For a change I wanted to try out Olympic Airlines again and see what the current service and product was like. I had heard mixed reports and was not expecting much. They are in the middle of a major re structuring plan and a proposed sell off. The following report is my experience.

DATE : 16/DEC/2008 ( 16/ΔEK/2008 )
FLIGHT : OA 269
ROUTE : ATHENS-LONDON ( ΑΘΗΝΑ - ΛΟΝΔΙΝΟ )
AIRLINE : OLYMPIC AIRLINES ( ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΚΕΣ ΑΕΡΟΓΡΑΜΜΕΣ )
SEAT : 5A
CLASS : BUSINESS
AIRCRAFT : A340 - 313X
REG: SX-DFA NAMED OLYMPIA ( ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑ )

I checked in at the Business class counter 2 hours before the flight.

I was a bit worried as I had 41 Kilos and my allowance was 30 kilos. I put my two suitcases on the scales and nothing was said. The girl said my seat had been pre assigned 5A and was I happy with that. I said yes and she then asked me if I had a OA Icarus FF number. I said yes but I had not used it for a long time. She said she would see if the number was in their system. After a few seconds she found it and said that she had put my number in the booking. I thanked her and proceeded to the Museum to take a look at the exibition.

After that I went through security. There are two lounges for OA at ATH. The Melina Mercouri lounge for intra schengen flights.

And then there is the Aristotle Onasiss lounge for outside

I went into the Onasiss and was greeted by a friendly young lady. She said ''welcome Mr .........I will call you when your flight is boarding. ''

Meeting room free to guests

Good selection of hot and cold food .

Internet corner

Coffee time. I love the branded Sugar and Napkins .

Beds !!!

Showers !!

Soon after the flight was called so I headed to the gate which was literally outside the lounge.

Boarding was announced and three people had started to board when a call came through to halt boarding. Apparantly there were ATC restrictions at LHR due to bad fog. An announcement was made and asked people to take a seat. More information would be available at 1400.

So I decided to take a walk and take some pics.

Free internet kiosks

At 1400 still no joy an announcement was made to say new information would be available at 1430. At that time an announcement was made for my name and 3 others to go to the desk. I went there and was told that they were very sorry for the delay and would I like to go back to the lounge. I said yes. So I went back to the lounge and as I entered the girl said ''London??'' I said yes and she waved me through.

Time for more snacks !

After 45 mins the lounge agent came to me and announced that the flight was boarding. She appologised for the delay and I said it was fine and not her fault. Nothing you can do about weather.

I proceeded to the gate where everyone had boarded already and I just walked on with two others.

I was greeted by two smiling crew who directed me to the left.

Pre take off drink was offered.

The crew came around with headphones and the FA advised that Channel 1 would show Frasier Xmas special and Channel 2 would show Mamma Mia.

Then drinks were offered with peanuts

I decided to watch Mamma Mia as I had never seen it .

Then time for the meal. The FA came along with a tray with three main courses. Salmon,Beef and Greek Mousakka. I thought that was very good for such a short flight. I went for the Greek dish.

The meal was lovely . Really tasty and quite a surprise.

The FA collected my tray and I told her the meal was really nice. She smiled and said would I like coffee . Which I said yes.

After a few minutes she came down with a mini tray.

The coffee came with chocolates . WOW is this Swiss LOL.... I really couldnt believe how good the service had been.

After a while the FA came down to me and asked me if I wanted another drink. I decided to have Orange juice.

Soon the pilot announced it was time to land and the crew made the cabin ready for landing.

We pulled to our gate and soon it was time to disembark. I thanked the crew for a wonderful flight and they wished me ''Kales Yiortes'' ( Happy Holidays ).

So thats the end of my report. I have to say I was very pleased with the service on Olympic and pleasantly surprised. I boarded expecting not too much if I am totally honest.

I hope that the future will be kind to OA as it just shows that when they put their minds to it Olympic can be as good as the rest.

I was hoping to get SX-DFC and then dedicate this TR to fellow Anetter and friend Bobby as I know how much he wants to fly OA A340 and loves Greece. So never mind even though it was SX-DFA I dedicate this to you my friend.

