Hello A.netters,
Well, where do I start? Over the course of January, and February I was so busy booking flights for my Summer, and as well for my parents and brother, as I am the designated “family travel agent”! The following is a TR for one of my many yearly runs, which is usually NAS-MIA-ZRH with the AA and LX combo. Please enjoy the read, and feel free to leave comments!

I must sadly pre-warn you, that the quality of my photographs will not be top notch, due to the fact that I’m not much of a photographer, and that I’m using a Nikon Colorpix digital camera with no flash, as I don’t wish to be a nuisance to my fellow travelers. Even with this in mind, I still hope the details and details of the (some bad quality) pictures bring out the best for this TR!

Well, I wake up at 8 o’clock, so plenty of time for my 12:30 departure. I have a little breakfast, and spend about 20 minutes sitting on my patio with a coffee, just watching the planes on approach to NAS. Now I know you must feel sorry for me to be living right under the approach to an airport, however, I am after all an a.netter, and besides, with the amount and size of traffic that NAS sees (not that much), so I don’t really mind.

At about 10, I start packing the car, and head to the airport a mere 5 minutes away. The nice thing about living on the western part of the island, is that I get to drive past the runway 14/32 threshold, and occasionally, a plane lands right as we drive past, but sadly not today.

NAS has a truly limited number of shops, cafes, and restaurants. While there is the occasional duty free shop selling alcohol, and other goodies, there is only one cafeteria that probably isn’t half as good as the one back in high school. Truly a disgrace. http://i30.tinypic.com/206j4b8.jpg
About 30 minutes prior to departure time it was time to board my little bird to MIA.

It still surprises me to this day, that AA still offers a full beverage service on this short flight. Some of the changes in service that I noticed was the raise for the price of alcohol from $5 to $6, the introduction of “Amenity Kits”, which includes a blanket and pillow for $6, and the raise in price of the snacks (cashews and trail mix) from $3 to $4.

One of the things I enjoy about flying American Eagle into MIA, is that one parks in the middle of the airfield, and enjoys a bus ride past AA heavies to the bus gates!

One of the things that I enjoy the most about MIA, is flying through the new concourse J. It is a truly modern building, which houses mostly Star Alliance, and carriers such as TAM, and LAN. The terminal that LX used to fly through, concourse F, was like travelling 30 years ago, talk about retro!

I then went over to the LX check-in counters to collect my boarding pass, my luggage however, was checked through to ZRH, thanks to AA and LX’s baggage interline agreement.

After check-in, I headed to the Club America J. This “temporary” lounge, is located before security, and is thus not very convenient, as one has to leave early to clear security. This lounge, while a small improvement from the one in concourse F, is truly a disgrace. It its basically one large room, with a couple of sofas and chairs, and a small staffed bar in the corner with nibbles. The food offerings are just as a disgrace. The only thing available is cookies, and pretzels. I find it sad, that carriers such as LX and LH’s premium passengers have to visit such a place.

Another major thing missing in this lounge are bathrooms, forget about showers, not even bathrooms. So, this is the solution. Why not just use the employee bathrooms that are designed for staff of the airline offices? Well, one has to go through a maze of corridors, where various offices are located to reach the bathrooms.

Shortly after, I looked at the time, and noticed it was soon time to board, so I headed back to the J gates. Upon arriving at J 17, they just began calling Business class passengers, senator, frequent traveler, and star alliance gold members to board the A332. I was one of the first to board, and after a friendly welcome by the purser (LX call them maitre de cabine), I settled into my seat, 9G, and the f/a offered to hang my sweater, and offered me a pre-departure beverage.

Shortly thereafter, another flight attendant came by to see what my dinner and breakfast choices were. The menu reads as follows:
Dinner North America – Switzerland
First Course Jicama salad with bresaola, grilled artichoke, cherry tomatoes, and Kalamanta olives. Or Fresh seasonal salad with a balsamic vinaigrette.
Main Course Beef tenderloin with a kafir lime sauce accompanied by pea puree and flatbread wrap filled with tomatoes. Or Seared chicken breast served with asparagus, tomato, and olive ragout and steamed rice. Or Grouper fillet with a Pernod sauce accompanied by sautéed carrots, Chinese long beans and coconut pilaf rice.
Or Vegetable cannelloni served with a fire-toasted red pepper sauce.
Cheeses Selection of traditional Swiss cheeses with pear bread.
Dessert Swiss dark chocolate mousse. Or Fresh seasonal fruit salad.
Coffee, Tea, and Digestive. For the first course, I chose the Jicama salad, and for the main course, I chose the beef tenderloin. For the breakfast service, I had to fill in a sheet, with my preferences from a list, so the cabin crew could perform an expedited one-tray breakfast service. My choices were the following: Orange Juice Fruit Smoothie Croissant Whole Wheat Bread roll Fresh Fruit Honey glazed turkey, cheddar, and Pepper Jack cheese. Okay, let the dinner service begin!

