After a quick overnight at the Westin LAX, I took the shuttle to TBIT and made my way to the First Class check-in of Singapore Airlines. Not a particularly friendly agent, but soon I was checked in all the way to BKK and on my way to the contract First Class lounge. When I did this trip, new lounges were being built at LAX, so this is no longer the lounge SQ uses. The “First Class Lounge” is upstairs by the restaurants pre-security. Great views of the tarmac and decent business class quality offerings. Nothing First Class about this place. I had some sushi and sparkling wine before it was time to go through security.

AA triple seven seen from the lounge

Security didn’t take too long, but the area is clearly too small and overall messy. There is practically nothing at TBIT after security, it reminds me much of the old AA terminal at JFK that Finnair used to use. Very poor. Boarding was already underway, and this being SQ, there were of course no issues with priority boarding, I was onboard in no time at all.

Pre-departure Krug – note the F logo on the glass is not facing me. Sadly that set the tone for the service on this flight, it was a far cry from the superb service I got on SQ12.

Newspapers and hot towels made their rounds as usual, but pyjamas and amenity kits were not handed out until I asked the crew after departure. Rather unusual for SQ. Pushback on time, and we were on our way to Singapore via Narita, certainly a very long flight that I wouldn’t like to take in economy.

I had ordered a glass of Krug after takeoff, and got a glass of Coke. No apologies, just “I thought you said Coke”, and I got the proper stuff a while later.

Service was somewhat spotty, had to ask for drink refills at times. Also, taking a pic of the dessert, a male F/A not very politely asked “why do you need to take pictures of everything?” Normally in F, I’ve found F/As to be totally cool about it, many offering to take one of me sitting in the seat/suite, so that was quite unexpected.

Watched Casino Royale on Wisemen along with plenty more Krug, and called it a night.

Light meal is served before arrival, I had ordered a BTC entrée for it as well. However, the female LSS insisted it was not boarded, while I told her to find it about three times. Awkward. Of course it was loaded and she merely said “Mr. xxx, actually I found it”.

We arrived at Narita roughly on time, and I rushed to the ANA First Class lounge for a quick shower. Some Perrier also hit the spot nicely.

After a while, it was time to board 9V-SPE for the next leg to Singapore. I was getting really exhausted at this point, but decided I’ll have dinner anyway. The crew was up to normal SQ standards again, and service was flawless. The Ferragamo amenity kits are pretty nice with a bottle of cologne, I asked for another one and it was given no questions asked.

A glass of chilled Krug Grande Cuvee

I read somewhere that LAX originating pax won’t get one on the second leg. Pushback and takeoff on time from NRT, all SQ flights on this trip were bang on time. Full dinner was served back then, however I read not all NRT flights have caviar anymore.

I simply slept the rest of the flight; such longhauls take their toll even in F, especially combined with plenty of champagne. Arrival at Changi was at the awful hour of 1am. I thanked the crew for yet another excellent SQ flight, and headed to the SilverKris Lounge.

I was originally going to take an evening flight, but due to commitments in Bangkok later in the day, had to change to a morning flight. As such, I decided not to head to the city at all, instead showering and relaxing at the SilverKris F lounge which is thankfully open 24 hours a day. Cathay could take notice with their HKG lounges…

Needless to say, I wasn’t much in the mood for photos or reporting after the super longhaul LAX-NRT-SIN and a night at the lounge, so just the menu and photos of my Kyo Kaiseki special meal. Pretty stingy offerings in SQ F on this route nowadays, just starter (no choice) and main course, followed by fruit. Not even dessert. So Kyo Kaiseki is not a bad choice, however I just wished I had ordered another Lobster.

Excellent service again on this flight, but I was basically falling asleep all the time unfortunately. On time arrival at Suvarnabhumi concluded this great trip.

This trip was absolutely superb value for 120000 UA Mileage Plus miles and 90 EUR in taxes. And no problems whatsoever securing the seats.