Thank you for reading and I am looking forward to your comments as usual.

Interesting report, nice to see and read about OA's A340.

The meal looks more like a (long-haul) Economy meal - and the presentation of the main course is pretty poor. However, the rest of the food doesn't look bad. What I find quite appalling is that dirty head rest cover...

Anyway, I wouldn't hesitate to try OA's A340.

Hi thanks for the reply. I didnt notice that but just looked at the pics again and its just the way my pics came out. It was not dirty I assure you.

As for the meal it was very filling and tasted good but the foil tray as with alot of other airlines makes the meal look bad. If they had have placed it on a plate it would make all the difference.
If I was given that meal in Longhaul Y I would be more than happy.

OA seems to be an airline that generates mixed reviews. Nice to see a good one. The meal does look tasty though the presentation could be better.

Hey OA260,

Wonderful trip report, all though I could not get the video's to work, but that could just be my computer. My dad flew home to Greece once on OA and loved the service, so hopefully someone can turn Olympic into a respectable carrier again. I would love to fly on the A343, and would not hesitate to book Olympic based on your report.

How were the seats compared to newer first class cabins?

Yes based on that experience no issues.

Cant compare its still comfortable but by todays standards , dated. Great for a European flight and best seat pitch and seat within Europe. But for longhaul they would need to put in flatbeds if and when any buyer decides what they want done and if the A340's will be kept.

Nice report Phil!

OA look good on the A340. The seats look like the same ones EI has in Premier on some of their planes. I wouldn't mind trying them out to ATH or perhaps JNB some time. Pity their LH route network has shrunk so much.

Hi, Phil,

great story.

I´am looking also earlier in the year for the OA A340, it´s also from time to time on the CDG route.
But I´ve decided for another big birdy on my return from ATH.
Time to post this story soon now.

Interesting pics as well.

Best wishes,

I flew on SX-DFA.

This is an EXCELLENT trip report!
I was way back in coach and the service was still fantastic.
Your trip report was just as I had imagined their Business Class service to be.
Superb!  Cool

The Business class lounge at ATH look spectacular. Someday when I have the extra ca$h, I will return to Greece on Olympic and I want to splurge and do business class, as long as it's on an A340.

'Olympia' (SX-DFA) was one of the first photos I viewed at Airliners.net when I discovered the site back in April 2000.

Wow I am jealous- you not only had all of Olympian Executive Class to yourself but you got to fly on a great bird! Since Alpha was the first of the OA A340s she almost looks brand new!  Wink

Pity it was not my Marathon but never the less we finally have a great TR on OA! I wonder what the OA bashers have to say about that!

Thanks for the dedication!  highfive   Big grin

Great report and pix. Seeing that Metaxa bottle brought some memories from this past summer when I visited my brother in Cyprus!!

I brought a bottle of Metaxa for my father in-law and to make the story short... he opened it on Labor day and the thing was gone in less than 2 hours!

I plan on visiting Athens and the greek islands for my honeymoon this summer... OA might be the airline of choice out of JFK... we'll wait and see...

Thanks again OA260 for the great report.

Thanks for the great TR,
I agree with the above about food service needs improvement, not that you really need upscale service on a 3 hour flight, but nowadays it is expected on a twin aisle business seat.
It looks pretty empty upfront, what were the loads like? Maybe it is in the body of the TR but I missed it.
Also is this 340 service daily on the London route? Is it ever 2x daily?

Thanks.

= I have to agree with PH here. The meal looked very much like a Y meal than something that should be offered in J. Also, I am not a fan of the presentation style - I mean, it is J - bring on the damn proper plates.

Do these 340's also serve their trans-atlantic and other long haul operations? I would not want to pay for those J seats!

Finally, what is up with airlines using these bland head-phones? J class should get noise-cancelling ones!

Saludos,

Yes, those A340s are on their trans-Atlantic flights and their J-seats are on par with other trans-Atlantic carriers.
I'd much rather fly ATH-JFK on an Olympic A30 instead of a Delta 767. That's for damn sure.