After that filling and delicious meal, I decided to head to the bathroom to brush my teeth, and get ready for bed.

So I decided to start watching The Other Boleyn Girl, which was quite interesting.

Shortly thereafter, they started serving the breakfast. I find this one tray service very effective, because all of the people are served at the speed in which they wake up, and everyone already has what they want on the tray.

Well, that does it for now. Sorry it has taken so long for me to write it, I’ve had a very busy summer, visiting Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Morocco, Gibraltar, Italy, and the USA. Some more trip reports to select destinations and flights that I have taken in the last few months will soon follow, but for now, I need to catch up on all that work, 2 months of vacation also comes with a downside!

one quick correction, however. In one of your first pictures, you have mentioned the DL CRJ-700 and DL MD-88. The CRJ7 is instead one of the new CRJ-900 series aircraft. Just wanted to pass that along.
I was a little surprised that the LX Business Class is not much to look at. I expected leather seats and gold trim and ambience but it seemed rather old fashioned. How was the experience at least?

The service and food was the usual Swiss excellence, hovever I would always think twice when PAYING for a C-class ride, as I believe the seat on LX's A332's are not worth the up to $6,000 ticket price.

Nice report and pictures, looks like the LX service is upto scratch!

Meal presentation and cutlery etc looks good, far nice than the stuff CO uses.

The seats are the let down here, however the new A330-343's are due on from next year, they will have a new J seat, should be a big improvement.

Look forward to more TR's.

Nassau airport has not changed much since 1976. Then one walked to all the planes. I flew the same route with an empty Bahamasair BAC111 and returned on a Chalk sea plane from Paradise Island via Bimini; one of the most fun flights. However with the last crash they had I would not want to do it again as those planes are now really old.

Thanks for your kind words! And yes, the NAS airport is a disgrace, but hopefully that Canadian company NAD can make some much needed improvements in the future! Believe it or not, there was an arrival announcement on our arrival in MIA, but the low voice of the f/a and the malfunctioning PA made it VERY HARD to hear, and as I was only recording it with a digital camera, so not the best quality1

Very interesting. I grew up on Paradise Island, and the Chalk's seaplane would land and take-off right by my dock, a truly interesting experiance! Too bad they crashed, and never got back their FAA approval for their Turbo Mallards.

The Club America lounge looks ok but they would need to offer more food for carriers such as LX and LH. Its far from premium. Dont like the corridors either.

The food on LX looks as good as ever and nicely presented. The seats areat the end of their life though and I cant wait to see the new product fully installed. It will be top class again after that . I have been putting off my LX A330 trip until that happens.

Nice reading your TR.

I am always keen on LX long-haul sectors and they have still to deceive me.

Although the old seats are not the best around I find them OK for day time flights, especially in the cradle position. At night, as I am a poor sleeper even on lie-flat seats, like BA or IB, they are still OK. As usual, their outstanding service, food presentation and attention beat anyone around, at least for European standards.

Needless to say LX is my company of choice around Europe and around the world when possible.

Well they've been like that (inuseable) since 2000, so I think they are not a huge priority for the airport authority.

I agree with you on that one, and you're wise to put your trip off until the new J seats get installed. By the way, when will we see one of your LX TR's again ?  Smile

I agree, and frankly that the reason I've stayed with LX and haven't switched to LH or BA like many of my colleagues. BTW, the new J seats, apart form the A330-300's, what a/c will be equipped with them. Its just so stressful with LX, they have never had the same product on all of their long haul planes!

The meal service of LX is top notch and of course much more superior to the US carriers. Even though I think CO offers the best overall product from the US carriers, but the china CO uses is truly "grandma china".

The F/A serving from the cart pictured should have removed the glasses and supplies from the plastic holders and lined them up on the cart for a more premium appearance, the appearance of that cart is more like a domestic business class look. Also, the white china with no design or patterns looks like something a person could purchase at Target.

I fully agree with you that the plastic bottle holder looks tacky and inappropriate!
With the china however, I think the more simple and sleek European design of the LX china, doesn't make it necessaraly cheap, but if thats your opinion its ok.

LX's whole longhaul fleet will eventually be equipped with the new J seats. Also, it is not yet clear wether there'll be a new Y and/or F class seat.

Thanks, but yet again, thats what they said with the A340 J class seats. When will we see the entire LX longhaul fleet with the same product?

The comment re the air bridge at NAS was funny. And yes, the F terminal at MIA is really outdated. JM no longer flies passenger service to MIA. They have a large presence at FLL. 4 daily.

You're probably correct. I just thought its a little weird they don't even have a sticker or something stating its operated by Bulgaria Air.
