The titles have been updated since this picture.

Thankfully today’s flight was a little later than yesterdays, not much bit it all helps with sleep!

I checked out around 6am and headed to the day locker storage I found the night before, 500 YEN for 1 days storage of my Samsonite, much better than carting it around all day!

I booked this flight on the ANA website, unlike JAL ANA allow the world to book tickets with them, something which should be a standard feature for all major airlines around the world, people like to travel you know!

My e-mail confirmation has a SKIP thing on it, it allows you to proceed to security without a boarding pass, you scan the barcode at security to confirm you should be travelling, a slip of paper prints out to advise you of your seat and gate numbers – see below.

Again, no queues at security, the Japanease are so efficient!

This is the print out from security

Boarding started from gate 61 at 06:40 on the dot – as usual the pre-board announcement or speech was read from a little blue book, nothing is left to chance, it is totally scripted!

Once your reach the gate attendants, the bar code is scanned and a slip of paper prints out, this is your boarding pass, I noted you can also use your mobile phone with the bar code, very impressive, as much as I like normal boarding passes, I like this idea, very easy and cuts down on queues.

I lost the morning BP, this is the return flights

I had hoped the seat between us would remain free, however a man appeared and took the seat, he had a huge coat on which invaded my seat area, the coat remained on for the entire flight, not sure how, he must have been boiling!

Push occurred a couple of minutes early and we headed out to runway 34R

After an enjoyable day on the deck I headed through security, again no queue at all – I saw the device which checks liquids to allow them through security, or not, very impressive, why is this not used elsewhere in the world?

I booked this particular flight back as it was the -300 model, a type missing from my log.

I headed to the bar for a beer and to read my book
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20DOMESTIC%202009/NH064.jpg
upon my return it had filled up but still looked like a light load for the 777-300 flight.

Boarding started at 16:40 from gate 9, the usual speech then pre boards were done before joe public were allowed to board.

When I booked this flight I knew Markus would not be aboard, for that reason I chose his usual seat, the last one on the plane, in this case, 57 as 58 were middle seats with no window views.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20DOMESTIC%202009/NH067.jpg
The last few rows are sets of 2 by the window as the fuselage narrow’s, I had a seat mate but plenty of leg room as there is a big gap between the seat and side wall.

Push took place 4 minutes early
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20DOMESTIC%202009/NH072.jpg
we headed for a 32L departure, wheels up at 17:07.

http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20DOMESTIC%202009/NH081.jpg

Service was the same as the mornings flight, efficient as always.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20DOMESTIC%202009/NH084.jpg
I managed to get a little sleep though I must say these -300’s really seem to feel the slightest turbulence down the back, it got quite rough at times, must be the length of the beast I suppose.

Wheels touched down on runway 34R at 17:59, another short taxi to the gate and we were off.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z287/BA319131/NH%20DOMESTIC%202009/NH085.jpg
Despite the passenger load, and sitting in pretty much the last row, it did not take long to get off the plane.

Overall both flights were excellent, nothing to get excited about, well the -300 was for me as it was my 1st -300 flight and a non ER, ie not a 77W.

If I compared ANA domestic with JAL domestic, I would say ANA are ahead of the game, the ability for overseas travellers to book via their website is excellent, JAL really should step up to the plate and allow that too. In addition, the whole SKIP thing is brilliant, JAL may have something similar but I did not see it, regardless, next time I travel on a domestic flight in Japan, ANA will get my business.

Regards

Mark

What I always found exciting was the powerful take-off on these light 767s and 777s...much better than on fuel-heavy long-haulers.

Nice report Mark!

Your flights were rather average, and the seats on the 772 looked very nice, i wonder why they can't have them in Europe as well?

Another very enjoyable report with great photos. The priority seating around the airport is not something I've seen before, quite a good idea for keeping things organised during boarding. Nice to hear you had good flights with ANA.

The Tokyo Bay Aqua line is a combination bridge-tunnel running from Kisarazu in Chiba Prefecture to Kawasaki in Kanagawa Prefecture. There is an artificial island, Umi Hotaru (Sea Firefly) consisting of a rest area with restaurants, shops and amusement facilities. The structure you asked about is Kaze no to, which supplies air to the tunnel. It gets its power from the bay's winds.

Hi Mark

thanks for this insight on NH again. It reminds me completely on my own travel from 2 months ago, on their B763. I agree fully with you, flying in Japan is without any hassle and stress. Everything work usually smoothly and on the schedules. But believe me, IF something happens, the Japanese are not controlfreaks and it will become a mess rather soon or it takes a long time to get things solved  Wink

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
JAL may have something similar but I did not see it, regardless, next time I travel on a domestic flight in Japan, ANA will get my business.

