This trip was a bit of a surprise to me. My wife Amy has decided to be a gestational surrogate, one who grows a baby for a couple who can't otherwise have children. We have been going through an agency in Los Angeles, and we knew that they would have to initially fly us down a couple of times from our home, about 35-40 minutes north of Fresno, California. However, the first time we were getting ready to go down, for our interviews & medical screenings, the cost of flights from Fresno was about $950 per person (you're in the air like 45 minutes for crying out loud!!!!). Because of this, they reimbursed us for car mileage and my extra time away from work. It was a pretty tough trip though, more driving than I care to do over a 2-day period.

I was expecting the same thing this time, on our trip down to meet the prospective parents. However, we got a nice surprise when they sent us an e-mail saying that flight details were coming. Woo hoo!!!

We were booked on a US Airways flight out of FAT to LAX, via LAS. I got a kick out of the fact that if we arrived at FAT 1 1/2 hours before departure, then getting there would take over 6 hours including the stopover. We can drive it in 4 hours! I will not complain though, as I'd not been in a plane since September of 2007. Rather funny that this surprise fell when it did, as I'm also preparing to fly back home to Toronto late this month. 2 return flights over 2 weeks! Awesome!!! I never had 2 trips within so little time even back when I had money. I was really looking forward to taking photos now that I've learned how to set my DSLR to take the best quality photos. So if I have too many photos, I apologize.

This flight would be the first time that my wife & I have flown without our son (since he was born, anyway). He's 2 1/2, and a real ball of energy - he's gotten pretty tough to take on a plane. So at the same time thinking about how we're going to miss leaving him for 36 hours (longer than we've ever been away from him), we also looked forward to air travel without the stress of getting a toddler & car seat through security, and trying to keep him occupied onboard the plane.

The day arrived, and we dropped our son off with his Grandma. We headed straight towards Fresno from Oakhurst (50 minutes north of Fresno on Highway 41), and stopped for a leisurely lunch since we were over 3 hours early.

There was no lineup at the US Airways counter, and were checked in with no problems. We had no bags to check, just my camera bag, Amy's shoulder bag and a small duffel bag with a change of clothes going as carry-on.

Going through security took about 15 minutes, as only one lane was open. We then strolled toward the main part of the terminal, past this SkyWest EMB-120 (taken through Venetian blinds).

Fresno is a fairly quiet airport, but very modern looking. We took a seat over by Gate 16, where I could sit and watch planes from and Amy could read.

Very little traffic came and went for an hour, but then it came fast and furious over the course of 30 minutes with the arrival of 2 US Marine Corps F/A-18D's, a United Express CR7 & EMB-120, and an ExpressJet EMB-145 (not all pictured).

Our flight then arrived on time, a former America West Airbus A319.

We sat down in row 21, seats A & B. I grabbed the window, as I usually do. I'm not being unfair to Amy, as she usually prefers to sit and read on flights, and I enjoy snapping photos.

We departed the gate on time and pushed back. As we were taxiing to the runway, so were the 2 F/A-18D's. They beat us, so as we pulled up to the runway, I was able to get a good shot of the 2 fighters lined up and ready to go.

When they hit the throttle, man what a roar! I'd never been that close to fighter jets taking off.

Shortly after, we taxied into position and hit the gas ourselves.

I didn't notice until after I took this, but notice the Mooney(?) that had just departed from a parallel runway.

We climbed out over Fresno and turned northeast to cross the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

It was great to see snow-capped mountains after a week of temperatures between 90 & 100! Does it get any better than this?

We finished the mountain crossing and turned southeast over the high desert toward Las Vegas. The drink service began, and I had a Sprite.

It didn't take too long until we were descending into the Las Vegas area. Then, the bumps began. Everyone was holding on for dear life! Luckily the flight attendants were already fastened into their seats.

With my wife on the verge of yakking (even though there was no airsickness bag in her seat pocket), I of course kept snapping pictures as we flew downwind for Runway 25L. I thought to myself if any turn out, it will be a miracle. But I was able to keep the shutter speed high enough that they turned out fine!

