Hello to everyone and welcome to this Trip Report. Its been a long ago since I don’t write one of this. The main reason? It was a very twisted year for me. First I moved from Venezuela in August to Miami to continue my college career. New town, new life and new beginning. For that reason this Trip Report originates in Miami and this is my journey to the country I left four months ago to spend the greatest holidays I ever had.

December 15th, 2008.
Flight: S31516
Aircraft: 757-200 YV-2243
ETD: 10:15
ATD: 11:40
ETA: 14:00
ATA: 15:10
Seat: 19F

And the day finally arrived. I was way excited since the night before. I just wanted to arrive to se my family and friends again after being away from them for 4 months. I woke up at 6:00 and my friend Aldo came at 6:30 to pick me up. We drove to MIA without any complications and at 7:25 I was already in the not so long Check In line of SBA airlines at the concourse F.

I checked my two bags without any problems and the very kind woman of the counter gave me my boarding pass and indicated me that the flight was on time so I had to be at the gate at 9:15 for boarding. I must say that SBA airlines have a great baggage policy (2 pieces of 32 kilos or 70.4 lbs each).

Here are some pictures of the counters:

After a very fast and well organized check in, I went with my friend to La Carreta to have some Cuban coffee and an Empanada. Minutes later around 8:00 I decided to enter to the Concourse F to begin the journey to the assigned gate.

The TSA line was really short. I passed it without any problem and I began to walk the long concourse. Here are the pictures while I was walking.

The long concourse:

The airport screen, indicating that my flight was 15 minutes late:

Finally after walking for around 10 minutes I arrived to the departure hall. This was my second time in Miami’s concourse F (Always been in A, C, D, E and J) and must say that this terminal is begging for a make up soon. It keeps the vintage style of Miami.

I sat down near my gate and took out my ipod to let the time pass as the plane hadn’t arrived from CCS yet. While I was listening to my ipod I took some pictures of what I was doing.

The gate F15

My Boarding Pass

Oh! Look who is in the cover!!!

At 9:40 the plane arrived to the gate, a good signal to tell me that the flight was a little bit delayed. I waited till the boarding time and at 10:40 boarding was called. As I was on row 19 I had to wait to the last group.

The Reddy one in the gate. Stunning don’t you think?

Disaster on the cabin. The baggage didn’t fit in the bins and the flight was overloaded.

Wing view. A little dirty.

Once I sat down at my assigned seat I started to laugh. The lady behind me (The one that you will hear at the landing video) was complaining about everything. Some quotes: “THIS IS WHY I ONLY FLY IN AA OR LAN” , “THIS #$%&* AIRLINEEEE…I HATE IIIIT“ , “THIS IS WHY THE PLANES ARE REEEED…BECAUSE CHAVEZ BOUGHT THIS S…..T”. At first it was funny, but minutes later I was desperate about her complaining because I personally think that the delay wasn’t that bad. In fact the delay was because the plane was so over packed that they had to check in a lot of hand bags.

Leg Room:

At 11:20 doors were closed and the security demonstration started. We taxied towards runway 12 for our departure. And at 11:40 the takeoff roll started here is a picture of the taxing and the video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLYCWET87kw

We rocketed out of town like a bullet. Soon we were over the Bahamas and the cruising altitude was reached. At 12:50 service started. As the TV’s don’t work in SBA’s flights I decided to order a complete meal which was really nice. It was a Breaded Chicken with mashed potatoes and green vegetables, a macaroni salad as a side, a cheesecake as a dessert and a Cuba Libre as a drink. Everything was awesome and the crew was more than friendly with the service.

After eating all my lunch, I started to talk to the girl next to my seat to kill the remaining time. Suddenly I noticed that in business was traveling the Capt. Alvarez (The CEO of SBA). As I had the magazine in my hands I decided to go with a FA to talk to him. He was very friendly and with a great sense of humor. He signed my magazine and after that I returned to my seat. At 14:45 we start our approach to CCS. It happened really fast and here is the video of the touch down at 15:10 local time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR4Klo3vsfg

We parked at the remote stand of CCS and finally I was in my hometown for Christmas. The immigration process was really fast and the baggage recovery was uneventful.

After spending 3 weeks in my amazing country it was time to go back to Miami and here starts the second and better part of this trip report.

January 4th, 2009.
Flight: S31515
Aircraft: 757-200 YV-2243
ETD: 06:00
ATD: 06:40
ETA: 08:45
ATA: 09:10
Seat: 14F then 25D then 6F

As this flight was early in the morning my dad woke me up at 2:20 to go straight to the airport without any complications. We arrived to the newly renovated counters of SBA at 3:15 and the queue was pretty short compared with the AA one. I checked in my two suitcases at 3:40 and with my boarding pass in my hands I decided to take a coffee with my parents before going to the gate.

At 4:15 I decided to go inside. I said goodbye to my dad and my mom and went directly to gate 15 to wait for boarding. Here are some pictures of the hall.

VIP Room of SBA airlines.

http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/9017/p1030879oa8.jpg

At 5:30 boarding was called. As there were only a very few passengers in the waiting room and the flight was nearly to its departure time, they allowed us to board without any row order. For my surprise when I went inside the plane I saw a very good friend of mine that is a crew member of SBA. We started to talk and he told me that Business was relatively empty so he will be able to change me to business but that they will give me the service of coach. I couldn’t complain, a more comfortable seat for this flight and for free.

At 6:25 doors were closed and my friend came to my seat and told me that in order to change me after the departure it was better that I change myself from 14F to 25D which was in an emergency exit in front of his jump seat. I followed his orders and I change to the emergency exit here are the pictures of those moments.

