The Emirates EK413 A380 Trip Report

http://i39.tinypic.com/4rs2l3.jpg

02 - 02 - 09

The day I was looking forward to finally arrived and boy was I excited !

Today I would be on the Inaugural A380 flight out of Auckland, New Zealand with My Favourite Airline - EMIRATES !

I arrived at AKL in my chauffeur driven Caprice at 15:00 , checked in for the EK413 and made my way to the lounge ...

As I was early (or so I thought) I grabbed some lunch and just as I was about to dig in ..... I looked up at the Flight Info Screen and saw this ....

http://i41.tinypic.com/ivlche.jpg

Promptly asked the passing reception staff what was with the weird flight number , She told me that the A380 is actually parked right now at Gate 15 for a private media tour and Arrival Reception.

Sooo ... Finished my quick snack

http://i43.tinypic.com/2vbttle.jpg

And left the lounge to go have a look at my ride to SYD, at Boarding Gate 15 .

Aha ..... can just make out the huge tail ...

A little closer ....

And then finally .... the Beautiful EMIRATES AE - 6DD

The size of the plane can only really be appreciated , when you're actually looking at it in full view and all I can say is WOW !

http://i43.tinypic.com/285bbo.jpg

As I was clicking these pictures , the media were making their way to the AKL lounge after the arrival reception and their private tour of the plane.

I joined them back at the lounge and also clicked some pictures of the A380 model presented to AKL lounge.

The EK lounge was packed and in a few sections there was standing room only ....

Departure was delayed by nearly an hour because of the Reception and private tour so we started out from the lounge at around 18:50 for our EK413 , which was patiently waiting for us at Gate 15.

Flight Load

The loads in the premium cabins were full !

F was showing half full availability till this weekend when suddenly all but one seat was left .This was still not taken when had checked in. But not sure if it was actually left empty during the flight.

J was pretty much full as well but it had 90% of the media & EK staff etc so not sure how many revenue seats there were.

Y was maybe half to 2/3rds full.

Poised for Take- Off

The take-off was nothing like any other I'd experienced before ...

The run was smooth and very powerful but still far less noisy than all the planes I've been in.

1 glass of Dom for each hand ... it doesnt get any better than this Big grin

http://i41.tinypic.com/1zc31hl.jpg

I decided to have my meal first, then go for a stroll before my shower.

This allowed me to arrange it so I could get more time in the Spa  Wink

Dinner was served on the short hop across the Tasman , I chose the following:

Appetiser:

Cajun spiced Lamb Loin with char-grilled veges & beetroot relish

http://i39.tinypic.com/24e6mx2.jpg

Soup:

Moroccan Tomato Soup

http://i43.tinypic.com/6srxxe.jpg

Main Course:

Grilled Beef Tenderloin topped with gratinated Kikorangi blue Cheese

http://i42.tinypic.com/scw41v.jpg

Dessert:

Gourmet Mini Desserts of Fig & Vanilla Mascarpone , Chocolate Mousse and Pont Royal Cake

http://i42.tinypic.com/w9w3n6.jpg

The entire meal was very good , right from the tender lamb loin , the thick hearty tasty soup , the succulent & juicy tenderloin to the creamy mousse ... The meal inspired me to stretch my legs a little so took a walk down to the Pub ... or in this instance ....

The Business Class Bar

http://i44.tinypic.com/1remgm.jpg

http://i39.tinypic.com/2j14mt4.jpg

http://i42.tinypic.com/2vsi5nr.jpg

The bar had a great vibe and the ambience was exactly like a real-life bar

Needless to say, I enjoyed my time there until I remembered it was time for my shower ... Big grin

Shower at 40,000 feet:

http://i39.tinypic.com/fvixs6.jpg

As soon as I was back at my seat , the lovely F FA came and told me that my spa was ready and to take all the time I needed.

So I was all set to have a relaxing 30 mins .... but it ended up being 45 mins Big grin

Firstly, the pictures dont do the spa room enough justice ..

Although I had clicked pics of the left during my Mini- Tour and had a vague idea of how it might be inside with the doors closed ...