The landing was surprisingly smooth considering the bumpy approach. We taxied to our gate and got off the plane to enjoy our 3.5 hour layover. Fun!

Amy spent the layover sitting at the gate reading, while I walked around and took pictures. I was glad that I was able to take so many good photos, even with tinted glass. A little bit of color balancing in Photoshop works wonders!

The US Airways Arizona aircraft came in while I was on the other side of the airport, and I was sad I couldn't get anything better than a far-off backlit picture. However, it was to be turned around quick, so Amy & I walked over there to wait for it to leave. The whole time I could swear that a gate agent was watching me from the other side of the terminal...maybe she thought it was suspicious having a guy with a camera sitting looking out the window? Well, whatever...nothing happened anyway. Got the shots!

After that, we walked back to our own gate, and as we passed another gate, we noticed a few agents pointing their cell phones out the window. They were taking pictures of...

Whoops! Something happened during pushback of this flight to Phoenix, and the nose gear had locked into a 90 degree angle, just like the famous JetBlue emergency landing at LAX. We watched for a few minutes and then went back to our gate.

Apparently, mechanics were able to get the nose wheel back in place, but they just pulled back to the gate and offloaded. Poor folks! They were told to stay around the gate while the aircraft was checked out, and drinks were brought for the stranded passengers.

The aircraft we were supposed to take to LAX was late coming in, but finally arrived.

It seemed to take an awful long time to turn this aircraft around, but we finally boarded.

Amy and I had originally been booked both in middle seats, but a day before we noticed 2 seats next to each other had opened up. However, now the plane was completely full.

The plane with the nose gear problem was next to us, and I saw some window shades pop up, so I guess the plane was cleared to fly and was boarding as we pushed back.

We taxied out, and without any delay at all, rolled straight out onto the runway.

After 5 minutes of just sitting there, the plane powered up, and taxied off the runway.

The captain came over the PA and announced that our flight was asked to hold for spacing. A few minutes after that, we powered up again, turned, and taxied straight onto the runway and immediately took off.

Now that the sun had set, there was far less turbulence than inbound. I enjoyed the dusk photos, especially as I saw the one-day-away-from-full moon up there and looking great.

I didn't know that they don't do a beverage service between LAS & LAX because of the short duration of the flight. I suppose it would take too long on a fully loaded A320. We were only in the air for about 25 minutes before starting to descend into the Los Angeles area.

I snapped a ton of photos, not knowing if any turned out - I figured, if they turn out, they'll be freakin' AWESOME, if not, so what? Here's what I got on descent.

We landed smoothly on Runway 24R, and had to taxi all the way back to Terminal 1, on the other side of the airport. All in all, we had arrived almost 1 hour late. The entire process, from arriving at Fresno to getting off the place in Los Angeles took 8.5 hours.

We left the airport and headed over to the Encounters Restaurant, where we had reservations for dinner. Even though we were late, it wasn't a problem getting us seated, although we were the last people there when we left. The view was cool, even though the arches of the Theme Building were covered in scaffolding.

From there, we walked over to Terminal 6 to catch our shuttle to the Sheraton Gateway hotel. It was an absolute madhouse at the shuttle stop where we were waiting - cars crossing the center area from Terminal 2 to 6 kept merging into the lanes going all around the airport, and then cars were trying to merge in and out of the terminal side lanes into the outer lanes - so it was a total automotive free-for-all. We got headaches from all the exhaust and horn honking. We waited about 25 minutes in total for our shuttle. Turns out we could have walked to the hotel quicker.

Finally got checked in and settled into our room.

We zoned out watching TV until about 11:30. We watched part of a Star Wars parody done by Family Guy (bizarre!), but couldn't stay up late enough to watch the rest.

We woke up the next morning and ordered a room service breakfast. All the time I was watching aircraft coming in to land on 24R and snapping pictures, but the lighting wasn't great and the window wasn't clean.