At 14F

At 25D

My friend’s seat

My friend enjoying his work LOL

At 6:40 we took off from CCS and we were bounded to MIA. Soon after the takeoff the plane shacked a little bit because there was a little storm near the coast of Caracas. When the seat belt sign turned off my friend took me to business. Here are the pictures of the J cabin in SBA airlines 757.

http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/8736/p1030888wi7.jpg

After that service started. This time you could choose between a cheese Quiche or an Omelet. I chose the omelet. It was really tasty.

After that I took a huge nap and at 8:45 our final approach to Miami began. Here are the pictures and the video.

FIU CAMPUS!!!

After the touchdown and the taxing I was the third person to go out of the plane. Here is a picture I took while I was walking through the terminal.

I hope you enjoy this TR and I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year to all of you.

Even though the title of this TR is a bit CONFUSING, given the fact I know you pretty well, it was awesome! LOL

I've been waiting for a TR on SBA, definitely a good option to go down to CCS (except for the people like the yelling lady who are more than common on these type of flights).

Let's see if I can book myself on another flight and have Carlos as a FA too.

Congrats tavo!

Cheers

very cool report. I love seeing these reports on not very common airlines. The first class seats look exactly like the ones on United 757s, maybe this plane used to fly for UA?

Great pictures and thank you for sharing.

You beat me to it... and the coach seats are ex-Iberia or Aerolineas Argentinas!

But the aircraft on the report started life 21 years ago with Air Europe, and stints with Avianca, LAB, China Southern, Canada3000, et al... Interesting pedigree!

Thanks for a wonderful trip report. I am a fan of uncovered airlines and routings and SBA is definitely uncommon. Seems like their product has definitely improved ... now only if they can improve their reliability. I flew them once ... and thought never again. Speaking of Venezuelan aviation, I am completely stranded at JFK. I cannot fly ANY flight in ANY class to come home tomorrow (Friday, Jan 9). S3 via MIA is booked solid until the 15th; CO via IAH is oversold; AA nonstop is oversold; trying to connect via BOG and it seems that BOG-CCS is zeroed out for all flights on the 10th, and so is CM. Hell, even MDE-CCS is zeroed out for the 10th. Uuugh. Waitlisted on BW on 10th on POS-CCS ... trying to get via JFK-POS on 9th. And, I cannot seem to get S3 to confirm AUA-CCS on the 9th. Any suggestions out there to get home? I need to be back by noon ...

A.

How are TVs and meals related? And are the meals free of charge in Economy?

Hey, Gustavo,

a real interesting read and also pix.

While I know MIA, it seems that Santa Barbara is not that much covered here with trip reports.
Good to read that your friend managed the upgrade, always nice.

Nice to get the upgrade on the return, though the legrooms looks pretty poor for J, would have been interesting to see the J food offerings.

Nice report.

I have never heard on SBA Airlines before, though they seemed like a good airline. Are they a LCC?
The seats looked comfy, and the legroom in Y looked great. The J seats looked exactly the same as on UA, it wouldn't surprise me if they bought them from UA. I guess that UA are trying to get rid of the old J seats as they are putting new ones in their long haul planes.

The food looked very nice, though was it complimentary, or did they charge for it?

Thanks for this great trip report Cybergus. I loved the photos in particular. What stood out was the photo of the departures board in MIA that listed Cienfuegos as a destination and where the flight there departed from. As Cienfuegos is in Cuba and those flights are operated under very restricted circumstances it is interesting that they are now publicly displayed like that.

Hopefully SBA will do well to fly the Venezuelan flag high wherever it goes. The service looks quite good.

797, what's so wrong with good old POS? The POS - CCS leg is however very heavily booked these days - only BW flies it with a Dash 8 daily. It seems as though BW is getting a lot of connecting traffic from CCS on this service.

Thanks again. Saludos.

Looks like a made up cabin with seats from other airlines; Coach (IB) and First (UA)...I wonder who used to own that 757, original standard O/H bins not expanded, not surprised the luggage did not fit, all paxs carrying oversized luggage full of shopping goods. And the generic plastic cups...tacky!

Thanks Kike. Yes SBA has become a good option to go to our home. In fact if you're planning to do some shopping the 32 kilos that they offer per baggage are the solution. Lol about the color thing!! hahaha.

Quoting N104UA (Reply 2):
Those F seats look exactly like UA has in the A320/319 B737 and B 757 or is it just me?

Thanks for reading. Yes in fact they are, but the plane never flew for UA. Is just that SBA 757 are retrofited here in MIA, and they chose the seats of UA for this plane and for the other 757 the first class seats are identical to the old AV ones.

Quoting PHLstudent (Reply 3):

Yes, they have put a lot of effort in their service. In fact I really think that they left AA way behind in service related. Thanks for reading.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 8):

Well as their TV's are not working at all for now they make a great inprovement in the service. They offer you free alcohol (Whiskey, Wine, Rum, Beer, etc) and a complete meal in Y class. And the business service is even better.

They are a good airline trying to become the best airline in the MIA-CCS market. They are no LCC at all, in fact they don't charge you extra for a complete meal and free alcoholic drinks.

Gustavo,

Excellent trip report! thanks for sharing  Smile Great pics, nice videos and lots of details of your MIA-CCS-MIA trip.

It's nice to see a TR from S3 after the FAA allowed Venezuelan airlines to fly their own metal and crew into the USA.

Here's the link to the what used to to be the only Santa Barbara Airlines TR in a.net. I wrote it almost 4 years ago, when S3 was celebrating 1 year of operations into MIA.
