HI everybody,

This is my very first trip report. I am very lazy and have never sat down to write about my trips. This one was a little special for me; it was my first time in Asia (I kept telling myself that Tel Aviv is in Asia... which is true... but anyways).

Please feel free to comment... If I ramble on... apologies.

Background:
I have just changed company, and moved to Zurich not long ago. My boss, however, lives in Hong Kong, so it was just a matter of time until I had to make it over there for our regular meetings (usually he travels to Zurich).

I had originally booked my trip in Air France, and this trip would have taken me to Platinum, but then the French pilots went on strike so I had to rebook my trip. My secretary was very keen on sending me through Turkey, which was OK, but for a few hundred francs more I could fly on Cathay, which is something I wanted to do for a long time. My friend (who works with me) was travelling with me and it took some convincing since he wanted to fly in Lufthansa.

First leg: ZRHCDG
I took the train really early that morning. I live in Horgen, so the airport is about 35 minutes away by train, not too bad. Once we got to the airport, we checked ourselves into the electronic machines and obtained our boarding pass and luggage tags. This process was almost idiot-proof; however, we could not obtain the boarding passes for our CDG-HKG leg.

We handed our luggage and went to the Swiss Business lounge. What can you say about this boring-no-view-of-the-runways-or-planes lounge? That it’s a little boring but not too bad. After a nice glass of OJ, we walked to the gate.

Equipment: Airbus Industrie A320 (Scheduled)
Equipment: Airbus Industrie A321 (Actual)

Departure:
Scheduled: Sat - Nov 15, 2008 9:10 AM
Actual: Sat - Nov 15, 2008 9:36 AM
Arrival:
Scheduled: Sat - Nov 15, 2008 10:30 AM
Actual: Sat - Nov 15, 2008 10:45 AM
Seat: 3A

This flight was as uneventful as they come. The food was so impressive I cannot remember what it was. But it wasn’t bad. The crew was friendly too. On a side note, of the 5 flights I have taken out of ZRH in the past two months, ALL of them have been late….

Here is a picture of how cloudy Zurich was that day.

Second leg: CDGZRH
Although we arrived a little late from ZRH, we still had enough time to navigate through CDG. We arrived at terminal 2B and had to go to 2A. Having lived in Paris for a while (and hated every second of it) I expected angry mobs as a result of the strike. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find just the normal mess for CDG. The line at the Cathay Pacific counter was huger… but not the business line, so once a very friendly pair of girls checked us in, we headed to what it must be the worst business lounge in the world. I know I am exaggerating and I know I’ll get hate mail for this, but come on! No bathroom? Dirty? Overcrowded? Just too much… We decided to walk to the gate so I could take pictures of the plane. Unfortunately, the windows were tainted or something, so I couldn’t.

Equipment: Boeing 747-400 Passenger (Scheduled)

Departure:
Scheduled: Sat - Nov 15, 2008 1:05 PM

Arrival:
Scheduled: Sun - Nov 16, 2008 7:30 AM
Actual: Sun - Nov 16, 2008 7:17 AM
Seat: 16K

I walked into the plane and there were no flight attendants at the door. I had to find my seat by myself (the horror!). The not-so-new business seats are really cool. True, you have to be able to turn your neck 360 degrees to see out the window (this is a joke) but they are REALLY comfortable.

Anyways, the food was great, the wine was excellent and my sleeping pill worked really well. It helped that even though I am not a small guy (1.84), I could really lie down in that seat. I do have to say that the flight attendants were nice but not incredibly nice. I was surprised. Not that I expected 21st century slaves like some other people expect, but some of them never even smiled once (I know it’s not a big deal, I expected differently from Cathay).

Ok, this is turning out to be a really long trip report. My apologies.

Of the trip back I’ll just say that on the way back we experienced THE scariest turbulences of my life on the AMS-ZRH leg. Oh, and when we were about to touch down… we went up again full throttle; the plane was shaking horribly bad. Of course my bags were completely wet when I got them.

Sigh

Nice report but I have trouble viewing the pics. Even when i manage to be able to click on the tiny black pic dots, just another large black dot opens up in the new window.

Am I doing something wrong or is this a technical glitch on the site? I'd like to see your pics.

Great TR! What did you think of the CX food and service in general?

I could see the pics for what it is worth.

It turned out the price was about CHF 4000 higher (for whatever reason).

I really don't know... sorry can't help you. Some people have been able to see them...

The food was good and so was the wine. I remember that I thought breakfast was HUGE, and that the food was well presented and yummy. Next time I'll remember to take pictures of the food. I guess I was too hungry so I started eating before remembering to document the meal  Smile

Service was really good, but not as I expected. Cannot really say what it was, but I found the flight attendants to be a little mechanical... It was better on the way back from Hong Kong to Amsterdam, but still.

Wow... you ARE good. I enjoyed it big time. It was my first time in Asia, Hong Kong is one of the most amazing places I've been to and got to fly Cathay Pacific, which was a big plus for me.
