Hello to everyone that reads this....
I accidently stumbled along this area of the forum and had a look at a few of the articles and was quite intrigued and found many memories flooding back so here i am now sharing my flight with you (not so good memories ) This is from September 12th-24th 1998........
It all started when we first set our eyes on a 'Spanair MD-83' the thoughts that went through my head i dont think would be appropriate to express on here
The morning came and instead of being excited and optimistic about what was happening, i wasnt too keen on flying but knew it was something i wasnt gonna get out of! We got too the airport at around 22:00 as our flight was at 00:30 and it sayed straight away that the flight was gonna be alittle but late and there were alot of moans and groans but then i discovered a burger bar and i forgot all about it once i was enhance with a quarter pounder, large chips and a coke, umm yumyum!
Well anyway, back to this flight...the plane eventually landing just 8mins late and with excellent ground staff they managed to turn the plane around on time for its trip back to Tenerife! We went through the departure lounge through a number of tunnels and exits until we can to the tarmac and there she was, stood elegantly with the engines whispering in the wind, although these aircrafts were pretty old she was kept very clean
Upon boarding the plane i felt more re-assured that this flight was going to be a positive one because the air stewardess made my eyes pop out of my head and i had a 4hr flight still ahead of me, and i thought 'hey wait a minute, im actually getting to enjoy this'
We found our seats, right over the wing (how nice) but was alittle disappointed by the little leg room that i had, and besides im just 5' 8" (Jeremy Clarkson, Stay well away!) We had abit of a bumpy taxi to the runway but i was intrigued by all the lighting outside of the window and i could also see the beginning of the runway and the 'CAT II' markers, and being an aviation enthusiast i was loving every minute of it, although i would maybe change the MD-83 to an A330
The pilot turned and tidied up on the runway and we lay still, restless just the faint buzzing of the engines around your feet, and the distant beeps of the 'Seat Belt' sign trigured my imagination! Seconds later we were off, first rolling, then sprinting until we lifted of the runway into the night sky, heading out over 'Barry Island' and over the sea. That was the most exciting past of the journey out but the journey back was quite spectacular and it gave me a whole different view about this well known spanish airline......
We got on the plane at sunset at 'Reine Sofia' airport in the south of Tenerife and all expectations were high because conditions were clear, there was no wind and the airport was much more quieter than what it was when we first arrived! I noticed that the same air stewardess was on the plane as the journey over and i was in my isles! Our taxi to the runway was nice and smooth and i felt more at ease than i did on the flight out, so i sat back relaxed and took in the last glances of Tenerife before i was wisked back home to the Uk. We got onto the runway and there was no hesitation, we were rolling straight away and before we knew it the gorgeous island of Tenerife was gone from sight!
We flew over various islands, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria before the pilot turned to head north back to the grey clouds and rain of Britain....
The cruise was excellent, service was amazing and i had no hate towards this airline at all, i even bought my aircraft model which i was chuffed with.
Over france the moon become red and mysterious and i started to get the feeling of discomfort, and then when we got below cloud level it was raining and the wind was hitting the plane from all angles. The pilot notified us that was were about 15mins from landing into Cardiff so everyone strapped up and chatted amongst themselves. In this time the air hostesses came around with sweets, 'Dime' bars were issued to everyone who wanted them eventhought it stops your ears from popping it ruins your teeth..but they dont care and neither did i. My window filled up with rain and i was finding it hard to see outside, the flaps were into place and spoilers were well underway! We gotta closer and closer and the final element was put into place, the landing gear came down and we were onto our approach into Cardiff. I knew it would be the best of landings with the weather and the plane seemed as though the pilot was struggling with it to keep it under control. More corrections were made and we began to get lower, flaps were changed yet again and then out of no-where i could see strips of lights along the floor, we were above the runway but we didnt seem to be going down! As everyone looked out of the window, the pilot put the plane down with an almighty thud! Everyone left there seats it was so powerful, people started crying and silent whispers became shouts! I will never forget that flight and i hope that people who read this have enjoyed it because ive enjoyed writing it...god bless and take care!

Read my report from last year, NCL-PMI-NCL on Spanair MD83! Another hard landing, (hard being an understatement).
A good landing is one which you can walk off the plane.
A great landing is one in which they can use the plane again
When you hear the noise of the Tartan Army Boys, we'll be coming down the road!
