Reason For Trip:

With a 4 day long weekend, decided that is time to pay another quick visit to one of my favorite cities, Hong Kong!

20 March 2008

Jakarta (CGK) – Hong Kong (HKG)

Airline: Garuda GA860
Aircraft: B737-800
Registration: EI-DMZ (Leased from Futura)
1st Flight: 22 April 2005
ETD: 0915
ATD: 1000
ETA: 1450
ATA: 1520
Flight time: 4 hour 15 minutes
Seat: 1A
Class: Business
Cruise: 38000 feet

Pre Flight

This time we decided to take GA as its been a long time since I have been on a GA international flight, plus they had pretty attractive offers on Business class, so I guessed why not give it a go. We arrived at a very busy airport about 1 hour 20 minutes before departure. Check in took around 10 minutes and then it was off to the GA Lounge.

Busy GA Check In Area

The international lounge is very similar in design and layout to the domestic one.

When boarding was announced, we leisurely strolled up to the gate and was pleasantly surprised to see that our B738 today was EI-DMZ, which is an aircraft leased from Futura.

Ground and Cockpit crew were from Futura while cabin crew was GA.

In Flight

They loaded J seats onto this aircraft while the Y seats are still original Futura.

A really cheery crew on board. They also warned us to expect a delay in departure as a connecting passengers from a flight from Makassar were delayed at immigrations. Great! Last thing I wanted on a short holiday is a delay to my departure. Being a long weekend, it was no doubt that J & Y were 100% full. EI-DMZ was also sandwiched between 2 of GA other B738.

Cheap Looking Amenity Set

The J seats on DMZ are the same as on PK-GEE which I took on the return back from Bali last week, but the cushions on DMZ certainly feel more firm. After a 45min delay and after giving death stares to the late passengers (they still went to purchase duty free) we were off. The flight itself was uneventful and not much turbulence except during, well, you guys guessed it, when the meals were served! This Futura aircraft was equipped with overhead LCD monitors

but guess what, GA forgot to load headphones into the flight!

Didn’t really bothered me as I had my own plus with my laptop in hand,

Menu

and the wife was busy reading a magazine and taking naps. I usually hate long flights on narrowbody aircraft, but this instance, it was really comfy. Before we knew it, we touched down into Hong Kong and I was glad we were finally in Hong Kong, time to get some shopping and eating done!

Scenes from the Airport Express Train

Hotel Stay

Conrad Hong Kong

Great hotel, great room, great size, the problem is, on my last night we moved to Island Shang-rila as Conrad had to conduct emergency repairs to their electrical supply.

Room: 8/10
Service: 9/10
Location: 7/10

Island Shang-Rila

Great for the Conrad to arrange last minute accommodation for me at the Shang Rila next door, and with my corporate rates too. By the time we hauled our luggage there, everything was already set up, and I was also upgraded to the executive floor. Service at the Shang-Rila was excellent.

Room: 7/10
Service: 10/10
Location: 7/10

23 March 2008

Hong Kong (HKG) – Jakarta (CGK)

Airline: Garuda GA8632 (Extra Flight)
Aircraft: B737-800
Registration: PK-GEE
1st Flight: 12 March 2002
ETD: 1700
ATD: 1710
ETA: 2045
ATA: 2040
Flight time: 4 hour 33 minutes
Seat: 1A
Class: Business
Cruise: 36000 feet

Pre Flight

After a nice 4 days in Hong Kong, its now time to head back home to Jakarta. Time really flies when you are in Hong Kong, theres just so much to do. The Hong Kong Express Train got us into the airport in no time and after a quick and empty check in, we proceeded airside to check the shops out. And as usual, I also loaded up on my magazines.

I did some spotting and also spotted EI_DMZ ready to go 1 hour earlier than my aircraft which was PK-GEE.

After some shopping we decided to go to the lounge which was really at the far end of the airport.

Cathay Asia’s World City B773ER

It was certainly a long walk to the departure gate. When we got to the gate, we noticed that it was another full load back to Jakarta.

In Flight

PK-GEE was the same aircraft which took me back from Bali a week ago, and surprise, I also sat on the same seat.

We taxied out to runway 07R and after waiting for several aircraft to take off, we were 5th in line.

Menu starting to look better by the day

Caught some movies on my laptop and also managed to sleep after the meal. Overall another good and pleasant flight by GA. Hope you guys enjoyed it!

Cheers!!

I got to post another TR which I just came back from last week (FRA & LEJ with TG in F) , and will do it once I upload the photos.

Nice report. Great that you got on the FUA B738 on the way out too.

Can't beleive I haven't been to HKG yet (apart from the airport). Really must get a trip arranged sometime.

Nice TR as always!

The food looks very nice, strange thing that they don't write what the appetiser is on the menu. The seat looks really nice, i assume that the seat on the outbound flight was more comfy than the one on the return.

Thanks for sharing.

Well, I can truly say that although I travel all over the world, HKG is truly one of my favourties

Yups, coz the seats on the Futura aircraft have only been recently refurbished by GA. But sadly this aircraft has now gone back to Futura on 19th April.

What I always do is, always give myself plenty of time before departure, walking around the gates at HKG is really all we need for good spotting!

Yep, that's right! That is the official slogan for Visit Indonesia Year. I still can't get my head around this slogan - what does it mean? It does not excite nor inspire someone to explore Indonesia. Compare this to Uniquely Singapore, Malaysia Truly Asia (well is it????? ethnic discontent brewing), Amazing Thailand and Incredible India. I wished Pak Ngaso could have come up with a more creative slogan whilst eating his tempeh goreng and tahu pong behind his desk.

Thanks for sharing your TR on GA.

LOL ... I would have thought that was the perfect slogan actually... Japan-China...India-Pakistan...India-China...North Korea-South Korea...Taiwan-China...Burma...Tibet...Sri Lanka...Xinjiang...and so many more - Asia is more conflict, hatred and jealousy than harmony, and Malaysia is a microcosm of all this  Wink

Thanks for another nice trip report ThaiA345. I am surprised that GA use the B738 on its Hong Kong runs now. Is that the only flight of the day? They used to be able to fill a daily B744 between CGK and HKG.

I suspect that CGK- HKG is very underserved. CAL and CX uses A330/A340/777s on this sector and I suspect that Garuda is very short of widebodies now to perform this role properly. The would rather deploy their A330 on CGK-PVG as I think it brings in more yield for them compared to HKG (although high yielding as a destination too.).

I am sure their 777s will be used on this route once they receive them like,... God only knows when.

Well... every country will have their own way of doing things I suppose and Indonesia is no exception. BUT, that being said, I almost fell off my seat with I saw that slogan. It is so... what is the right word for it... JARRING? I do not feel any warmth from it and not inviting at all. There is also a sense of violent revolution with those words "National Awakening". Hahahaha... maybe it is just me.

Well, you have to admit though , it is a big word to use...and Pak Ngaso would like to show off his command of the English language, although he does not knwo what they actually mean! ahhaha

Quoting Airpearl (Reply 8):

Yup, it used to be done with B744 (still do during the Hari Raya Holidays) and also the A333, but now just the B738 on the usual daily runs. The flight I was on was an additional flight as it was peak travel to HKG as it was a long weekend in Indonesia.

1st one is scheduled for.......as you said it ..god knows when !!...late 2010 was the time GA was saying!

USD810 return in J. I would prefer CI as they use the new A333 on the CGK-HKG runs plus J is only USD700, but it was sold out, cathay charges almost USD2000 for the HKG route and it too was sold out, MH was around 800 but I will lose almost a day connecting in KL.