I was still expecting a cramped spa and even more tiny shower cubicle but when I locked the door and turned around .... Boy was I wrong !!!

I was standing approx 1/3 way into the Spa room for these pics below so hope it gives you the sense of space that they've given the F pax ...

http://i39.tinypic.com/2h3o4gl.jpg

http://i40.tinypic.com/wb3upi.jpg

http://i41.tinypic.com/2s7gbc0.jpg

http://i39.tinypic.com/axg27t.jpg

So once inside there's loads of room to move about and if you looked closely above, there's even a flight map to keep you occupied whilst on the John !

The shower cubicle was not huge but it was not tiny either.. There was sufficient space to reach all the needed parts Big grin

A lot of us were wondering what would happen in case of turbulence ... And for that. there's also a seat inside with a belt that you can use to secure yourself to avoid being thrown about.

The shower was an interesting experience but once I finished .... the novelty wore off straight away as I was towelling myself dry , So not sure it was needed for the short 3 hr flight.

However I can definitely see it being more useful on the longer DXB-SYD leg as I imagine it would be quite refreshing to have the added luxury of taking the quick shower after you've woken up from resting on route.

As mentioned , I took my time in there and so when I came out it was already time for our descent into Sydney.

And that meant my time on this EK A380 flight was drawing to a close ... but luckily I still have my return flight to look forward to .... which is Ek's first Boeing 777-200LR flight into AKLBig grin

My next trip on the EK A380 upcoming F trip where I can experience it long haul on both my in-bound and out-bound legs so another thing to keep me going !

Flight Experience:

Having 14 seats in F makes for quite a busy and non-exclusive feel ... There are 4 FAs so service was top notch but I guess I've been used to much lighter F loads so noticed the difference.

I've got to hand it to the Cabin Crew , they were absolutely wonderful and managed to give us a great service in F whilst interacting with us and answering all the different questions the F pax had.

The wine list is better on the A380 than it's other flights. So long haul travel will be very pleasant (hic)

And as this flight was full of media and being the Inaugural flight I reckon on the normal flights the whole F experience will be awesome with the 4 FAs and being able to have a nice long walk around the whole plane will be good for the appetite too  Wink

On that note , I hope you enjoyed my inaugural A380 flight experience from AKL with Emirates.

Thanks for reading and as always your feedback is appreciated.

Cheers,

Oh wow!!! What a report! Thank you so much. You're lucky to have made that flight. I can't wait to fly on an A380, though I doubt I can afford a Business Class ticket on an F/O's salary... Still that bar is great. I think I wouldn't move from there for the entire duration of the flight (excluding times when I really MUST be seated)  Smile

Is there a time limit you ca stay at the bar?

Just correcting your registration of it: it is A6-EDD.

I think it's part of most airlines - they give those who want to choose seats the opportunity and then fill the rest of the seats a few days out. I checked on Saturday and to my surprise Y only had about 30 seats vacant from being 1/4 full the days before!

Good that you got to view the rest of the plane - I hear it was closed off for J class passengers to go and visit the Y cabin.

You got those welcoming chocolates as well! I really wish they added another touch to being the first A380 flight of theirs down under but it wasn't to be.

Thanks for sharing! Keep an eye out for mine sometime later..

Regards,
Nicholas

Oh my god... isn't the starboard wingtip a little too close to the terminal building?!

Wow this reports cements that EK is indeed top tiered in their offerings. This comes at a crucial time when a lot of other airlines are either cutting back on their offerings, or revealing supposedly "new" products that are just a copy of present generation's re-upholstered.

Although I have seen EK's premium products MANY times (seen is, not tried it) they still look good to me. However I still hope they would one day move away from the grey/gold combo they seem to like so much.

Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

No it's not: just deceptively close due to the shadows. Take a look at the picture I took as I disembarked:

Funny story actually ... I left my seat for the tour , then mid-way down the stairs thought it prudent to take my BP with me just in case ... And sure enough as I reached the end of the last Y cabin and climbed the stairs ... the J cabin crew were startled by my presence so I asked if I could please have a look around ... I could tell by the developing expression that it would be a polite No so quickly whipped out my BP and she was like ok let me see where you're seated and then " oh l Sure Mr EK_Flyer please go ahead with a beautiful smile "  Smile

EK definitely have a strong F product but I would liked them to have introduced something new & exclusive on their A380 suites . They could have then standardised the new A380 F on all their future A380s

Wow, great Trip Report. I have to admit, the food selection in first always leaves me feeling a bit blah (mainly cos I am a fussy eater and have plainer tastes). But that meal looked delicious. tomato soup,,,my fave...if only more airlines would offer tomato instead of elk and asparagus soup  Smile

Glad you enjoyed your first A380 flight, she really is a super plane on which to travel in F & J though I'm not sure I'd like to travel economy with EK's layout when it's full!

I flew QF's A380 yesterday, now flown all 3 operators of the bird, TR due up soon.

Thanks for covering this inaugural flight. Some really great insights into the famed shower rooms. Do the 'shower room cleaners' wear didn't uniforms from the rest of the crew? Are they cabin crew rostered to clean the shower rooms or are they specially hired cleaners?

The bar area looks really cool, but it does mean that additional catering and drinks (translation: additional weight) need to be uplifted to cater specially to those who hang out at the bar.

Judging from the picture, EK's new J class on the A380 looks a little cramp. How many J seats are there, and how many crew are serving in J class?

The EK A380 is a great way to fly but I did notice a few things I didnt like .. however being a media event I'm guessing most of those will be gone on a regular flight .

I wish had squeezed in some time to try out the J seat to see what it would be like but the cabin was very busy  Sad

Yup the 2 shower girls were only there for the showers plus to help i n the F bar set-up so they werent really Cabin crew and only stayed in the F bar area atop the stairs. I did ntice another cabin crew helping F pax and answering questions sometimes when it was time for the pax to take their shower so might be 3 staff in total for the showers

There are around 75 seats in J and mind you the cabin does look real full with the amount of seats but sadly didnt get a chance to sit in the seat and judge them for myself so sorry cant give any further detail but then there's always Mark's & Roni's excellent TRs in J  Wink

Boy ... tight squeeze at the gate. There doesn't seem to be a lot of space between the wing and the terminal building.

It does look very close but that's due in part to th way the picture was taken  Wink

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 18):
Looks fantastic - I also like the variety of desserts

Quoting Akhmad (Reply 19):
What a lovely creative setting.

They were very good and so was the main but I couldnt click good pics of them as I was in a hurry mid-way through the meal cos there was so much to see and my shower time would be upcoming too !

Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 18):

What I find really interesting in the spa area is the screen with moving map!

This is right in front of the John so in case you forgot the newspaper there's something to keep you entertained lol !

Quoting Akhmad (Reply 19):
Wow!

The Spa also boasts a floor to ceiling mirror right behind the sink which really brightens up the place and gives the spa a more roomy feel.

Quoting Akhmad (Reply 19):

Your TR is just awesome. I enjoy it very much. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks Akhmad glad you enjoyed reading it and thank you for reading  Smile

Cheers !

Hey EKFlyer

Well done on your trip report!!! I love your subtle humour and simple writing style. Your wonderful TR have provided a great indication of what would a F class passenger expect on the Tasman route.

I think I must saw you in the Emirates lounge in AKL, although I am not entirely sure who you are. You've actually pictured me a few times in the following pics

Would love to come and say hello if only we knew each other !!

Congratulations again on making the inaugural and posting a terrific TR to share with us.

Cheers

Hi Guys

Just thought I'd share this post by PotatoSaladz as it shows the Crew Work Station on the EK A380.

Must take some time to check it out on my next trip !

Cheers

Quoting PotatoSaladz on FT :
I saw an interesting online slideshow about the technology on the A380. It talks about the hidden cameras, the showers and the planes electronic brain, with some nice pics to boot!

Doesn't have any of the planes taking off though, which is a bit of a bummer...

It's over here, but the funny thing is it isn't on a travel site.
