Background:
My college roomate from Syracuse University recently moved out to Seattle after getting a job with Boeing. He is an aerospace engineer and is currently working on the production line for the VERY VERY DELAYED 787. I’ve been meaning to go visit him for a while so I finally decided to just do it. I found two cheap one way tickets on Delta and Continental.
I left work early on Thursday afternoon and hopped on the A train in lower Manhattan.

Big version: Width: 320 Height: 240 File size: 32kb
Canal Street Station on the A train

I took the A train all the way out to Howard Beach and connected to the Air Train. This is an incredibly easy and inexpensive way to get from the city to JFK. I would never take a cab in a million years. I arrived at the Air Train at around 2:30.

The old Pan Am Worldport, Now Terminal 3 for Delta

My flight wasn’t until 4:40 but of course I wanted some time to take pictures and wander around Delta’s terminals 2/3. I arrived at terminal 3 to check in. This is the old PAN AM Worldport and I think it a truly remarkable structure. Now alot of people complain and say its dingy and old and outdated. I still love it and I think that its a really cool place to explore. The gates are all over the place and tucked away in weird spots which makes for a little adventure instead of the generic concourse where all the gates are in a straight line B1-30. BORINGGGG. You want orderly lines of gates then go to ATL or IAD. One thing I will say about the Delta facilities that is bad is that the check-in area is way too small. At 3pm on a Thursday afternoon you have hundreds of people checking in for flights to everywhere from Dakar to Buffalo. The terminals simply cannot handle the traffic and thus the lines are really long. I used the self check in to print my boarding pass. Then I got on line to check my bag. After doing so, which took a while, I was told my an agent that the line for security was too long and that I should go to terminal 2 to go through secuirty. He pointed to a door and i followed. I had to walk outside along the street through heavy traffic. For those of you who have been to JFK you will know that getting from terminal to terminal on foot is nearly impossible. I made it in one piece and got through security in about 30 minutes. It was extremely hot in terminal 2 so that was annoying.

Once inside I made my way back to terminal 3 via the passageway accross the tarmac. Terminal 3 was packed with people and tons of international flights getting ready to leave. Also they were using 31L for departures and arrivals so I was able to get some pictures alongside the runway as planes landed and departed. Below are some pictures from inside terminal 3.

At around 4:15 I made my way back to terminal 2 and my flight to Seattle had already started boarding. I snapped a few more pictures from Terminal 2 and terminal 1 accross the tarmac and made my way over to gate 29.

They were doing some zone nonsense but I ignored that and just got on even though my zone had yet to be called. Nobody said anything. The inside of the 737-800 with winglets was cool and comfy. Really nice modern cabin. Im glad I got one of the upgraded Delta planes.

The flight was completely full. I settled in my seat and the captain came on and announced our flight time at 5 hours and 49 minutes. We were ready to push a few minutes early but we had to wait for flights to San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles to push before us. This was annoying. Since we were closest to the fence at the back of the ramp we were last to go. This delayed us about 20 minutes. We finally push and began our crawl to 31L. I could see there were alot of planes in front of us but they were using 22L for departures as well so I assumed this would speed things up. It DID NOT. Captain came on a few minutes later and said we were number 27 to take off. We werent airborne for another 75 minutes.

At around 6:25 we rocketed off 31L. This was one of the most powerful, loud, fast and longest take-offs I can ever remember. It was fun! We did the classic Howard Beach Climb out over Queens and Brooklyn and then turned back northwest and headed off to Seattle.

Shortly after the pilot came on and announced our routing. Then the flight attendants began their first service. A free round of snacks, cookies, crackers, peanuts, followed by the Buy-On –Board menu options. I bought a chicken pesto sandwhich for $8 and it was very good. I settled back into my seat for the cross country flight. Im glad I brought my personal DVD player because much of the IFE system was not working during the flight. I beleive only live TV worked but none of the movies or HBO on demand worked. Oh well. Flight was uneventful. About an hour before landing the crew did another full service. I grabbed some free snacks and another soda and enjoyed the very long descent into Seattle. We arrived about 30 minutes late. Not so bad because they factor in alot of ground delay time at JFK so the flight time is padded.

