I often fly from Toronto to Budapest, Hungary to see my family. I usually fly with Malév Hungarian Airlines as they are the only airline to offer direct service to Budapest from Toronto. Unfortunately Malév halted its flights to Toronto during the winter season and will only resume them on May 27th with 5x weekly service.

I looked at prices from Air Canada/Lufthansa, British Airways, LOT, Austrian, KLM-Air France, Delta and American Airlines. KLM offered the best deal and had good connection times to catch my flight to Budapest from AMS, so I decided to buy it. I was happy because the AMS-BUD flight was codeshared with Malév and the transatlantic KLM flight was operated by a B777, this will be my first time flying on a B777 and on a B737NG!

I checked-in online from home and choose a window seat for my flight to Amsterdam. Security at YYZ was very thorough but quick. I arrived at gate C34 almost 90 minutes before boarding.

I was one of the last ones to board as I was sitting in 17J. The Captain informed us that we were ready for departure but would have to wait until our slot time. We taxied to rwy 24R and took off after a LH A340-600.

I was very surprised at how quite the 777 and its GE 90 engines were during take off. We climbed initially to FL 350. I was very impressed by KLM’s IFE, not only does it have a massive selection of TV shows and movies but it has thousands of CD’s so everyone can listen to something they actually like! I can’t complain about the food either, very reasonable portions of high quality food aboard both transatlantic flights.

Connecting in Amsterdam was a breeze. The long line at passport control moved very quickly so I arrived at gate C06 with plenty of time to spare.

Malév’s HA-LOM, a Boeing 737-8Q8 pulled up to the gate . LOM has a white nose and“Livingstone” titles because she is often wet-leased for charter flight to Italy.

I noticed some activity near the right main gear that didn’t look very encouraging. A few minutes later an announcement was made stating that the aircraft had a flat tire and it would take 30mintues to fix it, the flight was delayed till 11:00am. Just before the revised departure time a further delay was announced. Apparently a new tire had to be flown in from BUD on the next departing flight which I didn’t understand as KLM must have had some spare 737 tires in AMS. Passengers with connecting flights in Budapest were rebooked on another Malév flight that departed at 12:20, MA has 5 daily flight to Amsterdam. I was rebooked on MA 665 that departed at 14:45 and was given a 5 euro refreshment voucher.

We pushed back on time and took off from RWY 36C. The flight to Budapest went by very quick. The weather started to worsen over Slovakia were we started to descend towards Budapest

The landing was smooth but afterwards the pilots obviously had a difficult time stopping the 737 on the wet runway. As you can see in the video, the engines kicked up a fair bit of water.

I arrived to Ferihegy 2A at around 7:30am and checked-in. I asked for a window seat on both flights. Budapest Ferihegy airport will be undergoing a massive redevelopment and will be adding a large “airport city” including 16 new airbridges, cargo facilities and a shopping complex, construction is already underway. Hungary as also recently entered the Schengen zone so the entire airport has been reorganized to allow for added security and customs precautions in terminal 2B and transferring passengers. Boarding was slightly delayed but we still managed to pushback on time.

I was luck as no one sat beside me on this new generation 737. I found the seat pitch and leg room to be very generous and the leather seats to be comfortable

Long are the days when you use to get a nice tray of selected cold cuts on all MA flights. I guess you can’t expect much on a 1 ½ hour flight. And yes, they were on time. In fact Malév is one of the most punctual airlines in Europe when it comes to short to medium haul flights. http://www.malev.hu/BP/ENG/I_NEWS_ENG/2008-0505-1619-03CNVM.asp

Connecting to my flight to Toronto was very easy and I ended up with 2 hours to wonder around Schiphol. I did some duty free shopping and headed to gate G09 to meet the B777 that will be taking me home.

We had a relatively short flight time to Toronto and arrived there almost 30min before schedule. Service aboard was great and I again took full advantage of the fantastic IFE by watching Superbad and a few Simpson’s episodes. The lunch service was again high-quality and very filling. Drinks were served 3 times during the flight in addition to ice cream and water and a light snack before landing in Toronto.

This B767 is the dirtiest Air Canada plane I have ever seen.

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/1803/yyz4cb0.jpg

Conclusion.

I had a great experience on KLM and would highly recommend Schiphol Airport if you need to connect in Europe to another flight. The service aboard was more than satisfactory and the crew was polite and professional. Even the ground staff in Schiphol was very helpful. The B777 is a massive improvement from the B767 that I usually take across the Atlantic. Its wide and quite cabin and comfortable seating makes a long flight much more bearable. I am somewhat disappointed that KLM put 3-4-3 seating into its new B777-300ERs after enjoying the 3-3-3 arrangement in the –200ERs.

I can’t complain about Malév either. Although I was somewhat surprised by the sad little sandwich they serve, they at least still offer free alcoholic drinks on their short-haul routes.

Thanks,

KrisYYZ

I have never flown KLM or been to AMS Schiphol Airport before, so your TR gave a good impression of both. I lived in Houston from 1980-86 and I remember KLM flying 747-200's or 747-300's out of IAH to AMS. Now I live just outside NRT and I see their 777-200ER's at NRT. Prior to that they used to fly 747-400's. I've seen them at many different airports like BKK, KIX, HKG. In the states I see them at ORD, LAX and now they fly to DFW using A330's.

Have you kissed a 777 today?

Nice report and pictures, thanks.

Looks like Malev provide pretty decent service, nice to get a 736 flight too, still missing one of those!

Hi,

Great report of KLM and Malev. Service seems of a really good level, something you hear more often about KL.
Also to read about Malev is nice, as this airline is less covered here on a.net.
You also made very nice pictures!

Thanks for sharing and Brgds,

Great report!

Want to earn some money? Based on EU regulations you should be compensated for not being able to board the original AMS-BUD flight in Amsterdam. You're right that a spare tire should have been available in Amsterdam.

Based on a claim calculator you could receive EUR 250 in compensation. euclaim.nl have a claim service, they can help you with it (I'm not associated with this company. I'm mentioning it because it seems to be the only company out there who will help people with complicated claims based on EU regulation).

Kris,

Excellent read and I loved the landing video of the BUD-AMS flight especially, as it passed my place of birth: Aalsmeer, where you can see many greenhouses and, actually, flew over the biggest flower-auction in the world  Smile

Landing was on 36R at AMS, for your information...

Glad you enjoyed the trans-atlantic trip to Hungary via Amsterdam; Schiphol is, indeed, a great airport for transit connections  Smile
