Sydney (SYD) – Perth (PER)

Airline: Qantas Airways
Flight: QF581
Aircraft: B737-800
Aircraft 1st Flight: 15 March 2002
Registration: VH-VXG “Port Douglas”
ETD: 1010
ATD: 1040
ETA: 1315
ATA: 1415
Flight Time: 4hr 55min
Cruise: 36,000 Feet
Seat: 3A ( Business Class)

Pre Flight:
Nice to be back in Sydney after a long time, but now its finally time to head home to Perth. Time in Sydney was spent meeting up with relatives and also had a look at the Sydney Aquarium and also a nice harbor tour. We arrived at the airport 1.5hrs before departure and check in was really quick as I already did an online check in a day before from the hotel. We had breakfast at Burger King before heading up to the lounge. And guess what I spotted at the hanger next to us, QF’s first A380, getting ready for her first ‘mystery’ flight. Why didn’t I know about it? If I did I would try to get on it too. The QF domestic lounge itself is nice and airy and its big, and it was as usual packed with businessmen.

What tail is that? Hrmmm is it? Could it ?

A Pleasant surprise, QF Whalejet ready to embark on a mystery flight

In Flight:
A very cheerful crew aboard today. This flight is full both in J and Y. I was pretty devastated 2 weeks before this flight as the reason I chose this flight was that it was initially supposed to be operated by the B743, but now it’s a B738. The aircraft was also delayed due to late arrival of the inflight crew, but no major dramas other than that. Domestic J seats on the B738 are just that, seats.

No PTV or powerpoints for your laptop, legroom also a little tight, but other than that the setas are pretty comfortable. We had a long taxi of about 30mins and the flight itself was especially bumpy near Esperance, but other thant tat it was a pretty pleasant flight and I also managed to kill my time with about 2hrs of sleep and the rest of the time was spent watching Top Gear on my laptop.
Almost home

Perth (PER) - Kuala Lumpur (KUL)

Airline: Malaysia Airlines
Flight: MH124
Aircraft: B777-200ER
Aircraft 1st Flight: 8 July 1999
Registration: 9M-MRK
ETD: 1630
ATD: 1630
ETA: 2210
ATA: 2140
Flight Time: 5hr 10min
Cruise: 41,000 Feet
Seat: 3K (Golden Club / Business Class)
Pre Flight:
Time really flies when you are on holiday. Always sad to leave home but life goes on. Check in was pretty quick as there were only 2 passengers before us.

9M-MRK ready to take me to KUL

Airside at Perth International is getting more and more congested by shops!

The Golden Lounge was closed, so we were given 2x $25.00 vouchers to use at the coffee shop near the gate. Pretty good actually, and my wife prefers this voucher stuff rather than the lounge, but for me, I prefer the nice tranquility of the lounge.

The departure are at PER is now more like a shopping mall, they should really start having plans to expand the entire international terminal as they are just about to run out of space for everything. It’s a full flight in both J and Y with only 2 empty seats in J. We had an incident in Perth yesterday where a QF A333 (flight 72) from Sin suffered a sudden loss in altitude with several paasengers being severely injured and the aircraft had to make an emergency landing at Learmonth airbase.

In Flight:
To me, MH has one of the best legrooms for J class

Great MH cabin crew as usual and being the klutz I am, I spilt my perrier water all over my wife’s seats, kudos to the crew who were quick to react and save me from being nagged by my wife. 2 GA birds were also on the ground, A B738 (PK-GEH) and a B734 (PK-GGD). For some reason I stayed awake the entire flight, and with all the nice programs on the AVOD, somehow nothing caught my eye, so I just watch more stuff from my laptop instead. The inflight catering, especially the fillet steak was surprisingly really well c ooked and tastes really nice too. Dessert was just average.

Mood lighting at work

Did an inflight survey plus watched the airshow

The flight itself was uneventful and as usual we hit turbulence when we were in Indonesian airspace. But other than that another great flight by MH.

8 October 2008
Kuala Lumpur(KUL) –Jakarta (CGK)
Airline: KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
Flight: KL809
Aircraft: B747-400 Combi
Aircraft 1st Flight: 11 Oct 2000
Registration: PH-BFV “City of Vancouver”
ETD: 1600
ATD: 1903
ETA: 1700
ATA: 1941
Flight Time: 1hr 32min
Cruise: 39,000 Feet
Seat: 4A (World Business Class)
Pre Flight:
Another nice night at the Le Merdien KL Sentral, soon its time to head home. A friend dropped us off at KLIA and horrors to horrors, our flight will be delayed by around 2 over hours. Reason is technical. Oh well, besides spending our time shopping a little, the rest of the time was spent just killing the time away at the Plaza Premium lounge which KLM uses. Good thing is that its expanded now and KLM passengers got to use a new corner which was much more peaceful.

A rare sight

Managed to speak to a lady at the lounge who came off from AMS on the KLM flight and she said the original aircraft had engine problems and it was pretty lucky to also have another B744 standing by as she is a frequent traveler with KLM and she reckons that B744 at KLM are usually maxed out in terms of usage so we were lucky they got a replacement aircraft within 2 hours in AMS. Boarding was called at 1830. Gate was a mess as people were already anxious to get on the flight, plus a lot of Indonesian holiday makers were also making their way back home.
PH-BFV, better late than never

In Flight:

This B744 has also been upgraded with the new interior but unfortunately my seat does not recline all the way down due to door 1L being right behind me, no dramas for this short hop to CGK, but I will be disappointed if I am on a long haul flight on this seat.

