Hey all,

Well, back with another international TR. I really had no plans of being able to do much nonrev travel this summer - much less overseas - given the typical summer load factors. But, a unique opportunity presented itself that I just couldn't resist Big grin Anyhow, some of you may remember I posted a TR awhile back as "the captain's son" flying DTW-KIX on one of my dad's flights, can be found here:

Anyhow, at the end of June he told me he had a HKG at the end of July, which I was very surprised to hear since HKG is one of the most senior trips at NWA, and my dad is relatively junior on the blockholding 747-400 seniority list. I tried to not keep my hopes up considering NW's NRT-HKG-NRT flights tend to consistently go full, but the Nonrev God's finally decided to give me a break, and the trip eventually worked out!! Over the span of 6 days, the full itinerary ended up being:

DEN-MSP-NRT / NRT-HKG / HKG-NRT / NRT-PDX / PDX-EUG-DEN

I usually don't include anything of domestic flights in my TR's, but here's a note of interest to some. When I arrived bright & early for the NW 630a flight to MSP, I was very surprised to see an AA 763 sitting across the way in Concourse C at DEN. AA hasn't sent scheduled widebodies to DEN for years, so I asked why it was there. Apparantly a divert for mechanical reasons, that had to sit overnight. The plane was bound from HNL, either from ORD or DFW, I forget which.

So, once at MSP, I met up with a.nut KingAir200. We shot the bull for awhile, grabbed chinese food for lunch, and before too long it was time for NW19 to NRT to start boarding. As a lot of a.nuts can appreciate, I chose to fly to NRT from MSP since I didn't yet have that line on my FlightMemory page. I've tried to avoid MSP in the past though given the relative large numbers of must-ride nonrevs. Commuting 757 crews to NRT, WHQ personnel, etc.

My dad was flying NW11 from DTW that day, which is scheduled to get in 30 minutes after NW19 from MSP - which I was counting on, given possible customs delays or the like. Anyhow, before long I was given seat 11A on the main deck in World Business Class. On the NW 744's, I do love the top deck, but for taking pictures and videos, rows 11 and 12 are easily the best, with respect to view of engines and the wing.

After a 55 minute boarding process, the CS agents finally shut the door, and we were off to NRT.

After a relatively short taxi, we were ready for takeoff. I've experienced a few "rocket takeoffs" on 757's, 738's, and others which are really fun of course, but the ones I most look forward to are the heavy international ones with the long takeoff rolls. I love it!!

Immediately after takeoff, the FA's began preparing the dinner service. Menus, amenity kits, slippers, and all those other things were handed out on the ground, as well as having our meal orders taken on the ground. So, before long I brought out the PTV, having only being forced to watch that "Airobics" video. I wish that was optional, not seemingly mandatory.

I may be heavily biased, but the 747-400 is easily my favorite longhaul plane. Love that view!!

Dinner service was excellent. I chose to have:

Shrimp and scallops in a fragrant mild curry sauce with rice and vegetable mix

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of it, I always feel kinda weird taking pictures of my food on an airplane  Wink

After dinner, I hit the sack for near the rest of the flight. I'm lucky enough that I'm the type of person who could sleep through nuclear war, so fortunately for me sleeping 8-9 hours straight on an airplane comes quite easily.

So, after a brief 12 hour flight, we were on descent into Tokyo-Narita.

Landing was quite smooth, bravo to whoever was at the controls. As is typical with most NW international flights, we arrived quite early, 30-35 minutes. Customs was a piece of cake, clearing in maybe 5 minutes. The Japanese do everything so efficiently!!

While coach was near totally full, my mom, sister, and I were very lucky with the World Business Class load - just at 50% - very very rare for NW11 and NW12 to/from HKG.

