.............http://i446.photobucket.com/albums/qq186/WTMTR4/ba2.jpg.................

Well I had to go to the World Travel Market in London and had a few meetings planned. I decided to go on the 10th November and visit my Mum in her new apartment and to spend my birthday with her. I looked at flights and BA to LGW was the cheapest. Also LGW is easy to get to my Mums place.

DATE : 10/NOV/08
ROUTE: DUB-LGW
AIRLINE:BRITISH AIRWAYS
CLASS: EURO TRAVELLER
SEAT: 25A
A/C: BOEING 737-400
REG: G-DOCL

I checked in the night before online and decided to sit at the last row at the back.

I would get good photos for the flight and of the take off behind the wing. Also this usually is the last to get filled up. Looking at the flight before the loads looked very light anyway.

I proceeded to the A gates and as I arrived the A/C was pulling onto stand. I watched the passengers get off and there were less than 40 !!

Soon after it was time to board. I stepped outside and it was very windy and cold. As we boarded the cabin crew member at the door said ''sorry for putting you through that '' lol...

There were under 40 of us again for the return to LGW. No wonder BA are stopping this route. I started talking to one of the cabin crew and she was telling me that sometimes they have had only 2 passengers onboard. She said she used to fly for Ryanair and that BA are wonderful to work for compared to them. Nice to see Cabin crew happy in their jobs compared to some airlines.

Take off was quite bumpy due to the high winds. The pilot had come on over the speaker before we took off and warned us that it would be very bumpy and that there was nothing to worry about.

Soon after the service began.

They came around with Ham and Cheese rolls and I asked them if they had just Cheese which she smiled and came back with one.

I chose Coffee and Orange juice.

It was very nice and good for the short hop to LGW.

Landing was interesting. The plane was swaying on approach and the weather was terrible.

So after we got to our gate ( International Stand ) I said goodbye to the crew who were wonderful and got onto the bus.

I went to the train station to see my train was delayed and I would miss my connection. I got on it anyway and got off at Horsham. Once I got there I was told that there were issues with alot of trains and that I would be transferred by bus to Dorking to make the Epsom connection. The roads were flooded in many areas and the journey was interesting to say the least. Finally we arrived and I saw that there was a train in 10 minutes. So all back to normal. I arrived in Epsom only 20 minutes late. My Mum met me and we went to my favourite Indian restaurant . Jimmy Spices

Then we went to my Mum apartment. A very civilised area with the planes going over lol...

The next morning I got up early and left at 730am to go to the train station Ewell West. I said goodbye to my Mum .

I had to get the train to London Waterloo and then change onto the Tube. Then I had to get the DLR to Excell.

Greece were sponsoring some things hence the flags and posters.

I went around all the interesting stands.

Nice to Guyana there .

Etihad had a free bar and some nice gifts.

Serbia had a good stand and also a famous singer called Aleksandra who won a MTV award in 2006.

FREE IRISH BAR!!!

So all in all it was a good day but very tiring. Below are some of the gifts I got.

So thats it . I hope you enjoyed seeing all the countries and airlines. Comments , questions and suggestions appreciated as usual.

Fabulous trip report there OA260. You got a lot of merchandise indeed - quite an impressive collection. That shopw seems quite lovely. Was it only open to the industry or did it have general public days as well?

That was a great report.

Shame BA are dropping the route, the service always sounds so good but with loads like that it really isn't any surprise. All the gifts you got look really nice.

Hope you had a good birthday!

Nice trip report...Brinds back a lot of memories!

I shudder when I hear about WTM...Spent a few years organising stands for an airline I worked for and doing a few of the shows...The amount of stuff people would leave with was unbelivable! You would see people with suitcases full of pens, pads, key rings and I would often wonder what they did with it all! Especially if they did not always work in travel!

Looks like you did a lot of walking...

Hola Philip!

Was that a TR to LGW or a trip round the world?

It is like a gigantic airport where all airlines meet together, plus the most tourist attractive spots and distinctive features of every single country in the world.

Thanks! Liked the pictures of the display from BCN's new terminal.

