This is my third trip report of a intercontinental flight to Brazil, my first- and second one you see here and here. In these trip reports you can read that I visit two times a year Brazil. About two months before my planned (leisure) trip I search on the Internet for the best offers. This time offered Alitalia the best price, but I'm always a bit scary of Alitalia. The change that, or Alitalia personnel, or ground personnel, or traffic controllers, or some others strikes is statistic maybe small but in my perception to big that I decided not to use their offer.

Second best was BA and I could it combined with the opening of Terminal 5 so that was for me a reason this time to go with British Airways. OK, in February I read on a.net that Lufthansa offered tickets half of the price what I have paid by BA but that's risk with an early booking. For my airport of departure I chose this time for Brussels, for me the first time and a test because due the new so called 'green taxes' is it for people who lived in the Netherlands very interesting start the trip in BRU or DUS instead AMS.

As always when Internet check in is possible I set my alarm, this time on Saturday evening the 8 of March at 10:45 pm. I had not real good looking because the check in was already 20 minutes open. Most of the best seats (emergency exit and row 40) were occupied. Thanks seatguru.com I chose seat 52 J and for the flight to London seat 9A. Compared to the most other seats in this class I had now one with the most leg space.

Next day I leave my house and went to the train station, had already bought my train ticket so at 3:10 pm I take my seat in the train with destination Brussels. About two hours later I was at Zaventem, for me the first time. It's a very relax airport, not crowded, easy to navigate, passport control by friendly personnel (Dutch controllers take an example of them!!). I dropped my suitcase by the check in desk of BA and went to the gate. First what I saw, a Martinair plane, be in Belgium and see a Dutch 767 with destination Phuket, beside a few freighters it was the only (passengers) wide body what I saw there. At 6:30 pm there arrived the BA A319, docked at gate B6 and 15 minutes later the ground crew announced that boarding started. The captain apologized his that the flight was delayed due the bad weather circumstances in London. But this flight has no slot restrictions so we could direct depart.

Push back started 7:06 pm and 11 minutes later we were airborne. Seat belts signs went off and the crew started with serving the drinks and a 'sweet chilli chicken wrap'. They don't have a lot of time for this service because BRU-LHR is a short flight and the normal flight time is only 40 minutes. This time was it 10 minutes longer because before landing we circled 2 time above North East London. At 7:07 pm local time we landed smoothly on runway 09R, fifteen minutes later I was standing for the first time in one of the LHR terminals. My connection flight departed in same terminal where I arrived so I was relative fast in the departure hall of terminal 4 and what a different with BRU. So crowded, so many shops, so less information. Little bit overwhelmed I searched which gate I had. Near the Starbucks I saw an information panel. They displayed flight number but no gate number, Finally 8:35 pm they displayed the gate number. Fifteen later I arrived at the gate. There stands already a long row, some times there was a little movement. The official departure time was passed but no info, at 9:35 pm first time there was announcement that the boarding starts.

Slowly shrunk the row, 9:50 pm I went through the boarding control. I expected an air bridge but a little bit surprised I came in a lounge where we must wait for a bus. A bus, I thought 'is this the biggest airport of Europe and a 300+ passenger flight boarded with buses and air stairs'. Okay later explained the captain that due maintenance problems that we departed from the apron number 451. At 10:20 pm I had take my seat in an almost full loaded plane, one of crew members apologized in behalf of BA, in English and Portuguese, for the delay, told us how the scheduling was of the food and beverage service, expected flight time and that we for control of the AVOD not use the switches in the armrest but only the one of the touch screen, otherwise they must reset the system.

Doors closed and at 10:40 pm we got our push back, after 12 minutes we started at runway 27R for an 11 hour flight to GRU. Seat belts went off and the flight crew started serving of peanuts with a drink. The schedule of the other services was:
-1,5 hour flight time, first meal, rice dessert, potato/mackerel salad, 2 sausages, mashed potatoes with vegetables, a bottle water, bread with butter and a candy bar.
- 2 hour flight time, coffee or tea,
- 9.5 hour flight time, English breakfast, egg omelette, sausage, mushrooms, yoghurt and orange juice.
(Pictures of all the meals during the in- and outbound flights you can see here, all my other aviation and the to this report related pictures which I've taking during this trip you can see here}.
Between the meals the FA served every 2 hours orange juice and water, in the meantime I watching two films, a few TV programs and listening to some music.