Anyhow, my family and I enjoyed a great layover in Tokyo-Narita, going to all of the typical "crew hangouts":

My mom, sister, and myself took an earlier bus to the airport from the hotel than my dad, as we wanted to check in early. To our surprise, we were given top-deck World Business seats at check-in. Always a huge relief as a nonrev!! Anyhow, I knew one of my dad's best buddies at NWA was going to be captain on NW7 arriving into NRT from SEA just prior to our flight to HKG, so I made sure to take pictures of him being marshalled into the gate:

While we weren't allowed to board with the crew, the supervising gate agent did let myself and my family preboard so we could enjoy some extra time on the plane. I went to the cockpit right away, of course.

Once the boarding doors were shut, I gave my camera to my dad for the remainder of the flight, asking him to take a couple cool cockpit pictures. He didn't take as many as I was hoping, but he still got a few good ones.

Again, meal service was great, although a bit shorter and smaller than those on the Transpac flights. On all of NWA's "south" flights out of NRT, the meals are served on a single tray, while on the Transpac flights they are served in courses. So after a good dinner and a very long day in NRT, I got a few hours of sleep in the tail end of the flight to HKG.

While I won't bore you with a ton of details about my time in HKG, I will say it's one of the coolest cities I've ever seen. More high-rise buildings than just about anywhere in the world - HKG has to set some kind of record in that regard. While I'm an extreme amateur photographer, here are a few skyline pics I took the night before I had to leave again.

I arrived quite early at HKG for check-in... early enough that I had to stand in line with a few other early pax as the CS agents completed their briefings and set up their stations. Again, I was pleasantly surprised to be given a World Business Class seat immediately at check-in. I was given an aisle seat in the center, but requested a window in row 11 or 12, for reasons I discussed earlier  Wink

Since the FO flew the NRT-HKG leg, my dad was flying both the takeoff and landing on the HKG-NRT leg. The FO was very nice and offered to take a video of my dad's takeoff, from the cockpit. I asked if this would interfere with his duties at all, and he insisted that it was no problem whatsoever and he'd be happy to do it. Thanks a bunch!!!

Boarding went smoothly, and I was greeted by the same purser from our NRT-HKG flight, Patrick. Very nice guy!! I hung out in the cockpit awhile again, before going back downstairs to my seat 12A. The FO offered to take pictures and videos the entire flight, but I said I wanted to take a video of my dad's landing from my seat at 12A. He did do an AWESOME job with the takeoff video though, so bravo again to him!!

Climbout was a bit turbulent, but nothing major. The FA's handed out the breakfast menus and took our orders. Since I've had the NWA omelets a few times before (delicious, btw), I decided I'd try something new:

"Egg friend rice with chicken tomato sauce and chinese vegetables"

Man, that was a good choice too!! Having slept pretty good the night before, I stayed awake for the entire flight, making sure to take some pictures along the way.

So, after a fairly short flight, we were on descent into NRT, being met with quite a few strong bumps and thick clouds. I'm not sure if ATC was vectoring us around a lot, or if it's part of a STAR into NRT, but we were making quite a few turns.

We finally broke out of the fog (whew!!) and I got a good video of my dad's landing. On the previous flight of his I was on, NW69 DTW-KIX, he got a pretty rough landing in KIX. So, here was his major chance to redeem himself!! And, to his credit, he hit a near perfect landing in NRT - incredibly smooth.

After quite a long taxi-back to the gate, I was quite surprised when we shut down engines on what seemed like the top of the ramp. The FO then made a PA saying due to our parking gate and tight turns, we would have to be towed into the gate.

After landing, I was connecting immediately onto NW6 to PDX, while my dad was heading to the crew hotel. So, I said a quick goodbye and headed over to the security checkpoints for connecting flights.

While NW2 to LAX had a quite a few more seats on it than the near totally full NW6, I wanted to go visit some relatives who lived out in Oregon. Plus, NRT-PDX was also a new line on my FlightMemory page  Wink

In an odd twist, I ended up being the only NWA nonrev on NW6, ahead of approx 10 offline nonrevs. Since coach went totally full, they were all given World Business Class to my extreme surprise, since this is against official NWA nonrev policy. But, as they say, what are rules if you can't bend or break them. At least I had first choice of WBC seats though, and got 4A in the forward WBC cabin, just in front of the wing.

Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures of my plane from the terminal, since we were departing from one of those terrible gates that has no window views of your aircraft. Ughh!!

It had been quite awhile since i was on an NW A330, so I was secretly looking forward to this flight despite my eternal allegiance to Boeing!!

On the eastbound NRT-US flights, sunset sets in fairly soon after takeoff. I'm usually falling asleep by then, but I wanted to make sure I got a picture of the horizon before I turned out the lights.

Again, another great flight with very friendly FA's. I slept through the midflight snack (damn!!) all the way until breakfast. Descent into PDX was quite cloudy and with quite a bit of rain. We weren't able to see the ground until pretty low on descent.

On the three other flights I had previously just been on, all three had great landings. This landing though, was not quite up to par. We ended up hitting so hard that our plane bounced back into the air. The camera doesn't quite give the impact of our meteor of an airplane justice, as I guess I had quite a tight grip on it.

And with arriving in PDX, that concluded a fantastic and very memorable trip for me. I visited with my relatives for the day, but had to fly home the next day on UA, PDX-EUG-DEN.

Don't worry, I too secretly like NW's A330 planes. They are gorgeous to me.

I was in PDX (the city, not airport) July 29th but stayed right by PDX Airport.

Great pictures and videos! Always a thrill! I also try to book my routes based on what is empty on my flightmemory website haha, are we dorks or what?! Big grin

Great TR Matt, its about time you got off that 30 day ban. You're dad's job is really bad ass. I noticed on the HKG takeoff video, the controller seemed to have an Aussie accent, is that very common to have a foreigner working in ATC to avoid the language barrier?

Good thing you slept away the MSP-NRT flight, I don't think they're were enough good movies in the AVOD system to keep one occupied for all four flights, in the month of JUL, haha. AUG. looks good though, plenty of good ones. Should give me something to watch on the LHR flights, so I don't have to play bejeweled for hours, after trivia shits out.  Silly

Not much beyond what you hear on a.net. From various published materials (interviews, Q&A, etc) from the higher-ups, it seems the 744's will be around for quite some time after the merged NW/DL. They'll play an important role in the merged company. In a sense, there will be a widebody for every type of market imagineable. 744, 77L, 77E, 333, 332, 788, 764ER, 763ER, 75A

He was going to retire before the end of the year, but now with NW and DL merging that's on hold indefinitely. He figures he'll wait around and see what happens. A pay raise and a boost in seniority can change anyone's mind, haha.

I hear China is the absolute worst for crews. Very quick and sometimes incomprehensible ATC instructions on the radio. In addition to this, flight levels and altitudes are given in meters, and wind velocities are given in meters per second, not knots.

Your report is fantastic! I flew NW on a few transpac and NRT-HKG-NRT segments, and I have to comment how amazing it was. The seats were not all comfortable (especially on your venerable 744s)  Wink Oddly, perhaps the 330's seat design was more comfy. Nevertheless I found NW's transpac service to be really great, above UA's service.

Must be amazing to be on the same plane that your dad was captain. I would be filled with much pride too!

In coach, the A330 is definitely better than the 744. In World Business though, the A330 and 744 have identical seats. Same recline, width, AVOD, etc.

I'm more for allegiance to an Alliance, and its conditional love! hahahahaha Big grin
I was with Skyteam for a time, then switched over to Star Alliance. Snagged me an award from my United MP, and now i have none left. So l went to BA Executive Club (OneWorld). Actually, switching alliance allegiance was good . . . gave me more variety! I like that. Different aircraft types, better flight schedules in some, and more exotic routings in others.

July was ORD-CDG-DFW checkride, ORD-CDG-DFW checkride, and ORD-FRA-ORD. This month he's doing ORD-FCO-ORD twice and another ORD-CDG-DFW checkride. He did get back on S.
