TR3: (Part 4 of 4)
People to People: UA919 LHR-IAD+Pics (Part 4 of 4)
When we were heading to our hotel from Runnymede, we passed by Heathrow. Now, everybody knew that I loved airplanes and so everybody was going crazy alerting me about an airplane! Also, they started asking questions about our flight. Well, I knew UA operates out of Terminal 1, but the leader's info said we go out of Terminal 3!! He corrected me over the PA system on the bus. Well, I let it slip. Soon, came the morning of our flight.
In the lobby, the leader came down and said I was actually right!! In the end, one Mark was right and one Mark was wrong, so who's counting?
Alright, upon entering LHR, I spotted the first A380 from Emirates:
OK, so its a model. But soon, I would see a real one on the tarmac.
We went into the check-in hall in Terminal 1 and I started to take pictures of everything again !
Something that surprised me: There are Airline Flags right by their check-in entrance. The only place I've seen the flags are at the airline's HQ! Hmmm.......(no pics )
At the check-in area, we weren't able to check-in early, so all of us swapped Travel Journals and got each others contacts! Then, I started taking more pics!
I also saw one of the most updated Star Alliance stands @ LHR (the only one missing is EgyptAir ) So, I took a picture with it
After we were able to check-in, we went to the departure lounge and filled out our evaluations! But, I was able to fit in some spotting!!
Later, we were able to go to our gate. But, we got to the gate a little late and I wasn't able to take some pics of our bird from LHR .
As usual, I handed my letter to the FA. I learned that the crew was London-based! Soon, the same FA came saying that I couldn't have a sfety card because of security, but she gave me a B777 card with the reg. Oh well .
During taxi, I caught a glimpse of the SQ A380!!!!!!!! Sorry, again, no pics
As we took off, some people from our delegation was cheering for a take-off! No, it wasn't me. Some passengers saw them very annoying.
Soon, the made some announcement that almost nobody could understand. I thought she said that all drinks will be $6 or 3 pounds! I was surprised, but I soon found out that is only for the alcoholic drinks.
Since I really had to use the bathroom, I didn't notice that the seatbelt sign was still on and when I got to the bathroom, one of the FAs told me sharply to return to my seat . Kinda rude too!
When I was finally able to go to the bathroom, the first drink service skipped me!!!! I was kinda mad.
Soon, lunch came! I was very dissapointed with the main course. The mashed potatoes were really garlicky and the green stuff tasted bad with the chicken. I loved the salad and the bread is always good! Another drink service came and my can of Coke fell! The FA gladly gave me another. I guess the first drink service I missed fell on the ground.
While I was watching a movie on the PTV, I felt something near my foot! It was my Coke!!!! I hapilly picked it up and drunk it . Most of the time on the plane, we were passing around our travel journals within our delegation. So in the plane, you could see like 40 kids with their arms and books in the air passing them around. There were some (including mine) that got lost and I had to get up and look for em !
My People to People lanyard:
Soon, a snack box was given out and it had the BEST SANDWICH EVER!!!!!!! I LOVED IT! It was sooooo good!! I loved it!!!!!! I kept the box Soon, we were making our descent into IAD! I tried to go to Audio Channel 9 to listen to the ATC, but it was off .
Those same people that cheered for takeoff also cheered for a landong flare, with the same faces lighting up with annoyance.
On my way out, I had a short talk with the FA and I asked if I could get a safety card. She just told me to get it out of a seat pocket ! So, this was kinda ironic. A combination of taking pictures and traffic led to this little sequence:
I was:
-One of the first to de-board
-one of the last on the mobile cars
-First to deboard the mobile cars and go through customs
-Last through Agricultural
Our bird:
So, in the mobile cars, I had a chat with some FAs and did some more tarmac spotting:
We got out of there around 5 or 6! We were so happy that there were no seatbelts on the bus!!! We were cheering USA! when we got on our bus!
Star Alliance connections desk!!:
We arrived back in Chesapeake around quarter past 9pm! After grabbing some Taco Bell, i was home!
This TR is dedicated to all the Past, Present, and Future People to People Student Ambassadors! Cheers to Us! We travel to understand and to bridge the cultural divide for World Peace!
And to all those in the Tidewater Delegation of Virginia and North Carolina and the two grils from Chicago that joined us too!
I might make an extra part showing some of my best pics and stuff; IDK. So, tell me if you would like ot see that.
Again, Thanks for Reading and Post comments please !
Best Regards

Quoting Semsem (Reply 5): The lunch looked awful. United used to be a great airline, even on short US domestic flights service was great.
The lunch WAS awful!!
Quoting StarAlliance38 (Thread starter): The mashed potatoes were really garlicky and the green stuff tasted bad with the chicken.
The only thing on the main entree that I ate was the chicken and it was even dry.
But, I liked the salad and roll
I feel bad for parts 2 and 3. Somebody read and post comments on them !!

Great job on all your reports, I know that took a lot of time to put all those pics and comments in your posts.
It'll be an experience you'll never forget...I first traveled to Europe nearly 25 years ago and there are moments that stand out like it happened yesterday.

I guess you can. Now, a letter to an FA comes from the INSIDE of you. I just listed my experiences in a nice way! Right now, I'm too lazy to post the letter, but I will this afternoon!
Basically, just tell the FAs about how you love aviation and all that mushy stuff

Thanks for sharing the great series of trip reports! It sounds like you had a fantastic trip with People to People.
BTW, those mobile lounges at IAD sure are a wonderful way to see the airport!
Great job!
All nonstop flights are direct, but not all direct flights are nonstop!

G'day, great report - a real original style of writing too! I've always liked the idea of the IAD mobile lounges but do you find it ends up taking longer to get to the terminal than say...with a jetway?
How is this a security issue? I always thought they were reluctant to give them out because it cost the airline money everytime they had to print a new one...
