June 30th 2008
KHI – SIN
SQ460
ETD 1535
ETA 1945
Flight time 6:00
This is my first TR, so be nice all right? This’ll be a photo heavy one, since I’m not a fan of much writing
My second trip to Karachi in 6 months, the last time I went there was in December. If some people might remember that was at the time when the ex-PM Benazir Bhutto was killed, so effectively I was stuck at my hotel for 2 nights. Then, I was flying with TG. I did try moving the date earlier, but the flight ended up getting cancelled. Anyway, that’s then, and this is now.
This was a last minute decision, and I booked my flights on the 29th for travel on the 30th. We ended up using SQ miles to book the flight. The reason to go there? To eat, eat and eat some more. Pakistan has some of the finest (in terms of flavours, not hygiene) eateries, and those flavours can’t be recreated outside of the country. Trust me, I’ve experience in finding good food in a multitude of countries and nothing can match the flavours from back in Pakistan.
We left our car in Changi’s 2B parking, since it was only a 2 day trip. Checked in and got the seats 47K, basically the 3 seats on the starboard side of row 47. Unfortunately, I forgot to check when I was reserving the seats that the seats were over a wing. Damn. Ah well not to worry.
Boarding was pretty quick, and the flight consisted of: 10% ‘foreigners’, and 90% Pakistanis, of which there was an equal mix of Pakistanis that lived abroad (Like myself) and others that were returning home after a holiday from the chaos.
The flight took off, with a 10 minute delay, but made up for it on the way. The crew was friendly, like all SQ crew is. The food, was either a choice between:
Murgh Makhani
Beef Goulash
I had the Goulash, and I must say that I loved the mash and vinaigrette. The beef was substandard, and slightly undercooked. The dessert was an ice cream, which was pretty nice. I am seeing however that SQ has taken away the Walls Magnum, and replaced with it a local brand, Kings. Cost cutting is rife in the airline industry.
Obligatory leg photo Note the A310 of the UN Flying over Malaysia The remnants of my Beef Goulash. Flying over India
Something that really irked me in the flight was the lack of AVOD on this bird. I started watching 21, which I have to conclude, was a nice movie but slightly predictable at times, but after finishing the movie I realized that everything was running in a loop, like the pre AVOD era. We certainly have been spoilt by the vast offerings in IFE. I ended up catching Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares about a curry house in Nottingham. Interesting.
Time passed by slowly, I ended up creating my own IFE by watching Top Gear on my macbook (bless their long lasting batteries!).
Landing was swift, and straight in from India and Hyderabad. Barely any turns, and not like I like it. I like a landing to be full of manoeuvres.
Somewhere over Hyderabad, descending to land. As you can see, a lot of haze, basically pollution from the nearby industrial city of KHI. PIA’s personal graveyard of aircraft. A bit like the Mojave desert right?

Thanks for posting this report. It brought back vivid memories of my 2 years living in KHI. Those pictures of the Quaid e Azam Airport and the city certainly brought me back in time.
I'm quite amazed that nothing much has changed since I left in 2001...esp those yellow top cabs and beautifully decorated buses!
Was this picture taken just 5 min out of the airport in the direction of the city?

Quoting QantasA333 (Reply 1): Great first report! Though you repeated yourself with the AVOD, IFE and landing part. Besides that excellent.
I noticed a Subway in one of your pictures above... it looked abandoned! Was there anything inside?
Thank you! I think instead of cutting, I copied.
That Subway was still under construction, so it does look a bit abandoned.

The city has been changing! Newer better roads have cropped up some places, and some roads have been dug up, as is typical of the KMC to do so. But yes, there have been minor cosmetic changes to this big city.

Excellent TR , Pakistan looks completley like India, and I continue to wonder how to extremists distinguish Pakistan and India

Actually they went from Hagan Daz, to Ben and Jerry's to Magnum and now Kings? Shit, this seems to be a bad move from SQ, not a premium ice-cream yet we are paying premium prices

I never knew SQ ever served B&J in Y...thought that has always been exclusive to business class?
All the above mentioned ice-creams are still being served on SQ, but not necessarily out of SIN. Different stations cater different types/brands of ice-cream for Y class. But you may be right that cost cutting is more apparent out of SIN.
In any case, the premium price that you pay on SQ is not solely for ice creams In fact, airlines cater ice cream because it costs less than the usual dessert from the caterers...

My first thoughts as well. You could easily think some of these shots are in Mumbai.
It's sad to see SQ is dropping the quality of its ice cream (I had Hagen Daz when I flew w/ them in 2004), but if they are dropping relatively minuscule things like that it can't be too bad. Have they cut amenity kits in Y?

Thanks. I can't say I agree, because the last time I was in Bombay, I was 6. I'd love to go again.

They serve NZ Natural out of Auckland, which is arguably premium. I don't know if they still do
Quoting BigTom (Reply 7): Nice report mate, not like a first-timer at all
Thanks
Quoting Nimish (Reply 5): Hey - we want pictures of the food in KHI as well - given that was the main purpose of your trip !
Quoting BigTom (Reply 7): Now where are the food pics ??
Now now, we go to EAT, the last thing on my mind while I was gorging down those ravishing meals, was to take photos. There are a few down there tho.
Quoting N867DA (Reply 8): Have they cut amenity kits in Y?
They have them on the night flights.
Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 8): Nice report and pictures, this is a little reported route here on A.NET.
Thanks
I believe that they have the same 'mithai wala' (sweetshop) in Bombay:
Not that I would recommend eating from here, unless you want a bad case of diarrhea:
Sweetshop:
Fruit stalls, being mango season, they're full of mangoes, and other lovely fruit:
The best hunter beef (corned beef) burgers in town, or quite possibly the world:
Karachi's famous, Karachi Haleem:
Dahi Bara stall:
Katori / Matka kheer (absolutely scrumptious):

There used to be a burger take-away joint located by the roadside near Defense 5? I wonder if that's the same Hunter Burger chain that you showed in one of the pictures. Those were really really juicy burgers! Excellent for late night supper!
I really miss mango season in Karachi... there are just so many different types of mangoes available in Pakistan, and absolutely the sweetest I've ever had. Love those mango shakes served in the little cafe joints next to the beach (I forget the name) beside the residential estate that I used to stay in (Defense 5).

Pakistani food in Dubai, is not even an accurate indicator of food from Karachi. Although, in any country one has to know where to look

Yeah, I think Hanifia's have a bit of monopoly, I've not seen another shop like it. IIRC there was a shop in Defense Phase 5, at Khayban - e - Rahat.

Great report! They do still serve B&J in Y, jusy had it on a recent LAX-NRT run, and got Hagen Dazs on the way back.
Do SQ crew have an overnight layover in KHI? I would imagine that a 6 hour turnaround flight would be quite long to do!

The flight operates SIN - KHI - LHE - SIN under SQ460. The crew doing the SIN-KHI-LHE route have a layover in LHE.
The crew that served me for SIN-KHI was serving me for LHE-SIN too, since I went back on the next flight.

I am quite sure I have seen Hagan Daz on the Singapore - Delhi route, and my last flight had a B&J stick Strawberry Garcia Ice-cream. On Delhi - Singapore it is always Rasmali or something like that and even after being a very profitable route for SQ, I really don't want to be eating Kings ice-cream on my next flight (if ever actually)
Yes I do know that we do also pay for the amazing service and the ground handling but I think its the little thing which always stays in the customers mind
