The first quarter of 2009 has presented me with the opperunity to do some research in Malaysia, and this required the need for me to travel between Singapore and Kuala Lumper on weekly basis. I could have taken a coach from Singapore, but i thought i would take the oppertunity to fly instead. In total i will doing 10 more of such runs in the comming months. Here is a trip report of my first trip, although there have been other posts on this route i havent seen one includes SilkAir, hope you enjoy it.

Leg 1:
02 Feb 09
MI332 SIN-KUL - Y Class
ETD: 07:10
ETA: 08:05
A320

I seem to have a habit of leaving from Changi airport on early morning flights. Arrived at T2 around 5:30am, thought it might be a good oppertunity to get some breakfast at the lounge before preparing for a long day of interviews. T2 was beautifully lit up but there was this overall sense of emptiness in the terminal. Proceeded directly to collect my boarding pass seat 8A, rather then going to the SQ counters as usual i decied this time to check out the dedicated SilkAir counter. There was hardly any q for check-in, and the agent on duty diligently checked me in, i was even issued with the return boarding card.

After immigration i proceed into T2, the place was like a ghost town, majority of the shops where closed, well it was only 6am.

Made my way to the SATS premier lounge in T2, as this was the closest to the gate. I have used this lounge on several occassion and although it can often get crowded, especially as it serves a number of different airlines. This time it was relatively empty though, which was good for me. At times there can be decent collection of food here as was the case this time. I settled down into a quite corner and tucked into the fried chicken, saugages and scrambled eggs all washed down with some organge juice.

Before long it was time to head to gate E6 for boarding. Once clearing security at the gate i headed straight to the areo bridge. Sorry for the no pictures or details of the aircraft, as it was too dark at this hour for my camera to take any decent shots. Was welecomed on board and directed to my seat by the lovely FA. The first that hits you about the SilkAir cabin in the colour of seats, at 6:50am they seem awfully bright. I soon relaised that the flight was actually completely full in Y class. As most people where flying for business purposes, the overhead luggage bins were getting full and quickly. At one point there was some minor disagreements between some passanges whom refused to have their luggage checked in. Luckily i was able to manage to squeeze my laptop bag in.

A really nice touch was the FA's comming around and offerring newspapers to passengers, thought this was something they would do for J class passengers on such short flights. After the FA's sorted out passengers luggage we began our push back and taxi and finally we where on our way to KL. Surprisingly, despite the cabin being at full capacity it was actually very quite, maybe everyone was catching up on some lost sleep. Once the seat belt sign was off the FA's immediatly began their cabin service comming around with drinks or coffee,

Before long the first officer came on the PA system announcing our decent into KLIA. Right on time, quickly headed out of the aircraft and proceeded towards immigration which was also empty. Phew from gate to taxi in 10mins. Overall i was impressed by the SilkAir service, but i couldn't find a real difference between them and other low cost carriers operating the route, would be nice if you could buy or even better be provided with light snacks such as cut sandwiches. But saying that again i would definitly recommend it others.

Leg 2:
02 Feb 09
SQ119 KUL-SIN - J Class
ETD: 20:35
ETA: 21:25
B777-200

This trip had come at a good time as i had some miles which where due to expire soon, so rather then extend them online i decided to use them to upgrade to J class on the SQ operated sector. Also having sampled SQ's J class on intercontinental routes before i was keen to experience their J class product on regional routes.

Having already collected my boarding pass in Singapore i headed directly to the immigration, which surprise surprise was again empty and then straight onto to skytrain towards the satellite terminal. Although a short ride to the satellite terminal, the skytrain as some good views of aircraft parked at the gate. At this time i was only able to take a few pic

MH taking on some cargo

JAL awaiting departure

Some more aircraft after arriving on the sky train

Headed upstairs to where the SilverKris lounge is located. Normally, KrisFlyer Eliet Gold members travelling on economy cannot use this lounge and are directed to the Thai Lounge. The lounge is in an unuasl place and almost impossible to spot other then the SilverKris logo on the door. As i entered the lounge the place was empty, even the lounge dragon wasnt waiting at her door-. After a few minutes she apeared out from the back with a coffee in her hand. 'Ah Mr. Mustafa i persume' she uttered, well at least i got a personal introduction or there must not be many other J class passengers on SQ119. After this she proceeded to show me around the lounge (which is extremely small compared to other SKL) and all the anemities. A very nice touch, and one not experienced at other lounges.

A giant bird guarding the gate

Although the lounge is small, it offers some great views of tarmac and taxi ways view the large windows, with beutiful views of the sun setting over the airport. Taking up a quite corner i decieded to grab something to eat from the small pantry. Not much on offer though, other then soup, veg pasta, some spring rolls and a few wines and spirits. Opted for the pasta and some snacks

late night dinner at SKL

After getting some workdone, it was getting close to boarding time so made a move to gate C3, thanking the lovely loung assistant as i left, who during my stay came around twice asking if i wanted any more drinks. Boarding was quick and efficient, upon entering the aircraft i was personally greeted by the purser whom showed me to my seat 16A and helped me stow my luggage. I know the seats are older on the J Class regional product , but after a long day of research interviews those seats where looking damm comfy. Nice and wide with plent of leg room, additionally the cabin was almost empty, with only 7 J Class passengers in total.

After setteling down into 16A, the FA's came around introducing themselves and offerring a pre-flight drinks.

Right on time we proceeded to taxi and before you know it we where on our way back to SIN. The accent of SQ119 though was anything put pleasent, with storm clounds comming in the flight continued to climb out of the clouds with constant lightening surrounding the aircraft, but surprisingly very little turbulance during this period. Once we rose above the storm clouds everything settled into its familer routine. The highly efficient FA's came around with two choices (Chicken or Beef) foccacia for a light snack. I choose the chicken and quickly devoured it, more then adequate for a snack for such a short flight. At one point the purser came around and chatted with me for a while, he informed me that they were landing at T3 and that the i had a good seat from which i could take a picture of the A380 which we were to park next to.

As quickly as our conversation ended, SQ119 began preparing herself for the decent into SIN. At 21:15 we landed at SIN and began our taxi to T3, and as promised there was a A380 to our left.

Overall i was impressed by the regional J Class product on offer by SQ and i would definetly consider using them again on regional routes. I wonder what they would be like on long haul flights

This short trip is a precursor to a longer trip i will be taking in April, SIN to BRU with Swiss and ZUR to IST on Turkish Aielinwa in between. Not only am i looking forward to flying Swiss and Turkish but i am also looking forward to sampling a number of different lounges which i expect to experience.

Great report! Sad to see SQ phasing down this route and Silk Air taking over - while MI is a great regional/resort airline, their A320s obviously can't beat SQ's B772s. Was there any added SQ activity over the Chinese New Year period?

I still fail to understand how SQ can serve that sandwich still wrapped in plastic in J class! It takes all but a minute to unwrap it and place it on the plate! Was the sandwich heated or not? I mean, we manage to serve a hot snack that's plated on short hops to Doha or Sanaa!
