Hello !

Trip report of a january travel, one of my favorite route, Paris to Montreal !

After flying with LH & AC via FRA, LX via ZRH and LH via MUC, this time I choose an Air Canada flight via Toronto. I wanted to try flying with an B767 and an B777 ! A first time on board this aircrafts, and my first travel with my new Senator card !

After a short bus ride with Roissybus from the Paris Opera, I arrive directly in the terminal 2A. Terminals 2A and 2C have the old CDG conception and used for long distance flights. If the terminal 2C have been completed renovated, terminal 2A look very old ! Perhaps beacause AF don't use anymore this terminal ! It was also the first time I used this terminal.

At this season, the trafic is very, very quiet ! Fast check in at the dedicated *A Gold counter, and not at the Business class counter. After a long waiting time at the police control, only one police officer for all the departure of the terminal with boardings AA CO TN AC and some others, I proceed to the safety control and discover the boarding area. How to say... It's more a narrow corridor than waiting area ! I can't imagine the situation at the peak season !

Thanks my Senator Card, corresponding to the *A Gold statut, I proceed to the Maple Leaf lounge, located in the recent satellite of the terminal.

It's breakfast time !

It's now boarding time, with priority acces. My first time a board a 767 !!! I find the configuration 2+3+2 pleasant... the load factor was very low... I didn't count, but probably arround 33% !! very low for a such flight !

After arrival in the nice terminal 1, I proceed to the police and custum control. I know that my english is not perfect... but it was very hard to understand the officer !! And no service in french propose on this bilingual country !! Surprising !! I proced then to the Mapple leaf lounge of the domestic terminal, before flying to Montreal. Very nice and big, a lot of people ! The restauration was very good, with a salad bar and very tasty cookies !!

http://i64.servimg.com/u/f64/11/94/06/77/100_4430.jpg

I'm still surprising at USA/Canadian Airport ! Commuters like this Dash 8-100 at the gate and no bus boarding !! It's extremely rare in european airports to see such aircrafts at this positions !

Very nice E-jet to Halifax ! I must try this one !!

http://i64.servimg.com/u/f64/11/94/06/77/100_4442.jpg

The flight to Montreal was very quiet, but with one hour delayed. Something surprising : at the "priority boarding call" for passengers in business class, Aeroplan Elite/Elite+ and Star Alliance Gold, arroung 1/3 of the passengers proceed to the gate !! The B777-300 was fast totaly booked, even if on this line there are a flight every 30/60 minutes all the day !

After one week in Montreal with a lot of snow, time is now come for the return flight to Paris. Normaly my flight was operated with a B777-300, coming from Paris, but the aircraft was change. A A330-300 was operating today, probably the aircraft coming from LHR or FRA. It was the A330 with the Star Alliance colors, the only with the new AC interiors.

Take off !

Extra service on this line !! A happy mix is also offred with the drink ! Normaly on domestic/Transborder AC flight, only the drink is offred, you must buy everthing else, even on a 6 hours flights like YUL LAX or YVR HNL !! Crazy and choking, specially for a major airlines ! I can't imagine that in europe!

Our B767-300 is ready at the gate. Like for the inbound flight, the load factor was very low. I can understand that it's low season, but it's a litlle worrying for the Airline. The economic crisis must be very hard !!

Landing RWY 27R, parking at the satellite near terminal 2A.

It was a very nice experience. The IFE system of Air Canada is really great with a big choice of films. It was my first flight on board B767 and B777. There are good aircrafts, the seat configuration 3-3-3 at the B777 is not the best. I think that I will continue to choose flying on board A330/A340 !

Thank you for reading this trip report.

Nice report!

The meals on AC looked rather OK, but they are not as good as on Air France. The lounge food on the other hand looked great, i didn't know that they had proper food in the lounges in USA/Canada.
As the look of it, it seems like the A330 had also got the extreme makeover.

If the 3-3-3 isn't the best, which configuration is? The 3-4-3, which is even worse, the 3-4-2, or the horrible 2-5-2?

Well the 2-3-2 config n the 767 (sometimes 2-4-2 on high density aircraft) and the 2-4-2 seating on all A300/A310/A330/A340 aircraft are all more comfortable than the 3-3-3 (and sometimes even 3-4-3) seating on the 777, IMO.

On your outbound flight, did you enjoy that snack from Monty's Bakehouse?

I flew Swiss ZRH-JFK last week and they served a snack of Monty's grilled vegetable wrap...was really, really, really good.

Read up and seems they focus on the airline industry and Air Canada is a huge customer of them.

It's also what I mean. I prefered to choose a flight with a 2-4-2 configuration. I like flying with A330/A340 ! But on this way, it was also funny to have a short flight YYZ YUL and YUL YYZ with a wide body !!