I had a great time in Seattle! Unfortunately due to the ongoing strike at Boeing everything is closed so I couldn’t go inside the factory or museum. BOOOOO. Other than that I had a great trip.

A report from SEA- EWR on Continental will follow soon.

First of all Great report.

The check in issue at T-3 has been a problem since before the extra 9-11 security measures, it's just too small an area. I agree about all the cool little nooks and corners of T-3, T-3 is my favorite at JFK. I never understood the fascination of T-5, I always thought T-3 was more historical. The interior of the 737-800 looks nice.

BTW..

Seattle is one of my favorite places, the wind, rain and clouds seem to agree with me. As does the music scene.

Nice report! I love JFK because of the different types of aircraft you get to see while you are there. I also had forgotten that Delta added PTV's on their 738's - when did that happen? Was there a fee?

Good work!

I think they started doing it at the beginning of last year on all of their transcon 737-800's. And its completely free!!

Oh, so YOU are one of those butt-heads that screws up an otherwise orderly boarding system.
People like you were talked about quite vehemently in another thread regarding Northwest's horrific policy of "everyone get on the plane as fast as you can."
The NW agents in that thread said that it was because of people, SUCH AS YOURSELF, that they had to abandon anything even remotely resembling a pleasant boarding process.

Good to know.

That's why there are rules in place - to avoid the chaos. Big thumbs down to that Delta gate agent.

Was real nice seeing DL gate agents in ATL and ONT this past weekend sending those who tried to board when their zone wasn't called to the back of the line.

Other than boarding early though, not a bad report.

Please do not turn this into a thread about scolding me for boarding out of turn. I worked very hard to put together this trip report for your enjoyment so please do not go off on a side track about my boarding out of turn. I already stated that I boarded when I did so I could get on the plane first and take a picture of the cabin. As a fellow aviation enthusiast you should understand where im coming from and not get so hung up on my boarding habbits!

Thank You

I find CO agents do a great job controlling the boarding process, I agree with the previous poster who singled NWA out for criticism vis a vis the boarding process. My Wife and I flew NWA for the first (probably last) time HNL-MSP back in August, it was total chaos. Just mobs of people pushing onto the jetway, it was nuts.

Not to nit pick, but instead of trying to be the first on to get an empty cabin shot you could have waited to be the last off in Seattle.

I did SEA-JFK [-SNN] last October, and really enjoyed Delta. I got on a reconfigured Song plane, but IFE was acting up, and the only thing I really used was the trivia, whaich was great, especially seeing as the guy two rows ahead of me was leading, and I just mostly copied his stuff!

Looking forward to the return.

This is one of the main reasons I love air travel--walking around airports and seeing planes and people going to all corners of the earth. That's a thrill that even the TSA can't take away from the air travel experience (though I think they try really hard).

Anyhoo, thanks for an enjoyable report!!

Shouldn’t you, an aviation enthusiast, understand why boarding procedures are in place?

Perhaps if the rest of your flight did this, for the same reason, it is why you did not push before the SAN and SFO flights. Unlikely, but if it is ok for you to do it, why not the rest of the flight…and because of it, delay the flight.

Nice trip report though, pretty impressive to get the Habitat plane and the only 738 in the new scheme!

I appreciate the time and effort that goes into a TR like this, it was well done. I just think that those of us who like the industry enough to take the time to do this should be trying to help the airline(s) and do their part as a passenger; not potentially be part of the problem.

what a bunch of cry babies on this website. Jesus christ why dont you people complain about something legitimate like people carrying on gigantic suitcases that dont fit in the overhead bins and have to be checked which delays the flight. Or the people that dont know how to get out of the aisle when they board and delay everyone else getting on. Or the people that dont take their seats when the plane is ready to pushback. Or the people that walk around when the seatbelt sign is on. Or the people that get up to use the bathroom during taxi for take-off. Or the people that cant get to the gate on time and we all have to wait while the gate attendants page you.

Exactly I couldn't agree more! People actually pay for F Class tickets so that they don't have too board with the main cabin and of course they receive other benefits as well. I personally can't stand all the pushing by other passengers if boarding is only called for First Class or Elite flyers. I have seen on my last US Domestic flight with US Airways that people had to go out of the boarding line because they were not in Zone 1 and I found that to be good otherwise the airline doesn't need rules for boarding in the first place.
