Hi Guys,
Finally I had a chance to try the helicopter service between Helsinki and Tallinn, with the tempting summer price EUR 49 one way.
The Finnish Copterservice Ltd operates the route between the capital cities with two Agusta Westland AW139 helicopters, two pilots and max 12 passengers on board, max cruise speed 306km/h. The route is operated up to 14x daily, the flying time is 20 minutes.
18th August 2008Helsinki EFHE 12:00 - EECC Tallinn 12:20
Copterline Agusta Westland AW139 OH-HCR
Seat 2B
Our little trip started in my neighbourhood in the Southern-Helsinki, not far from the heliport:
In both cities the Copterservice terminals are located next to the city centers by the sea. Outside the Helsinki terminal looks more like a little bus station, but it has everything needed: a check in area, a security screening and a passenger lounge, with free (modest) refreshments.
The check in was very fast, there were only three passengers on this flight. I had only my back bag with me, which I could take to the cabin. I was told the maximum luggage weight is 10 kg/person.
The Helsinki EFHE passenger lounge:
Here you can try the seat:
My boarding pass:
A very comfortable seat:
...with a generous leg room:
The leather seat was very comfortable and the cabin felt spacious, atleast when only a couple of passengers onboard. The four-point seat belt was a bit complicated at first, but we got help from the friendly officer who guided us from the terminal.
The take-off and the whole flight was very smooth. The only problem was the unpleasant noise, earplugs were available in the terminal but unfortunately I didn't take them. Somewhere in the middle of the flight the pilot gave an announcement but it was impossible to hear anything.
Later my travel companion told she had felt a little nervous, she couldn't help thinking how the Copterline Sikorsky crashed into sea outside Tallinn in 2005 and all 12 passengers plus two pilots were killed. Anyway, this flight felt really comfortable and safe.
Great views through the large blue-shaded windows, the Gulf of Finland:
Approaching the Tallinn harbour, a Tallink ferry from Helsinki:
Two large cruise ships visiting Tallinn, a common view in the Baltic sea harbours in summer:
Landed at Tallinn EECC:
After the landing we had our pre-ordered taxi waiting next to the landing site, no customs needed. Overall, my very first helicopter ride was a really good experience, a great way to travel between Helsinki and Tallinn, just don't forget those earplugs!

Hola Andaman!
Thanks a lot for this special TR.
It looks like a fun summer trip, very refreshing.

I remember the first time I was on a helicopter. It was back in the 70s around BCN during a summer fair. Since then I have never forgotten a pair of earplugs hen riding one. Even with them on, the roaring of the engines is the most disturbing factor for these fantastic flying machines.
Salut,
Roger

I wish they could make the helicopter cabins more quiet, not easy it seems.
Quoting Allrite (Reply 2): Sounds like fun. Was the flight smooth?
Yes it was fun and probably the smoothest flight I have ever had, it felt like a car ride.
Quoting Teme1976 (Reply 3): It worked as an preview to me. I will make a return trip to Tallinn next week.
I wish you a good trip, you will like it.
We took a FinnComm ATR-72 back to HEL, not a bad a choice either, quick & inexpensive, we paid just EUR 39 one way. The Tallinn Ulemiste airport is close to the city center.

Nice different TR!
Are all the seats facing forward? And, why are some seats in the helicopter (including yours) labelled as "DANGER" by the (red - as in danger) Boarding Pass?

Hey, Andaman,
nice and interesting story.
I´ve thought to do that ride for myself, but no good connections till now.
So I know what´s going on there.
Thanx for posting,

Hi,
The rows 2 and 3 were facing forward.
Quoting PlunaCRJ (Reply 5): why are some seats in the helicopter (including yours) labelled as "DANGER" by the (red - as in danger) Boarding Pass?
The instructions and the colour were a bit confusing, the 'danger' means the areas outside the cabin in the front and back, marked by a thin lane on boarding pass. My row was marked by a red colour.
yes I think this was an easy and inexpensive way to get a helicopter experience. Would be cool if there was a similar service from Helsinki to Stockholm, I guess the distance is too much.

How much time does the heli save you compared with a ferry?

Quoting N353SK (Reply 8): How much time does the heli save you compared with a ferry?
The fastest vehicle makes the trip in about 1,5h, the bigger ferries are a bit slower. The ticket prices are low at the moment due the over capacity, you can get a return ticket for EUR 30. After Estonia joined Schengen the process in harbour terminals have become a lot more quick.
The prices have come down in the air also. Beside Copterservice, there are Estonian Air (SAAB 340), AY's partner FinnComm (ATR) and occasionally AY (E-jets) serving the route.
My return ticket from TLL was just EUR 39 on FinnComm.
Quoting RedAirForce (Reply 9): Tallinn is a wonderful city...if you think that Heli is loud, try an Mi-8!
Yes the old part of Tallinn is really nice. A Mi-8 sounds cool, but I can imagine double earplugs needed

There are only two "affordable" scheduled helicopter services in Europe i know of: ALIDAUNIA flying Agusta A 109 between Foggia, Italy (FOG) and Isole Tremiti,Italy (TQR)
One-way 50,-EUR incl. tax in high season (excl. 10,-EUR "airport tax" at Foggia) and 25,-EUR in low season.
You can check www.alidaunia.it but the website exists in italian only ...
Next to this there´s the link between Penzance, UK (PZE) and Isles of Scilly (ISC) operated by British International with Sikorski S-61N still relatively affordable ...
(check: www.islesofscillyhelicopter.com )
Btw.: When talking about "noise". Seems you´ve never flown on an older turboprop like HS-748/F-27 or Do228 or Metroliner ...
The noise level inside a helicopter is not really higher than in such aircraft - so it´s not that difficult to withstand a 20 mins ride even without earplugs ...

Noise is a subjective matter, but I sure understood why those earplugs were offered before boarding.
Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 14): Interesting route, quite like the idea myself one day.
Yes I do recommend, and also the return flight from the Tallinn airport on FinnComm ATR-72 was a good experience. TLL is a comfortable little airport, close to the city center. I was thinking next time I could take a flight from there further in Europe.

Great TR, probably the first TR covering a commercial helicopter flight!
I'm really glad that this service is back and I hope its here to stay. I'm hoping to try it out on my next trip to Suomi. And last but not least, Tallinn is always worth a trip.

Hi,
I'm also happy Copterline is back, it sure is a good choice between Helsinki and Tallinn - especially if you are not the biggest fan of ferries. Also a railway tunnel is under planning but that won't be reality anytime soon ,)

It seems the recession hit also Copterline, the service is suspended... They say they hope to return if they find a partner(s). I don't believe that will happen any time soon but it would be great fly them again in the future, the heli ride was a great fun.

Nice TR. The fare seems very reasonable too. Glad to see a TR on service to Estonia as I'm 50% Estonian. I remember taking the ferry on the route back in 2004 which took 2 hours.

Yes there are even more quick ferries available nowadays...
...though I still prefer flying ,) Unfortunately the heli service was axed again but the FinnComm
ATR's, Estonian S340 and occasional Airbuses from AY still left for the HEL-TLL route...
