Hello fellow A.NETTERS, here is part 2 of my 6 part trip.

I planned to cash in BMI mileage and fly on the SQ A380, however SQ blocked out F & J for mileage redemption, at least to BMI, so it had to be ANA & another 767 flight.

After a hard says spotting it got dark, no longer able to read of aircraft reg numbers I decided to head over to Terminal 2, though early it would give me a chance to have a look around, I’ve not been in T2 before.

Here is an idea of the views from Terminal 3, not great but better than nothing:-
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902001.jpg
Took the skytram and a few minutes later I was in T2.

Here are some views of T2:-

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902003.jpg
Terminal 2 has a viewing area too, not used this one before, will check it out next time
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902004.jpg

The difference between this and Terminal 3 is amazing, T3 is so light, bright and airy, T2 is not, certainly looking it's age.

Tonight’s flight would be checking in using area 3 so I dropped over to check what time check-in would open – 20:30.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902005.jpg

With that in mind, I headed off to have a look around before finishing the last half hour in Starbucks checking home & work e-mails with a much needed coffee.

A few minutes before check-in time I headed over, the area was deserted so I checked in first.

Check-in was smooth, got my BP along with a lounge invitation card to the Singapore Airlines Silver Kris lounge and a map to help me find it.

Immigration was easy, a quick stamp and I was through.

Before heading to the lounge, I headed to the outdoor garden, see if I could catch a final few new planes, sadly it was not to be,it was hot and full of smokers – lounge time instead.

they greet you before you step foot in the reception area, is that to stop those not eligible before they get too far?

The lounge is nothing special at all, lacks any outside views, in fact, it’s pretty poor compared to the airlines reputation, drink & food/snack selections were poor – the only beer was on tap and that gave you half a glass of froth!

There is a bar tender but he works 15:30 to 21:00, so not much use to later passengers, thankfully I managed a beer from him before he left for the night.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902019.jpg
Being pretty hungry I tried some chicken in a sauce with black pepper, it was pretty tough, guess it had been cooking for a while!
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902012.jpg
After that I headed to the showers, really felt like a freshen & wake up, spotting had been slow and thus quite tiring, made about 36 new inc SQ's 1st A330-300, 9V-STA.

I think the showers are the best thing about the lounge!
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902023.jpg
Did a bit more work after the shower:-
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902025.jpg
As I was packing my bit’s an bob’s up, the screen showed boarding against my flight, bit early I thought but still decided to get down there, just in case!
Fish!
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902026.jpg
The terminal is very relaxing
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902027.jpg
Security was quick, no queue and I was soon in the departure gate area, not that many people by the looks of it.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902028.jpg
The gate area slowly filled up and boarding for Business Class, Star Gold etc was called at 23:59.

Our plane tonight:-
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902030.jpg
I was about the third person aboard, welcomed at the door and the direction of the seat pointed out. By the time the doors were closed, Business was about 80% full, the seat next to me was occupied too.

Business is in a 2-1-2 layout
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902041.jpg
legroom is fine providing you don’t plan to leave your seat, forget trying to get out of your window seat if the person next to you is in full recline!
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902039.jpg
Also the seats are rock hard, really not comfortable at all, at least not for me.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902040.jpg
Menu’s and order cards for breakfast were distributed, breakfast would be served prior to arrival in NRT.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902074.jpg
The safety demo was attempted on the monitors twice before the FA’s gave up and went to manual, quite amusing really.

Push occurred at 23:15, some 10 minutes early, pretty impressive, I had expected the lights to be dimmed during taxi but this was not the case.
Camera view:-
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902032.jpg
Our turn came to depart, quite a bumpy takeoff run, wheels up at 23:28 – I might add, the cabin lights we still fully on, never seen this before when taking off at night, was quite an odd feeling.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902036.jpg
Shortly after departure, a light snack was offered with drinks, I took a G&T, my snack choice being a western option, 2 tiny sandwiches and a few batons of carrots & cucumber, quite nice but wish I’d eaten more in the lounge really.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902042.jpg
I asked for another drink to knock me out and I got 2, bless her!
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH902%2005%20FEB%202009/NH902043.jpg
It was finally time for the cabin lights to be dimmed, thank goodness! – You really feel it at night, it’s just wrong.

I managed a few hours sleep before being woken up by the cabin lights going back on, it was around about 5am and the breakfast service was starting.

Not bad really, made a real change for the usual breakfast meals served, at least for me anyway.

I finished the whole lot, was pretty hungry, trays were collected and we still have an hour to go, we really did not need to get woken up this early – is this usual on ANA?

Overall ANA were fine, the legroom on these regional services is not that good, but I imagine it is on a par with the other carriers in the area. The service timings could be improved to allow more rest or perhaps it was just this crew? Crew were very helpful, English was ok, not much more to say.

Sorry there are not too many pictures, I was wary of using the camera on the plane, I understand Japanease carriers are not in favour of in flight pictures.

That aside, hope you enjoyed, please feel free to drop any comments or questions.

Regards

Mark

- Yes, really wanted another A380 ride, could have done economy but I felt lounge access and showers etc were more important, especially after a night flight teh day before.

