Qatar Airways: Madrid-Doha In Business Class

I had to go to Saudi Arabia on the 25th of Janury for business reasons, to Al-Khobar which is next to Bahrein. So I decided to try Qatar Airways, and their Madrid-Doha flight (almost a seven-hour flight). In Doha I would change for the connecting flight to Bahrein. My flight was in business class, and I truly found that QR is a five-star airline!

After check-in at Terminal 1 in Madrid Barajas, I went to the business lounge of this terminal, the “Cibeles” lounge. Some pictures:

So here’s the plane, A7-AEM, one of the newest A333 in Qatar’s fleet, it was delivered just one year ago.

On the picture you can see on the left the wing of a US Airways A333, bound for Philadelphia. Next to it and docked at other jetways more planes bound for North America: Delta’s B764 to Atlanta, DL’s B763 to JFK and two Continental birds to Newark, one B762 and one B752. This area for the Non-Schengen flights in Madrid’s T1 is very busy in the mornings!

I got my seat, which was 2B. The flight crew was very friendly, they took my coat, and I received an orange juice as the first drink. Business class was almost full on this flight.

Pictures of the seats:

The main meal was this:

Palate pleaser
Tapas of chicken, mushroom and potato

To commence
Spanish lobster bisque, crème fraiche

Seafood cocktail
smoked northern Spanish salmon, marinated red onion and orange salad steamed mussels

Classic Arabic mezze

To follow
Oven roasted leg of lamb, garlic jus, grilled asparagus, potato and ceps gratin

Pan seared chicken breast honey and vinegar glaze char grilled vegetables
Fried rice

Zucchini flowers filled with pine nuts and goat cheese, carrot puree
Grilled mushrooms and red peppers

Cheese plate
An individual plate of French brie, manchego and ibores cheese
Dried fruits and crackers

Sweet finale
Soft centered chocolate cake, raspberry coulis, Chantilly cream

Sliced fresh fruit

Vanilla ice cream with berry compote

Tea and coffee with fine chocolate
Coffee: Cappuccino, espresso, café latte, macchiato, American, Kenyan estate
Tea: Earl grey, English breakfast, green, roasted Japanese, Moroccan mint, non-caffeinated, herbal.

Some pictures of the different meals:

The Oryx on-demand in-flight entertainment was amazing, with a wide choice of movies, TV series, music. I watched the movie “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”

The complete amenity kit.

On arrival at Doha’s airport, which was on time, I didn’t have enough time to try the business lounge. Doha’s current terminal has no jetways, so buses are used. Business class passengers have separate buses. On the Doha-Bahrein flight, on a QR’s 332, I had the same seat, 2B. This was a short hop, the flight takes less than 45 minutes.

And finally some pictures from Saudi Arabia, riding on four-wheels motorcycles in the desert, and a beach.

Very nice report and really great pictures
How did you find the service on board?
How did you get from Bahrain to Al-Khobar,did you ride the bridge as they say?
Where those pictures in Saudi were taken?

Thanks

Nice trip report. That service looked more First than J class. I am impressed by the QR reports I've read. Looks like you had a good time too, which is always great.

Yes, that's it, I crossed the bridge, the King Fahd Causeway (well, I crossed the bridge now several times). Customs and immigration are on an island between Saudi Arabia and Bahrein. On weekends, there's a lot of traffic and it can take up to one or even two hours to cross the bridge.

The pictures in Saudi were taken in the dunes next to the Half Moon Bay in Al-Khobar (the ride on the four-wheel motorcycles) and the beach belongs to the Holiday Inn Resort in Al-Khobar.

Actually I'm still in Saudi Arabia (I just came for two weeks, but there's so much work to do that I will stay almost two months), and it's a nice country with very nice people!!

Nice report and pictures, enjoyed, thanks.

QR seemed exactly as I would expect given the recent reports.

Hopefully you will post a return report and include a few more pictures of your stay, we don't see many pictures of Saudi Arabia.

Regards

Mark

Just out of curiosity, why didn't you fly to Dammam instead of Bahrain?

Thanks for all your comments, QR is an excellent airline, the service, seat comfort....

I have some more pictures for you

Actually it’s my company (a large Spanish corporation) who always book the flights to Bahrein for the employees going to Saudi Arabia. I should tell them that there are convenient flights to Dammam with Lufthansa or KLM, and that Dammam is close to Al-Khobar. Even Syrian Arab Airlines offers flights to Dammam with a short stopover in Damascus (from Madrid, both flights on A320s).

Yes, I will write a report with my return flight. But before going back to Madrid, I will have to go to Abu Dhabi for a few days, and I will try Gulf Air’s business class (on a Bahrein-Abu Dhabi flight). I will include these flights on my next report.

Here some more pictures from Saudi Arabia.

One of the pastimes in Saudi Arabia during the weekends is to drive on the dunes (Saudis with their own SUV vehicles). But many drivers just go to the dunes to watch how other drivers climb and descend the dunes. Amazing!

A nice place to walk is the Corniche of Al-Khobar, a seafront where you can go jogging or just go for a walk. Many families are here on the weekends.

This is being constructed next to the Corniche, it appears to be a restaurant.

In Saudi Arabia, at least in this area, there are many shopping malls (but there are no cinemas), and many highways with at least 3 or 4 lanes. Also you see many gas-guzzler cars, as fuel is very cheap.

QR seems very good in providing a topclass product. The food comes with a good appearance too. Interesting to see the pics from Saudi Arabia btw,
Thanks!
