Introduction

For today’s journey I will be traveling PTY-CCS-CDG-NRT on CM and AF. However, the CM segment was nothing special so I will only cover the CCS-CDG segment for this TR and then the CDG-NRT in a separate trip report.

Having arrived from PTY on CM at about 2:30pm, I made my to the connections desk for Air France so that I could get my boarding passes. Once I got there, I was informed that the agents for AF would be arriving in about 30 mins. I did not want to wait for so long so I decided to head over to the Admirals Club of American Airlines which is the lounge that AF uses in CCS. I find this to be a bit odd considering that both AA and AF are in competing alliances.

I have been in this lounge a couple other times when flying Air France and I knew that it is nothing special, but it definitely beats out waiting at the departure gate.
When I arrived to the lounge I had to explain to the lady that I was in transit and that I was booked on AF but did not have a boarding pass. She called the AF desk at the airport and was able to confirm that I was on the flight and kindly let me in. Also, she informed me that representatives from AF would come to the lounge to hand me my boarding pass for CDG and NRT. I thought this was a nice touch on part of AF because the walk back to the transit desk was very long and all I wanted to do was just relax.

I was not very hungry and unfortunately there was very little to eat in the lounge so I just sipped on some vodka-orange juice and had a cheese ''arepa´´ which is a traditional Venezuelan food and is very delicious. At 4:30pm a boarding announcement was made and I made my way over to the gate.

There was a long line of people boarding but fortunately business class passengers were able to by pass this line. However the ''guardia nacional´´ or national guard was checking bags and people for what I assume is drug contraband so within the ramp there was a long line and waiting before being able to board. I would say that I had to wait about 30 minutes as the line moved very slowly.

Once onboard I was greeted by a friendly flight attendant and was shown to my seat. One of the things that I really like about Air France is that they have a hanger waiting at your seat to hang any coats and jackets. My jacket was immediately taken away by the flight attendant.

Load in J class was 100%. All other times I have flown this route the J and even Y cabin is always near or at 100%.

Economy class


As boarding was nearing its completion, I was offered some champagne and I was just sitting in my seat waiting for departure and ready to start my long trip to NRT.

Because of the checking by the National Guard, we pushed back close to 40 minutes late, and we lifted off close to 60 minutes late.

After holding short of the runway for about 15 minutes it got really dark. Here we are taxing again to position and hold.

Once we were airborne, the food and beverage service started. I decided to start off with some red wine and was given some kind of cheese snack. I honestly didn’t like the snack because it was too cheesy, but still better than the usual offering of warm nuts.

For appetizer I decided to go with the tomato mozzarella salad, which was pretty decent, but it was missing ''something´´ to be excellent.

Next came the main course which was rabbit. I don’t eat beef and I also don’t like fish so this was my only choice. I had to pretend that I was eating chicken because the thought of eating a cute and cuddly rabbit made me feel guilty. Anyways, the ''chicken´´ was tasteless and was not good. I ended up feeling guilty and I should have asked for the meal from economy if they had something besides beef or fish. Oh well, next time.

After the meal came desert which was some kind of cream pastry. It was not bad but I only ate half of it as I was full.

J Cabin after the meal service

By now I was pretty tired and reclined my seat and watched a movie and then dozed off to sleep.

By the time I woke up it was close to breakfast time and we were about 1:30 away from arrival into Paris.

The breakfast was pretty good and the portion was pretty generous compared to previous breakfast meals I have had on other airlines.

After breakfast I went to the bathroom to freshen up, brush my teeth again, and stretch my legs.
We soon began the descent and the flight attendants sprang into action and started to prepare the cabin for arrival into CDG.

We touched down close to 9:30am and within 5 minutes we had taxied to our gate. My next flight to NRT was scheduled for 1:15pm so I knew that I had plenty of time to transfer terminals and go to the business class lounge for a shower.

Luckily we were not taken to a remote station so I didn’t have to cram into a bus with everybody else, and within 3 minutes of deplaning I was boarding a bus to transfer to terminal 2F. Luckily I was the only person on the bus and I was able to get some nice views of the airport and other aircraft at CDG. I had spotted a CO 777 bound for EWR or IAH and it put a smile on my face as every time I see a CO jet in a foreign country I feel as if I am seeing an old friend. Unfortunately I was so busy gawking at the 777 that I didn’t have time to snap a picture of it.

Upon arriving to terminal 2F I had to clear security and then made my way past the duty free shops and reached the Air France salon where I took a shower and had some breakfast.

Conclusion

I have flown AF and KLM several times in Business Class and my opinion is that AF is the better airline. I really like the elegance and feel of the L'Espace Affaires cabin and the seat recline is pretty good and I was able to sleep very well.

Regarding service, the AF crew on this flight was very polite, professional, and friendly as they should be, but they were not extraordinary or on similar levels of Asian carriers. I really have no complaints regarding this flight and everything was very smooth and pleasant.

Considering that CO is leaving SkyTeam in October, I will try to fly AF long haul as much as possible while I can still earn miles to my OnePass account as I feel that AF is one of the top 5 airlines in Europe. I have heard and read many horror stories of AF service but thankfully I have only good things to say about my experience with this flight.

Thank you and I hope that you enjoy my next segments which will include CDG-NRT (should have it written within 1-2 days) and then NRT-CDG and CDG-CCS which will be in a few weeks.

Hello! Great trip report. I really should post mine on AF European sectors. Have you ever considered flying AZ on CCS-MXP-NRT or would it be a silly idea? Just my curiosity, why did you chose a transit through Europe and not a flight via the US? I'm glad you had a good experience on board an AF flight, especially a fully loaded J-cabin. I look forward to read your NRT trip report. Thanks for posting!

