Royal Brunei LHR-BNE-LHR (via DXB and BWN) Business Class
This is my first trip report so any feedback is much appreciated.
Trip: LHR – BNE (via DXB and BWN)
Airline: Royal Brunei
Plane: All legs on B767-33A/ER
Flight BI 98 (LHR – BWN) and BI 71 (BWN – BNE)
Departure: 4th Oct 08:30 am
Arrival BNE: 5th Oct 07:50 pm
Royal Brunei doesn’t serve alcohol on its flights as it’s a Muslim airline, which for me is fine although I like a cold beer and a good wine.
LHR – DXB:
Check-in at Heathrow quick, no queues and efficient. Boarding cards for the connecting flight in Brunei were also issued.
Lounge at terminal 3 is shared with other airlines – refreshments very basic, nothing to really write about.
Departure on-time and load in business class was 100%.
In-flight service was very good although a bit clumsy, e.g. cutlery placed on the table 1 or 2 minutes after the food. Flight attendants were friendly and attentive and responded very quickly to the calls. Plane was clean.
Quick stop in Dubai. After security in the transit area you only have a few minutes to spare before boarding the same plane again. Awful smoking rooms in Dubai: small, smoky and full of people. OK I do smoke but I hate rooms full of cigarette smoke.
I was quite tired when we departed LHR so I just took a photo of the plane at the gate and no cabin photos until our last flight BWN - BNE.
Getting ready for departure at LHR
DXB – BWN:
Quick boarding. Departure on-time and load in business class was 100%.
Again, in-flight service was very good but not clumsy. Plane was clean. Arrival in Brunei on-time at 08:45 am 5th Oct.
Lounge in Brunei is nice. Adequate food and drinks for the time. Nice massage chairs. Clean showers.
Brunei airport itself is very small with just a few small shops. Basically more than two hours there must be painful. The duty free shop is a joke – looks like a small convenience store.
At BWN
BWN – BNE:
Again, nice and efficient crew and good food. Departure and arrival on-time.

BNE – BWN:
Check-in quick, friendly and no queues. Boarding cards for the connecting flight in Brunei were also issued.
Royal Brunei uses the Qantas lounge, which is OK, with shower facilities but the refreshments were quite disappointing. Overall I was expecting something much better from Qantas.
Flight departed on-time at 12:25 pm. Load factor in business class was around 45% and economy was around 60%. Plane was clean.
In-flight service was very quick and efficient. Food was very good as well. Plane was clean.
Most of the flight was quite bumpy, but I actually enjoy it. Arrival was on time at around 05:20 pm.
The food in the lounge in Brunei was very good with a good selection and adequate for the time.

BWN – DXB:
Flight departed on-time at 07:35 pm and again the in-flight service was very good.
Arrival in Dubai was on-time around 01:15 am.
We even managed to spend a few minutes in the lounge in Dubai, which is run by Qatar Airways. It’s a really good lounge with great food and drinks.
The terminal was full of people.
The duty free shops were also very full and after a quick (sort of) stop there to buy some cigarettes we went to the gate where we were one of the last ones to board – but we didn’t delayed the plane.

DXB – LHR:
Flight departed on time at 02:30 am and the in-flight service was great again. There was a problem with the AVOD so it was reset. It worked fine for everything apart from the moving map that wouldn’t show the map (just the flight path) when it was zoomed in. But it’s not a big deal anyway.

Overall comments:
I found the business class seats comfortable and you can get a good sleep. The quality of food and drinks were very good with some options being excellent.
Cabin crew very polite, friendly and efficient.
Entertainment system very good and the selection of films was fine.
I would personally rate the airline as a 4 Star airline based on these flights and class.

Hola MorcegoA330!
Thanks for this unusual TR.
I think it is the first time I read a so much detailed TR on Roal Brunei Airlines.
I like the cabin layout for this B767: 2-1-2. I think it feels very roomy and airy.
Food looks excellent and really nice presented, but what really makes my jaw drop are the toilet pictures. It looks amazing, altough I do not personaly like this golden touch they use on faucets, sink or at table service.... but it seems it is very much appreciated by ceratin airlines.
Salut!

Great report. My first one reading a Royal Brunei TR. It really looks like a nice airline to fly with decent food and seats. The toilets look totally different than any other carrier in that class.
Thanks for the insight into this airline.
Looking forward to the TAM one .

Very interesting report. RB looks good. The food looks good, although a little dated in style. I'm also liking the gold taps in the bathroom, very bling!