After about 10,5 hours flight time the seat belts signs went on, the captain announced that we were 20 minutes prior landing. Slowly approached the 747 São Paulo, through the windows I saw the first skyscrapers and not long after that at 6:56 am local time we landed smoothly at runway 09L. Ten minutes later the Jumbo stood at the gate, Roughly 60% of passengers and the F/A crew leaves the plane. We must wait more than a hour before we got our push back for the second sector to GIG. It was rush hour at GRU so we must wait until 8:25 am before we could taxi to the runway. Five minutes later we were flying to GIG. we became one drink and after 50 minutes flight time we landed in a sunny Rio de Janeiro.

At 9:36 am we docked at gate 10 of terminal 1. I went relative fast through passport and custom control. Took a meal in one of the restaurants and went downstairs where I took the bus to my destination. After one day in Rio de Janeiro I made a city trip, the report of that trip you can read here Brazil Domestic 4 Flights With 3 Airlines. Saturday the 15 of March I returned and stays until the 26 of March in this marvellous city.

Every holiday has an end and I must prepare me for the return flight, so 24 hours prior departure I was sitting in an Internet café for the check in, and yes this time the best seats were available and so I could chose one of them. Next day with the taxi to GIG, arrived 1:00 pm at terminal 1. By the check in stood a row of 20 people, but only one person by the fast drop counter, within a few minutes I had dropped my bag and went very fast through the passport and security check. On the apron I saw already the BA747, later they tugged the Jumbo with registration G-BYGA to gate 10. Boarding, push back, the start and the flight to GRU went smoothly. At 4:00 pm we docked at gate 07, new FA crew came in and first GRU passengers boarded. Lot of international carriers were this time at GRU and I was hoping that I could see the landing of an KL77W but unfortunately not this time. At 5:38 pm we started from runway 09L and with sometimes a ground speed from more than 1.000 km/hour we flew to London.

The schedule of the food and beverage was as same as the inbound flight, thus:
- 0.5 hour flight time peanuts with a drink,
- 1,5 hour flight time, first meal, dessert, salad, beef, mashed potatoes with vegetables, a bottle water, bread with butter.
- 2 hour flight time, coffee or tea,
- 9.5 hour flight time, English breakfast, egg omelette, muffin, sausage, mushrooms and orange juice.
During the flight I was watching to two films, TV programs, would watching to the BBC world news but that was not available. Reading was most of the flight time not possible because my reading lamp was broken.

At 7:00 am local time we flew above London, I saw the Twickenham rugby stadium, the double decker buses, etc.. At 7:10 am we landed smoothly at runway 27L. I watched to all the planes outside and saw a huge blue tail above the 747 tails of the Virgin Atlantic. I thought 'Is it, is it, yes it is the A380 of Singapore Airlines'. What an impressive plane, it's IMO not a beauty but every one who loves aviation must see that plane. Our 'small' 747 docked at one of the gates of terminal 4. At 7:40 am I stood in the terminal. My connection flight departed from the new terminal 5, I walked to the bus. With a 15 minutes ride I arrived at 8:10 am in the new terminal. What a huge different with T4, it's spacious,it's magnificent! Impressed by the Norman Foster architecture I took the escalator (didn't see any stair) to the first floor. There was a passport control and ticket check, from there to the second floor. But we must wait for a minute. On the second floor was a huge crowd, all waiting for the security checks. After 20 minutes I passed the check, first to the ATM for some Pounds and then to one of the restaurants where I drank a cappuccino and ate a muffin and a sandwich.

Some construction details

Info screens at T5
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff122/desert_751/HPIM6030.jpg

