Due to a fare sale for flights departing ATL, got a great deal in FC to SEA. We did this as sort of a "mileage run" - doing a long-ish trip to accumulate miles before the end of the year. We also have a FC trip on NW to HNL coming up in October!

Sept. 19, 2008
ATL-SEA
DL 1061
Sched. Departure 6:40pm
757-200 Transcon Version

We live in Greenville, SC, but flew out of ATL. I took 1/2 the day off on Fri. and we drove down to ATL. Arrived in time for a couple hours in the E Concourse Crown Room Club (CRC), which used to be the Business Elite Lounge. This lounge has a decent ramp/runway view, and they still serve hors d'oeuvres (sp?) in the afternoons. Not too bad for a $30.00 day pass.

About an hour before our 6:40p departure, we made our way to the gate, where the plane hadn't yet arrived. It pulled in a few minutes later, and we boarded the 752 about 6:15p.
It's so nice to board planes thru 2L, esp. when you're in FC. Anyway, we were offered preflight drinks, and as I recall, we pushed back a couple minutes early.

We weren't on a "good" side of the a/c for viewing much of Atlanta or anything like that on the trip out. Cocktails were offered when we reached cruise altitude, and dinner followed soon after. I thoroughly enjoyed the beef short ribs, and the chocolate mousse cake thingy for dessert was heavenly!

This plane, being the transcon version, had the AVOD, but the satellite TV wasn't working when I wanted to use it. I did see some people watching CNN, but that was before I tried to use it. I watched Sex and the City (finally) and other than that, watched our progress on the moving map and played the trivia game. The touch screens at my seats (both out and back) were not reliable, as I would sometimes have to touch an answer several times to get it to register, and many time, I would touch one answer, but it would register the one above or below it. I quit playing in frustration a few times!!

The snack basket was passed around and more drinks offered an hour or two before arrival in SEA, and we arrived about 15 min ahead of schedule. There was no view of anything on approach, as there were very low clouds with drizzle when we arrived.

Checked bags didn't take TOO long to arrive, and we got our rental car & were in the hotel before too long. Stayed at the Doubletree Hotel across the road from SEA. We had requested an airport-side room, but apparently there were none available when we got there. NOT GOOD. Oh, well...

After a drizzly, chilly and short visit, we were at the airport about 4:45a Sunday for our 6am flight home.

Sept. 21, 2008
SEA-ATL
DL 1050
Sched. Departure 6:00am
767-300 Domestic Version

We were boarded, and the FA's announced we might be able to push back a bit early, but I noticed a 737-800 next to us pushed back about when we were going to, so we had to wait for them to clear out before pushing back. We ended up leaving maybe a few minutes late. But, a couple of Bloody Mary's made everthing alright...  Smile

Light was just beginning to filter thru the clouds as we left the ground, and it was a few minutes before we broke through the overcast. I tried to get a picture of the top of Mt. Rainier, but my camera wouldn't focus on it! UGH.

We climbed into the sunlight, and drinks were offered, then we had breakfast. I chose the hot breakfast - scrambled eggs over sliced ham in a nice sauce, with some kind of roasted potatoes, a bagel and fruit bowl. It was tasty and filling. On this flight, they actually announced that the satellite TV hadn't been working at all on this flight, and sure enough, it never did. I listened to some music, and tried playing the trivia game again, although I had similar problems to those on my outbound trip. We flew directly over Kansas City and I got a couple pics of that, but it was very hazy so they're not very clear.

Another drinks service was offered a while before landing, with the snack basket being passed through the cabin. I must say, the Inflight Service Leader, a fellow named Larry, was the most accommodating, and service-oriented FA I've ever encountered on a domestic flight. He went throught the cabin thanking each passenger in FC and shaking their hand, and was really hustling during the meal service, and made sure we all had whatever we needed. Two big thumbs up!!

This was my first domestic FC experience on DL, as I've been flying NW for the past few years. I have to say that DL really has their stuff together. Aside from IFE issues, both flights were pleasant, and had a distinct "premium" feel to them.

Thanks for reading - all comments are welcome!

I think the period at the end of the pictures link in my report is throwing things off. May need to cut & paste without the period into your browser to get to the pictures.

SORRY!  Sad

When using the PTVs on these birds, it is not necessary to use the pad on the end of your finger. All you have to do is tap your answer with your finger nail or, better yet, use a pen or hard pointed object. I cannot stand when the person behind me is pushing their screen so damn hard that it is pushing my seat forward (they clearly are pushing with the soft padded skin part of their finger).

Nice trip report, however.

That makes sense, but when frustration takes over..... There's no education about proper technique, so that will happen, unfortunately...

I flew this route the week before you did, and one way the satellite TV was completely dead (although it worked on the way home). Seems like the reliability is somewhere around 50%. Not good when you're trying to stand out from the crowd.

Overall though, DL had a good product (I was in Y on the way down, F on the return). I find their transcon product to be better than that of AS and NW.

Thanks for the report.

Obviously 50% for your two flights but, just two flights are hardly a qualified sampling to base an opinion on DL's entire sat-TV system. The performance is much, much better than you assume.

Well, I have to say, based on my experience (the only data I have to go on), the reliability of at least the TV part was about 25%... I LOVE DL's FC product, but if something can't be reliably delivered, it shouldn't be offered.

Doubtful that you can back that up with any info.......

I just sent an email to DL and received a weak response from them regarding this matter. I have traveled with DL on the LAX-ATL route 4 times in the past 6 weeks. I had 8 flights (5 767-300s, 3 757s), all on aircraft with ptv's and 'live' satellite television. Of those 8 flights (5 in F), my satellite worked twice! Even then, I only could choose CNN and even the Weather Channel came up. I did not even see it listed in the tv menu. So, doing the math here shows that the satellite worked 25% of the time. But I NEVER was able to watch even one second of ESPN on any flight. On two more occasions, my ptv did not work at all. There was a black reboot screen with a lot of useless computer info on it. Thankfully, this was a redeye and I was not that interested in watching anything anyway. So, this leaves 6 flights that I did not have satellite tv. I would have to say that you may be a little surprised how weak their system is. Unfortunately, it does not compete with the satellite tv on frontier or jet blue. When my screen does work, I usually choose to watch HBO specials or movies. Thankfully, the only choice is NOT just satellite tv.
I still prefer them over NWA and CO and AA and UA and WN....

It isn't based on two flights, it's based on about 10. But the reliability is still crap as reinforced by other posters above. Offering a shoddy product that works maybe 50-60% of the time is worse than not even trying.
