Background:

I had booked this trip in November to visit family for the holidays. In December EK announced the complimentary upgrade between NZ & OZ.

Called up Skywards and spent 12,500 miles to upgrade to J one-way and got the free upgrade for the return J trip.

EK407 , AKL - MEL

I travelled to MEL with my parents. We had an awesome flight experience with EK .

Winnie (J cabin Supervisor), Bianca and the rest of the J Cabin Crew were excellent and made our journey real fun , so thanks heaps guys ! ^ .

The great service coupled with travelling with family also meant that I didnt have time for a full TR , but I did manage to click some pictures which will have to suffice as the TR for this leg ....

Dinner:

MAIN TR for EK406

This Trip report covers my solo return to AKL on the EK406.

Check-in:

The Chauffeur dropped me at MEL around 5:30 am . I wanted to get to the airport early to have a look around and check out the duty free plus EK's lounge.

Although it was early a few J pax were lined up to check-in with F counter free as the staff was chatting to the Supervisor .... I caught her eye as I walked up and she waved me to her counter ... Yaay saved 3 mins Big grin

Check-in was real quick and I asked her about the flight loads for F & J . Both were busy with J looking nearly full and F half full.

Whilst checking-in online the previous day, I couldnt get my desired 7A seat. So requested for the same with her again but it was taken and she couldnt re-assign it so resigned myself to spending the flight in the busier main J cabin.  Sad

Security:

After checking-in walked to the Departures & Security and was surprised to see it was closed and would only be open at 6 AM . I had to sit outside in the general airport area along with a few other early pax who were also waiting.

Finally at 6:03 AM the door opened and people were allowed through  ... Oh well at least it was a first for me ..... the first person to be checked through security in an Airport

EK MEL Lounge:

http://i43.tinypic.com/24glmiu.jpg

Was greeted warmly on my entry by Anne .....

http://i42.tinypic.com/110ys0l.jpg

Anne had a pleasant surprise for me .... I had been upgraded to F which was very good news for me as I wasn't looking forward to the busy J cabin.

http://i44.tinypic.com/14tk6a.jpg

I was given an Express Departure Card which I didnt use as there was no queue .. As she took my Lounge invitation Anne asked for dep card back as they recycle these.

I made my usual request and asked for both the invitation and dep card as souvenirs to which she obliged with a smile ... thanks Anne !  Smile

My lounge brekky:

I was still feeling peckish so had another few Veuve flutes with mixed nuts as I enjoyed the view from the lounge.

Boarding:

EK's lounge is conveniently located right above the gate 11 so when it was time to board it's just a ride down the escalator and then a short walk to the gate.

The announcement in the lounge was made at the right time so we can just walk straight onto the plane rather than reach the gate and be asked to wait till the flight is ready to board (like in DXB).

They took the bigger part of the BP at the gate leaving me with the lil stub which I hate ... Anyone know why they cant give us the bigger part like they do in N ?

The ground staff opened for the left L1 gate door for the F pax ... Didnt see any J pax being let through this door and bridge.

F pax walked through a separate part all the way to the aircraft.

EK406 , The Flight:

Was met at the door by purser Vivek who was very welcoming and later I was lucky to get a brilliant FA too , Vanessa.

Both Vivek & Vanessa looked after the F pax really well and were attentive even though the F cabin was quite busy being half full.

F seat :

The lil gold levers on the arm rests are to lower the arm rests for a larger seat base and also make it easy to get out of the chair should the meal table already be set-up

View with Suite Doors Closed

So with the doors closed one can really have a good cosy private flight experience ... of course being the good F pax that I am, I made sure I had a full glass of Dom and munchies before I shut the door  Wink

Breakfast:

I had had a long night out so the early morning start had made me quite hungry.

Vanessa was good enough to offer me both the Cheese plate and Omelette for Breakfast.

The Cheese was real fresh.

http://i41.tinypic.com/29nuujn.jpg

and Omelette really fluffy and Yummy too!

To finish a freshly brewed Dopio Espresso  Smile

My glass was kept topped up quite well by the cabin crew .... so that meant a fair few rounds of Dom with warm mixed nuts through-out the rest of the flight .... Of course this made me a very happy camper Big grin

Final thoughts:

I thoroughly enjoyed my entire flight experience with EK once again.