We caught a cab for our meeting later that morning. When leaving our floor, we walked over to the window for this shot:

It went great! We got to meet the intended parents and all went well. We headed back to the hotel quite happy, but quite early - we got back there at about 1:30 pm, with our flight home not scheduled to leave for another 7 hours. I convinced Amy to take a walk with me out to the ol' In-n-Out spotters park, and we spent an enjoyable 2 1/2 hours there. The weather was beautiful!

We decided to head back at about 4:30, and walked to our hotel, picked up our bag, and caught the shuttle to the airport. The shuttle ride took all of 2 minutes. I walked out to the terminal overlook area, which is the stretch of sidewalk between the terminals on the arrivals level, where you can get a neat view of the parked traffic.

I would have walked all around the airport doing this, but I was rather tired and wanting to sit down for awhile. We checked in using a kiosk and headed to security. There were no lineups to get through, but as we approached the checkpoint, a bunch of agents started yelling something (not sure what they said), and everything froze. Agents stepped forward to block the X-ray scanners, and no one was allowed to move. All the passengers were looking around with "WHAT TH'?" expressions. A few minutes later, someone yelled "CLEAR," and things started moving again. Nothing was said about this. One of the people ahead of us seemed really distressed about the whole thing - she was white as a ghost!

Anyway, we were through security 2 minutes later and we proceeded to find a nice place to sit, towards the end of the terminal where I could watch the action.

I was fairly tired so I didn't do much photographing for an hour and a half. But that changed when Southwest's Maryland One taxied in. I missed the shot of it arriving, but moved over to the gate where it had parked to wait for it to leave. About that time, we also saw smoke outside the terminal; it looked like it was coming from a bus parking lot towards the northeast side of the airport.

The fire was put out quickly by an armada of arriving fire trucks. Now that lighting was good, I went back to snapping photos again.

Then Maryland One pushed back. Beautiful!

We finally headed to our departure gate for the last half hour before boarding. Our plane was already there, and I wasn't able to, at LAX or LAS, find out the registration.

10 minutes late, boarding began. However, the flight was only about 30% full, so boarding took 10 minutes. My seat had a window shade that was stuck in the halfway position, so we moved to the row behind us, which was empty.

We pushed back 5 minutes before scheduled departure. The taxi was quick, and we took off and headed a fair distance over the ocean before starting a 180 degree turn to the left. As before, I snapped a ton of photos hoping they'd turn out, and luckily, some did! Notice the full moon that night.

We moved over into one of the empty rows on the left side of the plane for the approach into LAS. None of my shots of the strip turned out really good, but here's the closest:

And here are some better photos of the arrival.

We pulled into the gate and deplaned. We had about 2 hours to kill until our next flight departed, so we went and got dinner from a sandwich shop. The central area, between the A & B gates looks so cool at night!

We headed back to the gate, packed with people on a delayed flight to Phoenix, one to Salt Lake City and a full flight to Orlando. Our gate was changed, and finally it was time to board the CR9, my first flight in that type. We boarded using the airstairs after walking out over the tarmac in the still-warm air.

The flight was almost full, and left on time. Unfortunately, it was too dark to get any shots of this leg, and it didn't help that the window wasn't in very good shape. Ah well, I was too tired to care at that point - I just wanted to get home.

We arrived at the runway, and after 3 aircraft took off in short order, so did we. We climbed out and I got a great view of the Las Vegas strip, and it was cool to just enjoy the view instead of trying to photograph it.

We crossed the mountains, and just about everyone on the plane was sleeping - the drink service went quickly. I had a Coke for the caffeine - we still had a 45 minute drive ahead of us after landing.

Ours was the last flight into Fresno that night, arriving at 1am. It was eerie seeing the large terminal completely empty.

We got back out to our car, paid our parking fee, and drove home. It was hard keeping focused on driving - it had been such a long day and I was drowsy.

Anyway, got home at about 2 am, and was at work 7 hours later.

All in all, a real whirlwind trip - kinda funny that airport to airport, it was a 37 hour trip, but we only really needed to be there for our meeting, which was 2 1/2 hours in total.