I disagree and would take KLM instead any day. AF crew is normally cold and rude, while KLM is far more relaxed, polite and efficient. KLM catering is also far better. Last but not least, KLM IFE is much superior. And then you have the hub issue, AMS is at another league if compared to the chaos of CDG.

Anyway, KL and AF now have an outdated product considering their seats do not recline fully (180 degrees). They both need to improve their hard product.

Seems they have no problem with leting you taking pictures. I like the pictures of the people on the plane as I find it interesting. I don't have the "guts" to take pictures of the cabin. I admire you for doing this.

As to rabbit. I never liked it. I had a friend in Britain who used to go catch rabbits and then he would serve it immediately as a meal. I think they call it Welsh rabbit there.

It's always nice to see an Air France report on the forum. AF is an airline that you either love them, or hate them. I happen to be that kind of person who love them. I always fly them in Y class, and they deliver a great product. When it comes to their J offerings they aren't very good, and IMO KL are a bit better. The food doesn't seem too nice, and from what I've heard, one should never order the fish, as it's said to be very bad  Wink

The J cabin looked great, i have always found AF's cabins very nice, love the carpets  Smile

The food you were served looked rather decent, the starter looked very nice. The main course rabbit didn't look nice at all, it looked very much like a stew, a friend of me in Norway cooked up, with a rabbit he shot earlier in the day. Not good at all, though it tasted very much like chicken.

The dessert looked rather decent as well, AF are famous of their sorbet ice cream which is said to be very good. Though it's kind of boring that they seem to offer the exact same items on the menu.

The breakfast looked superb, by far much better than the 2nd meals served on KLM.

I'm looking forward to your next part. Thanks for sharing.

I did not even consider Alitalia as I feel that their product is terrible. I did not go through the US mainly because I have always wanted to fly Air France into Japan and secondly, going via Europe gives me more frequent flyer miles  Smile

That is a valid opinion, but I respectfully disagree.

Haha thank you. I really dont care if people see me because I am used to it. In the beginning it is a bit embarrasing but I get used to it.

Thank you. I actually feel that AF has better food offerings, although I dont like their bread as it is too hard and cold.

Who on earth will ever put rabbit on an inflight menu!? That's really strange. And I don't like the looks of the meal, it doesn't make a good appearrance at all.

That second C class cabin would be my choice. Is this only 1 row of seats? If so, that is indeed very private.

Looking forward to your onward flightreport to NRT. Did you fly the B77W or A332?

Yes miles also played a part.

Yes, KLMs IFE is much better. I also agree that rabbit was very odd but apparently it was cooked in a typical Venezuelan style.

Yes, the second C cabin had only 1 row and I should have taken it. It was very private and nice.

CDG-NRT was on a 772, but my return will be 77W and 747.

It's funny. I find people almost have kharma with airlines. For example, BA and I just don't get along. At least on their trans-atlantic service. Whether in J or Y I just never have a good flight. From bugs in drinks to rude F/As to terrible food and service. Yet on AF and LH, especially in Y, I have great experiences. I'm OK with KLM but find, aside from their 777, their aircraft a bit tired. As far as IB goes, well, what can I say? I love T4 at Barajas but hate having to ride on IB to get there for the most part.

I wonder if I'm the only one that believes in kharma when it comes to flying and somehow one's chemistry suits one airline over another. I'm sure I'll be judged as crazy but it just seems that way to me. I'll list my kharmatic (word?) 1-10 with 10 being good kharma.

AF - 9
LH - 9
KL - 8
IB - 5
AZ - 5
EI - 5
BA - 2

I'm flying US in a few weeks transatlantic to MAN from PHL and returning from AMS so I'll measure them next. LOL

So there it is. It's odd. I moved to CO from AA after being with DL for years as FFQnt flyer. I'm glad CO iswitching to *A.

Well to be honest with you, I strongly dislike flying through CCS primarily because of the checking that the guardia nacional does. Also, in the past my checked bag always seems to miss the connection between AF and CM (when flying back to PTY) and when it arrives in PTY, something is always stolen. This is why I try to avoid checkin in bags when flying through CCS, and if I must check in a bag then I plastic wrap it.

Besides that CCS is pretty nice and I love the cheese arepas.

The A343 was pretty nice, but on the way back I get the 744. The seat was pretty comfy, alot more than KLM lie flat seat. The 777 on the CDG-NRT was more comfy.

I havent flown LH long haul in almost 10 years but once CO moves to Star Alliance I will switch to LH away from AF.

I have flown AF on long-haul routes (Economy) several times in the past few years and the quality of food has always been improved. On my latest flight this week I was really impressed by the generous, tasty meal.

I'm not sure whether you only refer to Business Class, but I can't agree as far as Economy Class is concerned. While KLM's crews probably belong to the best ones out there, AF's crews haven't been so bad on my trips in the recent years. Actually many of them were very kind. And the food on KLM long-haul routes is quite average in comparison to the well-presented and generous meals on AF. And I was just able to compare the latest IFE versions on both carriers - I can't see such a big advantage for KLM.

in the winter schedule they send the A343 3 or 4 times weekly (it is scheduled), and I have to say that the layout in Business is nicer as they are only 2-2-2 and not 2-3-2 like a big part of the 747 business section.

couldnt agree more, Ccs is now over 3 years my homeaiport and I hate to use it ... specially on flights to europe - intra-southamerican flights are normally not controlled by the national guards so the boarding is a breeze.

In 2 months I will be bound on LH to FRA (yes with the 346) I am sure the boarding will be a mess.

yes, most european airlines are very good booked ex CCS, LH will upgrade to 3 or 4 weekly A346 flights (including FirstClass! first airline back with F-Product to Ccs) and the other flights will be still with A343.