Thanks for reading this series of reports and please leave your comments.

Great report, however I must ask. Who cares if the F logo is not facing you? Do you not know where you are sitting? Seems a little stuck up if you ask me.

I don't care, but SQ F service protocol is that it must face the passenger. And it normally does each and every time.

This LAX-NRT crew just didn't have the perfect attention to detail SQ F crews normally have.

I agree. Also, I fully understand those that travel F class are usually have expectations of how things are done....but when comments are made like that (even if it is against the norm), it is very annoying.

Many on here are able to fly first class, but not everyone. When comments are made like those above, or like that. Such as the food in the lounge was not good, or I didn't get everything in the shower room I wanted...it is upsetting.

There are many of us that would kill to be able to just get into the lounge or sit in first for a trip that might last an hour. It just doesn't make sense. Yes, I understand you pay for a certain level of service and you expect it. But who honestly cares what way the glass faces or if the silverware is polished?

Just be thankful that you have the ability to fly first class and get access like that. There are many who would just like to enjoy it once, then some will make it seem like the world is about to end because the glass isn't faced the right way.

Sorry, rant over.

Lufthansa747, this was not meant to be directed personally at you, and I used that example because was here

You are obviously reading way too much into my comment.

In SQ F, there are strict standards for the presentation, and one of them is that the logos face the passenger. And it happens even on a full house on SIN-CGK.

I was merely pointing out that this crew was somewhat different from my usual experiences on SQ, and that was the first impression. It set the tone of the service given they forgot the PJs/amenity kits, didn't bother with too many drink refills, never asked how the food was and insisted my second BTC wasn't onboard. And I have probably close to 20 flights in SQ F.

Personally I don't give a rat's ass whether the logo faces me or the moon.

People before me have already commented on the slightly snobbish tone of voice. I am sure you are not a person who expects the whole world to revolve around you (and only you) when you park yourself in an F-seat.

If you're indeed not, than you could consider forgoing all the remarks that 'prove' how much you understand what service is and how some of 'them' don't.

I am impressed with the quality of food on SQ (or a lot of other Asian carriers). Having only experienced BA in F I must admit I look forward to its Asian counterparts.

I will make sure I check if the logo's of the champagne flutes are facing me...  Smile

I must say, I am pretty appalled by some of the comments about this trip report. If you do not like the tone of voice, then do not read the report; it clearly says its a First Class flight in the title anyway. In addition, isn't a trip report meant to analyze the small details or would you all rather have a very general description?

If you find it stuck up and annoying, then do not read the trip reports! It is SQ protocol to place the glass with the 'F' logo facing the passengers and this did not happen. Lufthansa747 did not simply say 'the crew was not up to scratch', but he said why. Is that such a crime?

Quoting Henkybaby (Reply 6):

I think that this comment is pretty laughable. No member of Airlines.net has to prove anything to anyone. An understanding of the level of service one can expect is, in my opinion, vital to a trip report, because how can you report on something you know nothing about?

Its actually quite sad to see some of the things written above. Why bother writing trip reports if other members judge you on them, right?

Lufthansa747, thank you for another excellent trip report. Its sad to see that your long journey has come to an end.

IMHO you start going into the wrong direction when you look for international awards on UA metal. And after a standard Y award comes into discussion, it's not worth commenting anymore. The poster seems convinced the miles aren't worth a cent. Each to their own I guess, leaves more SQ F seats for me. Big grin

Exactly. As said above, I don't care about the glasses. That just gave me a vibe this was not your typical superb SQ crew. But some people probably find it also snobbish to expect things such as amenity kits and your pre-booked meals.

My expectations flying SQ are sky high I admit. They always deliver and are very consistent. Even this one slightly subpar flight was great, no doubt about that. But not up to normal SQ standards.

Hello,

These are exactly the details that make the difference.

