Singapore Airlines 0811
26 Oct 2000
9V-SPM (Boeing 747-412)
Scheduled/Actual Dep: 0830/0844
Scheduled/Actual Arr: 1445/1449
Scheduled/Actual FT: 6:15/6:05
Seat 31K

This morning, we were fortunate enough to be able to check in for the flight as we arrived at Beijing Airport pretty late due to early morning traffic. We arrived at about 0735 and the check-in counter for SQ811 was very long. My dad went to the Business Class counter as he had a PPS card and we were issued boarding passes for the flight, which we emailed checked-in the night before. The pleasant surprise was that we got 9V-SPM this morning as the previous night, they were carrying some delegation to Beijing from Singapore. In fact, 9V-SPM was NOT supposed to be in Beijing but rather in San Francisco. Well, at least that what I heard from the FA.

Anyway, we went to board the plane (which was not at an aerobridge) at about 8.20am from airstairs and got my seat at 31K. My sister got 31J, both of which were at the bulkhead (next to the emergency exits). Sitting beside us were an Indonesian couple, who were extremely friendly. My dad was in Biz class and he probably enjoyed the new Ultimo seats =).

The plane smelt fresh and much like a new car and the walls were sparkling   white. We started taxying at about 8.28am but due to a queue of planes ie. Air China 773 and Dragonair A321, we finally lifted off at about 8.44am. The captain announced that this was a non-smoking flight and our flight time was estimated at about 6 hours flat. Weather was OK, although a little cold but quite cloudless today unlike yesterday when we landed. Throughout the flight, I initially tuned my PTV set to Channel 21 for the map. But I decided I was bored and after breakfast which was prawn noodle (with the thick fat noodle) and a pudding, I asked the FA if I could pay a visit to the cockpit. She said she would check back with me and at that time, we reached speeds of up to 1100kmh!! We had a strong tailwind this morning and were cruising at 39000 feet.

About 2.5 hours into the flight, we (me and my sis) went to the cockpit, to find the captain and his FO having a cup of coffee. Both were local Singaporeans and introduced us to all the cockpit instrumentation, amongst which were the EFIS, EICAS and the navigation computer. He said that even though the Megatop seemed to be big, it was nevertheless just as easy to control as an A310 (LOL!). We then went back to our seat after about 1/2 hour in the cockpit.

Light refreshment was then served and this was a rice dish with greens and mutton(??). Don't really know what the meat was. Anyway, after that, we had only about 1 hour left of the flight so I watched a bit of U571, didn't like it and switched my PTV off. We started descending at about 2.15pm and it WAS a steep descent. Flaps out at around 15,000 feet and the PTVs were switched off. Then we were told that there were heavy departing traffic and we held around Singapore (North-east side) and at about 2.49pm, we touched down (with a horrifying vibration and noise just before touchdown) VERY bumpily and reverse thrusted all the way down the runway. Taxied to gate F40 and we disembarked. Transitting to our next flight to Kuala Lumpur.

If you want to have cockpit visit, better try MH or CX next time.