JAL doesn't have such a thing yet. JL is a bit old fashioned, as you notice on the website, as well the terminal at HND and NRT (JL uses always the older terminal buildings) and modern technologies are not introduced yet to the public.
In case I'm a paying customer, at this moment, NH would also get my business (and JL knows that already  Silly)

PS - I really will go to fly on one of these tiny Dash 8's in Japan next time I'm there!! And the Saab 340 as well. Still missing in the log!

Regards,
Eric

great Asia trip! I read all four parts, you did a great job and provide us a bunch of great pictures.
Can you confirm that this is the first time we ever saw you on a picture? Big grin I never came across one with you pictured on it!

Japan airports look like great places to watch airplanes! European and US airports should follow this!

Looking forward to the return parts.

thanks for this insight on NH again. It reminds me completely on my own travel from 2 months ago, on their B763. I agree fully with you, flying in Japan is without any hassle and stress. Everything work usually smoothly and on the schedules. But believe me, IF something happens, the Japanese are not controlfreaks and it will become a mess rather soon or it takes a long time to get things solved

- I'd love to see it when things go wrong then!  Smile

Quoting Airbuseric (Reply 8):
In case I'm a paying customer, at this moment, NH would also get my business (and JL knows that already )

- Don't tell your boss!

Quoting Airbuseric (Reply 8):
I really will go to fly on one of these tiny Dash 8's in Japan next time I'm there!! And the Saab 340 as well. Still missing in the log!

- What both types? - You know where to go then, ITM  Smile

Mark

Hey Mark,
great Asia trip! I read all four parts, you did a great job and provide us a bunch of great pictures.

- Thanks Ori  Smile

Quoting Stylo777 (Reply 9):
Can you confirm that this is the first time we ever saw you on a picture? I never came across one with you pictured on it!

- I think I've been in 2 previous reports, one was the EK A380 inagural and the other was an IB report some 2-3 years ago.

Quoting Stylo777 (Reply 9):
Japan airports look like great places to watch airplanes! European and US airports should follow this!

- They are great, the good thing is the Japanease like to take pictures and look at stuff, so observations decks are pretty much a given. Germany is good as they provide decent decks but the rest of the world really should follow suit, how are we going to keep this hobby alive if people cannot access their hobby easiy?

Mark

Hi Mark,

Another interesting TR! It seems like NH will be getting my service too. Don't JL also fly widebodies on the Tokyo-Osaka routes?

The cupholders are ones that I've never seen before.. Just holes!

No wonder why they built Kansai - Itami looks like it's been swamped by houses!

I'm really amazed at the variety of planes flying in and out of ITM. And the fact that they come so close to the observation deck (seems like it anyway).

What's your perspective of NRT vs HND and KIX vs ITM?

Quoting Triple7man (Reply 7):
The structure you asked about is Kaze no to, which supplies air to the tunnel. It gets its power from the bay's winds.

That was very interesting! Cheers!

Now for the flight out of Japan! Looking forward to it.

Nicholas

ANA allow the world to book tickets with them, something which should be a standard feature for all major airlines around the world, people like to travel you know!

Agreed. When I was arranging our Indonesian domestic flights, I had to contact the call center of Garuda to book the ticket. Mandala, on the contrary, allowed me to book through their website straight away.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
My e-mail confirmation has a SKIP thing on it, it allows you to proceed to security without a boarding pass, you scan the barcode at security to confirm you should be travelling, a slip of paper prints out to advise you of your seat and gate numbers -- see below.

Quoting BA319-131 (Thread starter):
Once your reach the gate attendants, the bar code is scanned and a slip of paper prints out, this is your boarding pass, I noted you can also use your mobile phone with the bar code, very impressive, as much as I like normal boarding passes, I like this idea, very easy and cuts down on queues.

Hey, it is Japan anyway!  Smile

Hola Mark!

Thanks for this coming part. I am already looking forward to the next ones... I am getting used to have one every other day. I will miss them when you are over with this trip; it is time you start thinking of a new one to keep your many fans entertained.

Osaka Airport looks nice... although flights seem monopolized by ANA and JAL .

Very nice report! Extra special thanks for the spotting pictures from ITM. Brings back nice memories; I was there in Sep97.

Amazing that they start boarding 20mins before departure!!! And they still manage to get it out 2 mins early!!!! We have start 40 mins to board a domestic widebody and probably need about 30mins of that. For sure, we can't do it in 20mins. But having mostly Japanese travelling makes things easier. Having worked flights to NRT a few times, boarding is very quick.

Mark, thanks a lot for that insight on HD intra-Japan service. The routes all seem very Japanese and very efficient  Smile. One question - any idea on the need for the second paper. I was confused. If the first slip allowed you to go through and had your seat number, what was the second slip for. Or, did you change your seat assignment?

Re the paper bits, the e-mail coinfirmation has a SKIP barcode, you scan this at security and it proves you can travel, as a result of the scan, a slip prints out reminding you or your name, seat & gate number. When boarding starts you scan your SKIP barcode and it prints out a slip of paper which is your boarding pass - hope that is a bit clearer.