Hi Mark, thanks for the review on NH's international service.

I think NH does well, but it seems they also miss something. I don't like the cabin light dimming soon after airborne. The same happens on JL all the time on flights ex Europe. It's airborne/dinner time/sleeping time. No time to relax a bit.
I once flew MH (NRT-BKI-KUL, B772) and think the servicelevel was slightly higher.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):

Yeah, you're a victim of the B-runway at NRT, or 34R in your case. Since NH is on T1 now, you have to taxi quite some time. The runway planning for use is done aforehand and carriers are flights are not allowed to switch to the other runway. This is all created by the noise abatement procedures around NRT.

I have the feeling that NH did not perform their best on your flight.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):

Never got any problems on JL, but once on NH upon boarding/seating only. Don't worry too much about that.

Cheers,
Eric

Hi Mark!

That was nice and quick.  Smile I did not think the next part would be up so soon. Another great addition to this TR series.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):

SQ seems to block out most mileage redemptions in F & J most of the time. They are one of the worst airlines to upgrade on, especially on the A380 and 777-300ERs.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
The lounge is nothing special at all, lacks any outside views, in fact, it's pretty poor compared to the airlines reputation, drink & food/snack selections were poor -- the only beer was on tap and that gave you half a glass of froth!

Hmmm... It seems SQ is beginning to neglect its Silver Kris lounge in Terminal 2. Maybe it is time to move all of their operations to Terminal 3?

SQ blocks (for now) any redemption on the re-config 777 and 380, as well as the 345 for all other *A partners. Members of Krisflyer, in order to redeem, needs to shell out twice the normal milage. The only way you will get a seat on the reconfig is if you book a flight operated by, e.g. 747 from LHR to SIN and it gets sub'd.

The seats have been blocked for a while now but some have had some luck over the last few weeks but its luck rather than official policy.

Thanks for all the nice pics and read.

Great second instalment. The SKL in T2 is really disappointing when compared to the T3 one.

ANA Club Asia is a pretty decent J product but it's not SQ. The seats were horribly uncomfortable when I flew them last year on the exact same flight. It was pretty hard to nod off due to the contours of the seat. 80% is not bad, it was 5 J passengers on mine.

I flew NH BKK-NRT on an overnight flight and it was same thing with cabin lights fully on. They weren't dimmed until after drink service some 30 minutes later. About 2 hours before takeoff when it was still dark outside they were abruptly turned on full blast.

- I found the whole runway thing quite a mess, JL planes tended to taxi to the runway nearest T1 and NH to the runway nearest T2, lot's of excessive taxi & thus fuel burn.

Quoting Triple7man (Reply 9):
I was on a JL CTS-HND flight and I took a picture just before pushback. The f/a told me I couldn't take pictures on the ground, after takeoff it was OK.

- Interesting to note, thanks.

Mark

Hi Mark,

Sounds like NH have a decent product for these flights, the breakfast looks very nice but the sandwiches you had earlier in the flight are a bit on the small side!

Looking forward to the next part.

Thanks for posting.

I like the forward camera view, that is always a treat to have even on shorter flights.

The breakfast brisket looks delicious. Its also interesting that the menu shows the options for 3 months.

How was the entertainment, was it AVOD or just a loop?

Again, thank you for the contribution

Hi there Mark,

So what was your overall impression of SIN?

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Terminal 2 has a viewing area too, not used this one before, will check it out next time

Geez! I had been traveling through SIN many times but I never knew of its existence.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
it was hot and full of smokers

It is indeed. But for some reasons I enjoy coming back there when I am around.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
There is a bar tender but he works 15:30 to 21:00, so not much use to later passengers, thankfully I managed a beer from him before he left for the night.

Strange. Are the guests allowed to tap the beer on their own when the bartender is off duty?

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
legroom is fine providing you don't plan to leave your seat, forget trying to get out of your window seat if the person next to you is in full recline!

I can imagine that. Is this an old interior? Or the regional business class of NH?

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Sorry there are not too many pictures,

You do not have to be. The pictures are just perfect. Thank you for sharing.  Smile

- Hi Kevin, NH were ok on this segment, though the J seating could have more legroom to be honest. Breakfast was indeed good but the sandwiche snacks were too small.

- There is a tap in the customer area, gives lot's of froth!

Quoting Akhmad (Reply 13):

- It is the standard regional business, fine for short flights, not great for anything much longer.

Did NH offer and beverages prior to take-off? On some recent JAL business class flights, I was offered nothing until after take off. Wonder if that is the norm for Japanese carriers?

NH does offer drinks and wet towels prior to take off in J.

- I must admit the legroom or limited legroom for business as unexpected, however it think most of the carriers are like this on the regional routes.

Next TR up in a day or so.

Hola Mark!

Thanks for this interesting insight into intra-asian flying.

It looks quite an experience to fly around Asia for a few days.

Looking forward to reading the following ones.

Salut!

Was on NH 901 NRT-SIN in J-class once and the IFE (at least in J) was AVOD.
Don't remember if it was touch-screen, though.

Flight was taken in first half of 2007, sorry, don't have better memory.
Equipment was 767.