In comparison to T4 you see in T5 a lot info screens, but no gate number for flight BA 0402, they displayed at 9:27 am first time that we must go the B concourse. I don't understand why they displayed it so late, in AMS for example you can find on the Internet the gate number for next day departing flights. At 9:40 am I was at the concourse, again cappuccino and sitting behind the huge windows I was watching to all the activities at LHR. At 10:10 am first time I saw the gate number (B47). Ten minutes later I was by the gate, there came the announcement that the flight 30 minutes was delayed. At 10:47 we could boarding. After we were sitting in A319 the 'soap' started, chronological passed following:
- 11:10 am announcement of the captain that the 'state of the art' baggage system this morning was broken,
- 11:28 am a purser announced that the bags arrived within 10 minutes,
- 11:45 am no bags arrived, proposal depart without the bags. Flight crew asked every passenger and it was possible to leave the plane.
- 12:12 pm a problem, there was no procedure how passengers could leave the aircraft through the arrival hall.
- 12:30 pm door open, about 16 passengers leave the aircraft,
- 12:43 pm we got our push back.
It was a long ride to runway 27R, there we must wait. Finally 1:08 pm we were airborne. LHR - BRU is a short flight. The food and beverage was simple, a little can coke and this time no peanuts but a mix of crunchy bites, fruits and seeds. At 2:55 pm local time we landed in a rainy Brussels, after the door opened I most of passengers walked to the counter Aviapartner. There we must fill in the form for the delayed 'terminal 5' bags. With only my hand luggage I leaved Brussels Airport and 3 hours later I was at home there I watched the news where they reported that already 15.000 bags were delayed.

Huge windows

Just before landing at BRU
http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff122/desert_751/HPIM6078.jpg

To conclude, it was a pleasant flight with BA despite the delay of the last flight, the crew was friendly, the AVOD system is okay. The 'bag' problem is of course a shame, in this case I can understand a delay of one or two days but until today (4 of April) my missing bag has the status 'TRACING CONTINUES. PLEASE CHECK BACK LATER'. I've the luck that I'm now at home but imagine when you are traveling. The airports, BRU is relax, easy to navigate, not crowded. Terminal 4 is a mess, now I understand all the complaints which I read here on a.net. Terminal 5 is great. Next time with BA, I doubt, how they now solve my bag problem is for me a reason thinking twice before I decide to fly with BA again.

I hope you enjoy it,

Regards,

Hans

A really entertaining report- I am a huge fan of brazil, I am due to study there for a year soon. You're lucky you get to go there so often, and sampling many different airlines.

Hi Hans,

Nice report, thanks.

Food looks pretty good as usual, something BA tends to get right.

Hope your bags turn up soon, the whole baggage thing is a bit of a disaster!

- What a pain, I tend to read on flights rather than watch TV/Films

This is because the authorities who operate LHR don't want you to go to your gate too early before your flight. Instead, they keep you in the shopping area until about 30 minutes before departure time. All part of their plan to try and get you to spend money in the shops.

Nice report and good luck with your luggage! Also nice variety of carriers for your trips to Brazil (BA, KLM and Varig).
What airline of these three do you prefer?
Flying to Brazil I was on Iberia, TAM and Lufthansa up to now (and a decade ago on Líneas Aéreas Paraguayas). Up to now I prefer LH and JJ over IB.
Hopefully I'll write my first report after my next flight in May...

I doubt that there is a big difference between AMS and LHR in the turnover per passenger for the shops.

Quoting Robffm2 (Reply 5):
What airline of these three do you prefer?

I've flown 2 times TAP too, when I make a rank.
1 KLM (777 with a very good AVOD system, friendly crew, Internet check in and AMS)
2 BA (AVOD, friendly crew, Internet check in)
3 'old' Varig with the 777 (AVOD)
4/5 TAP and the new Varig (TAP bad connection in LIS, no AVOD. New Varig, you can read in my TR why)

By my decision which airliner I choose is, beside the price, AVOD almost a demand because I can't sleep during such a long flight. For my next trip to GRU or GIG I consider now LX, AF, JJ or KL.

Regards, Hans

Don't forget LH, I just bought a ticket to GRU for next month for only 450 €, in January I was there also with LH for just 330 €.
You need to be flexible though, as these are special sales. And LH has no AVOD on the 747 from FRA nor the 340-300 from MUC.

Many thanks for your report and pics -- very entertaining. Hope you had a nice time in Brazil.

I was a little confused with your references to outbound and inbound flights.

If you were going Brussels - Sao Paulo, and Brussels was your origin point, that would be your outbound flight.

Your inbound flight would have been the one that you took to come home from Brazil.

There is another very important point.
At T5 when you take the train to the B pier, you can't get back to the main building without going through security and immigration. It was the same in T1. If you went out onto Pier 3 (gates 15-26) you could not go back to the terminal. So they do not issue gate numbers until they are sure that the aircraft is parked on the gate.
I used to get so annoyed in T1. Sitting in the crowded main hall, then out to the Europier which was deserted!
