Another Conference down and it was time to head home. It had been a full on week but at least I had some free time to head out to Sydney airport to do some spotting. It always seems to be a mad rush to leave the hotel venue and get to the airport. I don’t seem to panic as much as everyone else as I usually checkin in online the night before and my flight is always the last to leave as Frequencies to Perth are not as high as Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide. I was one of the last to leave the Marriott Hotel and there was a massive line of my colleagues outside the front waiting for a taxi.

I thought it may be a while before I got to the airport as trying to catch a taxi on a Friday afternoon may be a bit tricky. A close colleague of mine heard that our company had in fact hired cars to take us to the airport and that this information had failed to reach the masses. I wasn’t sure as I thought hiring a couple of coaches would have been more cost effective. To prove me wrong my colleague asked a driver of a town car outside the hotel if he was here for our company. The driver looked confused and said yes. Two of my colleagues as well as my self hopped in. Now this was traveling in style.

Only when we were approaching the domestic terminal did we realized that this car had been ordered by our company to go to the airport from the hotel but it was to carry our big boss to the International terminal to catch his flight to Canada. WHOOPS! We were dropped outside the Qantas Domestic terminal and made our way to the bag drop off line which was moving quite efficiently.

I made my way through security and then upstairs to Qantas Club where a lot of my other colleagues were. I confessed to my manager that we had taken the GM’s car which she laughed at because she told me he forgot he had ordered a car and caught a cab instead. Oh well at least the car did not go to waste. Speaking of waste I wasted no time hoeing into the Cakes and booze on offer at Qantas Club. I thought after a busy week applying myself to my job now was a little time to indulge and hey I will be back at the gym tomorrow. I fell in love with this vanilla cake they had on offer and I must have had at least half a dozen slices. Qantas Club was busy which was usual for a Friday afternoon.

My Colleagues numbers dwindled as flights to Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne were called. I was now by myself as I was the only one from the Perth office that was attending the conference. I decided to head down stairs and have a look around and checkout my aircraft. I headed to gate 5 which was my designated departure gate and found my aircraft at the gate being busily prepared for its flight across to Perth. My ride tonight would be Boeing 767-338ER VH-OGO which used to be christened Unity. Those tittles have since been removed.

A boarding call went out at 5:30pm I found my seat which was 36A and waited for the boarding process to finish. We sat at the gate for a while the rest of the passengers boarded. Next to us in gate 4 was Qantas Boeing 767-336ER VH-ZXG who was being prepared for her next domestic sector. The usual welcome announcements were made by the Customer Service Manager and the flight deck. We were soon informed by one of the pilots that there would be a small delay to our departure due to two passengers who had failed to board.

Pushback was only 10mins behind schedule at 6pm. The usual safety demonstration was performed with the cabin lights then being dimmed and we began our slow taxi to the threshold of runway 16R. We held adjacent to a Qantas 737-838 who was also waiting for departure. After the 737 departed we lined up on the runway. The takeoff roll was in typical strong confident 767 style and our climb out of Kingsford smith was quite steep. There was not much of a view to be seen as there was a lot of low level cloud and this caused some turbulence during our climb.

The cabin crew set to work on preparing the meal service while the CSM gave us some information about tonight’s flight. The meal service was served about 45minutes into the flight and tonight’s choice was either Grilled Fish with Green pea purée or Tortellini. I selected the fish which was very bland and the Green pea puree was also very bland. At least the meal came with a cheese and biscuits and a bread roll.

The movie was screened during the meal service and tonight it was Amazing Grace. It looked ok but I was too far from the screen to see it properly so I decided to listen to my i-Pod instead. Once the meals service was cleared the cabin crew walked down the aisles with ice-cream. The rest of the flight was uneventful with only small bouts of light turbulence. The crew walked up the aisles regularly during the flight with water There was no flight information given by the flight deck but when the movie had finished screening the flight map showed that we had flown quite an odd routing. We had flown from Sydney towards Melbourne and then from Melbourne towards Mt Gambier in South Australia then across the Great Australian Bite to make land fall over Esperance in Western Australia.

About 200 nautical miles from Perth the flight deck informed us that we would begin our descent into Perth shortly. The weather in Perth was cold but with clear skies. Soon after the announcement the engines were throttled back and we began our descent. Soon after the Cabin crew was asked to prepare the cabin for landing and the cabin lights were switched back on. Our descent was long and slow and we cruised low over the hinterland South East of Perth. We banked gently to the right to make finals for runway 03.

The lights of Perth sparkled below and it was clear why Perth is called the city of lights. I could make out the lights of the Perth CBD very clearly. Touchdown was nice and firm and we rolled out on the runway so we could exit on the taxiway which is directly in front of the Domestic terminal. The taxi to the gate did not take very long and we docked at gate 2 of the Qantas Domestic terminal. Next to us in gate one was Qantas Boeing 737-838 VH-VXP.

Baggage claim was rather chaotic as usual for Perth. I had a lengthy wait for my bag. Again being tagged priority does not mean very much when you are traveling Economy. After collecting my bag I made my way outside into the cold Perth night and hopped onto the shuttle bus that would take me to the Long Term Carpark to collect my bag.

THE VERDICT

GROUND HANDLING: 6/10
Sydney Airport was busy as usual for a Friday Afternoon. Qantas Club was packed. But there was enough room to find a seat even though that task was quite difficult. Perth Airport was in typical chaos. Baggage claim was crowded and the car park outside the terminal was crazy as well.

AIRCRAFT: 8/10
At that time OGO was in much better condition than other 76s I had flown that year such as ZXE, OGB and OGE. No PTVs which you miss especially when your outbound flight is equipped with them and the movie choice was not that interesting.

CREW-SERVICE: 8/10
Friendly cabin crew who where quite attentive.

MEAL: 4/10
I should have gone with the Pasta. The Fish was probably the most bland aeroplane meal I have ever had. Lucky I gorged myself at Qantas Club.

ENTERTAINMENT: 4/10
Boring movie and like I mentioned before no PTVs and limited but good selection of radio programs. I wonder with the 787 delay meaning the 767s will be hanging around a lot longer, will Qantas upgrade them with PTVs? I mean there will be await penalty and off course it costs money to install them but Virgin is offering Live 2 Air TV on all their 737s.

X FACTOR: 3/5:
Good but not great typical old fashion domestic flight. The usual end of the week chaos experienced at both airports and traveling on a 767 transcon across the country is nothing new and could be easily forgotten. No memorable experience here. Thank goodness I took notes to write the report

I beleive a number of the 763 will be refitted with IFE the panasonic efx2 or something can't remember, along with the next batch of 738, i would presume that most of the 738 fleet would be refitted I wonder how many of the 763 would be though?