Flight itself was uneventful and the crew also kept apologizing for the delay. It was also nice to use the noise cancelling headsets for the AVOD (clip on ones were used on the earlier CGK-KUL sector. To my surprise, amenity kits were also given out.

Overall another nice flight by KLM and I will definitely fly them sometime in the near future.

A great part two Mr. ThaiA345!

From the few lessons i learned about MH's catering, it looks like you got the new inflight service on your PER-KUL flight. This of course, is unlike my experience, which apparently consisted of a jambalaya of old versus new world MH china  Smile

I prefer the colorful patterns on the older china though!

One question, i noticed green striped blankets. Are these new? The blankets on my flights were the usual purple striped ones, that were the same as the ones they had during the DXB-EWR days.

KLM seemed good as always..and yes, good thing there was a spare aircraft .. but where was that spare aircraft that was made available in only 2 or so hours?

Thanks for sharing!

Regards,
Roni

Many thanks for the report, ThaiA345

I was quite impressed with the catering on both KL and MH, though QF domestic J looks like a bit of a letdown. Ok, the food's fine, but as far as I can see, it's not too different from Y class offerings. Oh well, at least we're not in America/Europe..

Also, what was the Uzbekistan 757 doing in KUL? Malaysia and Uzbekistan - hmm..

BTW, I think the obligatory shot of your wife's bag should become an a.net standard haha.  Smile

Hi Roni, thanks as usual for reading. On the new J class service (which actually came out with the installation of the lie flats) new table ware and the green blankets> Even on my A333 flights with the old seats from DEL the new service items were already in place so it seems strange that you still got the older items.

I am somehow now a fan of KL's revamped JCL cabin. It seems to be trying too hard to be something they aren't with the pseudo privacy screens et al. I much preferred the old WBC where the seats were just as they were supposed to be, no pretense. Anyhow, the service I have received on KL has so far been good except for one bad apple, but she was probably one bad apple in a basket of AMAZING FAs.

Ahhh Mr Soh, nice to hear from you again after such a long time. I really like KL's WBC package and its really a nice fresh choice on my usual CGKKUL runs. However, out of the 6 times i flew them, 3 times it has been delayed and I am talking about more than a 2 hr delay. So, for business trips it is definitely out of the way for me, but for leisure, no problems.

Cheers and let me know when you are in Perth, who knows I may be back there at around the same time too.

I remember your house is in Applecross. I am not too far beside the next suburb in Ardross on Millington Street. I will be there March 11-15 in 2009. However, I will also be travelling to Esperance (Skywest F50) within those few days so it will be a little tight, no? Let's play it by ear ok? If not, coffee in Freemantle Dome works for me too.  Smile

Mr Soh, trust me, everytime I get aboard the B734 on my CGKKUL runs and if its the new bright red interior i can't even take a decent nap!. Heading back to Perth this Thursday on the 1830 MH KULPER flight on the A333, hopefully its not the one with the new upholstery, they were suppose to change the seats to those of the A332, don't know what happened there !

Uzbekistan carries passengers travelling to Central Asia and the Middle East. Oil/Gas workers, tourists and is also popularly used by pilgrims travelling both to Mecca and Jerusalem. There is also a reasonable cargo load on the route.

Hi again Mr. Kwee,

I am just wondering, was the Golden Lounge in PER closed for renovation? There were rumours going around that MH is planning to imply their 'rimbun' concept, taken from their Regional Golden Lounge in KUL to all other Golden Lounges throughout the world.

You are lucky to get those survey forms. I always wanted to contribute my inputs but I was never chosen. I wanted to ask for it voluntarily on several occasions but I was afraid of being turned down, as I think they have some sort of pattern on choosing the passengers that they are going to give away the forms.

The Plaza Premium Lounge is synonimous with pariah kind of offerings. I was surprised to see that it was renovated and expanded although I think they won't ever be in the same league as the elite lounges in KUL - the 3 Golden Lounges (Satellite, Regional, Domestic), TG's new lounge and EK's lounge.

Quoting CXtra (Reply 4):

Uzbekistan Airways has a schedule service to KUL. I think it is 1 or 2 weekly service. Petronas has a big business venture in Uzbekistan.

Yeap, the lounge in Perth is closed for renovations, so thats why J customers get AUD$25 dollars per pax to spend at the cafe. Hope its already open when I fly off tomorrow.

You are lucky... When I flew out of BNE in Golden Club, there was no indication that lounge access was not on the package. I received no lounge invitation at check in so I just merily made my way airside, thinking my access-pass WAS my boarding pass. How wrong was I... Not only MH didn't have a lounge in BNE, I was not allowed access into any of the lounges at the airport.

A question, in MH's wikipedia page, they clearly mentioned that they have a Golden Lounge in BKK. Is it true? I never heard of anything about it but stumbled upon some online 2005's news articles about MH's new Golden Lounges for BKK and ADL. The latter did not materialised, but how about the former?