Not many people notice it but that does not mean the company should not present it properly.

How many people notice in a proper restaurant if the waiter serves from the left and picks up from the right ? Or how many people notice if the lady is served first ?

It's all in the details and Lufthansa747 is good to point it out.

I've heard SQ service is excellent, so it looks like it wasn't up to par on this trip. LAX-NRT is a long flight, but not like JFK-NRT, LAX-HKG, LAX-SYD. I've made all these flights, including
LAX-NRT on AA, CX and QF, so I liked the pics at LAX and your takeoff on 25R. I especially liked the one of the AA 777 taxiing past the first class lounge. That was AA 169 LAX-NRT, which I have flown on many times. That lounge area used to be part of the food court and I loved getting lunch at Hamada Orient Express and going there to eat it, because I had an excellent view of airliners taxiing past, and takeoffs. I don't know what the progress is on the renovation at TBIT, but if they make new lounges, I would love to see that area opened for a good court again

Lufthansa747,

I've really enjoyed reading your reports and seeing your wonderful pictures.

Agree with what you mention about the service qualities, or lack thereof, on SQ 11. For the record, SQ service protocols are very strict and something like not having logos face forward on SQ is like UA flight attendants not doing the live safety demo on international airplanes that don't do video demos. If that happened, it would be appropriate to comment in the TR that the crew were lacking because they clearly did not follow safety/service protocols, which is the point that Lufthansa747 was tryin to make. If you don't want to read a first class report, then don't. But the comment did not come across as snobbish, but rather as one of many examples of how the FA's did not live up to the reputation of SQ FIRST CLASS.

In my eyes those paying big fares up front have more justification for experiencing shoddy service, or problems with bad lounges/long check-in lines, crap food or whatever...because it is highly likely that your passenger in their SkySuite has paid 10x the price of an economy ticket. If you are in economy you've paid to be transported from A to B. If you are in F/J then you've paid to be transported in comfort or perhaps even luxury.

Like Lari I couldn't really care whether the logo in the glass should be facing me or not but as others have said SQ have rigorous service standards and the fact they disregard that signifies they disregard other parts of the service too and don't live up to the reputation of other FAs.

Hi LH747,
Thank you for a great report with excellent pictures.
That lobster sure looks tempting
I can not understand why people here think his comment was snobby.I think by mentioning the
F-logo on the champagne glass he just wanted to say that things were not up to SQ- first calss standard on this flight.

438 EUR all in FRA-DXB-BKK-DXB-FRA

That seems like a very good price for that long trip! Hope you have a great time and get some more Mileage Plus miles... Smile I'll be ready to travel for longer trip in a few years again, hopefully.

V Australia (VA) will start LAX-SYD on 15Dec08 with 77W.

Lufthansa 747, not sure if you have tried QR yet but their service in Y is much better that EK and SQ. They really deserve their five star rating.

Quoting Globetraveller (Reply 8):
If you find it stuck up and annoying, then do not read the trip reports!

How are you supposed to find out what the tone of voice is without reading it?  Smile

My reaction was merely meant to point out that it could be read as condescending and that I assumed it was not meant that way.

Quoting Globetraveller (Reply 8):
I must say, I am pretty appalled by some of the comments about this trip report.

Quoting Globetraveller (Reply 8):
If you do not like the tone of voice, then do not read the report; it clearly says its a First Class flight in the title anyway

The same can be said about your reply to the reactions. If you don't like the replies, then do not read the replies.  Wink

The remark that it is a First class flight report is completely beside the point. Are First class reports allowed to be more snobbish than J or Y reports? I write First class TRs... Should I now write them to a different standard? What in heaven's name is the value of that addition of yours?

I am surprised that SQ has such incredibly high standards. As I stated: in that case there must be no comparison with BA. It is almost like a Michelin star restaurant where those kind of 'mistakes' would be deemed inexcusable. So indeed: I look forward to sampling the Asian F products.

