my days off, leave her car keys in my room with a note that said "ENJOY YOURSELF TODAY!". No one at the motel would allow me to rent a car and would insist that I borrowed theirs. So they would get a hold of my work schedule and on my days off after I returned, a set of car keys would mysteriously appear on my desk. Let's just say due to that, I am a very familiar driver of Holden Commodores! Hahaha...

Needless to say, when it was time for me to leave, it was tears galore at the airport. This is why I hold Rocky very close to my heart.

People like these are hard to come by. They seem to be un-tarnished by the developments outside of them and they open their hearts to you unconditionally, which was something I found very, very endearing. Friends I have made, I keep in contact with them till today and I have also gone back to Rocky on my own accord, all the way from Singapore, for a holiday. Fly into BNE, and drive 9 hours up north.

Here's a another little story of mine. I flew (for the first time) into ROK on a military cartered Singapore Airlines 747-400. The runway was extended just to accomodate this plane and when we landed at 0430H, the fence of the airport was line up with CROWDS of locals with their hands clenched against the fence, having never ever seen a 747 in their life.

When the doors opened, as we walked down the stairs, the press was there with flashbulbs going off and it immediately reminded me of an era gone by when movie stars were greeted at the plane with HEAPS of photographers. The next mornng, it went to press and "FIRST 747 LANDS IN ROCKY" screamed the headlines. Mind you this was front page coverage!

Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!
