Continental Airlines MSP-EWR
Flight 692 July 26, 2001
Expected Departure Time: 4:42 PM
Expected Arrival Time: 8:40 PM
I got to MSP at about 3:30 PM, so I could wander around, and explore parts I haven't seen of MSP. The aircraft was coming from IAH, and since there were storms, I had to wait a while. I only expected an hour delay, and continued my exploration of the E Concourse. The E Concourse was busy, an Air Tran flight was boarding to ATL, a Delta was boarding to CVG, a USAirways was boarding to PIT, a United was boarding to Denver, and TWA to STL. All the other gates were occupied with planes waiting for boarding time. I was done exploring two concourses, and admiring a KLM 747-400 departing to AMS, and went back to my gate at E9. The plane was visible, but it came an hour late. They switched the aircraft to the Air Tran gate at gate E1. I walked down, and sat for another hour. At 7:00 PM, I finally boarded the plane. I was flying by myself, and since there was a delay, I didn't care, I was in no rush. The flight was full, and I had the window seat in seat 18A, and a very nice guy had the aisle seat 18C, no one sat between us. We tookoff, after waiting for a UA and DL plane to depart, and a few NWA aircraft to land. We had a nice takeoff, but it took a little while longer than normal to rotate. Once in the air, we got our food. I got a tuna sandwich, yogurt, candy, and a beverage. The meal was quite good, nothing to complain about. About 10 min into the flight, a NWA plane was headed in the opposite direction, most likely going to MSP. We had a nice ride, with very little turbulance, and the guy in 18C gave me a few of his magazines to read. It is interesting to see Lake Michigan from the air, you can see across both sides. We got to the New Jersey/New York area pretty late, and it was dark outside. But that didn't bother me, I loved night landings. We landed smoothly on the runway at EWR, and taxiied off. To my surprise, there was an aircraft at our gate, and no marshaller. We stood idle between the takeoff and landing runways at EWR. I saw an Aer Lingus A330 depart, British Airways 777, many Continental aircraft, and a few that I forget. Many Continental planes were landing, and I also saw the DC-9 of NWA from MSP that tookoff and hour after we departed. We pulled up, and waited another half our by another runway. This runway wasn't as busy, but I enjoyed watching the late night CO ERJ flights depart. We pulled up to the gate around 10:30 PM, and was excited to see the modified terminal. I always stay seated until everyone is off the plane, I like being off last, I can get my luggage out without knocking someone on the head. I give this flight a perfect score, if I don't connect, I enjoy delayed flights. 10/10
Continental Airlines EWR-MSP
Flight 697 August 12, 2001
Expected Departure Time: 11:55 AM
Expected Arrival Time: 1:55 PM
I got to EWR about an hour early, and checked my big luggage. I checked my ticket at the gate, which was gate C73. The flight just arrived from somewhere, and the aircraft was sitting at the gate. I explored as much of the terminal as I could. The gate next to us had people boarding a Continental DC-10 to HNL. I saw flights from Continental boarding to IAH, Seattle, Bermuda, London, Orlando, Phoenix, and a few other places. I saw the new Continental 767s, and a few 777s. I boarded the plane first again, and boarded at 11:20 AM. I got the Boeing 737-500, which smelt fresh, and looked nice. I sat down in my seat which was 20F. A couple which just got off Virgin Atlantic flight from London, were looking at their little freebie they got when they got off. We pulled from the gate, and taxiied. We taxiied past several NG 737s, DC-10, and 757s from CO. A TAP Air Portugal flight arrived, and the plane was a A310. We were ready to get in line, but we had to wait first for a AA 757, UA 757, NWA DC-9, Malaysia 777, and Singapore Airlines 747-400. We got in line, and waited 15 min for our turn. We turned onto the runway, and tookoff. Takeoff was interesting, since the clouds were low, and it was raining. We were in the clouds in a few seconds. In the clouds, about 2 min after takeoff, humidty formed over the wings for a brief second, and make a huge boom noise, which made the plane drop a little. I was very happy to see that happen. We got over the clouds, and the sky was blue, with bright sun. I just love that feeling, it's the best feeling in the world, being over the clouds, and seeing the blue sky with the bright sun. We got our food, which was a sandwich, and some other things, I didn't have anything since I wasn't hungry, and couldn't tell exactly what the whole meal was, the couple next to me were eating their own bag lunches! We had a nice flight, with a little turbulance. The sun was bright the whole time. We passed over Lake Michigan, and then started our descent to MSP. We got to the Minneapolis area, and I was eavesdropping on the couple's conversation. They were taking a connection to somewhere else next from MSP on NWA. We came in lower than usual, and settled down nicely on the runway. We pulled off, and went directly to our gate, which was E9. I saw an Icelandair 757, many NWA planes, and a very nice looking NWA Cargo 747. We got to the gate, and we were back in MSP.
I'll have another trip report soon, I am flying from MSP-PVD on September 3, 2001 on NWA's new CRJ aircraft!