I like the TR, loved the pictures, would have liked to have seen more of the cabin and the seat but all in all a great effort. And yes, I still think the ToV is a little snobbish. Big grin

Thanks for the additional comments!

Quoting BigMac (Reply 14):
Maybe the F/A had another motive for asking (you were taking a lot of pictures with your flash on) but he should have asked politely (if that indeed was his motive).

Yeah I'd understand if I was using flash in a full cabin at night. I wouldn't ever do that. I merely took pics of each course of the meal, he clearly seemed annoyed by that.

Quoting Semsem (Reply 15):
Lobster Thermidor has cheese on it or am I mistaken? Thanks.

Yes, cheese on top.

Quoting Triple7man (Reply 16):
LAX-NRT is a long flight, but not like JFK-NRT

Indeed, but with the 7-hour tag-on to SIN it gets extremely tiring.

Quoting Fbgdavidson (Reply 18):
PIty about the service and food doesn't seem quite as good as those I've seen in yours

Thinking about it, apart from the caviar, lobster and salmon, food ex-LAX was a bit below par. The regular choices for the western snack are a joke IMO, spaghetti or dim sum?!

Quoting The777Man (Reply 20):
get some more Mileage Plus miles...

Yeah full MP miles for all EK fares, which is great!

Quoting The777Man (Reply 20):

Not yet. I'd love to see them starting A319 service to HEL like they do to ARN.

Quoting Henkybaby (Reply 21):

I'll try to report a BA/QF/CX/LA trip in F next. I quite like BA actually, much more relaxed service style and food for sure, but by no means bad.

I have to chime in here as well...

I don't fly F anymore, but used to whenever I was on duty travel so I know what F on SQ is all about... details, service, attentiveness..the works - hey, you don't pay that obscene amount of money for nothing. Ok granted this is a redemption flight for the OP, but you get my point.

Those of you who are used to US carrier service will certainly not understand what the fuss is about. But on SQ, and I dare say, especially on Japanese carriers or CX, presentation is high up there in priority together with safety. Having the logo facing anywhere else but the passenger is like a Singapore Girl without make-up... it's not a matter of being fussy or obnoxious, it's as standard a procedure as making sure all seatbelts are fastened for take-off and landing!

Having worked for the airline, I'm very aware of what those FAs are trained to do... one of the basics is how you place your glasses, plates etc in front of F and J passengers. Noticed that every other photo of the meals has the logos at exactly the same position - facing the passenger, upright? I'll bet you SQ cabin crew trainers would be frowning their eye-brows off if they saw this report, and wondering how that leading crew ever graduated from serving Y to F!!!

I'm also surprised (more like shocked) at the service the you received on the LAX-NRT sector. What could have gone wrong? Tired crew who didn't get enough rest in LAX? An over suspicious inflight supervisor who had warned his crew members that the OP was behaving suspiciously and could potentially be a spy from CX?? Or just a very inexperienced and new Leading crew on her first F class flight? Did you ask to speak to the supervisor?

I know all these lapses might seem trivial to many other members here who have probably never flown SQ F before. But hey, this is SQ. Surely, the OP won't be picking on such minute details if he were on any other airline. All SQ FAs have a part to play to ensure that they remain one of the best in the sky. It's these ultra-high expectations from passengers that got SQ where it is today.  Wink

There's always a better way to fly...

I have enjoyed reading another excellent report - thanks for posting, Lari.

The food looks fantastic as usual on SQ. What I also like is the porcelain - do you know the brand?

Quoting Lufthansa747 (Thread starter):
Pre-departure Krug – note the F logo on the glass is not facing me.

This is a very interesting detail - I had never heard about that before. Those observations help to make trip reports worthwile.

And you didn't sound snobbish - it was clear what you meant. Snobbish is when people flying F Class (probably sponsored by daddy) make fun of people in Economy (who probably had to work hard for their ticket)...
