My girlfriend and I flew out to New Jersey for Christmas. I grew up in Northern Jersey and my family still resides there. Below is the report for our flights. The photos are all from the PHX-EWR segment since the return took place a night.

December 24, 2008
US Airways 687
Depart Phoenix: 9:45am
Arrive Newark: 4:22pm
Airbus A320
N659AW

My roommate dropped us off at Terminal 4 around 745am. We grabbed some food (mine from Burger King; hers from Einstein Bros) and ate before security. After eating we proceeded through security into TSA land.

We began boarding around 915am. I took 23F and my lovely lady took the middle seat.

We pushed a couple of minutes behind schedule but nothing too crazy. We taxied to 25L and took after a minimal wait.

I got to see #508 (the newest aircraft in the fleet and the first A321 for US Airways-West)

We crossed Tempe and Arizona State University

Then over Tempe/Mesa border

Then over the Superstitions and the Salt River area

Upon hitting 10k feet I whipped out my laptop and we watched Home Alone 2 until my laptop batter y died.

One the laptop died I put on my iPod and my girlfriend went to sleep.

The flight was very smooth with just slight turb as we crossed over some of the mountain ranges in eastern Arizona. I packed off to sleep for a while. And woke up as we were over eastern Ohio/Western Pennsylvania. It was quite cloudy below and soon enough we began our decent into the New York area.

The decent into Newark was smooth and slow. We broke out of the clouds over the Totowa area as we flew over Willowbrook mall.

CO 777 taxiing into position.

Would have been cool if I was able to see it coming and get a better shot.

December 28, 2008
US Airways 35
Depart Newark: 4:40pm (6:35pm due to delay)
Arrive Phoenix: 8:21pm (approx 10:30pm)
Airbus A320
N676AW

Our departure was delayed due to a late arriving aircraft from Charlotte because on winds in Newark. My girlfriend and I arrived at the airport around 3:15pm. Once the delay was posted we walked over to the American Bandstand for a beer. We sat down and heard the gate agent explain to connx pax that they were all going to miss their connections in Phoenix and that US Airways would not be providing comp hotel rooms.

Stinks for them and a reminded why you should avoid the last flight of the day when making a connection if you can.

We boarded around 620pm. I was in 21B while my girlfriend was in 13A. After a 45 minute taxi we took off on 22R. I remained awake until the first beverage service so I could purchase a bottle of wine. Once complete I fell asleep and woke up with approx. 3 hrs of flying left. We had a considerable tailwind on the PHX-EWR segment but the headwind was catching up with us on this flight.

I sat back listened to my iPod until we landed.

We landed and taxied to the gate. Coincidently we parked next to N659AW (our ride to New Jersey). Baggage claim took a little long but not bad. We jumped in a cab and headed home.

Hope you enjoyed.

I am kind of surprised by this..is Wind considered a weather factor for the Airline to NOT provide hotels? As a late/missed connex due to weather would permit them NOT to provide hotels, but..that raised my eyebrow. As a CSA for WN we would HOLD that flight, especially if ten or more was going to misconnect.

Anyhow great report bud and good pictures!

Alex

Yep only someone from N Jersey would recognize Totowa or the Willowbrook mall. I grew up and lived in Totowa and still have some family there in Little Falls. I havent been there in a few years. I miss a good pizza or a hot dog from Rutt's hut..Nice pics.

That sucks, I hate it when that happens (except if you don't WANT to sit next to each other of course...)

It surprises me that a US airline has a row 13 though.

ASU you probably miss your family here in New Jersey but there's no way you can miss these miserable Winters, this one has been colder and snowier earlier than it has been for the last 10 years. I think we're in for a big Winter this year, something we haven't had since '93,'94,'95 and especially '96.

I used to go to that Mall when I would visit my then Girlfriend now Wife at College (Montclair State), I bought a really cool North face jacket at the Macy's in the Willow Brook Mall.

Btw..

Nice catch with the photo of the new Red Bull MLS stadium being built in Harrison, it's really moving along fast.

I non-reved on the return. I booked a ticket on the PHX-EWR segment because it was cheaper and less of a headache than dealing with my girlfriend in NJ alone with my family if I got bumped.

It was like 45-55F when I was there. My poor GF lost her grandfather this week and is now back up in upstate New York where it is currently -8F and snowing. It was 71 here in Scottsdale today.

My mom and aunt are MSU alums. I wasn't sure what that was until my dad pointed it out on the drive to their house.

Good report and pictures,nice, thanks.

Shame you could not sit together on the return flight, but if you were no-reving, you have to sit where you are given a seat.

Thanks

Good report Matt!

I liked the pics, they were very nice. The seats also looked nice and comfy. Do US still charge for all drinks or have they dropped that now when the oil prices are down.

I could imagine that it would be tough not to drink anything on a 3-4 hour flight. The tray table advertisement looked very bad in my opinion, but it's not as bad as putting tiny ad stickers on the windows, or on the seat backs, ugh...

Thanks for posting.

We picked up a bottle of water in the terminal since they are still charging for drinks. Plus I like to drink water on 5 hour flight after I had a beer in the terminal and a glass on wine on the airplane.  Smile

No drinks for those flights really isn't that bad.
Just be glad there are not ads on the overhead bins.

Looking at your time of arrival at EWR, i'm gonna assume that CO 772 was flight 84 to TLV.

Many years ago, when this project was nothing but a dream and the Red Bull were still the MetroStars one of my best friends made some boisterous statements as to what he'd do if it ever got built. If we could only remember what he vowed to do, he'd have to pay up.

Good TR, but is it just me or is US coming across as a glorified LCC especially on domestic ops?
Cabin branding, no PTVs on a/c such as the 319/320/321.....how can they be on par with an airline like CO? But very good quality photos nonetheless...

I agree. Living in the PHX area US is generally my only choice so I have gotten used to them. I recently flew PHX-JFK on Delta and was pretty blown away at what I have been missing.