As for the flights, I have no real complaints. The aircraft were in good condition with the exception of the broken window shade, and the crews varied from being quite friendly to 'let's just get the job done.'

Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoyed the photos. They are probably among my favorite batch of flight-related photos that I've taken.

The End!

fantastic photos and report. sounds like it was a much more interesting and exciting trip than by car. i swear there is nothing more depressing than driving down the highway on a long trip and looking up to see contrails overhead. i hope you have the opportunity to fly a lot more in the future and keep the great pictures coming.

Yes, I arrived from Fresno right around there. Our A319 (the only one we traveled in) was an ex-AW bird, with fabric seats branded with the America West logo. What time were you there? I might have a photograph of your plane if you know the reg.

Thanks! I shoot with a Nikon D40x, a great DSLR at a good price. The only problem was that the default settings result in photos that are much to contrasty & saturated in my opinion. Once I set the camera to soften the photos automatically, I became really happy with the result. The photos only received basic edits - sharpening, resizing & levels only if absolutely necessary. Wasn't in the mood to spend 8 hours for a trip report. Big grin

They have the authority to use some of the C Gates if they need to just like WN has authority to use B Gates but really, US doesn't even use the gates they got now since their hub is in a decline.

Yes, I did notice that construction - actually that construction really messed me up at first, the last time I flew out of Las Vegas, it was through that area (pre-construction). Because half of the terminal was now blocked, I thought I was somewhere else and ended up totally confused until I looked at a map.

Thank you for the compliments! I haven't uploaded any to the database, as I haven't had anything accepted in quite a while...although the last time I tried was before the DSLR. To those who know better than me - do any of these stand a chance? I would love to try some uploads although I just plain don't have the time to do it unless I'm relatively sure they'll be accepted. They all came from full-res 10mp shots.

You know I wasn't much impressed when I passed through there last September, but it was dark, and I had the little guy with me (try keeping a 2 year old away from the bright flashing lights and funny sounds coming from the slot machines, but they got pissed off whenever he walked within 30 feet!), but it looked better in the light of day.

I think LAS is a stop on a number of flights US Airways operates from the east coast. I know the plane from LAX-LAS was headed to Philadelphia after that on the same flight number.

Actually the LAX-LAS aircraft was in the new colors, and N122US was the one we had taken the day before - still in the old colors. It would be good to know what it was for my log, but jetways and solid walls blocked any hope of finding out which plane it was. Oh well!

The agency we're going with does all of its flight bookings through a travel agent, and they had brought up the ONT flight the last time we had gone down there. I was surprised that they booked us to LAX to be honest. Probably because it's far more convenient to the office. If it's any consolation for ExpressJet, the plane that I photographed both arrived and left 100% full.

They can be quite anal when it comes to kiddies near slots in Nevada (they afraid hes gonna hit Megabucks or something? lol  Smile ). From my readings and observations it seems they tried to bring elements and accouterments from the "D" gates into the old architecture of the A/B gates. They did decently it looks, but missed the "increased natural light" part.

Nice to see a trip report where the vast majority of pictures were taken outside the window, as opposed to most of thoe reports these days that seem to spend an inordinate amount of time on what the salad dressing was or whether the plates were styrofoam or plastic.

Your LAS photos, both in the air and on the ground are especially good.....and yes, the In-N-Out on Sepulveda is a great place to enjoy two of life's simpler pleasures.

True, and I certainly understand why...it's just an airport is boring for most adults, and more so for kids! They won't reasonably be able to just sit there for hours, they'll find something interesting and gravitate towards it. If they want them to stay far away from the slot machines, it stands to reason that something else be made available for them to do. Even little Fresno airport has a small kids play area (it kept his attention for 45 minutes). Maybe a kiddie casino with toy slot machines and such.....wow, do you hear thunder?  Smile

As someone who has gotten used to domestic US economy air travel, I can respond by saying: Salad dressing? Plates?? Whaaa???