I never fly AF to YUL, but I flown a long haul AF flight a few year ago. The tempo class of AF is good quality. For LH I was really dispointed : the meal are very poor and the IFE (it was 333 and 346) not very developped. For LX it was better... but I became an C-upgrade on ZRH YUL!! I can post the trip report of the LH and LX flights soon. For my next flight, I will probably choose LX, exept if LH has a better price or if I can spend my FB miles on AF or KL !

I'm wondering why 2-5-2 is rated so negative - it's almost similar to Airbus' 2-4-2. And how often are flights 100% full? Even if, people can either reserve seats in advance or simply try to be at check-in on time.

Sounds like a typical "Rapidair" flight (Rapidair is what they call the Toronto-Montreal and Toronto-Ottawa flights). Very large proportion of business travellers, and higher tiered frequent flyer members.

Hi, thanks for this interesting insight in AC.

Quoting LXfan (Thread starter):
It's extremely rare in european airports to see such aircrafts at this positions !

Regarding e.g. AMS, most commuters are parked on remote positions indeed, but few airlines still demand a gate, e.g. LH, OS, VG (F50). Although VG is now operated by Cityjet BAe146's. Remote positions usually also mean lower handling charges at airports.

About your flight. I found the meals not too good on AC, but loungefood was good.
Low loads, quite normal with many carriers at this moment. I know some widebody flights which operate longhaul with about 10% loadfactors. Definitely moneylosers... Hopefully the economic climate will change to the brighter side soon again!
btw, pictures are great and so many! Well done!

Regards,
Eric

And no service in french propose on this bilingual country !!

Probably because you chose a unilingual agent/line. They HAVE to provide service in French at EVERY major Canadian airport. C'est toujours indiqué «agent bilingue». Even though there might only be one or two amongst the 11-12 present. Pas toujours évident, surtout si c'est ta première fois au Canada (not always obvious, especially for first timers in Canada). I suggest trying it next time.

Nice TR! Well done, shocking to see all of the maps worked. You lucked out on that bud!

Maybe it was just the photo but those 767s appeared to have light blue lighting... as in MOOD lighting? Now i realise a bad photo may have picked up a standard 'daylight' florescent tube and distorted the colour to appear like 'mood lighting blue' so let me ask the obvious question.

Did AC install mood lighting as part of its XM project on the 767?

The departure flight was planed at 5.00 PM !! It's also a peak time for business travlers ! I checked a the loading factor the day before my journey, it was really not full ! Probably many "last minute" travlers. The fare politic of AC includes many pass fare, like on the metro, or fare with unlimited journeys !

So low loadfactors ??? crazy yes... The fare are also very low actually, some majors propose transatlantic flights for 350 EUR (return tickets incl.taxes), 1300 EUR on C-class ! I also see at CDG airport, many flights are cancelled ! ADP (Aeroport de Paris) plane to close some terminals if the crisis continue !

The bilingual counter was close ! I've see a few month ago a documentary of Radio Canada about the bilingual service on public service (custom, post, police). Well, in USA, in Calgary I had no problem... but in Toronto for the second time I had difficultys to understand their english !!

Depends on what you mean by "police". Of course, you can't expect to have a Vancouver Police agent speaking French to you! There's barely any French speakers out in major cities outside Québec and the cities of Montreal, Quebec, Ottawa and Moncton. But as for the counter, every time I've been through Toronto, there's always been more than one bilingual custom agent. I'm very surprised that there wasn't any, especially since the flight was coming from CDG. That, even for Toronto, is unusual, I can assure you. Of course, all custom officers in YUL speak French, and most do in YOW.

I actually quite like the 2-5-2. If you're traveling alone or as a couple then the 2 on the side is good, or if you're traveling in a group of 3+ people then the middle section is perfect.

Yes, there are also Air Transat and Corsairfly in summer. Directs flight are not specially the cheapest. For this travel, the AC flight via YYZ cost only 50 EUR more for 2 flights and 1250 miles ! But next time, I will take a flight with connection in europe. At the return flight, I can take a shower at the lounge after the night flight !

AF has 13 B744 actually. Only 3 have PTV ! On the 10 other, you have ptv only on the upperdeck, rows 60-69. More for Skyteam elite/elite+ members, but other passenger can also have access at this places at the check in !

Quoting LXfan (Thread starter):
After come the meal. Not very copious, but taste good !

The meal you were served looks like a science experiment that once had three lives. I am hoping it was more appetizing than what it looks like.

Snack before arriving

I'll take the pizza and chips that Delta offered me once coming back from CDG. Although, lamb is a fine choice for the meat.

And no service in french propose on this bilingual country !!

Sometimes it's better to speak in English in Montréal....  Wink

Quoting LXfan (Thread starter):
Our B777 is arriving at the gate, just a few minute before boarding time !

What a beauty !!!

Quoting LXfan (Thread starter):
but the aircraft was change. A A330-300 was operating today

NO!! What a horrible thing to do! I hope I never get cheated like that.

Quoting LXfan (Thread starter):
Ready to land at CDG, with a very bad weather !

As always....