The Chauffeur ride was early, Check-in smooth. Lounge was spotless and had a good breakfast and wines selection. Cabin Crew were brilliant & attentive , so ...

Thank you and Well Done Emirates  Smile

Great report, thank you. The privacy of the seat and the meals both looked very good. Emirates gets mixed reviews on here but it seems your experience was at the top of the range. Happy New Year.

The ground staff opened for the left L1 gate door for the F pax ... Didnt see any J pax being let through this door and bridge.

The main reason why I think we keep the larger section is to make it easier incase there is a problem with boarding much easier to count the larger part and search for missing ones. Also probably force of habbit as the older scanners used to give back the larger part also, now we have very crap ones where we have to tear them then feed however they are slow and frequently miss a bp.

We dont let J pax through the first bridge on the airbus as the more people tramps through not only does it make it harder for the crew but also the doors on the suites are relativly fragile they can break easily if a bag or something get caught on them.

Hi Smi0006 ... Thanks for your replies as I've seen the gate staff tear the BP so good to know why they do this

Ditto for the boarding as once they fed my F BP through and gave me the lil stub the gate staff went and used her security key to unlock the doors to L1 bridge ... tight security for them doors eh ?!

Cheers

They were indeed .... My camera's battery was running low and it was a short flight so couldnt fit more pictures in ... The flight time is always a problem when flying EK premium as their meal service is so comprehensive & elaborate it takes up a good portion of the flight !

I'll click more pics in my upcoming F flight in the B77W

Nice report and pictures, thanks for sharing.

Were both flights operated by the 345?

- I really don't get the point of these cards, surely the F, J or FF status is sufficient info?

Yup and J seats on the A345 are not the best EK has so was quite happy to get F on the way back Big grin

When I went through security I saw 2 mazes so I assume one was for the premium pax or Exp Dep ppl and the other for non-prem pax ... As it was quite early and I was one of the first to get through there was no rush but at other times I'm sure it gets real busy so the cards must come in handy.

The FF status prolly wont count as these only hold water at the check in desk ... but i guess the only place they do help when flying EK is in DXB

Also OZ is currently trialling the Express Departure system .. The back of the card has some info on 3 OZ airports trialling it ( maybe SYD BNE MEL) so it is a relatively new process maybe some-one else here can shed some more light  Smile

Nice TR again! A great read.

Do you have to have the doors open during take off and landing?

I love that last picture of Auckland, although you did just miss my house to the south a tiny bit more  Silly it still has my former school in it though! I can't wait for my 2nd EK encounter - and my first on the A380. I guess you do want to make the most of your time enjoying yourself rather than taking pictures.. And so would I however I'm getting myself into the mood of writing a TR as well as enjoying myself!

It's all about the destination AND the journey.

Ahh you must have slipped by someone then, technically, if boarding at gates nine first pax shouldn't have their bp feed it should be manually entered at the service desk 11A, so that they may be escorted to proceed down the 11B channel and then down to bridge one, unhindered lol but sometimes the red doesnt stick out enough or if the BP was issued from another port they are beige just like J and Y lol. Otherwise if someone has to leave to swipe it disrupts the flow and Y and J pax freak out and try to sneak past as they feel they feel they are missing out.

Lol Not that this is any of your fault! Just the poor and cramped layout of the gates, I wonder how QF goes with the A380 will be interesting how an A380 with transit pax would go!

Quoting NZ107 (Reply 7):

I think they have to be open but EK are pretty liberal with their F pax ...

Couple of things I noticed :

With the suite doors closed the FAs have to tip toe to look over as although the doors aren't that high they do a good job of blocking the cabin out ...

Also I think because of the suite doors the aisle is a bit on the narrow side as opposed to EK's Sky cruiser F cabins ... doesnt matter when you're in your suite though  Wink

Removing the exclusivity of being premium when they do this ... Also in my DXB-AKL trip in DXB they didnt give a separate lounge invitation the BP doubled as both. 1 less souvenir lol

Hmm that's odd as they normally have Dom in F ... Moet is for J  Wink

Also were you the only F pax ? .... If so then that might make sense as if there's no booked/scheduled F pax then that could explain the lack of F F&B for your upgrade.  Smile

Also forgot to ask before , was it the suites or the wider Sky cruiser seats for your flight ?

If the seat row config was 2 2 2 then it was the Sky cruiser or was it 1 2 1 with the suites ?

Cheers  Smile