Salut!

Roger

Hi Phil!

First of all, let me tell you that I feel a bit dizzy right now. The reason is very simple: so many beautiful stands, brochures....wooow, it is almost painful to look at. London World Travel Market is a thing I would love to see together with Berlin fair. Part of it is because tourism is my profession, but it also is my great love. When you add airline stands to that, I am afraid that I might act like a three year old there  Wink

I saw some of the stuff from Serbian stand and it looks really nice. I guess Aleksandra Kovac also sounded good there. Also, I'm glad they gave you that small booklet called "Weekend in Belgrade", it is nicely put together. Belgrade has a tourism fair too. It will be held from February 26th until March 1st. Internationally, it is still quite small. Just as a comparison, I only managed to get two pens there (JAT and Olympic  Wink ), but it offers a very good insight into what Serbia has to offer. Would you come here too?

A.

Great TR Phil!

The huge variety of stands there is amazing, and the free gifts look great too!

Thanks for posting all those pics, it must have taken you ages!

It looks like EK and EY made a particularly big effort with their stands.

Regards the LGW route, the service looks decent but those loads are shocking. It's no wonder BA are cutting the route. I've booked myself on it during the Christmas just to try it out, I've never flown DUB-LGW with BA before so I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks for posting,
EI320

Yes they do and a nice guy from LAN has promised me a model A340 to be sent to me by post but we will see if it actually comes lol....

Quoting Trintocan (Reply 3):

Its a industry only and invite basis only AFAIK. I had not been for 3 years due to other engagements that clashed but I forgot how much I missed it. I will be there next year for sure.

Quoting Shamrock350 (Reply 4):

Hmm I love that place. I just love any chance to eat curry.

Quoting Johruk (Reply 5):

Haha well when I was a kid my Dad used to be manager for an area in London for British Telecom. He had a friend at the Earls Court exibition center who was in charge of communications where the WTM used to be held. I got in two years running and I was hooked from then. I remember one year LH had a mock up of an A300 cabin with the brown seats. I was like a kid at Christmas. I came home with around 30 kilos of airline stuff. My Mum went mad . I actually have pics of me sitting in all the British Midland leather Diamond service seats and SAA too. That must have been around 1989 !!

Hi Aleksandar. Yes Im very impressed by how professional and well organised the Serbia stand was in general. They really pulled out all the stops. I felt a bit sad because I have not been to Belgrade for a long time now and I really want to visit soon. I must look at my diary.

Yes I guess they have money to burn . They had amazing stands and Danni Minogue was there also on the Etihad Stand promoting the new MEL route from AUH since her home town is MEL. The crew looked great in their uniforms and it was nice to sample the seats.

As we say in Greece τίποτα ( Nothing ) !!! But that is my experience of them. Their sales and marketing are rubbish. Even when I visited them in Frankfurt they only gave me an out of date timetable and did not seem to care if I gave them my groups who were connecting to cruise ships so I didnt bother to give them any business. Also this time they were too busy talking between themselves so I didnt bother to ''disturb'' them.

Oh I love Ellas, but I know a little about the attitude @ OA at least .... shame, it was a fabulous airline 20 years ago. I'm (a little) surprised Aegean staff would behave in a similar manner....their cabin staff are totally different...very enthusiastic and proud.

Thanks for the report and photos, brilliant.

You beat me to the question, but after some research I have some grim news. This event is apparently restricted to travel & tourism industry professionals. I wonder if that rule still applies if the visitor is taking a Travel & Tourism class? I wish.

Dont be surprised, whilst their on board service may be good their treatment of potential new business clients and trade leaves much to be desired. I have plenty of experience with A3 on that. Shame really as I was very pro active in my enthusiasm to put some business their way.

Olympic gave me some media kits and a nice bottle of wine. Cant complain there. Also a nice friendly chat about current developments in the company. I knew one of the guys from OA as we used to work together in the London office. People were walking up to the A3 stand and getting ignored. Not a great advert. In these current climates you need to go out and get your business and not wait for it to come to you.
