Route: DXBLHR (T4&T5) – AMS
Date: 22/09/08
Airline: BA
Class: F and CE
Lounges: DXB and Concorde (T5)

Excellence is attitude!

After spending a long weekend in Dubai it was time to head home. Take me out of the sandbox please! Oddly enough after only 2 flights in First I am getting rather used to the experience. The novelty wears of rather sooner than I expected. I hope this was just a aberration otherwise I can never go back to business again… Let alone cattle class.

I stayed at the fabulous Park Hyatt in Dubai (for more on the inbound journey check http://www.airliners.net/aviation-fo...ms/trip_reports/read.main/134583/) which is only a short 10 minute ride to the airport. I arrived about 2 hours before my flight.

I had forgotten a phone adapter in the RAK Hilton and it was supposed to be delivered by a driver to the airport. Unfortunately he could not get past security to drop it of at the BA desk. When I informed the guys at check in someone immediately sprung into action and started making phone calls. Within a couple of minutes he had located the phone number of the driver, chatted with him in Indian and spurted outside telling me to wait for just 5 minutes. Slightly surprised at this level of service I sat down for what I expected to become a much longer wait, but no. Exactly 5 minutes later Anshuman (the customer service manager) came back with my stuff. Kuddos to him, the Hilton driver and the Hilton Front Desk Manager Sascha for making this work.

Of to the lounge. Only a 15 minute walk…

After about an hour the boarding call was made. Slightly weary after previous experiences I asked if they really, really, really had started boarding of which I was assured. No prices for guessing that we had to wait another 10 minutes at the gate.

Boarding was swift and we were escorted to our seats. Unfortunately also CW uses the First entrance, so it was rather busy.

The champagne…

To my surprise after 10 minutes or so I was personally welcomed by (I think his name was) David. He did rather well and I complimented him for being the first to welcome me personally in 3 flights. He was very surprised but not apologetic. Good man. By now everybody was on board and the showed the safety video.

Oh yes, it’s on!

Cabin at night

It took a while before we started taxiing. When we did I took some ‘mood shots’ of DXB at night. I think it looks rather nice.

After a slow taxi we eventually took off. I’m not sure, but I believe we were like 20 minutes late. We would more than make that up.

Banking after take off

Since it is only a short flight I decided to decline any kind of food service and go straight to sleep. I already had on my PJs (I also got an extra pair for a friend who likes them which I found really nice) and asked the one of the crew to make my bed. Sleep was coming. First some pictures.

My bed nicely made

Slightly wider

I slept for a good 5 hours. Not the best sleep ever on an airplane but satisfactory. I could have slept more but I did not want you guys to miss a picture of breakfast.

Breakfast. Full Monty minus the sausages. Quite nice actually.

We hade made up the lost time but were now informed we needed to stay in a holding pattern for 30 minutes. Nothing much to do but wait…

Going for another lap before landing. What can I take pictures of?

Okay, I am really bored now. The reading light…

Useless shot of the cabin ceiling

Power plug for laptops. Who actually owns one that fits?

Window views

After a 30 minute delay we were nicely on the ground. We were informed it would be a long taxi but I found it quite short. Arrival is at T4 and I needed to get to T5.

Waiting for the doors to open

Now T4 is very healthy. It gives you plenty of exercise. I walked about 20 minutes to get to the bus that will take me to T5.

In T5 I enjoyed the Concorde Lounge. More on that facility you find here: http://www.airliners.net/aviation-fo...ums/trip_reports/read.main/134614/

I enjoyed my time there and look forward to returning in December. Last leg of the journey was the short flight to AMS on a A320 in CE.

Arriving at the gate: our neighbour.

Taxiing to the gate I saw the Martinair 767 in the original livery. I like it a lot. Could not do much better than below as far as pics are concerned.

All in all it was a pleasant journey. Highlights were the service on board and the Concorde lounge. As always: thanks for reading and feedback appreciated!

Great return TR.

Nice job by the Hilton/BA guys to get you back your adaptor.

I liked the DXB lounge pics, hadn't seen that before. it makes the airport look likeable, all i remember from other TR's is a maze of s hops with a lot of people. I guess the new terminal will take care of that.

Good idea to sleep on the flight. Now i loved the breakfast setup, it looks scrumptious, but hey i am biased, as that steak on your outbound flight didn't look that good.

Didn't know it was quite a walk from terminal 4 to get to terminal 5. Does DXB switch to T5 in October?

The martinair livery is very appealing, thanks for the shot.

Another good one.

Regards,
Mohit.

Again, very nice report. I like the way you let the pictures do the talking. I must say I would have preferred to take the day flights to/from DXB, to better enjoy the F service.

Nice report! Would I be correct in saying you like the fish eye lens?  Wink

This happened when I flew BA108 in May. As the economy passengers had already been corralled into the gate area there was nowhere to sit so we were standing for the ten minutes or so until boarding began...with WT and WT+. With separate jetbridges, pre-flight service and the fact all the F & J passengers were already standing it would have made sense for them to board last? No?

That was the reasoning behind my wife and I doing the dayflights both ways when we went to DXB in F, that and short overnight flights don't make me too happy! Plus you're not chancing upon whether your hotel will allow you to check-in upon arrival at either end.

Unfortunately unlike Fraser - who lives on airplanes - I have a regular job.  biggrin  I could not take anymore days off this year without getting in trouble. But indeed: I will never do this again.

I secured that beforehand...  Smile

Hey! No gratuitous lavatory shot??? Points deducted for that one!  cheeky

Anyway cool report and glad you're out of the sand box!

Cheers!