First of all, welcome to Airlines.net MorcegoA330!!
A very nice first trip report on an airline that is not featured here very often. The Business Class toilets look amazing with the golden sink and nice flowers - very impressive.
The seats look very similar to the older SQ SpaceBeds and the 2-1-2 layout is very interesting.
A very good start to trip reporting and I cannot wait to see more from you soon. Thanks for all your efforts.
I think it is the first time I read a so much detailed TR on Roal Brunei Airlines.
Thanks Roger. That's one of the reasons I decided to write this TR.
Quoting Rogerbcn (Reply 1): altough I do not personaly like this golden touch they use on faucets, sink or at table service.... but it seems it is very much appreciated by ceratin airlines.
I wouldn't have toilets like that at home but it's fun in a plane.
Quoting AFKL (Reply 5): Great TR! Those toilets looks insanely large, and those J seats look very similar to SQ's old J seats.
Looking forward to your TAM TR. Will you be flying J again?
Thanks Allard, but as I said before the toilet is not that big - it's just my great photographer skills. lol. just kidding. I'll be flying economy with TAM.
Quoting BA319-131 (Reply 9): Great report and pictures, perhaps the most detailed RB TR we have ever had here?
Food looks well presented, portions look good.
Like the 2-1-2 cabin, seats look good though legroom looks limited at least thats how it appears to me.
Food was very well presented and really high standard. Seat pitch is 57" and is perfectly fine for comfort. It's similar to AF - although even if AF had 80" seat pitch I'd never fly with them again (sorry personal annoyance with their service/attitude).
But something I forgot to mention is that the cabin is indeed a bit dated although very comfortable.

Well, what a great first post on a.net!!
When I was in SYD some months ago I saw a Royal Brunei 767 at a gate there and have been hoping to see a TR on one since, so thanks for posting this!! The food looks great too, as well as the C-class cabin in general. Interesting they did 2-1-2 configuration.... it seems mostly the US carriers do 2-2-2 on the 767.

I can only think of Air Canada and Alitalia having the 2-1-2 J seating on the B767, though I am sure there are many others which do the same, or a similar 1-2-2 seating.

A very nice trip report.
Just curious; how much did Royal Brunei charge for this trip? Is the routing to Brisbane with double stops much cheaper than say, EK?
I like their branding.. Reminds me of the 1980s .. in a good way.

Well there is one US airline that has 2-1-2 on their 767's.

Thanks.
With EK it would cost around £1,300 extra per ticket and the traveling time is basically the same (25.5 hours outbound and 26.5 hours inbound), so why pay more if the service is excellent?

Nice and rare report on BI, definitely one of the highlights of this forum about this often neglected carrier. I have had a few good flights on them into BWN but never before longhaul, although I must say I have been tempted more than a few times because of their very attractive fares. However, frequent flier tie ups always ensure that I am obligated to stay with certain carriers.
Their FAs I would dare say are as good or even better than MH or SQ. They all hail from Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.
The "gold" taps that everyone is gushing about is something that is left over from days when they had a FIRST CLASS cabin. Not just gold plating, but PURE 100% GOLD!!! Everything that had a metal fitting was made of gold from the taps to the seat belt buckle. Of course long gone are those times as this poor little airline bleeds to a slow death - never seen a day of profit since 1976 when they were formed.
BI has since done away with FIRST CLASS and has concentrated on revamping their BUSINESS CLASS and what you see here is the result of that. This seat (the name escapes me... DREAM SEAT? SKY DREAM? SKY BED?) is similar to the SPACEBEDs found on SQ and UA's transcon Premium Service 757s and was introduced sometime in 2004/5.
Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

Thanks for providing us with an insight to BI's premium class. What's the 'multi-purpose' transparent pink sauce that seems to appear on almost every dish??
Having flown BI on its regional routes, I must say that they're good (but definitely not SQ or MH standards). Having said that, service levels on Asian carriers are always pleasant and good.

Hi MercegoA330, excellent start as a trip reporter! Thanks for this rare glimpse into Royal Brunei's service - it's an airline I had been wanting to fly on for the longest time, but have never managed it because their schedules and connections just haven't matched mine. Their fares though are very, very reasonable - makes what's on offer impressive and extremely good value for money. Thanks again for the report.

Nice report.
I've been tempted to try BI as they do offer some good C class fares, however their lack of affiliation with any of the alliances and mileage accrual has been the show stopper each time.
btw - in the early/mid 90s, I worked with a company that did the interiors on the various Brunei VIP aircraft at SBA. Let me tell you between all the gold, thick carpeting, leather and furniture the planes were truly flying palaces!
