First trip report here!
Well, I decided not to do a TR on my NW A330 flight MSP-HNL, so I saved my camera battery for the shorter flight, on a HA 717 doing HNL-OGG.
I'm sorry for the glare on some pictures from the window, it's really bugging me and I don't know if there is a way to get it off.
So, after an 8 hour flight from MSP, we [my family and I] headed toward the Interisland terminal. On the way there I saw Barack Obama's chartered North American 752 over at the FBO ramp.
I also saw a QantasLink Dash 8-400
After that quick stop for some pictures, we continued our trek to the interisland terminal. Right as we got there, I spotted some Aloha Airlines murals, so I got a picture of those, as I have a feeling they won't be around for long.
We ate at Burger King then went to gate 54, where our flight would be departing. I spent the wait for our flight taking pictures of airlines heading in and out of the interisland terminal, which was composed of Hawaiian Airlines, Island Air, go!, go!Express, Pacific Wings, Mokulele Airlines, Trans Air, and Corporate Air. Those photos will eventually be available on my website, www.freewebs.com/kregaxn. We boarded our plane, N484HA.
I got a pic of our neighbor, N477HA.
Then we started taxiing out.
Our Gate
Aloha Airlines B732, N835AL, a sad sight.
We passed N27318, a go! CRJ200 on our way to runway 8L.
I saw a North American 757 or 767 (couldn't tell) turning crosswind.
I was wondering who was on final approach as we were waiting for take-off and there was no one ahead of us...and this Memphis ANG C-5 Galaxy came roaring over us!
We took off over downtown Honolulu and off toward Maui.
Soon after departure we were served with delicious Passion Orange Guava.
The flight was going pretty fast, and soon Molokai started rollin' in.
And after that Maui and Lanai came into sight...
...followed by mountain on Maui.
There was a barge cruising off the coast of Maui and I managed to get a picture of it.
There's the road I'll be traveling on in about 45 minutes on my way to Lahaina!
And there is Molokai once again surrounded by clouds.
On approach to Kahului, a nice view of the coast.
Some cool turbines on a mountain in Maui.
Bad glare on this one! Farm plantations on final approach to OGG.
A lot of Gulfstreams and a Falcon!
A bunch of helicopters used for tours.
Island Air and Delta
The Bradley Pacific fuel truck!
Well, that was my flight! I know it's not that good of a TR, but it's my first one so I'll improve [I hope]!!
Any questions? Fire away!

Nice. I was just there and i miss it already. But it probably took longer for you to write this up than it did to actually fly from HNL-OGG, so thanks for that! hope you had a great trip, hawaii is the best!
I remember my first time in HNL, checking out the BK and seeing value meals just about hitting $10. I almost fell over!
Do you know if HA is still operating 767 on HNL-OGG at all? I'd love to get on one of those.
Anyways, nice TR and hope you enjoyed West Maui. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend flying Island Air out of JHM- totally wild ride. Aloha!

This might be a silly question, but...I don't have a great sense for Hawaii's geography. Are 717s utilized on these routes ETOPS certified? Or are the islands so close together (relatively) that such certification isn't necessary?

It looks like they are every once in a while (busy days/times). You can find 67 flights by looking for HA 1*** flight numbers.

Definitely not ETOPS. The islands are very close together, and the longest overwater portion is only about 20 minutes (oahu to kauai). Check out google eart, you'll see how close the islands are to each other.

did you leave on friday? the north american may have been obama plane departing. usually north american flies the 752's in here otherwise. great TR and love the pictures!
Quoting JpetekYXMD80 (Reply 8): How was the flight overall? What kind of BOB did they have?
Very nice flight, the F/As really helped give you a "hawaiian" feel by the music playing while boarding and deplaning, and the guava juice available onboard. Sorry, but what is BOB?

We were going to take WP HNL-JHM, but the times didn't work out

Thanks for the trip report, my Wife and I are flying this route this week. Looking forward to the trip, our first to Hawaii, first on Hawaiian and first on a 717.

The interisland flights don't have any Buy On Board because the flights are too short. There's barely enough time to hand out water or juice, then collect it before landing. On our transpacific flights, we offer free meals - usually a choice of a hot meal (chicken or pasta), or a turkey sandwich with chips. Water, soda, coffee and tea are free. Alcoholic beverages can be purchased.

Yes we are, at least through September, and probably into October as well. We won't have the first of our additional 717's online until that time. I'm on the 767, and have flown a few of these interisland trips. It sure is a change from the usual 5 (or 10) hour legs that I'm used to!
Quoting TWA757 (Reply 9): Are 717s utilized on these routes ETOPS certified? Or are the islands so close together (relatively) that such certification isn't necessary?
No they are not ETOPS certified. That is only required for flights more than 60 minutes from a suitable airport. On these flight you're not more than about 10 minutes from some place to land.

Send me a PM when you get back. I'd love to hear how your flights went and what you thought of our service.

Well I'm back home now, the NW TR just didn't work out. It was a very pleasent stay in the Hawaiian Islands, and I think I got enough shirts to last me for a year
The NW flight...long and boring for a teenager. Very smooth flight though, at times I wasn't quite sure if I was on a plane
Quoting JpetekYXMD80 (Reply 16): Buy-on-board....ridiculous as it may be for an 8 hour flight.
Well, since it's fresh in my mind, on the way back (HNL-MSP) I remember them coming through ONCE about 1/4th of the way there with food like Pringles, Wheat Thins, Twizzlers, etc (seperatly sold) for $3. And they came through twice for complimentary drinks.

Yeah sorry man, I'm one of those people who don't like extra attention, so I'm never too keen about standing up and snapping pics during the flight or waiting until everyone has deplaned and take pictures of everything.

i live in Lahaina, Lovely photos!! Hawaiian really is a great experience. I have flown go! a couple of times, and I can not stand waiting in the commuter terminal at HNL! Mokulele and there caravans also offer great service to west maui airport. Highly recommended for anyone possibly traveling in thefuture!
Ya know that is just wrong, flat out wrong on every level!!! A great little place to visit, but you actually live there, thanks for getting my jealous side up and running.
Quoting HAL (Reply 15): I'd love to hear how your flights went and what you thought of our service.
HAL each time I've had the pleasure of being a passenger on any HA flight, from the island flights to the pre B767s to mainland west coast, the service and experience has always been superb. Last flights were a day trip from HNL-KOA-HNL last May, much the same
friendly smiling hospitality. Just booked the next HA flight in March on the very same route as this report.....that is unless CO brings back the IAH-OGG non stop, then sorry to say unless we do some island hopping we won't have the pleasure of the HA experience on this trip!
