This is a brief trip report of a recent non-revenue trip to Paris aboard Continental Airlines, EWR-CDG-EWR.

My friend and I decided to spend a week in Paris to enjoy the winter sights and experience the City of Lights under a snow-covered landscape. We started in Los Angeles (LAX) and with difficult loads to EWR, I routed us LAX-CLE-EWR.

Continental currently operates three flights a day on Sundays between EWR and CDG – the first flight is a 777 followed by two 757 flights. On this day, the 777 flight was booked at 15 seats out of 50 in the BusinessFirst cabin, perfect for non-revenue travel!

CO56 B777 EWR-CDG
Flight Time: 6h 35m
Seats: 3K and 3L

After receiving our boarding passes in 8A and 8B, we ran to the President’s Club for a few cocktails before boarding commenced a few minutes before 1700L. As we boarded, the gate agent changed our seat assignments to 3K and 3L – better seats in my opinion, because I’m not a fan of bulkhead seats with limited legroom.

Once aboard, flight attendants took our coats and served champagne while providing amenity kits and menus. A quick departure from 22L was timely, and we commenced a right turn on the Newark 7 departure to a northeasterly heading, right over Manhattan.

At cruise, dinner service started, and the following photos and descriptions should illustrate another great meal in CO’s BusinessFirst cabin:

HOT APPETIZER CART
A demitasse of seafood bisque with lump crabmeat
accompanied by mini beef Wellington

Needless to say, the meal was very enjoyable and met typical CO standards for BusinessFirst food. Prior to arrival, I took a photo of the BusinessFirst cabin:

CO139 B757 CDG-EWR
Flight Time: 8h 17m
Seats: 4A and 4B

We departed Friday, January 9 on CO139, the 1200L flight back to EWR. Again, BusinessFirst was empty as it was only booked at 5 seats out of 16. Our aircraft was a late arrival from EWR, so our boarding and pushback was delayed by approximately 20 minutes. Boarding was quick and easy, and we took our seats in the last row of BusinessFirst, seats 4A and 4B.

We pushed back from gate A49, parked in between an American 763 and a Continental 764 to IAH. Here are a few photos on the taxi:

Taxi to runway 9R was a brief 10 minutes, and we departed to the east and then commenced a left turn to a northwesterly heading. I took a few photos on the departure of the French countryside – beautiful snow-covered land!

Once at cruise, the flight attendants started the lunch service, another great Continental meal!

It was a great conclusion to a great trip. Thanks again to the kind Continental crews for their hospitality, and of course, a huge thanks to the French people for welcoming us to their country. I think I’m ready for my next trip  Smile

Great trip report about my airline of choice. That steak looks a bit under done for my taste though! I could probably make do with those appetizers though - yum. And I do wonder how the cheeseburger goes over on an international flight (though I personally love 'em).

CO food in Business seems to be good. But the food in economy to / from Europe is a disaster. They should at least try to make a small effort to improve it.

Cheeseburger was decent. Nothing special but probably the best burger I've had for airplane food  Smile

It was more than enough food. I've always been impressed with the quantity of food served in CO BusinessFirst. I have a decent appetite yet often times have trouble finishing all the food. With experience, I now board the aircraft after starving myself for many hours. That's the only way I can completely finish the meals!

I like my steaks medium-rare, and lately, they've managed to cook them that way. I can't eat a piece of over-cooked rubber, but interestingly, the flight attendant offered to further cook my steak if it wasn't well-done enough. For me, it was perfect.

No, not the same. I've had the domestic Y burgers on countless occasions, and this CDG-EWR burger was certainly different.

Agreed. I have limited experiences to only U.S. carriers including DL BusinessElite, UA Business, US Envoy and NW World Business Class. Of these products, in my opinion, CO BusinessFirst has the best-tasting and the most quantity of food. I'm always full of food and liquor after each meal  Smile

I flew EWR-ZRH and LGW-EWR in coach this summer and thought the food was very, very good. My mom flew EWR-GVA-EWR a few months ago and agreed with me. Between my two flights, I had lasagna, a pizza thing, and a chicken dish, and they were all great.

Maybe just a bad set of flights you had? Under-served due to a delay or something, maybe.

Nice report and pictures, thanks for sharing with us.

The food looks ok, well some of it, though I really am not happy with the idea of a cheese burger being served in business class, really lacks class.

Well, what about BA serving bacon rolls in Club World? Not exactly haute cuisine either, more like 'greasy spoon', but the British passengers seem to like it. You fly BA to the UK, you get bacon rolls. You fly CO to the US, you get a cheeseburger.

Unlike BA's Bacon Rolls that are a permanent fixture, CO does rotate their menu's, so whilst it's a cheeseburger this month, it's a hot chicken sandwich next month, etc. Also, the cheeseburger is actually an Aberdeen Angus burger, and not your average 99p Miccy-D's cheap 'n' cheerful poundsaver special.

Still, aesthetically, it does look a bit dodgy, and I guess that's what you're getting at!

No, they aren't (although I do love those!).
